During lock down my friends and I had a "hideous paper challenge", we had to to go through our stash and find our most ugly papers and find some way of using we shared our finds beforehand and it was amazing what I hated someone else loved and what they hated some of the others loved, just shows beauty is on the eye of the beholder, so the other thing you could do is swap them! Thanks for the ideas Gwen
What a FAB idea!! I wish I had thought of that... it could have been included in with Path 4 "Remove it". Thank you so much for sharing this idea here for everyone 👌
I love that you added in remove them. I do try to use up what I have, but sometimes my ugly papers were actually created by me. I held on to ugly backgrounds for YEARS. Some were almost a decade old. I could save some and others just needed to go. Have you ever dry embossed and then added some acrylic paint? That is one of my favorites. You can get interesting, beautiful, and hideous results by using ugly paper on a gel plate.
Hey Jesse, glad you enjoyed this. Yes, remove them is one of the options some of us forget about. It's totally ok to let things go. I have not tried the dry embossing, I'll have to give it a go. Thanks for adding it here as a suggestion, it's been great to see what ideas we all have to add to the ones I shared.
Another thing that I do with those problem papers is to use them when I want to try out some new technique. That way if it doesn't work out I haven't wasted my favorite paper. This works especially well for things like interactive die sets - things that create flaps or movable pieces. If it does work, I now have a sample to store with my die and if it doesn't, I don't feel bad about tossing it and starting over - with another problem paper, of course.
I love the Remove It technique the best!😂 I recently went through my large stash and gathered a big box of paper I’ve been hanging onto for way too long. I donated it to the school down the street from my house and the teachers were beyond happy to receive it for upcoming projects. It was really hard for me to do, but I felt really good knowing it wasn’t just going to sit on a thrift store shelf. ❤
I could not agree more! It's funny, I find it hard to give stuff away but whenever I do, I NEVER regret it. I always end up feeling a calmness in my space and joy that I've shared something they will find useful. Appreciate you popping by the channel today and sharing your experience ☺️
I use mine as envelopes, I have embossed them and distressed the raised image or luster wax, or inked and aged the edges, Layered them as well and I use to cut out doll clothes with them for the old paper doll sizzix steel ruled dies
Tfs. Some great tips. I use a lot of my one sided ugly papers to make envelopes. It's a nice surprise for the recipient when they open it and find a pattern on the inside.
Hey Alison, I just thought too, if using single sided paper you can actually post letters with them, the white side on the outside and the bolder pattern on the inside. 👌 So nice to see you here today 🌸
I was thinking of doing a lot of these things as well. Art supplies are not cheap, even on sale lol, so I try to have extra patience when getting stuff like this, make sure I like most if not all of the prints.
So glad you found this useful and that you can use these ideas with your stash 🙌 So true, supplies are expensive so it's great when you can think of new ways to use them. Thanks for popping by the channel today.
Thank you so, so very much for this wonderful video on using up papers you don’t really love. I find from each paper collecting I get there is always something that doesn’t seem to work for me. I tend to use all my favourite designs first. Thank you for showing us your beautiful layouts. I love the idea of the vellum and grid layouts. I love a grid style layout for making papers go further. I never thought to combine this style with my least favourite or bolder prints. I think creating embellishments like flowers etc a wonderful idea and would even be perfect for card making to. Thank you once again for taking the time to make this video. I am sure everyone would find this very helpful.🙂❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so so much Maree, seems many of us do have those 'hard to use' papers. I use my favourites first too 🫣 Thanks for popping by today, glad you found this one super helpful xo
Great ideas! I continually fret about those unloved papers. Another idea is to cut a card front or mat from the ugly paper using a cover die such as Moroccan, lattice, or checks. Then ink can be added if it still doesn't suit your taste.
Omg what a helpful vid! Great ideas! Boy did I feel silly " if there's white on the back just use that " 🙈🤷♀️ of course! Why didn't I think of that 😂 thanks !
Thank you so much... A few creatives have said exactly the same thing about the white side 🤣 Sometimes it's the simplest things that are the BEST ever! So so glad you found this helpful xox
I feel the same... I actually don't mind a bold print at all, they are great to fussy cut out and can really make a statement, but when mixed with gag-worthy 🤣 colours, that's when we have a problem lolol I hope you found this one helpful 🌸
I love how you just put one picture on each page. I always feel I need to fill the page with pics. I also love the idea of velum over a loud sheet of paper. It’s amazing that you stitch on your paper! I’m definitely going to do that. You’ve given me a lot of ideas and have spurred me to get back into scrapbooking, if only for albums for myself! I gave away a lot of the paper that I really didn’t want to use.
