- Hi Creative friends, we ALL have ugly scrapbook papers in our stash and in today's video, I'm sharing the best ways to use them up! The easiest way to use up ugly paper is to choose one of 4 paths and the good news, all paths lead to getting those ugly papers gone! Another thing that I do with those problem papers is to use them when I want to try out some new technique. That way if it doesn't work out I haven't wasted my favorite paper. This works especially well for things like interactive die sets - things that create flaps or movable pieces. If it does work, I now have a sample to store with my die and if it doesn't, I don't feel bad about tossing it and starting over - with another problem paper, of course.
This is a great idea, especially with those dies that can be tricky to assemble. Thanks so much for adding that to our list :)

During lock down my friends and I had a "hideous paper challenge", we had to to go through our stash and find our most ugly papers and find some way of using we shared our finds beforehand and it was amazing what I hated someone else loved and what they hated some of the others loved, just shows beauty is on the eye of the beholder, so the other thing you could do is swap them!

I use mine as envelopes, I have embossed them and distressed the raised image or luster wax, or inked and aged the edges, Layered them as well and I use to cut out doll clothes with them for the old paper doll sizzix steel ruled dies

I love the Remove It technique the best!😂 I recently went through my large stash and gathered a big box of paper I’ve been hanging onto for way too long. I donated it to the school down the street from my house and the teachers were beyond happy to receive it for upcoming projects. It was really hard for me to do, but I felt really good knowing it wasn’t just going to sit on a thrift store shelf. ❤

I love that you added in remove them. I do try to use up what I have, but sometimes my ugly papers were actually created by me. I held on to ugly backgrounds for YEARS. Some were almost a decade old. I could save some and others just needed to go.
Have you ever dry embossed and then added some acrylic paint? That is one of my favorites.
You can get interesting, beautiful, and hideous results by using ugly paper on a gel plate.
Hey Jesse, glad you enjoyed this. Yes, remove them is one of the options some of us forget about. It's totally ok to let things go. I have not tried the dry embossing, I'll have to give it a go. Thanks for adding it here as a suggestion, it's been great to see what ideas we all have to add to the ones I shared.
Tfs. Some great tips. I use a lot of my one sided ugly papers to make envelopes. It's a nice surprise for the recipient when they open it and find a pattern on the inside.
Hey Alison, I just thought too, if using single sided paper you can actually post letters with them, the white side on the outside and the bolder pattern on the inside. 👌 So nice to see you here today 🌸
Great ideas! I continually fret about those unloved papers. Another idea is to cut a card front or mat from the ugly paper using a cover die such as Moroccan, lattice, or checks. Then ink can be added if it still doesn't suit your taste.

I was thinking of doing a lot of these things as well. Art supplies are not cheap, even on sale lol, so I try to have extra patience when getting stuff like this, make sure I like most if not all of the prints.

I love how you just put one picture on each page. I always feel I need to fill the page with pics. I also love the idea of velum over a loud sheet of paper. It’s amazing that you stitch on your paper! I’m definitely going to do that. You’ve given me a lot of ideas and have spurred me to get back into scrapbooking, if only for albums for myself! I gave away a lot of the paper that I really didn’t want to use.

I love those really bold patterns tho! Now the colors of some of them are gag-worthy
I feel the same... I actually don't mind a bold print at all, they are great to fussy cut out and can really make a statement, but when mixed with gag-worthy 🤣 colours, that's when we have a problem lolol I hope you found this one helpful 🌸

Thank you so, so very much for this wonderful video on using up papers you don’t really love. I find from each paper collecting I get there is always something that doesn’t seem to work for me. I tend to use all my favourite designs first. Thank you for showing us your beautiful layouts. I love the idea of the vellum and grid layouts. I love a grid style layout for making papers go further. I never thought to combine this style with my least favourite or bolder prints. I think creating embellishments like flowers etc a wonderful idea and would even be perfect for card making to. Great ideas! I use ugly paper to try out new cuts, stamps, inks...experiment with the ugly and not waste the beautiful, also dividers in my 12 X12 papers.

