    Good to see someone doing the necesssary maintenance on an AU to keep ‘me going strong , good cars , easy to work on & parts relatively cheap . Having owned a dedicated lpg AU series 2 wagon for 14 years I reckon I can share a few tips for those wanting their AU’s to soldier on into a third decade of age . If your plastic header tank looks yellowed or crazed with age , replace it next coolant change as they can blow apart causing catastrophic cooling system failure , also check the other basic cooling system elements including all hoses ( you can buy a full silicone hose kit & use better wide and clamps for the price of a gates or Mackay set ) . The plastic infill piece above the back door on a wagon has two pins with clips inside the roof which DO LEAK WATER into the roof structure due to the angled recess it sits in & will rust out above the rear cargo window , best thing is to cut the pins off & seal back in place with quality sealant like sika . Next is the position of the power steering pump which sits directly over the alternator , so if you get even a slight leak it will at a minimum cause the bushes in the alternator to be chewed out or in major pump failure possibly cause a fire in the engine bay . You can either change the pump if it’s old as a precaution or get a fabricator to make a little spill tray that is mounted above the alternator to prevent any future leaks getting into the alternator , I got this done years ago , cost $160 in stainless , cheap insurance. If your auto tranny needs overhauling go to a tranny shop that does or used to do these when they were taxi’s , for example , I had quotes where I live on the central coast ranging from $1800 to over $2500, where as in green acre , a Sydney suburb , there is a shop called Fred’s autos , cost for rebuilt tranny & also a speedy sleeve with new seal to stop a rear main leak ( wise to change the rear main seal anyway while the auto is out when doing a tranny ) and to check & or replace the rear welsch plug as well , all up cost $ 1000 , why so much cheaper , volume of work , buys solenoids & other parts by the truckload , same job just way CHEAPER & driving home in 3 hours , warranty exactly the same , as he said to me , you stuff a taxi job up , you LOSE your business. Other things that often get overlooked are the PCV valve on the rocker cover $8 ( still available genuine ) & don’t forget to check the rubber grommet it sits in , that will set you back about $30 also genuine . The power steering pressure switch that is on the rack on an AU , if your car has big Kim’s it wise to replace it as failure will see you lose most of the fluid , possibly stuffing the pump and or rack at the same time , I think only after market available for these now . The diff breather hose if it’s perished will see possibly see water & gunk get into the diff oil , the hose is still available genuine & cheap as chips wise to replace when you next do diff oil . The last thing I will mention is the sump plug , the factory alloy sump can easily be stripped by mechanics & what they don’t tell you is the factory sump plug with inbuilt rubber seal is meant to be replaced EVERY OIL CHANGE , failure to replace it will inevitably see mechanics tightening the plug more & more each time till the obvious strip the sump & big headache with try to put a decent length helicoil in to enact a repair that will last , you really don’t want this as it’s a tight spot & generally a specialist job to do , easier to pay the $10 for a new genuine plug at least every third oil change & Dont tighten excessively. There it is , hope this helps keep your AU running well into the next decade !

    The au ford cars owners guide (in your glovebox) says to use mobil 424 fluid for the power steering which is a clear liquid.. Anything else makes the steering pump whine when turning the steering wheel. Im amazed how clean you have made the underbody it almost looks brand new and not a spot of rust anywhere.

    • @ianmontgomery7534
      @ianmontgomery7534 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an AU1 Fairmont wagon and I am amazed at how clean the underneath keeps itself. I do hose it under the guards but when we put it up on a hoist recently for tyres the tyre guy commented on how clean it was. So maybe they are self cleaning (if you have wet roads to drive over).

    Series 2 front end for the bigger brakes is an easy and affordable upgrade. Then run DBA Kangaroo Paw Slotted rotors with HD pads, and you won't ever have a problem.
    A K&N air filter paired with a Ford Big Mouth Intake and 2.5" exhaust, and your car will breath fine. ✌

    fuck yea son! well done! comprehensive service & thorough. I had to quite literally clap you for filling the oil filter prior to fitting, I do that every time as its far nicer to the bearings than dry run till pressure catches up. From my personal experience with sohc 4l fords, start with a single muffler 2.5' system, then extractors, then cam, Otherwise just go straight for a turbo, 3" dump into 2&3/4' straight through with hi flow 3" cat & valve springs- HINT- you don't have to remove head to do springs. Yea series 1 brakes suck! they are the same as e series which is a much lighter car. Look at territory brakes, fn huge & cheaper than a Brembo or premium upgrade. If you need any other advice on these fords just let me know here, ive been messing with them for years! also- holy shit, your bike stuff is mad af! great work bud, keep it up!