Thank you Colleen... I really just love to create so I'm not in a rush as such to get all of my photos scrapbooked, that gives me the luxury of being able to put one photo on a page and think nothing of it. If you're after some paper stitching tips, I've made a video on that 🫶 th-cam.com/video/6MJVmT--NLo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=PNs8ajCrzzoCRbVC
That's a great idea... I think lots of these ideas can convert over to card makers and junk journal creatives. Thanks for popping by the channel today 💗
This was fabulous! I have way too many papers that I really don’t like. I’m going to pull them out and see which of these ideas I could use for them! And if I don’t I already have a place to donate them. One of my scrapbook buddies was asked for stuff for the children’s ward in one of the local hospitals.
I love your ideas and have actually done some techniques but I never thought about using the back side of ‘ugly’ paper to emboss. Your ideas with using vellum was fantastic also Thanks for sharing.
Good morning Gwen from Central Florida, just came across your channel and I am so glad I did...I'm sure we all have those "ugly papers" in our stash and sometimes we get stuck on how to use them up... I absolutely LOVE all your layouts, and ideas on how to use those "ugly patterned papers". I don't do scrapbooking but I do make cards and albums, this is a great way to use up those papers. Thank you for all your inspiration and creations... I'm going to share this video with one of my friends that loves to make scrapbooks❣️ Looking forward to watching your videos again. Happy Crafting ❣️🤗
Hey Debbie! I'm so glad you found me 🌸 Thank you so much for sharing my video, that's SUPER kind of you... Glad you found this helpful and yes absolutely you could use these ideas for your cards no problem at all xo Thanks for spending a little of your creative time with me today.
Great ideas! I use ugly paper to try out new cuts, stamps, inks...experiment with the ugly and not waste the beautiful, also dividers in my 12 X12 papers.
So many great ideas. I bought a large stack of paper for a cheap price, and now just have the "ugly" ones left. I'm definitely going to try some of your techniques!
I use them as small accents and boarders. It's amazing when bold prints combined with neutrals and other patterns in a finished piece. Another thing that can be nice is making folders or envelopes for other projects. That ugly print suddenly becomes cute in different applications. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed this one and shared how you've used these ideas and how well they have worked for you! Thanks for spending a little of your creative time with me today 🌸🌸🌸
Never gave it a thought to do the things you said. Now I can get some of those papers and do things to them. A day of just play.and get them ready to use. Thanks for sharing.
A FANTASTIC Tutorial for using Busy & Ugly Papers (I have thought that the Designer must have thought that they were pretty good?!) ... I have received Ugly Papers when I have purchased a Paper Pad... some Designs I LOVE, which is why I purchased the Pad but some papers are not so great! Thanks for the great ideas... 🙏💞
Hey Rhonda... yes, this is exactly how I've acquired the ones in my stash, it's always those paper pads 🤣 So many beautiful designs and then one or two that are a little less my style. I'm so glad you found this video helpful! 🎀
Awww, this comment has made my day! ☀️ I am so so glad you find my videos helpful and that you look forward to seeing them! xox I hope you have a bunch of ugly papers ready to use up 😊
I used some ugly papers to make a simple blank journal. After using stamps, practicing techniques and entering project notes...the papers didn’t seem so ugly afterall. They just needed a purpose, lol. Thanks for all of your tips!
I guess so... the thing is, what I might find ugly someone else may love 💗 I'm pretty sure there are some papers out there we can all agree on as being a little bit too much though.
As a middle school art teacher, I will sadly confirm that we are underfunded, and I would gladly accept hand me downs of paper (or other de-stashed items)
Awesome!!! Thanks for sharing this here, I have had some schools say 'no thank you' but maybe that's the lower grades. Hopefully many will see your comment here and think of the middle school teaching near by 💗 Thanks so much for all the work you do teaching and guiding young ones! ☺️
Gwen this is fabulous thank you 😊. I have lots of ugly papers which I've no idea how to use them well now I do. I love the vellum idea but I don't have a sewing machine..but I guess glue would show on a pocket???
You are so welcome! Yes, glue is tricky with Vellum because often it will show through. You could hand stitch it but that does take some time, you could also glue it and then use paper strips to create a paper frame to go around the edge of the layout on top of the glue.
thank you for reminding me about all these ideas. i do have a lot of ugly paper - you know those pads you buy for the really pretty pages, but there's some that you don't really care for - so these are wonderful ideas (especially the shaker page)!!! really great ideas!!
Yes, I totally understand this. THIS is how I've acquired most of my ugly paper, inside of a larger paper pad stack. So glad these ideas are helpful for you 👌
Wow a lot of fun ideas ! I'm going to break out all those uglies that I keep shoving back in the paper drawer !!! Thanks Gwen for sharing those great ideas , ❤ them !
