    A food court with that fireplace and the wooden ceiling architecture just looks so inviting and comforting to me. Kind of reminds me of being in a log cabin on a cold winter night with a fire going to keep you warm...except with stores and empty buildings around you.

      Prescott as a whole had that kind of comfy homey feeling. Thanks for watching!

      This mall looks like the most comfortable mall to shop at. So warm and inviting, not like some of the white, clean cut malls that used to look like this where I am from. Where I live now, we have a population of about 47,000 and would love a mall with all of those stores that were in this mall, before it became dead. That way, we wouldn't have to travel an hour an a half out of town for decent shopping. Our big mall has slowly become dead since Sears went under. Even worse because of covid because 3 more stores have left and the food court isn't open.

    I live in the Prescott area and it's not a dead mall. They got someone new to own it and they put new stores in there and places to eat in the food court. It's a thriving mall.. They also do events there as well.

    Wow this video brought back so many memories. It’s crazy thinking about how I spent so much of my child/teenager time growing up in this mall, getting my nails done at that Charlie’s place with my mom, going to Barnes n noble to read books when it was still around, my first boyfriend working at what used to be the skate shop, working in the back storage room of journeys, begging my parents for an orange julius from the food court, etc. Even though it never really thrived, sometimes it /was/ busy but it always was a place I loved going. It’s sad to see it now, I haven’t been back in years.

    It's amazing they decided to build a mall ion this century. Most malls had been feeling the pressure from online shopping and Wal-Mart.

    • @pixoariz
      @pixoariz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It had been conceived in the 1980's and long delayed, partly due to the large number of citizens who thought it was a bad idea to remove the top of Bullwhacker Hill in order to situate it. I'd rather have the hill.

  • @brianwinkler8183
    @brianwinkler8183 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's kind of to be expected to have the indoor part of the complex to be nearly vacant, but the outdoor shopping/big box area isn't that occupied either. As of today, there are only 3 vendors in the food court. That said, you mentioned Prescott is only around 40,000 population, but if you factor in Prescott Valley (45k), Chino Valley (12k), Dewey Humbolt (5K), and Williamson Valley (5k), you have over 100,000 in the vicinity, which is enough to support a mall of this size, but obviously isn't working out that way. Flagstaff mall is doing well by comparison, but has slightly less population in the area.

  • @lava172

    Ah man I used to go to this mall all the time when I lived in Prescott, it sucks to see it like this. You were correct, the Hickory Farms did used to be Industrial Rides, then the store in the next shot used to be a pretty large Hallmark store. The Chai's Thai used to be a Villa Pizza and the Lebonita Pizza (which looks like it's on the way out too) used to be the Sonic where I went to every time I visited this place. Also weirdly enough the Verizon store in the background at 8:31 used to be a Wetzel's Pretzels of all things. Last time I was there the Barnes and Noble across from the Spencer's got turned into a mini golf course, was that still around?

    • @RetailArchaeology

  • @floridaredneck
    @floridaredneck ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the ceilings too! That's not a bad looking mall. It's too bad what happened to them, but we did it, ya know. We traded it for Amazon, Walmart and the like. We chose convenience and price for the experience of gathering together and enjoying the hunt. I worked in malls years ago. I started at Merry-Go-Round at minimum wage and years later was the manager of a jewelry store making about $100K per year. The workers there jump from one job to the next under the same roof and it's kinda convenient when you think about it. While I was tired of it over time, I did like seeing new people all the time and how cool it was to get just about anything you wanted for lunch. Of course if you needed anything, you just picked it up on your way out.
    For shoppers, it was an experience that could last half the day, unlike sitting around staring at a screen. for some, it was a group event. And if they had a movie theatre, it was an all-day affair. Not only that, but when you bought something, you brought it home with you, or if you wanted to, you could just wear it out of the store. But you can't entertain a generation when you don't belong to it. Old executives making old decisions about old malls isn't a good match, especially when the odds aren't in your favor. We could bring them back, but it would take innovative design with updated technology to make it work, and that's probably not going to happen. Great video as usual and very pleasant to listen to you.

    From a few of the comments below, it sounds like this mall is doing rather well today. I know Prescott (“press-kit”) is quite a hike from the valley, but it’d be nice to see an update sometime. As a kid in the 70’s I knew the old Ponderosa Plaza Mall (precursor to Gateway Mall; off Iron Springs Road) before it was even an enclosed mall! Sears and later JC Penney were there...Fond memories of snow flurries outside the windows of the ice cream shop and Hallmark (before those window-fronts became the mall-side entrances). Great times!

    When I lived there during college I was always incessantly reminded that the name of the town is pronounced Press-kit, even though as a non native 99.9999999% of America would pronounce it Press Scott. On topic, the town was always billed as one of the top retirement communities in America, not the best demographic to count on. Prescott has a large amount of addiction centers. I guess shopping is not on their minds. Average household income is only 35K so its no wonder the busiest place in town is Walmart. This mall was clearly built for a shopper that Prescott does not have in huge numbers

    Nice mall. Check back a few years in it's history and you'll find the likely reasons for it's struggle are rooted in false starts to get a commuter rail line from Phx to Tucson and eventually to Prescott (Mentioned in the AZ Rail Plan circa 2011). Not to mention misreading the demographics of Prescott which have always trended older. It's more a Home Depot and Walmart kind of town than Sears or Dillard's.
    That and Prescott has very strict land development regulations to curb the kind of sprawl you see in Phoenix and Tucson. It's a case of making a bad bet on what the state is going to do. After 2008 a lot of plans got shelved and this mall is likely a victim.

    Also noticed a Claire's store....another mall standard. One of those Wall St. Journal 'lists' claims the iconic ear piercing mecca is having its share of financial difficulty and may not survive another year. That would be too bad.

    At 15 years old this mall isn't very old. This mall is smaller than my local mall which also a single level and doing well. If Sears closes that would hurt this mall and I don't know what they would replace it with. A mall can't survive without the population to support it.

    BTW, whenever I think of Star Wars, I think of Bea Arthur.

    Thinking about it more. I'm curious what shape Flagstaff mall is in. Was built in 1979 and has a younger demographic due to the NAU. Yeah, it's a college town like Boulder but like Prescott also a tourist destination. With younger people turning away from traditional malls i'd expect Flagstaff mall to be less busy than it used to be.
