Doing the research on this and having the article/player quotations describe how smooth and "Pop" like it was where he just announced that he was the coach, I knew I had to put that line in there haha
as a long time spurs fan, i remind people that the heat's biggest lead in the 2014 finals was like 6 or 8 points. that was a clinic in team play. we got our revenge.
@lucabertolisantospinto6709 Lol 😆 Lakers fans that watched have no choice but to agree. I'm parallel to you all as a Heat fan but Tim Duncan was my favorite overall player. And I was tired of the Laker hype. Since 2002, I knew that the Spurs were going to beat the Lakers in 03, especially when the Lakers didn't make any trades or improvements. Going up against PoP in a system that's around Duncan? That just spills disaster.
The defeat in 2013 was such a gut punch that it elevated the feeling of satisfaction you got as a Spurs fan watching the way they won in 2014. I remember people on the Heat side characterising it as, "Killing the Killing Machine." It was the best feeling I ever had as a fan of the team since the first Championship win.
Maaan, if Joker was drafted by Spurs, they would created another dynasty. He fits perfectly with his personality and style of play...now he is stuck with G league Jamal and Every 3rd game shooter MPJ.
Pop was given a free reign to run the team and the organisations so he has a lot more say than other coaches in the team Peter Holt ran the organisation like an old school business
You don't gain free reign of an organisation without being an incredible individual both off and on duty. He sounds like a pillar and a shield of a man
Pop. The Father of learning. the Captain of brothers. and the One of straight to the point of what are we here for - to be great men, leaders, champions.
I appreciate that a lot, thank you! Always trying to make sure they flow well and do connect to the others. The next two should have a really nice connection to this as well!
Phil Jackson was a master of psychology who dismissed the Spurs’ sweep of the Lakers in 1999 in order to instill confidence in the Lakers once he became their coach. And it worked. He brought the Lakers three straight championships in 2000-2002. Meanwhile, Popovich actually learned from Jackson. In 1999 and 2003 the Spurs relied heavily on Tim Duncan, and secondarily on David Robinson. But starting in 2005, Poovich emphasized a read and react, share the ball offense similar to Jackson’s triangle offense. This allowed Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili to initiate the offense. Duncan shared scoring responsibilities more and more through the rest of his career.
that 2014 teams was magical and a HUGE piece that doesn't get enough credit is Boris Diaw and to a lesser extent Tiago Splitter, their passing vision was amazing.
He was the head coach at Pomona-Pitzer college and worked as an assistant for Larry Brown before becoming the GM of the Spurs, he had professional and coaching experience.
I know they lost in 2013 but games 6 and 7 were classic games. We often see really good series then get to game 7 and it's a blowout but despite the Spurs losing that heartbreaker they came ready for game 7. LeBron just went off that game and Wade had a really good game and it was just enough to eek out the victory but the Spurs were right there. That's a credit to Pop and the players for being ready for game 7.
I remember when pop kept telling to keep fouling shack, because he was so bad at making free throws, it was funny the way pop looked at oneil when he had to go to the line.
@@kerry-j4m Phil was a star wrangler, he managed egos, and created winning formulas in teams that should have been doomed. Pop finds star players that fit, and builds an entire culture around them. Two very different coaching styles, you can easily make an argument for either of them.
That was injustice done to former coach Bob Hill. He had 2 winning seasons, lost Robinson to a season ending injury, and gets fired even though it was predictable the Spurs wouldn't make the playoffs? And I still believe Pop shouldn't have taken out Duncan in that game 6 finals match with the Heat that cost them the chance to close out the series. That said, I'm not saying he isn't a great coach. He practically started that load management tactic, as a preventive measure to keep his aging trio fresh for the playoffs and minimize possible untimely injuries
Pop taking out Duncan in game 6 (which they were getting favorable calls throughout that game 🎮, you're right ✅️. However, people need to stop leaving out the contextual fact that Spo shouldn't have taken out Wade, Bosh, and Bron in game 1 leading to Parker making a comeback steal game. So it evens out.
I don't want to sound nitpicky here but I think the caption on 17:13 should've been "Parker's" and not pocket. Overall great video my guy, hope to see you grow be more known.
When Lebron was signing with a new team before LA, I always played around with the thought if he went to SA. SA is no LA, lets get that straight. But I feel like they both respect each other alot and that Lebron would actually defer to Pop in-game.
Kerr has Steph Curry so there are going to be a lot more 3 point attempts than anything Popovich draws up. Pop likes quick passing and a big man to finish easy shots off in the paint.
The warriors successful system was based on the 2014 spurs. Passing, unselfish plays, etc. Emphasis on 2 way play, offence and defence. That said you work with your talent and GSW has Steph and will use him.
Popovich learned the worst of USAF leadership. It doesn't matter how good you are. You just need to be in the right place at the right time, and those conditions are set by the preceding regime (who never gets the credit). The Spurs were primed for a run before Popovich arrived. So when Robinson got injured, Pop seized the opportunity and fired Bob Hill. That gifted him Tim Duncan, and the rest is history. A 6th grader could have coached that team. -- Timmy retired and it all fell apart.
Pop didn't have "no professional experience" ... Don Nelson, who considers Pop one of his best friends, hired him with the Golden State Warriors and helped him get the Spurs job.
I remember when he fired Hill and hired himself...I said something akin to "yeah, that's Definitely fair and gonna work out great; only the GM could lead the team IN GAME.... disaster in the making..." 😂 Yeah I was just a liiiiiiiiiittle bit off on that one

Man, you didn't mention that he pretty much only got his job as GM because the owner was a former military man who really liked that Pop was ex-military. Like it really felt like you were setting that up, but you just didn't say it lol. An while it's implied from him being GM, you didn't mention that he straight up fired his coach and hired himself lmao, and it definitely wasn't Hill's fault that they started off so poorly, they had just gotten slammed by injuries, though I do think Hill deserves some blame for his utterly moronic decisions in the 95 WCF, like choosing to bench Rodman to start the game because he was late.