Just watched this video for the second time, so many great ideas! 🤩 Think I have to watch it a third time and write them all down 😅 Thank you for the inspiration 🙏🏻
I really liked creating with Sunny Day too, I love how these pages turned out. Some of the prints were just a little 'extra' for me in big amounts. Part of the reason I love Maggie is her more bolder prints and patterns, but there are some that I've found tricky to work with unless I adjusted them.
Wow, such beautiful layouts, Gwen! Thank you for sharing all of these fantastic ideas. I tend to just use ugly paper to back layouts that I’ve stitched on. I’ll definitely be rethinking how to use them. 😊
Really great tips. But I just wanted to say how I love your scrapbook pages. You have very interesting layouts but they still keep the photos as the main focus. Lovely work!
I also use my ugly papers in my cardmaking - someone else might appreciate the pattern more than I do! (Plus I do a few cards for little kids who aren't bothered) Or they might just like having something handmade & not think about the pattern 😊 it also means I can keep the patterns I really like for myself 😅
Love love love these ideas! Thanks so much for sharing them so we can add them to our list... you're right, just because a pattern is not to our liking doesn't mean someone else won't love it. "Ugly to me" might be "bright and bold to you" 🌸 Kids particular like bold bright patterns so you're right, they could indeed love the print!
I really enjoyed this video and have subscribed. I’m hoping to get back into finishing up some of my scrapbooks. Your layouts are beautiful and very inspiring. 😊
I was actually waiting for someone to say this 🤣 I don't find them THAT bad actually, it's more that they are pretty bold in design. Someone else referred to them as 'ugly to me' papers which is a good way to describe it I think. What's a little bit too much for me, could very well be perfect for you and that's actually a good thing xo 🌷🌷🌷 Thanks so much for popping by the channel today xo
The best ideas I've seen so far for ugly paper. I don't scrapbook but make journals and those ideas would work for journals as well. Your art is beautiful. Just one suggestion, slow down. Take a breath. You were going a mile a minute for the first 18 minutes then you slowed down and it became more enjoyable to watch. Just a thought! Thanks for posting
This is wonderful Gwen! I love the way you scrap and really appreciate the tips you share to create the beautiful layouts. Many thanks Sue from Western Australia
Hey Leslie, I knew someone would say this... actually as it so happens, many of these I am pretty ok with. Someone else did say the same thing too 💗 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Glad you enjoyed this and thank you so much for your kind words about my layouts.
Hey lovely... not YET but I have started working on one because I do get a few questions about it. It's not as complicated as you might think, I did explain it a little more in this video here: th-cam.com/video/mAniXzDsops/w-d-xo.html I am planning on having that video go up in January so keep an eye out for it. xo
Thank you!! So glad you enjoyed these ideas! I love your channel so it's always so nice to see you here watching mine 🎀 I hope you're having a fab week lovely!! xo
Use them to experiment instead of good paper. I wanted to make sure I could make a certain mini album using 6x6 paper. Instead of using a gorgeous paper, I used a Ugly paper.
I have been meaning to do this video for the longest time... I will have to bump it up on my list 🎀 Thanks for letting me know it would be helpful for you.
Hey Kimberly 💗 I actually don't change them at all.... they are the same settings for when I sew on all of my pages. I'm on a Janome, stitch length is 10 and I just do a regular straight stitch. The only thing I would say is if you do sew fabric, have a separate needle for your paper craft, so one for fabric and one for paper crafts.
You have some great ideas (some even funny!) but I have to ask; Where did you find the "cat girl" on your green ivy "Always my darling", You are loved" page? What a hoot! The minute I saw "cat girl" I knew she was something I needed in my stash! I'm GUESSING you've fussy cut it out of some paper but I hope I'm wrong and it's a stamp and/or die!!! Thanks your sharing fun ideas! I'm not a scrapbook person (cards are my thing) but I do have me some ugly paper!!!! I can use these tips when making cards!!!
Thanks so much Gayle! I'm sorry to say that she is an ephemera piece from the Maggie Holmes Willow Lane collection. She is super cute hey!!! I had a quick google search to try and find you a link but that collection is quite old now. What I DID find was the @americancrafts digital store and they do have this collection digitally so you could get this and then print out as many of her as you'd ever want ☺️ www.acdigitals.com/products/maggie-holmes-willow-lane-full-collection?_pos=7&_sid=7b525e5de&_ss=r
Oh no!!! I didn't mean to do that!! I'm a HUGE Maggie Holmes fan and I don't actually think she has any truely UGLY papers... I swear 🤣🤣🤣 I'm sure you have many other brands of papers in that stash of yours waiting for a make over xox Thanks for popping by today lovely 💗

Glad you like them, I am a BIG fan of the vellum! Thanks for popping by today Carol. 🌸
Hi Hwen, i am soooo glad I found your channel. I have learned so much. Thanks again for the helpful, common sense tips. Happy New Year. ❤😊
I'm so glad you found me too Brenda! xo Happy New Year to you too 🎉
I really enjoyed this video and have subscribed. I’m hoping to get back into finishing up some of my scrapbooks. Your layouts are beautiful and very inspiring. 😊
Thank you so much for subscribing, I'm so glad you found me and enjoyed these ideas.
