Dragon Ball Harmony Gold Dub REAL Intro and Credits

  • This is the actual opening to the Harmony Gold dub of the Blood Rubies movie, as well as the credits that played after the Mystical Adventure movie.
    The other "Harmony Gold" videos are really just the Japanese intro video spliced with an MP3 that someone made of the Harmony Gold song. You can see this is almost the same at the Latin American version that Harmony Gold did except for the slightly different credits.

    Funny how this opening used footage from the second Japanese opening, whereas Funimation's full dub never used such footage at any point.

    It got axed early on because it had a hard time finding an audience. Even Funimation when they went to do it axed it after about 13 or 14 episodes and skipped straight to Z. And even Z had a hard time finding an audience when it aired in syndication until Toonami picked it up and turned it into the phenonmenon it was in the States. And only after Z was a success did Dragon Ball get dubbed in full and remembered

      I know this comment is 9 years old, but just to clarify... Its been a MASSIVE misnomer for years that DBZ's original syndication in '96 was a flop, until Toonami picked it up. Nothing could be farther from the truth. DBZ was popular even before it came to Toonami, TV ratings from the time proves this. Old usnet posts from the time period prove this. And just think about, if DBZ really was such a big flop, why the HELL would Cartoon Network pick it up in the first place?

Someday I hope to do a remix, but the lyrics will be changed slightly (it'll no longer say "Zero is our hero", but "Goku is our hero" for obvious reasons).

  • @superrayman3
    @superrayman3 11 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    That's another good point, most of the voice work in this dub is really good for 1989, not only that but as you said HG kept the original music which isn't something many anime dubs could say back then, another thing people harp on is the censorship which I'm going to be honest and say that the censorship isn't that bad, sure it's there but it doesn't really hinder the experience that much, heck I'd even go so far as to say that HG's dub of movie 1 is actually better than Funimations's 1995 dub.

    • @BigHairyMarty314
      @BigHairyMarty314 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. The most notable example I can think of is when Master Roshi gives Bulma the Dragon Ball. The 1995 dub has him give her it without hesitation yet we clearly see her annoyed for some reason. The Harmony Gold dub retains his perverted nature as best it can and has the villains commenting on her foul mood.
      The shot of Roshi with a nosebleed saying she's not the friendliest person he's ever met gives off the impression that he tried his usual funny business off screen and got punched for it, making the scene in my opinion infinitely funnier than the uncut original.

  • @superrayman3
    @superrayman3 11 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    If you ever get the chance to see the dub I'd recommend it, when I first sat down to watch the dub, I honestly had low expectations since many anime's dubbed from that time were pretty laughable however when I got finished watching it I was really impressed, the voice work was pretty good for the most part, the censorship wasn't too extreme and the scripting was pretty faithful to the original source (it's not perfect but it's alot more faithful than what FUNimation did with those movies)

    You have got to remember, this was in 1989 and Anime was like unknown here in the US. It was 40 bucks to get a single dvd. Harmony Gold were trying to make Anime more viewable and understandable to kids in the US so they changed the names. But either way, from the Clips I have seen. This dub was really good and is kinda like the start from Blue Ocean dub. Actually, some people from this dub went to Funi or Blue Ocean, the Master Roshi in this is the one in Blue Ocean.

    Apparently people did care about what Harmony Gold did to DB back then because Harmony Gold's dub of DB was axed pretty early on, from what I've heard Harmony Gold only dubbed the first 5 episodes as well as the first and third movies (which they combined to make a feature film) before DB got scrapped, the sad thing is script wise the Harmony Gold dub was overall more faithful to the Japanese script and the wording and emotion sounds more natural compared to FUNimations dubs of these movies.

    I agree. I am an anime fan, and I think people are too whiny about dubbing. So what if they add in a joke, or change a line? It doesn't really matter, it's still the same show...

    • @BurnRoddy
      @BurnRoddy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm... No it isn't, have you seen it?
      This show was nothing like Dragon Ball same as Voltron was nothing like Beast King Go Lion +Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. Same as Battle of The Planets, Eagle Riders and G-Force were nothing like Science Ninja Team Gatchaman + 7Zark7 + 1Rover1. Same as with Robotech was nothing like Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Century Orguss, Fang of the Sun Dougram, Megazone 23 part 1 and Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross.
      But unlike G-Force or Robotech, this time around Harmony Gold din't have much to work for with this series because it didn't have much SCI-FI and the story was consistently linear and character focused they couldn't just throw other series and mix them to make a new somehwat cohesive story.
      So the best way they found out to create a new story was to completely scramble the episodes changing all the names and plots and throwing the unrelated OVA movies as sequential episodes making them cannon with the series. There's a good way to make a story and those are Voltron, Robotech and G-Force. This is NOT the way.
      The only redeeming quality I see from this dubbing is that the colors in the animation was much more polished, colorful and vibrant as opposed to the dry and kind of faded animation the original Dragon Ball series had.
      This was an extra treatment Harmony Gold always did to it's series to make them look more polished because they worked with 70's series and so that's how Zero And The Dragon got that but it was it.
      Everything else was is terrible, and don't get me started with Goku named Zero, Krillin named Bongo and Korin being called Whiskers the Wonder Cat.

    If they kept the translated lyrics to the original song, it will be a better dub.

      Ripped it myself from a VHS recording of a TV broadcast. Apologies for the single audio track. I was using a lousy VCR with only one audio out.

    A friend taped it when it was shown on broadcast TV, sometime around 1989-90. Some Dragonball fans are working on getting a legit version of this released from Harmony Gold's vault. I've heard a version is currently floating around somewhere. Try reading the older comments.

      While I'm inclined to agree, when you consider they were trying to adapt it to be an American Cartoon in the late '80s...it kinda fits the bill. :P

      Even for the 80s, every aspect of this dub must've been cheesy. But hey at least the intro doesn't sound as forced as Funimation's take on the opening. I don't see why Funi opted for a full on top-to-bottom cover of the song instead of voicing it over the existing karaoke track of the original Japanese version.
