Replica Climax Logging Steam Locomotive: Locust Heights and Western

- In the hills of Clarksburg, West Virginia behind a quiet, residential community, a small, backyard railroad runs between the trees. The Locust Heights and Western Railroad is a privately owned and operated railroad that began in 1974 with the construction of a replica type-A vertical boiler Climax steam locomotive. This was one of the common early designs of logging railroad locomotives in North America. During the summer, the railroad gives public rides on most Wednesday evenings over their three quarter mile long loop of track. In the spring of 2018, I participated in a photography event that was put on as a fundraiser for the railroad. Come along as we watch the little Climax locomotive pulling recreated logging railroad trains through the forest on the Locust Heights and Western Railroad.

That adorable little thing is like something out of a storybook
yes indeed ❤ it
So cool how people think outside the box, in this case the boiler!
Indeed it is!
Small engine, extra loud whistle! Awesome!
It’s a pretty neat little locomotive and railroad!
@juan feito haven't gotten any motivation to upload, not much space in my storage, & I haven't gotten any ideas on something that won't turn out cringey & boring. Been in the spot in youtubing where you hit a roadblock
Atkataff the Alpha *wait aren't roy's friend*
@@JaeisJustJae yeah I am. Been friends since we met on ThunderKathryn's "animating The Search Part 2" livestream a few months ago
Atkataff the Alpha yeah ik
Absolute great work in rail productions
Thanks so much!
It may be small, but it’s got an excellent whistle.
what whistle is that? A 3 chime? (Sounds like it)
AJ WHAT R U DoIn HeRe
I believe it is a round top 3 chime
Yeah
Seems to me s 2 chime raised...(what am i saying)
That whistle and gear system makes it feel like she would fit in great at Cass Scenic!
Are we really in the year 2020? Feels like we just step back into 1800's
Id take the 1800s over the year 2020 anyday, lol
Trains weren’t built in 1800 they were built in 1867 if it were this
@@sd70aceproductions7 what we mean is the century of the 1800s
Soo nice replica, my children would be happy with this.
Nice
wow! i've never seen a steam locomotive like that before! it's very small but it has a good sense in power.
Omg i live not even 10 miles from the locust height and western, i go there all the time!!
Awesome!
I really want to go there but I'm not near
Beautiful little journey. Nice landscape and the early vehicles add a cool authenticity to it all.
Great video !
Excellent steam locomotive
and classic car !
Congratulations !
CoasterFan2105
Thanks so much!
Wow, unusual. Saw it for the first time.
Vertical boiler locomotives are very rare, especially ones that operate!
you made a channel that makes me happy every day
I liked this video and your channel I just miss your old intro
That is so awesome to hear, thank you so much! The old intro may come back at some point, you never know!
That's a funny looking climax locomotive it kind of looks like a tram
There is quite a resemblance, definitely!
@Ethan Schmid "WHOOSH!!!" *Hissed the old climax engine*
That train looks adorable
Very unique locomotive! It reminds me of Toby the tram from T&F
I know just add cowcatchers and side plates, remove it's whistle and paint it brown it would look just like Toby
I definitely can see the resemblance!
@Ethan Schmid Yes... *Sigh*
@Ethan Schmid no no it’s fine, I was just internally laughing without much felling
nice video & nice catch i like west virgina & i go there all the time
Thank you! I like it too!
Wait.. Clarksburg?? I've lived here for 3 years and didn't know that was here?!?!
Well, now you know!
That engine is so cute
Agreed!
Great videos!
Thank you!
Yes new video very good!
Thank you!
I love logging locos
I do too
That’s a cool locomotive. Almost tram-like, or GE Boxcab-like.
Dang It, I Really, Really Super Love That Steam Train! :-D
It’s a really neat train!
Interesting little railroad. And, love the old cars. I'm thinking Model A? Think I also saw an early pickup truck and one even looked like a flat bed truck. Thanks for this.
Yes, I think there was a Model A or two in there. Thanks!
Yes exiting
Nice film!
Thanks, Boris!
Interesting video! Super!
Thanks!
Delightful
I have never seen a video yet that I didn't like. Your videos are great. Really appreciate them especially during this pandemic. Keep up the great work!!!
that’s pretty cool to have something like that in your backyard. I wonder how the neighbors like the squeaks and whistle. The track could stand a little maintenance.
I like the whistle but nice video my friend ;)
Felix the RailFanner and Planespotter I love it too!
@@ROTE cool
Thanks, Felix!
Yk i met the owner of that green ford and i know the owners of this place, pretty nice people. And might i add when i saw he traveled here i was amazed, i didn’t know he traveled to clarksburg
Awesome
Thanks, Kev!
I LOVE this! Great Video bro!
On 10:02 that crossing sign looks pretty old like 70 years old!
Felix the RailFanner and Planespotter yep!
Can you please do a next video about the Duquesne Incline? The kind of relating to railroad that goes up and down located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
It probably won’t be the next video, but I would love to cover inclined railways at some point!
That is the most coolest choo choo train ever, wow
If I had this I'd always be on it.
For 1 little engine it's whitsle is a blast
It might be small but it is still really cool nice video coasterfan2105
Thank you, Christian!
It looks a lot like a steam tram. Like the old J70s.
Yes, it does!
This is look good mike!
Love this! Film is great and info so interesting. 🚂. Really liked the classic car and --hey! is that a caboose I see!? How sweet! 👍🏼 Sure miss seeing them at the “tail-end”.
Thanks, Jill! It is always nice to see the caboose on the end of the train.
Before I found out that this little guy was a Class A Climax locomotive, I thought he was a tram engine. I likely thought this because his boiler is surrounded pretty much entirely by his cab, and he’s also kind of boxy (no offense). He also has a whistle that is a bit too loud for a locomotive his size. :P It might work well on a traction engine, too, though it still kind of suits the locomotive, sounding very much what a small logging locomotive should sound like. Thanks for filming this loco, Mike! I love him. First Class A Climax I’ve seen in action. Very cool. :)