I have these papers, I didn’t know they’re ugly! haha 😂
I was actually waiting for someone to say this 🤣 I don't find them THAT bad actually, it's more that they are pretty bold in design. Someone else referred to them as 'ugly to me' papers which is a good way to describe it I think. What's a little bit too much for me, could very well be perfect for you and that's actually a good thing xo 🌷🌷🌷 Thanks so much for popping by the channel today xo
great ideas. thank you so much. hugs!! 💖
Love all of your ideas! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much! 😊 So glad you found this video helpful.
🥦‼️ Nice trick with the broccoli! ❤❤❤
🤣🤣🤣 Funny thing is NOW I love it, I oven bake it with salt and pepper and eat loads of it. Glad you enjoyed that analogy 🤣 🥦
Thanks so much Nathalie... I appreciate your kind words and feedback. So glad you found this video helpful 🌸🌸🌸

I also use ones I can't or don't want to use on a layout to make envelopes 😊
I love envelopes on layouts, such a fun interactive element. 💗
Just found you! Subscribed for all your ideas!!😊
Yay! and WELCOME!! So glad you found me 🎉
Fantastic ideas! Thanks so much 😊
You are so welcome! So glad you found this video helpful 💗
I would use every print here in large sections. They’re all beautiful. So are your layouts but I didn’t have an issue with a single one you showed.
Hey Leslie, I knew someone would say this... actually as it so happens, many of these I am pretty ok with. Someone else did say the same thing too 💗 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Glad you enjoyed this and thank you so much for your kind words about my layouts.
Great video. TFS

Oh my gosh! TH-cam let me leave only one like but I’d like to leave a ton!!!
Awwww thank you! So glad you found this helpful... your comment has made my day ☀️
Do you have a tutorial on how you sew the papers on? The sewing for the scallops page looks complicated.
Hey lovely... not YET but I have started working on one because I do get a few questions about it. It's not as complicated as you might think, I did explain it a little more in this video here: th-cam.com/video/mAniXzDsops/w-d-xo.html I am planning on having that video go up in January so keep an eye out for it. xo
Lots of great ideas thank you ❤
You are so welcome! 💗💗💗

Glad you like them! 🌸🌸🌸
Great ideas! Some papers overpower the photos!
That's actually a good way to put it... they do. 🌷
Just found your channel and I love your layouts!
Thanks so much! 😊 and welcome, I'm so glad you found me 🌸
Use them to experiment instead of good paper. I wanted to make sure I could make a certain mini album using 6x6 paper. Instead of using a gorgeous paper, I used a Ugly paper.
Ohhh this is brilliant! Thanks so much for adding it here for everyone 👏
Do you ever do videos on how you sew on your pages? I love this look but I don’t sew too much. Would be nice to see some hacks or shortcuts
I have been meaning to do this video for the longest time... I will have to bump it up on my list 🎀 Thanks for letting me know it would be helpful for you.
Could you share what settings your sewing machine are on for sewing the vellum to the scrapbook paper please?
Hey Kimberly 💗 I actually don't change them at all.... they are the same settings for when I sew on all of my pages. I'm on a Janome, stitch length is 10 and I just do a regular straight stitch. The only thing I would say is if you do sew fabric, have a separate needle for your paper craft, so one for fabric and one for paper crafts.
The sweet memory block page using uglier patterns topped with vellum would be good!
Yep... agree... I'm going to add something like that to my list. 🙌
You can also use those papers to create paper beads.
Someone else mentioned those and I have no idea what they are.... I'll need to look into it, thanks for the idea 💡
Thanks for the ideas. Ruth down under.
You are so welcome Ruth 🦘
I watched a video where the paper was made into gift or craft show bags
Great idea!! Thanks for sharing it here so we can all add it to our list 👌
You're awesome! How sweet of you do to that! Thank you! hugs, gr@@CreatedByGwen
@@GayleRobinson-bu2vt No worries at all... I might even get one too! xo
OMG why have I never thought to use the white side! LOL
☺️ Sometimes it's the simple ideas that are the best ones 🌸🌸🌸
*I feel attacked* 👀 some of her *ugly* examples are my favorite incorporations lmbo! However, thnx a ton for this vid my friend! 💓
How funny, your uglies are some of my faves 😅
But good ideas anyway
I had someone else say that! - It's funny, I feel like most of these are more 'bold' than 'ugly'.
