Miami was so patient. Beasley was there for 4yrs and then also came back. Heat gave a lot of players 2nd chances and opportunities for hidden gems. Winslow had all the chances.

There were stretches where he averaged 14-6-5 on 46% FG and 39% 3P (36 games in 18-19), 19-9-7-1-1 on 41% FG and 43% 3P (3 games at the beginning of 19-20) but they ended with injuries. He had low usage percentage (career best: 21.9% in Memphis). Also Coach Spo liked to experiment with Winslow like putting him on center position against Embiid in the playoffs.

This is the problem with today's NBA, they honestly think one year in college prepares you for the NBA, it does not. The most likely scenario for a one and done player is they either end being a bust, a rotational player, or an average player. One and done players who leave college too early hurt their development and they end up sucking forever, unless they go to a team that teaches them the necessary skillsets for them to be a solid player (see Andrew Wiggins).
i still remenber how thing escalated badly when he got concusion after a hit against milsap head to head due to a leonard push. milsap was bleeding and seems not that bad for justise but he miss some game cuz he suffered vertige and headache. then he injured his back he return T_T

Players like Justise Winslow, I wish one more season in college basketball would do wonders. In the NBA there is no time to continue to learn and get acclimated to the difference of games played a season from HS to the pros within 3 years. At the same time, I cannot blame players like Winslow entering the draft ASAP when eligible. It's touch and go and hoping that a very talented player like Winslow doesn't get seriously injured within the first few years.
He was too injury prone… he was arguably the best perimeter defender on the team, at the time if I remember correctly it was between Winslow , Stanley Johnson and Kelly Oubre. We didn’t pick Booker because the 3 point era was just starting to kick off, we still had wade and Bosh on the team so he fit their timeline better but Bookers numbers in college are simply amazing

Watched Justise play in Miami and injuries have just really hurt him and with it, set him back when it comes to progressing. Still see his ceiling being Ron Artest. His defense is second to none and still has age on his side (25) to really changed it around.
A big part of why Miami gave up on him was because of a disagreement on injuries. He got hurt in the 2019/20 season, and Heat doctors cleared him to play when he didn't think he was ready yet. He played a few games with the Heat after that injury, but never really looked like himself and ended up out of the rotation before his trade to Memphis. I think *that* is what he was referencing in that quote about being patient, that Memphis waited for him to get to a point where he felt physically confident, while he felt that Miami pushed him onto the court early.

He's carving out a nice role for himself on the blazers right now. Just a big wing defender/playmaker type. He gets to play free without being the main playmaker and can operate as a pace pusher and a release valve creator. I think it's a turning of the page for him, as long as he stays healthy
This video really downplayed his injuries. He was never able to develop his game because he was always hurt. He's yet to play a full 82 game season. Those injuries robbed a bit of his athleticism. But when you watch him play, he has a place in the NBA.
I’m a Duke fan and I genuinely thought he was the future. A high energy superior athlete, 3 and D, could play the 4 in small ball and even played well as a point guard in spurts with the Heat…
He taught the Heat a valuable lesson. Shooting is the prime skill in the NBA and sometimes mature athletes can dominate without excellent shooting skills in NCAA ball but the NBA is a different breed of animal.
Injuries were a big part of his downfall, but I think the heat pulling a tyreke Evans/sacramento move on Winslow hurt his career too. He was very good as a point guard but they didn't keep him there
I remember him at Duke with Okafor and thinking, this guy cannot fail in the NBA! His motor and physical abilities were extremely good, even though he cannot shoot, his defense and driving to the basketball should make him at least a 10+ scorer with great defense! I still think he can a valuable player as a 8th to 9th playing off the bench! If Wiggins did it, I think Justice can also do it!
He was great for the clippers before they traded him. Played hard played D well and won us a few games. And we got norman Powell for him. Hes a solid nba player and hope he finds a home 🙏

This man could lowkey be perfect for the Warriors. Thrives in the run-n-gun offense, can spot up 3 (for the most part), and be a tough wing defender thats adds size for them. No need for him to create his own shot on their team.
Nope. The Warriors need a big Center who can play 15-20 minutes against Ayton, Jokic, Giannis and Embiid. They don't need a 6'6" who can't shoot. Wiggins and Kuminga is bigger and more athletic than him.
I think Spoelstra is very good at getting the best of his players. Many players look great in the system; then fall off once they leave. There are obviously other attributes; but Dion, Richardson, Whiteside, Tyler Johnson, James Johnson, Rio - all had their career peaks in Miami, so of these guys were still young when they left too.
He’s one of the rare top 10/15 prospects I’ve been very wrong about normally when I like prospects the pan out like PG and Kawhi to name a couple. Hope he can rebound a bit here and find a role
The best ability is availability. Lebrun is great for many things, but mainly he is always available and at the top of his game for how big and athletic he is. If Winslow had lebron endurance, he’d be awesome
When my team (the Heat) see an opportunity to get someone to fill a roll they usually are spot on. Winslow knew how we played and he still put on the hat when he was drafted. We gave him 5 seasons. That’s patience. He was just not NBA ready as we thought he was.
As a grizzlies fan, I was so optimistic for his return from his hip surgery. Even after he returned and clearly wasn’t to form I still held out on him…. Til we traded him . Still hope he can have some kind of resurgence tho