I used some ugly papers to make a simple blank journal. After using stamps, practicing techniques and entering project notes...the papers didn’t seem so ugly afterall. They just needed a purpose, lol. Thanks for all of your tips!

thank you for reminding me about all these ideas. i do have a lot of ugly paper - you know those pads you buy for the really pretty pages, but there's some that you don't really care for - so these are wonderful ideas (especially the shaker page)!!! really great ideas!!

I also use my ugly papers in my cardmaking - someone else might appreciate the pattern more than I do! (Plus I do a few cards for little kids who aren't bothered) Or they might just like having something handmade & not think about the pattern 😊 it also means I can keep the patterns I really like for myself 😅

This was fabulous! I have way too many papers that I really don’t like. I’m going to pull them out and see which of these ideas I could use for them! And if I don’t I already have a place to donate them. One of my scrapbook buddies was asked for stuff for the children’s ward in one of the local hospitals.

The best ideas I've seen so far for ugly paper. I don't scrapbook but make journals and those ideas would work for journals as well. Your art is beautiful. Just one suggestion, slow down. Take a breath. You were going a mile a minute for the first 18 minutes then you slowed down and it became more enjoyable to watch. Just a thought! Thanks for posting

A FANTASTIC Tutorial for using Busy & Ugly Papers (I have thought that the Designer must have thought that they were pretty good?!) ... I have received Ugly Papers when I have purchased a Paper Pad... some Designs I LOVE, which is why I purchased the Pad but some papers are not so great! Thanks for the great ideas... 🙏💞

I use them as small accents and boarders. It's amazing when bold prints combined with neutrals and other patterns in a finished piece. Another thing that can be nice is making folders or envelopes for other projects. That ugly print suddenly becomes cute in different applications. Great video.

Gwen this is fabulous thank you 😊. I have lots of ugly papers which I've no idea how to use them well now I do. I love the vellum idea but I don't have a sewing machine..but I guess glue would show on a pocket???
You are so welcome! Yes, glue is tricky with Vellum because often it will show through. You could hand stitch it but that does take some time, you could also glue it and then use paper strips to create a paper frame to go around the edge of the layout on top of the glue.

I was actually waiting for someone to say this 🤣 I don't find them THAT bad actually, it's more that they are pretty bold in design. Someone else referred to them as 'ugly to me' papers which is a good way to describe it I think. aww i love Sunny Day and anything Maggie Holmes.....I did get citrus twist though, for quite a while and I do have some hideous ones hidden away.
I really liked creating with Sunny Day too, I love how these pages turned out. Some of the prints were just a little 'extra' for me in big amounts. Part of the reason I love Maggie is her more bolder prints and patterns, but there are some that I've found tricky to work with unless I adjusted them.

Use them to experiment instead of good paper. I wanted to make sure I could make a certain mini album using 6x6 paper. Instead of using a gorgeous paper, I used a Ugly paper.

You can also use those papers to create paper beads.

Do you ever do videos on how you sew on your pages? I love this look but I don’t sew too much. Would be nice to see some hacks or shortcuts

Could you share what settings your sewing machine are on for sewing the vellum to the scrapbook paper please?
Hey Kimberly 💗 I actually don't change them at all.... they are the same settings for when I sew on all of my pages. I'm on a Janome, stitch length is 10 and I just do a regular straight stitch. The only thing I would say is if you do sew fabric, have a separate needle for your paper craft, so one for fabric and one for paper crafts.
I've learnt the hard way not to buy scrapbook papers when I'm in a hurry. I like ferretting through 2nd hand stalls, market stalls and charity stalls and I get excited when I find beautitful papers but I always feel pressured to flick through the papers fast so I don't get in someone else's way and I end up with a crazy mix of papers, some of which I do not like. I have learnt to take my time and choose very carefully, buying only what I really like.

I've obtained papers in all sorts of ways, including in paper pads. Most of the papers are beautiful but there's always ugly papers lurking in there somewhere! When I first started scrapbooking over 20 years ago I just bought everything I could get my hands on. Now, I'm much more discerning! @@CreatedByGwen
Ahhh yes, we all do that when we first start lolol... then we get to understand what we will use and what we really love. So glad you found this video, I hope it helps you use any ugly papers you might still have kicking around.
