    That’s nice. I liked the way you didn’t fast forward over the “boring” parts. I like the detail and I appreciated the way you didn’t do lots of fancy editing to make this appear slicker. Tree work is physically tough work and I enjoyed seeing this quickie advancing technique in action. Good work!

    Can we use carabiner instead of a quickie? Maybe two biners oppposite gates

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's my understanding that a carabiner is not good to use for a canopy anchor because the possibility of side loading. rated Quick/ Screw links or a quickie would be a better choice.

    • @aliray1165
      @aliray1165 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BinoH this is absolutely right, I’ve used a carabiner in error before and didn’t like the side gate rubbing against the limb. Then became aware of the side loading issue, the quickie resolves this. It’s also a “pulley” in one device. Like Bino states in the video the pin should always be put to the outside to avoid pressure which could potentially open the quickie.

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I made that accessory by cutting out sheet metal into 2 oblong plates, and connected them to a Rope Wrench slick pin with a bolt and a metal spacer. But I would recommend the one my son uses, it is called an "@HEIGHT- DOUBLE LEG STIFF TETHER FOR ROPE WRENCH" it is a double eye tether and it comes with a rubber grommet to help prevent the friction hitch form collapsing. We go over this product in our SRS video about the Michoacan if your interested. Thanks for the comment!!!

    Hello Bino. I am an "aspiring novice" climber with a build and date of creation similar you your own. As much as I struggle to climb, I am amazed at how easy you make it look. In this particular video, rather than using the butterfly / quickly method you demonstrated for retrieval from the ground, would it be just a easy to connect the closed end of your line to your hitch climber and descend with a MRS setup? I suspect you are trying to maintain the apples / oranges concept and wanting to maintain the SRS setup for work positioning, but it was a thought I had while watching the video. I very much enjoy your video creations and admire the skills you have and what you have taught Noah. Keep em coming!

    Bino, may I ask a couple of questions please...
    * How much do you weigh? ... i.e. your Michoacan is (only) 4 wraps and it holds you up. thanks!
    * Is it necessary to use the butterfly knot to connect the Quickie to *only* for the purpose of pulling down the rope from the ground? ... e.g. there is no safety or other advantage to connecting to the butterfly knot, correct? ...the use of the butterfly know is *only* for retrieving the rope from the ground, correct? thanks!
    Thanks for the video!

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      .I weigh 240lbs,
      .yes the michoacan has 4 wraps and it is a 24" prusik cord and it holds me up just fine, but if you have a longer cord you may need to take additional wraps to secure it, also depending on the diameter of the climbing line and the type of prusik cord you use it can vary to how well it will hold. If you decide to use different cords and different ropes be sure to practice low and slow!
      .No, The Butterfly Knot or other loop knots are required for a safe canopy anchor, all the Quickie is used for is to quickly make adjustments in your line while you are in the tree.
      Hope this answers your questions! Thanks for the comment!!!

    Appreciate the video. I was wondering if you are ever concerned with using the quickie to advance in Srt the higher up the tree you get. I am old school where when using Srt my ground guy and I hang on the line to make sure it holds before assent. Seems this may be a disadvantage to the quickie advancing technique while up in the tree? Your thoughts

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't feel like it's any different than advancing with the MRS system because it's a canopy anchor. When it's a base anchor and your advancing it doubles your weight on your tie in point.

    Hey mate! I think you’ve convinced me to get the Quickie. One question though: does putting it on a spliced eye and choking it off on a branch compromise it’s strength at all? Or is that specifically how the quickie is designed to be used as a canopy anchor?

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does not weaken the spliced eye and it's one of the ways you can use a Quickie.

    • @CaliforniaTravelVideos
      @CaliforniaTravelVideos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question based on the fact that a carabiner indeed is not designed to carry full weight crosswise on it's side (such as during a high-impact fall) while the construction and design of the Notch Quickie maintains its full strength on its side when braced on a tree limb.

  • @1stFlyingeagle
    @1stFlyingeagle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bino if you did the climb say to remove a limb by your tie-in point. Would you then just double rope down?

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are asking if I had to remove one on the fork I was tied into. I would pick another tie in or if removed the limb and there was enough of the fork left I would still use the same point. I might drop down to a lower crotch and retie. You could also double the rope down.

Do you have any recommendations on basic gear I'll need to get up the tree safely? I saw a Notch Sentry saddle with sliding D-Ring on sale for $50 would that work with a SRS Line? Could it also be used with a flip line and spurs? I'm 65 and I ain't ready to throw in the towel just yet.

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible myself I don't do well with the sliding D on SRS when I ascend. I tend to slip to one side and it hard for me to get out of it. I like a solid tie in. You might start with learning the Ddrt/ MRS system.

  • @michaelferguson167
    @michaelferguson167 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This helps, but how might I advance when I'm using a base anchor to ascend with a Chicane and Zig Zag to boot! I can get up high pitching the ball but I need to get higher to place my tie in point exactly where I want it. (Coming from a guy who is playing with all kinds of gadgets and only been up in the tree a handful of times). I like your videos and they do help but I have some different hardware so your content doesn't always apply specifically to my situation. And yes, I am learning some old school too, but I'm older and I want to make this as easy as is feasible.
    So far, just cutting 60-80 foot pines and spruce trees but eventually I'll get around to working with some hardwoods too.
    I'm not in a hurry, so I appreciate the slow and down to earth videos that I can put into action almost instantaneously.

    • @BinoH
      @BinoH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you done a natural crotch redirect with your Zigzag and Chicane? If you have done that it is almost the same to advance upward you just have to make sure you have enough rope.

    • @michaelferguson167
      @michaelferguson167 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bino H Not yet. I literally just started using them today and climbed up about 50 feet or so. Plan on going up higher tomorrow and just seeing how comfortable I am up there. Doing DDRT and SRT and just curious how you advance with that gear without taking everything apart. It’s easy DDT but I likely will be a SRT guy for the most part after I learn the basics. I could use a quickie (ordered 2 today) if it wasn’t for my base anchor I was using. That’s what stumped me.