Even as a Heat fan, I always felt that if he got drafted to a team like the Kings, despite their rep for not developing players well, he could've a somewhat better career. Especially being there in the recent years, he could've just focused on being a defensive player and developing his shot rather than his playmaking. Their pace would've matched him more as well. Of course, knowing the Kings and their baffling development decisions like what they did with Tyreke Evans, it's not a guarantee he would've gotten that there either.

Yea I definitely remember the comparison to Harden 😂. The only thing he had in common with Harden was being left handed and being from Houston where Harden played. I thought of Winslow being more like a shorter, poor mans version of Paul George at best.

Crazy this was put out 8 days ago. He's killed it for the Blazers the last couple of games.
He's carving out a nice role for himself on the blazers right now. Just a big wing defender/playmaker type. He gets to play free without being the main playmaker and can operate as a pace pusher and a release valve creator. I think it's a turning of the page for him, as long as he stays healthy
This video really downplayed his injuries. He was never able to develop his game because he was always hurt. He's yet to play a full 82 game season. Those injuries robbed a bit of his athleticism. But when you watch him play, he has a place in the NBA.

I’m a Duke fan and I genuinely thought he was the future. A high energy superior athlete, 3 and D, could play the 4 in small ball and even played well as a point guard in spurts with the Heat…
I remember him, really all I thought about him was he was going to be a good 3&D wing player. I didn’t really see any star potential.
He taught the Heat a valuable lesson. Shooting is the prime skill in the NBA and sometimes mature athletes can dominate without excellent shooting skills in NCAA ball but the NBA is a different breed of animal.
Injuries were a big part of his downfall, but I think the heat pulling a tyreke Evans/sacramento move on Winslow hurt his career too. He was very good as a point guard but they didn't keep him there

I remember him at Duke with Okafor and thinking, this guy cannot fail in the NBA! His motor and physical abilities were extremely good, even though he cannot shoot, his defense and driving to the basketball should make him at least a 10+ scorer with great defense! I still think he can a valuable player as a 8th to 9th playing off the bench! If Wiggins did it, I think Justice can also do it!
He was great for the clippers before they traded him. Played hard played D well and won us a few games. And we got norman Powell for him. Hes a solid nba player and hope he finds a home 🙏
Just a suggestion since he is still young, he should develop his jump shoot. Then sign to Raptors. Nick Nurse is a good mentor.

This man could lowkey be perfect for the Warriors. Thrives in the run-n-gun offense, can spot up 3 (for the most part), and be a tough wing defender thats adds size for them. No need for him to create his own shot on their team.
Nope. The Warriors need a big Center who can play 15-20 minutes against Ayton, Jokic, Giannis and Embiid. They don't need a 6'6" who can't shoot. Wiggins and Kuminga is bigger and more athletic than him.
I think Spoelstra is very good at getting the best of his players.
Many players look great in the system; then fall off once they leave. There are obviously other attributes; but Dion, Richardson, Whiteside, Tyler Johnson, James Johnson, Rio - all had their career peaks in Miami, so of these guys were still young when they left too.

The best ability is availability. Lebrun is great for many things, but mainly he is always available and at the top of his game for how big and athletic he is. If Winslow had lebron endurance, he’d be awesome

When my team (the Heat) see an opportunity to get someone to fill a roll they usually are spot on. Winslow knew how we played and he still put on the hat when he was drafted. We gave him 5 seasons. That’s patience. He was just not NBA ready as we thought he was.

As a grizzlies fan, I was so optimistic for his return from his hip surgery. Even after he returned and clearly wasn’t to form I still held out on him…. Til we traded him . Still hope he can have some kind of resurgence tho

9:08 he wasn’t thrown into that role out of nowhere, he expressed many times he wanted to play the PG role more and was given more responsibility ball handling and distributing the ball
It's sad because when he did play he really showed potential and really looked like he could be an all-star but injuries always derailed this mam's growth
Imagine if Justise could have had Jimmy AND Wade as mentors in his early career. I really wish he didn’t become so injury prone. There was a lot of good to his game overall.
Even as a Heat fan, I always felt that if he got drafted to a team like the Kings, despite their rep for not developing players well, he could've a somewhat better career. Especially being there in the recent years, he could've just focused on being a defensive player and developing his shot rather than his playmaking. Their pace would've matched him more as well.
Of course, knowing the Kings and their baffling development decisions like what they did with Tyreke Evans, it's not a guarantee he would've gotten that there either.
