    I remember I acclimated mollies to higher PH with marine salt years ago. They thrived. In my opinion, its the best way to keep them.

      Thanks for watching! Many people seem to have had positive results acclimating Mollies to salt. Especially at lower brackish levels, where they seem to thrive and color up the best. In a SW setup they are short lived compared to other marine fish, but seem to do well, especially in lower flow systems.

    I never had luck with mollies in fresh water but my current fowlr tank houses 4 mollies and 1 clownfish and my mollies have just turned 1 year old with no health issues at all! They are such a treat to watch and the algae grazing abilities are top-notch.

      They do best acclimated to a high PH, brackish water tank, like African cichlids. I remember keeping them in fresh water alone, didnt do anything good for their health.

    Seeing them wandering around curiously is so adorable... And I just realized that's the Mollies start schooling together in saltwater, while in freshwater tank, they're tend to scattered around everywhere..

    I've found that green sailfin mollies (very closely related to wild mollies) tend to be stronger swimmers and can better handle the flow in a reef. They also become super vibrantly colored in a reef!

      The fact that they do better makes sense. We do not have a shop that sells wild mollies in my area. If we did, I’d definitely give them a try.

    Awesome fish and good at keeping algae in check before it can get a toe hold in your system. I got 8 of them at the moment in my 20 gallon frag tank as part of the algae control plan. While you can convert to SW in a couple of days its best to draw the process out over about 3-4 weeks for best results.

    I acclimated my mollies in a 2 hour period, though I did the drip method. All 4 survived and had babies within 3 days, though I was only able to catch one fry before they were eaten. They just had round two a few days ago and I was able to save at least 10 fry. Mine are actually wonderful algae grazers, especially with reduced feeding.

      Corey Graese very nice. I hope to raise some of the babies into adults, as well. I have to say though, it was fascinating watching the Duncan eat a few of the fry, before I could catch them.

    Great video, nice to see a long term aclimation process a lot of people do 24 hrs which seems to be the most common or some sort of drop in and pray, been thinking about these for a while for my little softie tank with more gentle flow, nice video! 👍

      @craftaquatic6472  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience, they do best in a tank with low flow. I’ve heard many have had success with an hour long acclimation, but if you have the time, acclimating over several days to weeks will mitigate losses, for sure. Thanks for checking out the video!

    Hi craft Aquatic - this is amazing - it must be very exciting for those little mollies, discovering corals for the first time! I will be adding my first fish to my new tank very soon :) - looking forward to your next video.

    Since Mollies breed like crazy, will they take over the tank? Do the saltwater fish eat the fry and keep the population in check?

    • @craftaquatic6472
      @craftaquatic6472  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, I thought they were going to breed like crazy when I first introduced them, but I have seen babies on only a few occasions since. The mollies themselves seem very healthy and happy, growing much larger than I am used to seeing. I’d still love to try and raise the fry, if I ever get the chance

    Raising mollys....
    Just feed them and make sure they have spots to hide and rest. Smaller fish lower current.
    I have a 55 gallon tank full of freshwater molly. They just breed like guppies and mice or rats or rabbits literally just drop fry all the time

    I find the flow acclimation to be much more of an issue then salt acclimation. I’ve acclimated hundreds of mollies to saltwater and never taken longer than 4 hours. I can’t recall the last time I lost one. Usually I have to turn the flow down on my system and ramp it back up over a week or so when I introduce the Mollies to a reef system. I also find mollies to be much heartier and less disease prone when raised in salt water instead of freshwater.

    • @craftaquatic6472
      @craftaquatic6472  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A 4 hour acclimation sounds reasonable. It had also been my experience that saltwater mollies tend to at least appear to be more healthy and robust. Flow is definitely an issue,. Mollies are not at all accustomed to the volume of flow in a typical high energy reef system

    How would you adjust this process to acclimate them to brackish water?

    • @craftaquatic6472
      @craftaquatic6472  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same process, I expect. Just stop the acclimation, when you hit your target SG level.

    How long do they live in Salt water

    • @craftaquatic6472
      @craftaquatic6472  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can live for quite some time, if they get past the first few months. Three of the 5 introduced to the Rack and Rubble frag tank in this video, are still alive and very healthy.

    Do mollies breed in saltwater?

    • @craftaquatic6472
      @craftaquatic6472  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ones in the video had fry in the beginning, but did not breed a second time after the acclimation. I have yet to have any luck breeding them in SW, but have read that others have. Not sure many have been able to raise them to full adults, since they are typically eaten very quickly.

  • @jabarsaqualife111

    You still got them?

    • @craftaquatic6472
      @craftaquatic6472  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not. I find Mollies to live anywhere from 2-4 years in a sw setup. Females live longer. With that said, I would not hesitate to add more, using the same acclimation process and have been planning to do just that

      @@craftaquatic6472 thanks! I love livebearers. I have a 20 gallon planted guppy tank, and 70 gallon platy, molly, swordtail tank. I've been wanting to step it up and start a coral tank, and I think mollies would be a cheap, easy, and beautiful fish to start with. Excellent quality video. 10/10.

      I think forums make too big a deal about white / blue light causing algae. If that were true, freshwater tanks would all be toast. What about all those past reef tanks lit with metal halide? I’ve seen algae explosions in all blue lit tanks, plenty. It’s just not as easy to see, so people think algae is caused by white light. Algae is a side affect of excess nutrients. Get those under control by reducing feeding and adding proper fish and you can light your tank however feels most pleasing.
