I breed fish...and I spend way more on them than I end up making. If you've never owned these types of fish you have no clue the time energy and money that go into it honestly.
Thank you Mama. I have fish too and in her case it is likely mostly a hobby. Unless she had an entire fish room and I am talking 30 or more tanks, she is not in the fish business by a long shot. I doubt serious if she is actually making that much money selling her fish. Most private pet stores give you little money for your fish. The chain store usually will not even take them.
The expense of raising them to a sellable size probably outweighs what the store would give you anyway

I only have a 20 gallon and 5 gallon and I agree. It’s very time consuming. I could only imagine if I had bigger tanks the amount of time it would take for maintenance and upkeep.
I had up to 34 aquariums at one time and bred Many different species of fish. I was even published in tropical fish hobbyist magazine. But I never could make money on it.

Is this woman a fish mogul, who has found a way to exploit the system for double the profit? Even thought, it takes years of experience to infiltrate fish underworld and many people have died when undercover, I'm gonna try to investigate the rules of fish dealing, and riches behind the spawn. The question is, did she go to court to spit in faces of her fellow Americans? To feel a rush when lying about profit her business generates?
On yearly basis, fish fanatics pay lot of money to breed fish and keep some of them alive. One person wouldn't be able to take care of as many tanks, as it takes, to have their her disability benefits revoked. Also, such investment would be huge, requiring extra space and labour. I can't imagine that one hobbits could possibly generate a sensible annual revenue. I don't think it's their goal either; it takes too much work and time for fishkeeping to be a profitable side hustle. To summarize, the money is poor and competition is huge. They might have a good month with few sells, without casualties or vet visits, but then the fungal outburst comes in and they spend all the pocket money they've made, plus extra. It's certain - fish itself is less valuable than costs of keeping it alive.
People, who collect social benefits or pension, can work under certain conditions; selling fish evey other week or month, would contest person's disability in the eyes of commission. *Probably*, she'd have to earn above minimum wage to have to return part of her benefits, for the time she generated bigger profit. To have her privilege revoked, she'd have to work a job that didn't fit regulations for people with disability certificate. If she made noticeable money, she'd be caught right away because it's difficult to hide it even in cash.
It seems, breeders exchange and sell overstock to make some space and pay for tanks. Fish can't be on birth control they breed like crazy, making the tank overcrowded. The guy said that newborn fish sold for less because they were likely to die. It looks like, having a fish is like having an alien pet. It lives in a very particular environment that is drastically different from our dry world and require sophisticated filtering systems. Additionally, water must be at a correct PH level, measured and adjusted with chemicals. Plus, supplements and other products that fish must be fed or bath in, and spare tanks. In a long run, it adds to a handsome amount. I can't imagine how much does fish veterinarian it's a very popular specialization, so add that. I can't even imagine what else is involved in a expensive life of a fish.
People can work part time to earn money while on disability to supplement a living wage. There's just a cap on what they can earn. She could claim it for taxes and still be doing it on the up and up as far as disability is concerned. Granted she doesn't, but she can still earn part-time money while on disability. And yes I know this for a fact because I'm in that same position as well. Perhaps do some research?

I’m old, but in my day if you couldn’t do your job, you quit and found another job that you could do. But there was only unemployment then. I think today many people think why should I work for a few bucks more than I can make on disability or unemployment.

Hmmmm I bet she doesn’t let Social Security know she’s “earning” money. They count that as income. I was getting disability payments for a few years and you have to report all income from jobs or even sales of properties.
It can actually be difficult for something to be considered a business rather than a hobby tax wise depending on where you live. Even if it sounds like someone should be making more than enough, your tax preparer/accountant/fiduciary may still mark it as a hobby. Fish *can* be very expensive depending on the setup so let’s not assume she’s lying since we’re not her tax expert

I had 12 tanks at one point, it just happened one. I’d get fish and then there would be a problem so then you need a smaller tank and then you want another fish that can’t go with the ones you already have or they need different water conditions. Within 2 years I went from 2 tanks to 12 🤣

Amazing how many people in the comments here don't know anything about the fish hobby lol! If she was breeding fish for a job shed have to have an entire fish room with racks upon racks of like 20 and 40 gallon tanks that are specifically for breeding and raising fry. Even then you would need a job to support you unless you become very successful which is very hard and rare especially depending on your area, not to mention the hobby is so expensive. Its very common for people to sell their fry and trade them in for other needed supplies. You can even trade them to your local fish store to get credit so you can buy more food, water conditioners etc.
Just about everyone in this hobby has more than 1 tanks, more than 3 even I'd say. I currently own 5 tanks and Im not even a hobbiest who breeds and sells, but I also cant put a lot into my tanks because of it or I'd go hungry.
(Also! Fish tanks shouldn't smell!! To everyone saying her house must stink! If your fish tank smells that means something is seriously wrong, the tank is probably full of waste which means you arent properly maintaining water parameters or you have too small of a tank. Her angel fish and bristle nose plecos certainly wouldnt breed unless their water was the correct parameters and they had proper tanks to feel comfortable and established in! You should be able to walk straight up to a fish tank and smell an earthy plant smell at most if you are doing it right.)

Fish tanks shouldnt smell. If they do their fish are probably suffering 💀thatd mean they haven't done any tank maintenance or have too small of a tank for their fish. You should be able to walk straight up to a fish tank and take a big whiff and smell nothing. Or you might get an earthy smell if its dirted and planted!
I sell plants as a hobby. I basically sell a plant to buy another plant. I have a registered business but also no profits. I have hundreds of plants.I don't have the time to make it profitable. I believe her with her hobby.
