I don't get it. You bought a system 76 to run windows. I just don't get why you would make that choice considering all the options out there.

      Yes, my exact sentiments!

It's possible to flash the original proprietary firmware on the device with the `system76-firmware` tool to get Windows support. The open source firmware is developed primarily for Linux, whereas Windows support is on a best effort basis. The open firmware exists precisely to get the best Linux desktop compatibility and performance, which the proprietary firmware cannot provide.

Good to know, but at that point I feel like I would've defeated the purpose of System76 for me personally, which was to get the open source firmware. If I'm going to use proprietary firmware anyways, I know for a fact I can get a significantly smoother experience from other devices.

@1:07 the video started out with a lot of crackling and stayed this way for quite a while (@4:13, @7:28 crackling still there). After @13:00 there's no more crackling. Did you notice this? Not sure I side with you regarding the return and how it was handled, no offense, but I enjoyed the vid none the less.

I didn't notice it in the initial recording, and I had already rerecorded the video several times for other reasons. My setup these days is considerably more stable and better quality, sorry for the problems back then.

@@TheNewOil hey, thanks for the reply. Didn't realize the video was a year old, heh. I came for the System76 review and subbed for the other great content you have. Just thought you'd be interested in knowing about the weird audio issue, but you've already sorted that out.

I appreciate the heads-up. Sadly these things happen, even to the most seasoned pros. All I can do is keep moving forward. Glad you like the other content and thanks for sticking around!

Just as a quick note, I got bit by the Windows 11 secureboot issue as well. I actually managed to return the system before it even got to my house once I figured out that I couldn't run Windows 11 without going through a VM on their firmware at the time. I was really disappointed because I wanted to dual boot on a system where I would not have linux compatibility issues. I just didn't think it would be an issue in 2022, and I like you, did not do my due diligence. However, their new 13th gen intel systems with coreboot DO now have secure boot support, which means that should not be a blocked anymore. But, as if often said here, if secure boot doesn't work for any reason System 76 won't be much help. You buy from them to run Linux, not Windows, so this is understandable. That said, I'm enough of a nerd that I will consider them in the future if they keep the new secure boot feature in the firmware going forward.

I got System76 laptop and have endeavour os on it; but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you in the United States because of import taxes. My only annoyance is the fan noise otherwise it’s a good laptop. Personally, I would get a framework 16 laptop now.

Framework is pretty good for Linux in general while also officially supporting Windows

I remember looking into Framework during this debacle. If I remember correctly, none of their models have dedicated GPUs, which means I couldn't use them for video editing.

Glad you're back! I was actually glad that you did this review. I am preparing to buy a new laptop in the upcoming year, and I was looking for something pretty beefy. Initially, I wanted to go with Framework, because I like the idea of upgradeability. However, I shifted and then considered going the System76 route. I'd heard so many great things about them. I think my use case falls within their window -- I'll be using Fedora and I will not be using Windows at all. I was slightly worried about buying a System76 device, since I know they are behind PopOS, and I was worried about compatibility with other Linux distributions. I'm still not 100% sure which way that I am going to go, since I am not planning to make a decision until June or July -- unless I am forced to upgrade sooner, but this review was helpful nonetheless.

If you're using Fedora, you should be just fine. Good luck either way!

Thanks for the honesty. I was considering a System 76 laptop strongly, had it in my cart and was considering how to pay for it. I'm not buying one now after hearing your story. I'll just grab some refurb Dell or HP and wipe it and make it better with Linux.

I have a couple of System76 computers and have run multiple distros of Linux without issue for years. Seems the user is the issue.

Great video, although I'm sorry you had to deal with all that, it can really be nerve-wracking.

Lenovo is just ol reliable. My G40-80 from 7 years ago has no issue with any OS I throw at it. And my work still has a ton of Lenovo (and HP) laptops from 5-8 years ago. If I'm buying anything expensive, I'd be comfortable with Lenovo because I trust them at this point, at least for their office worker oriented devices. Though I did settle for a HP laptop recently - the discount was just too good and they threw me an extra discount for the 16GB model and that got me lol

Asking for an ETA on anything these days is pretty much futile, if it is shipped on time that's probably the best anybody can do.

These systems are specifically built for Linux, not Windows, so I fail to see the issue. I own a couple of System76 systems and have run multiple distros of Linux without issue. Seems, given the lack of computer knowledge I’m hearing, the problem is user error. My relatively new HP runs Windows pretty well, but has some issues with Linux, which is fine because the HP is not built for Linux. That’s just the nature of the technology atm; get the proper hardware for the target OS.

Bruh, your audio has super static for some who identifies as "an audio professional." None of the issues are even System76's issue. You didn't do your research and used the system incorrectly. This video is less of any kind of review, and more a self identification of failure and inadequacy. This video is mislabeled as a review, because the only think you talked about is your own experiences which were your fault. (You didn't review the unit.) I honestly don't think you should even be using QubesOS. You're out of your depth. Full Disk Encryption featuring dual-boot where a GNU Linux system is on one partition, and Windows is on another is not technically possible. If you knew what you were doing, or bothered to research prior to purchase of the system, you'd know that. Henry should immediately fire you also for having an opinion of saying Adobe Premiere is "Garbage." Your issue was user error.
