Resurrecting the Salt Vampire

  • "What she needs to live is to eat lots of salt.
But that’s who she is. It’s not really her fault.
She'll appear to you as what you most desire.
That's why they call her the Salt of Vampire."
That's a poem by Darren Dingus.
Hi, today we are talking about Salt Vampire. In these dark times of The Acolyte thirst posts and 4th of July fireworks hurting my ears, we bring to you a kind a simple video. A pointless video really. A video that won't get the views of someone yelling into a microphone about a Star War, but to us it's important. We recently became the new owners of a dusty old reel of film from the original Star Trek series as well as the mold that was used to make the infamous Salt Vampire mask from the TOS episode "The Man Trap". Two items from the private collection of model maker Greg Jein. You see, when we get props we like to do fun things with them. Most times that ends up in us damaging them. But this time we decided to do something productive: Use the Salt Vampire head mold to recreate the original mask (and costume) as best we could with our limited skills. I think someone may have also done this with the mold. But I assure you, this was done with more love and much less skill.

Greg Jein was a master modelmaker. Among the things you've most likely heard of that he worked on, he built the mothership for Close Encounters, he built various ships and things for Star Wars, he built the ferris wheel that rolls off the pier in 1941 (actually, he did all the remarkable miniature work on that movie), he built the Lectroid ships for Buckaroo Banzai, and he was one of the team of designers and builders that created the Enterprise D for TNG. He was also an avid prop and memorabilia collector, and for a time owned one of the largest TOS prop collections in the world.
And Wah Chang, is probably someone who deserves more light shed on him in Star Trek history. For besides designing the salt vampire (as well as other TOS monsters like the Gorn, the Mugato and the Tribbles), he designed the phasers and communicators. Key pieces of Star Trek lore. Aside from being a member of the Projects Unlimited special effects group, that among other things, created the creatures and effects for movies like The Time Machine and shows like the original Outer Limits. Very, very interesting and talented men, the both of them.
Also, it's not the same actress in the costume, Mike.

A little bit on Wah Chang:
As you can just see at the bottom at 8:45, Chang worked on Disney's Bambi (1942) and Pinocchio (1940). One of the things he made was a posable, articulated deer model for the animators, seen at 8:31
In terms of Star Trek, Chang designed and created the original 'flip' communicator props. He also built the original and first Romulan Bird of Prey ship and the furry Tribbles aliens.
Chang also worked as designer on War of the Worlds (1953) and The Time Machine (1960), and made props for the original Planet of the Apes (1968)

The Man Trap was based on a short story by A.E. van Vogt, called Black Destroyer. They changed a couple of things for the episode; the creature in the story was a large panther-like beast with tentacles growing out of its front shoulders. It needed phosphorous rather than salt. Black Destroyer also inspired the Displacer Beast (a D&D monster) and the movie Alien. Black Destroyer was also reworked to be the first adventure in a space exploration novel called The Voyage of the Space Beagle, which was one of the two main inspirations for Star Trek (the other being Men, Martians and Machines).

Greg Jein worked on the Mothership in Close Encounters and then joined ILM. He worked on TNG, building the Dyson Sphere miniature and also built the classic USS Enterprise model for Deep Space 9’s Trials and Tribbleations.
His character appeared in the film 5-4-77 about an aspiring young filmmaker and his excitement about the impending release of Star Wars. He visits Spielberg’s offices and sees an Asian guy working on the iconic railroad crossing miniature from Close Encounters and I was like, oh, that’s supposed to be Greg Jein!

If anyone out there is planning on making masks like this, "Pro tip" (I'm not a pro); If you put a single layer of toilet paper on the first layer of latex when it's dried but still a bit tacky. Apply another layer of latex over the toilet paper, which will seal it. Repeat as needed for desired thickness. This will strengthen the latex. It also guards against latex rot - at least it has for me. I've restored my old "Evil Dead" Necronomicon edition DVDs using this technique. If you know, you know. That latex over the foam was smaller than a particle of Covid19.
