    yesss ep 3!! I'll say it again, THANK YOU! Thanks for your quality content, honestly this was so helpful! My husband loves his 935 for ironman training, i HAD a vivioactive HR for about 13 months before it was full F.U.B.A.R!!! Setting up my Vivioactive 3 today, and this whole series (including the compare and contrast!) has been so helpful! We almost got the fenix 5 (but prob too bulky for me) now even MORE excited for the Vivioactive 3 (after being burned by a disappointing last few months from the "vivioactive HR"). THANK YOU!

    guys, VivoActive 3 Music can actually track pull ups and push ups, with reps count and auto pause. I am super impressed!

    Sorry to keep pestering you, but you've just been so helpful and responsive, and i promise this is the last question. Is it possible to use other apps whilst recording an activity? for example if i'm doing a run but i want to use a normal stopwatch app whilst still recording gps data and everything else but off screen. This would be enough until they implement a manual lap feature is what im thinking. anyway really informative video and responses, its appreciated :)

  • @HerrRatzle
    @HerrRatzle 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks so much for these videos, you clearly spend a lot of time making them high quality. Three things I'd like to see are: 1. the quirks you have with the watch, 2. third party apps, 3. data exportation for personal use (summary csv option, taking .FIT files directly off of the device, using Garmin's API)

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    One question though; what would you advise when doing tennis? I use the Cardio activity.

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, the cardio profile should work for any non GPS related activity. Then you can always change the workout type in Garmin Connect after the fact. Thanks!

  • @darinv_music

    Hi DesFit. I've been watching your reviews on the Vivoactive 3, just got mine in the mail. So far love it... although I would like to do a general Strength workout without having to do all the set counting and touch the watch each step of the way. Wht do you recommend? The workouts I do are a mixture of cardio + weights + body weight circiuts. Lastly, how much does workout mode matter? Is it measuring my calories burned based off heart rate? Thanks in advance.

      I tried the golf app yesterday. Not great. Shot detection doesn’t work. You can’t change your handicap or distances as this doesn’t work. You can keep score but then it isn’t synced to ConnectIQ. Have reported to Garmin.

    Hi .. I've just bought the Garmin VivoActive3 after having 2 Fitbit devise (Blaze and Versa) .. I've not found it as user friendly yet and some of the training systems seem quite in depth so I've not delved in to those - one thing i have noticed is the variance in calories between the 2 .. in Fitbit a Cardio (Body Combat class) with Fitbit was 500+ calories for an hours work but the Garmin was only 350 calories which I thought was a big difference - I also find the Garmin isn't as sensitive as the Fitbit in terms of steps etc. which i guess is a good thing as more accurate (i.e. fitbit picks up arm movements much more easily as a step movement). have you found Cardio to be quite out... I notice that Fitbit wasn't one you measured it with ...

    great review..Is there a dedicated hiking activity mode on Vivoactive 3 like on Fenix series?
    I am looking for a watch mainly to see lot of metrics while hiking. Don’t really care about the navigation aspect.
    Would the Vivoactive 3 give me as much metrics as the Fenix series? For example, on the Fenix, I can select a data screen that shows altitude variations over the last 4 hours. Is there such screen available?
    As for notifications, on Fenix series, you have to click on the start button and then the down button to scroll any notification which is a pain. Can you scroll a notification just by swiping down as soon as you receive it on the Vivoactive?
    Thank you....

    For floor climbing I was told the watch needs to see a 10ft 6" change before it counts it as a floor change, both Garmin and Samsung(Gear S3) support mentioned this to me. As for steps I was told that you need to move at least 9-10 steps consecutively before it starts counting. Can you also test out some of the third-party hiking apps please? I don't remember, but is there an interval option?

      This is a very full-featured activity tracker and unless you need a really durable case or advanced features like connectivity to the higher-end heart rate straps that can collect running dynamics, I'd highly recommend it.

  • @cosminscarlat6449
    @cosminscarlat6449 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My rowing heart rate and treadmill heart rates were way off. It seems that for any activity which arms are moving around quickly, the HR is completely off (much lower than it should be). Also, while I was rowing (indoor), it was counting steps. 767 strokes and 2800 steps. I did 5000m in just under 25 minutes and it told me my HR was averaging 85! As soon as I got off the rowing machine, HR jumped to 140. Any suggestions? I had the same experience with the treadmill. While I'm on it, the HR is completely off however as soon as I get off, HR goes up like crazy (where it should be). Have you tried wearing this thing on your ankle? Perhaps it would be more accurate there, tucked in the sock for good contact and little movement.

    When you talk about the annoyance of wearing a watch during activities with wrist flexion (around 6:30 in the video), do you think it's any different between round devices like this, and straight-edge devices like the Fitbit Ionic, Vivoactive 1 and HR, Apple Watch, Samsung Gear Fit lineup, etc.?

