Many Chinese people like to read articles and books, memorize their language learning flash cards, etc. when taking their subway commute trips in big cities. I guess this device and the other one from the same manufacturer featured on your channel a few days ago are for that niche.
The way he kept emphasising how cheap it was even stating it was so cheap it wasn’t worth protecting with a screen protector I was shocked to realise this item is $150+. Don’t get me wrong technology is not cheap but the way he was so dismissive of the price I expected it to be $50 item that is poorly made and doesn’t really do anything instead it doesn’t do anything of note but still has a decent enough price tag.
3:48 "The device is the price of a pack of tissues." Maybe he is referring to the price of the epaper panel itself which looks like it is around $5 USD.
??? So they took an MP3 player, that also handles flac, added a nice eINK screen and since it can read txt files it is an "ebook reader" but it doesn't do the very basic epub format which is I am sure an OPEN STANDARD. So what is this?
The screensaver clock and the functions are identical to budget generic mp3 players (probably same basic OS). But worst without forward button. It was a lost oportunity to mimic the monochrome iPods, many people miss they...
That thing reminds me of some of the knockoff mp4 players being sold around 15 years ago that can be a "multimedia" player that plays various formats from ebooks, audio files, and video files. You know, the kind of mp4 player products companies like Teclast used to churn out every few months. No way in heck would I use something that dinky as an ebook reader, eyestrain is the least of your problem with that.
That's not how eyes work, although the font rendering leaves a lot to be desired. Let's face it, they just didn't realise they were using e-paper instead of LCD.
Yeah This unit was making the rounds on Reddit etc, so we reached out to the company to send us a sample, and they really sold us on it as this be all and all of cheap e-reading and then in the end it was like.... It... It does nothing
This really appeals to me, im not sure how impressive 128gb expandable storage is, though. Id be very interested if i could fit an entire music library on one device
Maybe useful for a digital minimalist on the move and carrying a SICK Nokia candy bar phone. But price-wise…maybe I’d understand 99$. Maybe. But I’d still wait for a sale.
EBook format: TXT
So it is a music player and not really a reader, is it?

This would have killed in 2000’s😂

It is because this IS a $40 product, that is the price sold in Taobao/China.
Looks like I've found my ideal mp3 player.
looks more like a DAP with an e-ink display.

Your basic OS mp3 player has a calendar or calculator? That's very rare.

Omg the mp4 players!
Yes!

You are amazing, thanks for the reviews!
no epub, no mobi... no pdf? only txt 😞
Yeah

So dumb that they didn’t include a matte screen protector.
Just more gloss!
Very interesting form factor. Would have loved if it had been thought out better and been a reasonable price.
There is no backlight on this one right?

Your phone, laptop, or even a lot of mp3 players can fit all of that, or at least more than enough.
maybe it has a DAC for hifi headphone. I could be worth it if it could drive high power headphones
Well, they say that it sports pretty much everything that high Fidelity has to offer, but after our testing.. we highly doubt that
Good point!
Weird question where did u get your phone case it's so nice
It's great, but because it doesn't connect to Notes on Mac, it's just annoying to have one more app or paid service to take notes.
Just that unchangeable dot matrix font would have me throwing this in the trash immediately.
It's not arbitrary, you tried a 96khz file which they might not support for 44.1/48khz audio circuit
It's about $27 in Asia
Chinese marketing :)
Hifi mp3 mp4 mp6 player e-book reader can opener rice cooker
AHHAHAHA
No epub?? Then what it is?
I live in a 120 square foot apartment, so maybe it makes sense.
Oh I'm sorry.
One really reflective screen… sure it’s a ereader?
Yes
"Ebook reader"
Was pretty excited at the beginning of the video…..in theory it looks great, but in reality…Nah. Haha. That was a total 180.
There is no stage, it's just all the functions they made
😢 I was excited.
Too large and expensive for a audio player. E-ink is not needed for audioplayers since the screen is used very little.
"You have an SD slot there" 😃 "expandable up to 128" 😑
Bummer!
Seems like this DAP is fake; doesn't have good decoding and high fidelity.
reminds me of a quote from the godfather 3... handsome but useless 😁
Seems like a worthless device…especially for $150+.

$150??? In my country, it costs no more than $80.
An old real mp3 player (used) with rockbox on is way better than this, and for less than $70
Kinda disappointed to be honest. Especially with the sound quality.
what an e-waste...