wooow! super!!!
Thanks!
I love coaster fan
I happen to live less than 1 mile or 2 miles I often hear the whistle in the distance from The Locust Heights and western railroad I live in Laurel Park West Virginia
That’s awesome!
I love close too @daniel radcliffe
cw 2288 There’s no E at the end of radcliff
@@danielradcliff7081 o sorry
cw 2288 That’s OK
Wow that is such a weird and cool locomotive! Also cool vid. Can you get to niles canyon for the october diesel and steam? I’ll be there! (I’m not that guy wanting to meet up just saying I’ll be there)
Thanks! I'm not sure, but I'll look into it!
Nice Video Mike
Thank you!
Wow. I've got hold of a 3D printed 009 vertical boiler engine kit and I was deciding what colour to paint it, which led me here. I wonder if any have been replicated in the uk...stunning, absolutely stunning set up you have.
Love it!
Very neat!
Nice
Thanks!
Love its design. Looks like a tram.
It’s so weird to think that this probably what the 1900s in America looked like. Especially since cameras back then were not exactly up to par with Cannon cameras.
Small engine lovely
some backyard rr.:) :) :) :) :).
Now wouldn’t that be something to have in your back yard, eh?
Are those tracks narrow gauge?
They sure look like they are!
Yup!
Like the video.
Ngl i did not know it was that hard to keep a steady bell
How is this locomotive a Climax? Didn't you talk about Climax locomotives in Train Talk?
There are three types of climax locomotives, A, B, & C. B's and C's are your traditional climax engines with the pistons mounted outside a long boiler. A's, like this one, could have either long boilers or vertical boilers with the cylinders mounted in the middle of the locomotive to drive the shaft of the locomotive, but the way the cylinders interact with the gears is the same as the other sorts of climax engines.
Thanks!
@@wessparkmon2395 The first Shay was built along this line but the engine and drive shaft was on the right side of the loco. The first loco E. Shay cobbled together was on a flat car. The early Shays, Climaxes, and Heislers were available with spool-type wheels for operating on logs or cut wood rails instead of metal rails.
Hey bro coster fan2015 go to Atwater and try to find some trai na or chase them there a rode between a water mer Send and Turlock
So they have to whistle a crossing sequence at every crossing?
Yes, it’s required
It’s more of the fact that it’s an insular Railroad with no public road crossings. Other larger narrow gauge operations like the Cumbres and Toltec are FRA regulated. But you are correct, this one is not. Probably just has to meet state boiler regulations.
First time in many years I've seen a vertical boiler in operation , I used to have certificates for all boilers ( up to 300 hp , Land only , and that didn't include Locomotive boilers ) , But qualified to Water tube , Firetube , Colonial , Economic , Oil and Gas , and Vertical Boilers , Very crucial water level on these and Bent Tube water Tube boilers ! All gone now replaced by computers and gas , ( no operator i person , in a control room watching a computer screen , Very Sad ) , so called modern techknowledgy ?
They are very rare, especially to see in operation.
It seems like yesterday that you uploaded the sounder commuter train video

Great video
What scale do you model in?
1:1
That locomotive almost looks like Toad the break down van from the show Thomas the Tank Engine.
What guage is it set to
I’m not sure what the actual dimensions are, but I think it’s smaller than 3 ft.
Reminds me of the coffee pot engine from thomas
@Ethan Schmid yes
the people who disliked are penn central fans :)
Hooooooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Toby ❤
Is this standard gauge?
What sort of fuel does it use?
I think scrap wood, but I will have to check on that.

That green truck was annoying
funhere1 why? It was cool seeing an old car
Literally, the guy who owns it is a nice man too!
Need to do more video on the steam engine's motor itself, is it a two speed tranny like the originals etc