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Catherine Powers That’s a very good point Catherine, and yes, I believe it does make a difference for wearability. I do believe square or rectangular watches would be better, however, there will be ones that are better (Apple Watch - nice round edges) and some that would be worse (Fitbit Ionic - sharp edges).

  • @laydsimba
    @laydsimba 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m glad you tested the floors climbed feature, and the fact that you weren’t getting accurate numbers despite climbing a ton of stairs makes me feel less crazy. I have been so frustrated with this problem on my VAHR, and have contacted Garmin about it so many times. When I had a Fitbit Charge HR, it was always accurate. Do you have any idea why this feature doesn’t work on the Garmin devices?

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +laydsimba Honestly I’m not sure if the reason. The Apple Watch altimeter seems slightly better but it still has some issues as well.

    • @theoneed2051
      @theoneed2051 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The video shows you skipping steps, could that be messing with the accuracy?

    • @DesFit

      It’s based on the altimeter, not the number of steps.

    Hi there, just got a vivoactive 3 this weekend as an upgrade from my Forerunner 230. On my Forerunner, I could easily push the down arrow to show the watch face while still in running mode. The vivoactive seems to automatically show my time/pace/distance every 30sec or so no matter how often I swipe back to the watch face. Do you know if there is a way to have it in running mode, but keep the watch face visible at all times? I prefer to not see my stats while running.

    Thanks Des I'm about to purchase this watch. Leaving fitbit. I already have the Edge 510 will these devices interfere with each other?

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Big Dee you can use both devices at once but I wouldn’t recommend syncing them to the same Garmin Account, especially if you use Strava. There is some weirdness with one ride sometimes overwriting another and messing up PRs. But I use my fenix and Edge 1030 or 520 together at the same time.

    • @Robert-tv3pl
      @Robert-tv3pl 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Last year I got an edge unit and love it!! I also had the vivoactive classic (used to be a fitbit fan but switched to Garmin) I wore the VA when I would bike but didn't track the ride on both devices.
      I now have the VA3 but haven't done rides with it.
      Works really well overall btw. And it seems that any steps that were counted during the ride and removed from the count. That way it isn't the false readings. That is just my experience tho.

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert D I mainly use the Edge for better usability and not necessarily the data. As you may have seen in the fenix 6 predictions video I did a while back, I would just love it if Garmin would come out with an “Edge display unit” that was just a receiver for information from a watch, not gps on it, just a unit to display the information already collected on the watch.

    @johnmanley4528 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice job Des! I've been a bit frustrated with the strength workouts. If you create one, you can't make corrections the day of the workout, and there is no rest mode. If you use the stock profile you have to manually input things like the weight. If you bench press 135, you have to hit the plus sign 135 times and that info resets the next set. Perhaps these are software fixes? Also, I didn't have high hopes for notifications and they are nothing to write home about. I'm curious about your battery life. My watch looks like 3-4 days of battery life.

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Manley battery life has been disappointing no doubt. The overall usability of a smartwatch for strength training seems like it’s a bit awkward still so hopefully a better solution can be found. Otherwise, how are you liking it?

    • @johnmanley4528
      @johnmanley4528 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      DesFit I really like the look and feel of it. I find myself not wanting to wear it all day because of the poor notifications, however. The battery life is not up to the VAHR. Also, does it take a while to connect to ANT for toy? It connects to the Scosche, but is slats than the VAHR on connecting.

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Manley Do you have it at 20% brightness or lower? Hooks up with my Ant+ sensors just fine for me.

    Can we design a run workout like 300m fast run, 1 minute rest, 500m slow run etc and download that to the watch? I know we can download other custom workouts but running was not mentioned in the IFA.

      Yes. That's what I've been doing to get around the lack of manual lap. It's clunky, but as long as you can plan your workout out ahead of time, it works.

    do you still recommend this watch for 2021? or should i get venu sq?

    • @DesFit

      The price on this currently is really tempting but the Venu SQ is much more current and a bit easier to use with two buttons rather than just the one.

    at 3:15 the heart rates are pretty far off actually. Which is which by the way? Left is a strap and right is the VA3? Also could you make some comparison of heart rate graphs compared to a chest strap? It was not clear here.

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +poornapragna l s There were just some spikes with the 5X which was on the left but for wrist based HR, 7 bpm difference isn’t terrible for almost 2 hours. Definitely realized I should have labeled them after the fact. Sorry about that! And ya, wanted to show the strap data but only have 2 phones :) Overall, the VA3 was actually more in line with the chest strap than the 5X. It performed well.

  • @YON3484
    @YON3484 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Then Des... for anaerobic exercises (Gym or Crossfit) better 935xt or 5 than VA3?...
    When have new Garmin watches in the market Fenix 6 or others?...

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +YON3484 any of those would do, but if you’re doing some serious CrossFit, I would probably suggest a 935 or 5-series mainly for durability. Not sure about when a fenix 6 would be released, but most likely next year.
