I love Arizona. A lot of people say the desert is ugly. But it's very beautiful. Hidden beauty. Sunsets are just breathtaking. The flowers in desert are pretty and every cactus has its unique shape with peculiar arm shapes lol. Too bad many people can't see past the dirt.

Architectural dreamscape turned retail failure. It is truly a spectacle, yet somewhat dated in appearance. I did enjoy watching the tour because in a way... I was simultaneously imagining a sort of time warp back to the 80's and 90's with moderate, well dressed patrons walking about the centre amongst an early evening sunset sky of red and blue.

"What happened here; we used to come here to eat in 10 years and now it's gone" ...
It amazes me why people wonder why some places close when they (and many others) haven't bothered to eat/shop at a place in several years Lol ..

That's a wonderful looking mall, kinda reminds me of something from a theme park. But it's a shame that malls go for utility over any personalty in their design.

Oh wow I've been to this mall before! I completely forgot about it. I stayed at the Boulders resort with my family during march break in 2013 when I was in high school (don't go there, super expensive and very shitty for the price, my bathroom had carpet in it lmao!) and we went to a Mexican restaurant there at the recommendation of the hotel, and it was super super busy actually! I remember how noisy it was lol. I was kind of shocked when the video started and I realized this was that mall we went to only five years ago. I'm pretty sure the pizza place was open then and I definitely remember the Ben & Jerry's that was there. So crazy that its dead now, I wonder how the resort is doing these days. The resort felt like it was in the middle of nowhere, I can't imagine too many people aside from resort guests would have been going to that mall.

IF you know any of the old tenants like I do, they will tell you that the Waldorf Astoria owners at the time chased everyone off with over priced leases. Plus they said they really needed a robotic tram or connection with the resort so people could come and go without waiting for their people to come get them, since they are on opposite sides of the Granite Mount.

Don’t care for the Hilton/Waldorf/Biltmore. Not run well. The Biltmore Casitas are very dated and while the regular rooms are nice, they’re nothing to rave about. They had tons of mosquitoes in October with no Citronella candles or staff at the pool. Never again. Hilton has done a good job with the hotel here. Rooms have been redone beautifully.

I live in the area and used to go to the salon featured here. It was called salon Mila. They closed that location about 2 years ago( the original, I believe) but still have 3 others in the area. It’s sad what happened to this mall, but a mall can’t exist on nearly identical galleries alone and that’s kind of all it was toward the end.

Man this made me sad, after watching this video, this made me realize about my mall near me that is about to die. The mall was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana call the Mall of Cortana.i had memories about that mall.back like in 2007 or 2008,I’ll always get candy apple,go to sears,RadioShack,Chick-fil-A and JC penny and always go to gamestop to see what’s new to play.but recently I went to that mall like a week ago to buy shoes but the mall is kinda dead. There was no more candy apple,Sears,JC Penny,RadioShack but they still had GameStop but GameStop is dying too.nowadays I go to the Mall of Louisiana, but the Cortana mall will be a special place for my heart ❤️

That mall looks so tranquil and beautiful... what happened to it? I would love to shop there and see what the performances were like. I really love the palm tree and cacti aesthetic. As someone who so far spent majority of their life in Northern Illinois, I'm fascinated with those plants as I've only seen palm trees once outside the internet when I went to Florida.
I love the designs of these outdoor malls you have out there in the South. We obviously can't have any of those were I live because of the brutal winters. In fact, we're finally starting to get out of the 20s as of this week as we had a nasty winter negative degrees and over a foot of snow. This is another reason why I love watching your videos because it takes me out of my cold area into a more temperate climate.

Kinda makes me wonder if the resort plans to repurpose that space into something else (perhaps meeting rooms or a conference center or something) or demolish it and expand a new building or more rooms or something else. I wonder if they are not renewing leases to get everyone out.

if you ever get out to Virginia you need to check out the Patrick Henry mall. Its super cool because its largely a pretty retro mall but they added on new wings and restaurants to it. its definitely not dead, but its still super retro. One of the anchors, a Dillards, has this big glass front to it that looks straight out of the 90's.

"What happened, I came here to eat 10 years ago?" That's an interesting quote, cause it answers its own question. Like when major places close down or go bankrupt. Radio Shack was the first one for me, then I stopped an though...oh ya I hadn't gone to buy anything from there for ages, then Sears, K-mart, so on. When you stop to think about it it makes sense.

