Thanks for this interesting and informative video. Yet, I have another question. I have cash on my IBKR Ireland account. For the interest I earn, IBKR cuts a withholding tax. My question is, when the time comes to declare my gains from this interest would that be enough to say that I already paid the tax to Ireland hence pay nothing to Belgium or should I do something about it in order not to be double taxed? Thanks in advance for your answer.
Hi, sorry for the delay in our response. You'll still have to declare the interests in your yearly tax form even if you've paid some withholding taxes via IBKR. I would contact them to get further clarity on this topic.
Hello, I would like to invest with Trade Republic in action and ETFs, but I saw that they didn't help with any taxes on your website. So I'm afraid, and I would like to know what I should declare and pay, like taxes, if I only use the application to have the automatic payment each month in the actions that I choose. (It costs nothing from the app for this type of investment; that's why I'm asking the question.)
You have to declare the TOB for every purchase and sale. Here's a guide that helps explain it: curvo.eu/article/tob Also it depends on the types of ETF and stocks you buy. If you choose distributing funds, you'll have to pay the 30% dividend tax too: curvo.eu/article/dividend-tax-etf-belgium Note that you also have to declare your account to the National Bank of Belgium. Due to all these complexities, we don't suggest you open an account with them but rather use a Belgian broker that handles everything. It's less of a headache!
If I have my balance on the app lightyear which is giving me monthly interest on my cash. Do I need to submit these montly interests to pay taxes on them.
Yes, you'll need to submit all the interest you've received in the year when you declare your taxes. These interests have to be declared in the section "1444-2444" on your tax form. You'll have to pay a tax on it!
Thanks again for yet another interesting video. I have a question. You mentioned that if I select distributing fund and when I get the capital gain, it will be taxed 30 %. Let's assume I am investing in an accumulating fund, and I see some 10 % profit in a year, and I take the money out. Will the capital gain still be tax free as it is an accumulating fund? Or is there a lock in period, for example, I cannot exit for the first 10 or more years? Thanks a lot for the answer in advance
So let say i put 20k in an ETF, let it sit for 5 years, i sell all of it for 30k, cash it all out, how much tax do i pay? Is that considered a dividend then? No right?
@@axelvnk Hi! Thanks for watching the video. Considering it's an accumulating ETF, it's not considered a dividend. With accumulating funds, the dividends are directly reinvested into the fund, thereby bypassing the tax. As there isn't any capital gains on stocks in Belgium, you don't have to pay any tax. The only tax you would have to pay is the Belgian Tax on transactions ("beurstaks" or "taxe boursière") when you sell your positions. This ranges from 0.12 to 1.32%. We wrote about how to calculate the TOB tax of an ETF here if you want to learn more: curvo.eu/article/how-to-calculate-the-belgian-transaction-tax-of-an-etf
Hi Thank you for the video and for the wikifin tip as well as the links. So if I have a stocks account in USD but the last year has been inactive and now I take the profit from the strong USD, how do I calculate the taxes ?
Hi Evangelos 👋 If you're paying taxes in Belgium: there's no capital gains on stocks but you will have to pay the stock transaction tax (also known as the TOB). That tax has to be paid every time you buy and sell a position. With which broker are you with? Some will automatically deduct and pay it for you. You can learn more about brokers here: curvo.eu/article/best-broker-in-belgium-to-buy-vwce-etf - as it's all in USD, I would speak to your broker directly and ask them for some guidance. Good luck!
Hi👋Thanks for your comment. When you're investing in an ETF, make sure you choose an accumulating fund. You should be able to see on Degiro's dashboard when you're buying whether a fund is accumulating or distributing. Hi, thanks for this informative video! I recently moved to Belgium and i'm now completely lost with these weird taxes... When is an individual considered a speculator? I personally hold around 10 stocks, partially selling gains and cutting losers. I rebalance once per month to maintain equilibrium in my portfolio. Would that be seen as speculator here?
@@curvoeu Thank you for your quick reply! I would have several follow up questions, but I'll keep it short 😄 Every time I rebalance my portfolio, I would have to pay TOB for each stock, correct? I'm interested in US stocks, is there a way to open a broker nominated in USD to avoid FX fees? Also, is it possible to trade futures and options in Belgium? Would TOB be due as well? Are these considered more speculative and would trigger capital gains tax? Thank you in advance! Appreciate it!!!
@@valiente4153 That is correct. The TOB is applied for every purchase or sale. As for opening a broker nominated in USD, Interactive Brokers offers this option (including trading futures and options). @@curvoeu Thank you very much! To clearify TOB is always due regardless of the instrument traded? (had hopes that futures and options maybe excluded...) This seems so arbitrary in Belgium. Once considered most likely all my trading and investing would be considered speculative and capital gain would be due??

There’s no capital gains on stocks in Belgium. However, you have to pay the Belgian Stock Transaction Tax (also known as the TOB for every purchase and sale of stocks in including trading!).
Thanks for the information. I have probably watched over 100 different videos. I am about to make my first investment. I am thinking of using Interactive Brooker. Is that a good option? Hi Frances, thanks for your comment. You can buy lots of ETFs through Interactive Brokers including the S&P 500. However, Interactive Brokers is a foreign broker which means they don't handle the TOB which is the Belgian stock transaction tax. Due to this, you have to figure out how much you pay - between 0.12% and 1.32% for every purchase and sale of your ETF/stock/bond.
