  • There are so many encrypted messengers, which one is the best? As you may expect from me by now, I don't have a definitive answer. But I have a few I think are worth considering or avoiding...

    Thx for this very useful video!🙏🏼 It provided me some different views on messengers I already knew, as well as introduced me to messengers, I wasn’t aware of thus far.
    Minor hint: the video setup, appearing you “just” reading off the content. Cheers!

    Re: Wire, there are a few minor errors here. (1) Wire is registered in and legally based in Switzerland, but most of its development team are in Germany. (2) Wire wasn't owned by an analytics company, it was partly owned by a venture capital fund that was also invested in an analytics company.

    As a first time viewer, who just has arrived from the weekly SR. If I may have two tiny technical suggestions:
    - The sound effects on picture change/ float in/out is terribly annoying. They really make the video hard to watch/listen.
    - The other is a smaller one. You should probably have a transparent reflexive reading board in front of the camera lens, because eye contact during reading would also improve the whole video.

    Thanks for the video, but I would like to have some thing more explained like what are the differences between Session, Signal, SimpleX chat, Briar, Jami. Because, ok, you said that Session is anonymous and private but is not as secure, than Signal is secure and private but not anonymous, and SimpleX chat, Briar, Jami are P2P but what are the differences between them. And which should I use when I want to chat with my friends, family, etc. (people that I trust and know in real life), and second or the same for people that I don't trust that much. (sorry for my english)

    Thanks Nathan, great video. Is Briar con is not cross platform? Is there any reason for that? I mean is an app like Briar can't be on IOS because of Apple limitations?

    • @TheNewOil
      @TheNewOil  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would assume that is the case, but to be honest I don't know the technical reasons and limitations behind it. But yes, at this time, Briar is Android only (with a Windows desktop app in beta),

    I have a hard time trusting e2e encryption or any e2e with sensitive info. One has to trust the other end user will respect the privacy of the message and properly secure their device. For all we know, the message is getting sent to multiple devices owned by the user, some of which are either shared or easily accessible to others.

    • @trappedcat3615
      @trappedcat3615 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Vincent-Koltes Exactly. This is a greater issue with private communication, and it's not always a trust issue. A device can be compromised where there is no trust issue. The solution for me is to avoid communicating sensitive info online unless the risk warrants it.

    • @tkenben
      @tkenben 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's part of a bigger problem though; meaning, one that a platform or piece of software can't solve. You obviously have to trust the other person and their ability to use their device. This is why one should practice "privacy first". You should have in-person knowledge of who you are talking to, what you're social contract with them is, and how you will be talking to them in the future.

    The sad thing is that you rarely - if ever - have a choice in instant messaging.
    Every country has a standard app. In Brazil, WhatsApp got popular circa 2012, even before they rolled-out e2ee, because of groups, pictures, and free text messages. It's practically compulsory ever since, and quite frankly, I'm glad we didn't end up with something even worse.
    A messaging app is only useful if there are others to message with it, chicken-and-egg problem.
    The only way to make your peers install a second app is being extra annoying (which, fortunately, I can be 😂)

      @@TheNewOil Not all the criteria. This app are not open source. But for me I use so many years Threema . Now I use intensively TeleGuard. I’m more happy with this app than with Threema . I use this for ldr. Messaging is really important in ldr and video call. I try so many app over many years too. My choice is really this 3 messaging I say to you. Olvid is really good too but only for texting or secure call, example sex talking , no video call support yet. For xpal, I try this for a couple of weeks now in my ldr and so far is so fantastic for video calling.