We just stayed at the Boulders this past weekend and they golf carted us over here for dinner. Why didn’t you mention and film The Spotted Donkey restaurant? It and its Cantina predecessor have been here for many years. We’ve been up here quite a few times since the early 90s and have had lunches and dinner there. We stopped at the gallery where the artist was painting at the window. The boutique is fairly large, carrying higher end purses, clothes ($149 for a skirt) and many other things than golf shirts. They had quite a few last season purses and wallets on clearance. The ladies were very sweet. Yes, we became customers. The phone to the resort was working. The cantina remains popular although the resort has two other nice restaurants. This mall was mostly galleries when we hung out there. But many art pieces, including jewelry, could be affordable. Same with the boutiques. We usually went to the cantina but the restaurants were high end, not lasting too long. I wasn’t thrilled with the bakery. The workers were never too friendly and there weren’t a lot of choices. I seem to remember the ice cream place was once Cold Stone Creamery. I never saw this plaza as really bustling. It appears that Some of the areas act as overflow meeting rooms for the many conventions. As you mentioned, Carefree/Cave Creek is a bit of a drive. They even get snow. We plan on visiting again sometime soon. The kids haven’t been to the cantina for a long time. One note: we’ve stayed at the Princess and other nice places. I would highly recommend the Boulders, especially with summer rates. It’s now our favorite. They push the cantina for dinner but I would love to see El Pedregal really come back.

Years ago El Pedregal was one of the few things to do in Carefree. Plus it was very remote(relatively speaking), Scottsdale Road was a 2 lane highway north of Frank Lloyd Wright, it was just about all desert till you got there. The area has really been built up in the last 20 years. Which I'm sure is the reason for it's decline.
It's too bad you were not able to capture the old Rawhide, but that was a bit before your time(at least on youtube). There is still a number of old sites around Phoenix, it will take a bit of detective work, since a lot of them have been renovated.

So, my extended family moved from Scottsdale in 1994. I swear as a kid on one of our spring break visits, we went to this place instead of the Satisfied Frog because at that time it was somewhere new or trendy . . . but I remember it mostly being closed when we were there in the evening. My aunt used to describe Carefree just as you did, Max!

    • @diggingattycho7908
      @diggingattycho7908 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Keep in mind, there wasn't a freeway in north Scottsdale, nor did Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. exist. From the east valley it was a long trek to get there. From any part of town it was a long trek, but it was neat to go to the Boulders. The quickest way through Scottsdale was Hayden Rd. But it still took at least an hour to get up there.
Plus Carefree was the place where people with real money had homes. It was said Bob Hope had a house there, I can't verify that. But it was long said he did.

Pascal Schnyder I like that music too. I just didn't feel like it fit this place or the mood I was in while I was filming it. Because I had never been here before and I had so much access to it it felt very much like exploring in an old school JRPG.

I like me some vaporwave, but these old JRPG songs fit pretty well too in my opinion. Whenever I went to a mall as a kid, it was often to buy a new game, or at least ogle at some videogames. I particularly dig the new-agey CD music of games from the 90s. Remember when "multimedia" was the big tech buzzword of the time?

As a kid I thought this place was magical! But my dad would never take us back because he didn’t like taking us out so I forget the name and location. Cool I want to go before they completely close down. Reminds me of Sedona

This is such a cool space; it would be a great place for those unique boutiques that aren’t chain stores, the art galleries, a eclectic coffee shop, & restaurants. This looks like it had less chain stores. It’s a shame what’s happening....

That’s exactly what it was, boutiques and galleries. Didn’t have enough day to day needs to sell to attract repeat customers.

Great background music. Sad to see such a lovely kept mall so dead in an area where the affluent live in Arizona.

This place doesn't look like a mall. Hilton could easily expand the resort into the mall or turn it into apartments.

I truly wonder why they're not marketing this as office space. As fancy as it is it seems like a med spa or retail stockbroker would be interested.

Why did this mall die out? Not enough people in the area? Another larger mall open up nearby?

If you want to see another place that looks very similar go to Estrella Mountain Community College in Avondale it looks like it was inspired by this mall. I don’t think you can film though but it is gorgeous built in 1992 with recent modern additions everything super well-kept and nice. A nice blend of traditional hacienda Pueblo style architecture and modern eco industrial architecture.

Lived in Scottsdale since 98. Sunny place for shady people. The kind of person that can afford to live this far north doesn’t care much for public gatherings or retail shopping.. and they bail for 3-6 months at the first sign of our heat, while water and electric bills sky rocket. Ashler Hills just a mile or 2 south of this is a pretty dead strip mall too, but there’s a target and a Safeway holding it down. The snootiest of the snoots don’t care about the little man that was probably charged 3k/month in rent trying to slang gelato in here. Very fickle and superficial people, impossible to please let alone turn a profit on. Weird, but I doubt the ownership loses a wink of sleep over it. The location is worth it’s weight in gold

I'll agree I live in the Lone Mountain Area just south of this. I am from a multi-generation family of Arizonians and I cannot stand winter visitors myself. I SAY GO HOME! let this place revert back to the Real Desert; not someones opinion of what is should be. These people are obnoxious drive like there still is snow and ice on the roads. Most act rich until you meet people with real money and they don't act anything like these Snowbirds. They almost always say it would be nicer if it had trees and a lawn, maybe a lake or water feature too. I say that is what your Midwest Roots look like go back there if that is how you want to things to be. Leave the desert to the people that love it including the summer.
