    Just to save anyone else from looking it up: At the end, when they say the guy who worked on the special effects should really be given a raise, they're talking about Colin Cunningham (as in, Colin from Canada) who is listed on IMDb as the lighting lead for Robocop 2014.

    In the original, OCP was indirectly responsible for Murphy's death. Bob Morton specifically states that the "best candidates" for the Robocop program have been transferred to more dangerous precincts. Murphy was one of those transfers. That made his conversion from man to machine that much more perverse, and the avarice that much more despicable. The new Robocop didn't need to exist.

    • @yeetimusprime3147
      @yeetimusprime3147 4 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Yeah, in the original it was indirectly intentional for Murphy to become Robocop. Meanwhile in this movie it's more of a convenient accident

      Likewise. That's the only piece of cinema in the whole thing. In the beginning he's like "Don't ever do that again." but by the end he's cool with it. And that is literally all I can tell you about the plot.

    • @thetopcats.9154

      That was genuinely unnerving the first time I saw it, but then when I saw it again I thought it was weird how easily NuRobocop's body comes apart. I mean I get that he's in a repair bay or whatever, but seriously, the guy flips like one switch and his entire body just immediately falls away like a dismantled toy exposing his super delicate organs. It made him seem really cheaply built, which would almost feel like satire if it was done intentionally. Like, OCP cheaped out on what was supposed to be their greatest product. Really though, that was probably done just because it looked cool.

    • @MrFlockentoast
      @MrFlockentoast 10 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      Well, you be surprised how most media outlets show or view hell-hole cities. The inner-cities are pretty clean and well taken care of by the city workers. It's just they think their audience is stupid and there for they need to make "dark" "edgy" for no apparent reason when it's not really like that at all. So I think Dark Knight gets it right for that fact of the matter. It's just dumb to have to make cities look like shit holes. Well, expect for that part in the Avengers when they shot on location in Cleveland Ohio with all the fire, smoke and debris, that shit was already there, that's why it was shot there.

    • @hensandwich
      @hensandwich 10 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      True. I think they did a slightly better job of that during Batman Begins (not much). The two scenes in that movie that depict a decay of the city for me was Bruce Wayne getting kicked out of that restaurant and seeing how disgusting that immediate area was and the ending of the film when the criminals run wild around the island. Other than that it seems there are no problems.

    There were some decent aspects of this movie, but I couldn't help but notice it was actually held down by the fact that it was trying to be a Robocop movie. This movie was at its best when it was doing its own politics, drones, human conscience thing but as soon they shoehorned in aspects of the original film like the police corruption plotline it got extremely tiresome. Nice video, guys.

      You've pretty much summed all the problems I had with this movie all up. If this movie stuck to it's guns it would have been great. There was clearly a vision the director and writer wanted, but you just know that there was some studio executive who was like, "This is a Robocop movie. You need to shoehorn this line in, and this plot, and this scene."

    ya know, the reason most modern films have been so uninteresting to me is because directors/studios have forgotten what fantasy means. back in the 80s (uh oh, nostalgia incoming), there was a lot of great stuff about a future that was so exaggerated, as to be completely foreign. i think nowadays, people have seen that the 80s vision of the future wasnt even close, and we've all kinda given up on the "flying cars" future. now everything is grounded too much in reality. nobody is wearing silly "future fashion". they mentioned how the news segments in the old Robocop were humorous satire, but the new ones are basically just references to actual news segments.
    theres certainly room in the industry for realistic approaches to fantastic settings (ie, the dark knight) but the sheer joy of a zany, weird future is all but gone. whens the last time a half decent cyberpunk movie happened? Dredd was good. anything else?....the matrix, /maybe/? back in like 2001? filmmakers need to stop being so restricted by things like a recognizable setting.....oh, and for the love of god, stop trying to resurrect classic movies because you arent willing to risk money on new ideas.

    Is it just me or am I the only one who didn't get the point of keeping the one human hand? Was that supposed to be a nod to the original where when Robocop was being built there was the brief verbal exchange about not keeping the arm? It just looked silly to me and I kept wondering why he still had one hand.
    Also, it was PAINFULLY obvious that the new suit was all single mold pieces of rubber. The original actually had the look, compartmentalization and texture of brushed metal.

    Equilibrium is probably a good example of a pitch black gun fight, illuminated only by the muzzle flashes. Plus it had the cool little cool down effect on the guns at the end.

    • @sciencemile
      @sciencemile 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It also had a very similar scene to The Matrix: Reloaded where the protagonists enter a room with multiple pillars that explode during a gunfight; I'm wondering if the two movies used the same set for that because it looked eerily similar.

    • @steverogers8163
      @steverogers8163 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, there may be others but if I had to compare the motivations of the themes of Equilibrium and V for Vendetta it's that they are like the Millenial's attempt at something like Total Recall; pure action with a faint attempt to invoke some thought.
      Though I prefer Total Recall I can see the distinction, and I could easily see Paul Verhoeven doing the other two well enough for me to think of them as similar masterpieces.

    I personally enjoyed the film a lot. I'm able to accept this 2014 reboot and still love the original. It's very obvious Sony is building a franchise. I suspect sequels have more potential, now that the origin story is out of the way. As for the PG-13 rating, a 7 year old kid gets blown apart in the first 10 minutes. Now, there's no gore, but, that was pretty gruesome.

    Part of what made the original Robocop interesting was how he didn't remember being Murphy for the first part of the movie, and it was sort of questionable whether or not he really was Murphy anymore. He was almost like a ghost. This new one is basically just... dude wakes up with superpowers. :/

  • @ayecapn
    @ayecapn 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I really liked it :\ They did a lot of subtle things to try and go opposite of the themes from the original. Keeping the right hand ("lose the hand") so he can shake hands with people as part of OmniCorp's marketing objectives to humanize him as a robot, making the doctor/scientist have a conscience as opposed to the blase 1987 scientists who don't really have an opinion about their work either way, etc. There's a lot of subtle things there I'm surprised more people don't talk about.

    Robocop 2014 was one long rollercoaster of Meh. It's not a bad movie, it's just very very underwhelming. It comes off more as a late 90s pilot episode for a new sci-fi series not a big budget movie.
    The story was all over the place. Robocop wakes up knowing who he is, then he is like a robot, then he re-programs himself somehow and he's back again. There's no real struggle between murphy and his robot self. He's not fighting his robotic self as the "illusion of free will" plot line goes out the window.
    Storylines were just meshed together. You had corrupt cops and bad guy who had no connection to the main storyline. In the original the henchmen who "killed" Murphy also worked for the main OCP bad guy who had Robocop's inventor killed. There were connections there that were lacking in the remake.
    Overall just a forgettable flick

      In the trailer when Murphy looks disbelievingly at his new body, you can tell he doesn't need to regain his humanity. In the original, Robocop wakes up and doesn't even acknowledge his robot body. At that point, he's full machine.
