The force of gravity causes acceleration. The drops at the bottom are moving at a faster velocity because they've been falling for longer. Thus, they are more spread out by the time they reach the bottom and appear distorted
It took me 10 seconds to realize what I was even looking at. This is amazing. And I love that 2.5 minutes in, a couple of kids walk into the frame and completely lose their shit over how incredible this is.
from what I can see it releases water from tiny pipes behind the lights at the top at precise intervals. like pixels on a screen. that's why when it tells the time it all splashes at once with silence in between.
@spiegel its what they like there? China think we're crazy for eating cheese purely because its not in their normal food range there but that doesnt mean cheese is a weird ingredient... Japan has more positive input in the way they live their lives than the majority of countries in the world, joint with Scandinavia, Luxembourg, Andorra and Switzerland :)
@seventhapex right, however I think that if they shot the water out at terminal velocity the display would "refresh" too fast for the human eye to make sense of it. (unless the fountain were really tall, I suppose)
@Imsmoke855 The water gets cycled back via a pump. There might be a bit of extra water added to account for splashes and evaporation, but over the course of the day it would be no more than a few cups. The main thing that is being "wasted" is electricity, but then again there are a lot more wasteful uses of electricity than this to complain about. Besides, this one is cool :D
@hillbillygeek In regards to A; Terminal Velocity A free-falling object achieves its terminal velocity when the downward force of gravity (Fg) equals the upward force of drag (Fd). This causes the net force on the object to be zero, resulting in an acceleration of zero. Drag Coefficient: In fluid dynamics, the drag coefficient (commonly denoted as: cd, cx or cw) is a dimensionless quantity that is used to quantify the drag or resistance of an object in a fluid environment such as air or water.
@Imsmoke855 most things like that recycle the same water over and over. for instance, here in wichita falls texas, we have a man made waterfall--yet it literally uses no water other than what's in its reservoir.
@hillbillygeek Well... but everything being moved through an atmosphere will have a terminal velocity without continued propulsion. Water can only fall so fast before the resistance equals the gravitational force. If that weren't the case, you'd die every time you got caught out in the rain.
I sure hope this water is cycling through the fountain system, which it should be anyway, because otherwise, indeed, it might look great, but man would it be a waste of water... but, I gotta say I'd love to have one of those at my main station. I could just spend... minutes looking at it.
lol, you have to wait a minute to know the time again. That minute may be the most important minute of your life no matter how freakishly advanced and amazing that 1 minute display of water tricks is
it would be even more impressive if they used a stroboscope to create the illusion that the water is going upwards. But I guess you can't use that in a public area due to possible epileptic seizures...
little did all of you know that this kind of water screen art was invented by a Korean man. One whom decided to create it after receiving the idea from playing around with water and a straw....the water is also recycled, much like a regular water fountain, so those who are wondering how much damage it's invention is causing on our ever diminishing water supply... needn't be
The next step is a vertical scrolling videogame using water and light to project for example a car dodging the obstacles made by water. ;) It could be great imo.
it most likely gets filtered through and then gets pumped back up to the top and back out. im pretty sure they dont just let all that water run down the drain
You don't say? He does not mean that you can see the time every 4 minutes but that you just see the time only 3 times in a minute and after these 3 times you have to wait a whole minute to see what time it is again, With the 4 minutes he means the time people have to wait to see the time again. It is not 4 minutes but he just wants to show (with a exaggeration) how long you have to wait.
@jpsalsman Because is the universal language and I guess, nah, i know it's a lot easier write in english than write in japanese. Have you seen the letters from both styles in the title?
@ItsMeChrisG What are you talking about? Do you think they can transport water all the way to africa? This device uses a fixed amount of water it's not wasted in any way.
This is great except I've missed 3 trains because I can't stop watching!
I love it!
地元民だけど、これ、ついボーッと見ちゃうんだよな。
たまにバルブ馬鹿になって水漏れてるのも好き
Japan is so amazing. Awesome!!!
I agree that it is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen...
How amazing country.. I'd love to visit it.
This is just unbelievable
you can really see the vertical stretching of the shape as it approaches bottom, it helps visualize acceleration caused by gravity
i so wanna see a dragon being done :D fave in this vid though is the music one
It was great to see two children enjoying the fountain. Always awesome to have some happiness here and there :]
Quite a splash!

Japanese engineering at its finest.
That's brilliant! At first I thought it was just a constant flow of water with a projection on it, but seems like it's something much cooler.
Отлично демонстрирует ускорение свободного падения
I can't believe I wasted 4 minutes of my life for something this AWESOME!
Ничего особенного, но как завораживает. Не хватает разве что разноцветной подсветки...
最高!!後半出てくるこどもの 夢みたい! 映画見たい! 素敵な声!
We're never gonna beat those people...
+Elizabeth Perri Two Atomic bombs did.
nope, came right back and surpassed again
Greetings from Poland :)
Check out this one - Wordfall.eu
Wordfall.eu Bad link. The Blank screen. Make some better links dude :/
Daithí Ó Connmhaigh classless
wow.. amazing how light changes small details into something cooler..
Кто с хабра?
Love the sound of the crossing signs in the background.
i'd HATE that at the station :P
you haven't even got to work and already you need to pee!
It took me 10 seconds to realize what I was even looking at. This is amazing. And I love that 2.5 minutes in, a couple of kids walk into the frame and completely lose their shit over how incredible this is.
i can sit there all day long to watch it. Japan is just unbelievable
It's actually quite easy to do. It's like an ink printer. If the same thing can be done with ink or a laser, it can also be done with water.
Thank you for sharing this. It reminds me of my wonderful time in Osaka.
from what I can see it releases water from tiny pipes behind the lights at the top at precise intervals. like pixels on a screen.
that's why when it tells the time it all splashes at once with silence in between.
woooowwwww!!! this is amazing. the engineers. the creative minds. their imaginations. woww. thank you for sharing this
The one who made this is talented and awesome!
That's it, I'm moving to Japan. Gotta love any country that puts this sort of thought into its public infrastructure.
@spiegel its what they like there? China think we're crazy for eating cheese purely because its not in their normal food range there but that doesnt mean cheese is a weird ingredient...

this is amazing. Getting rid of the sounds would make this perfect!
They had something like this at Sensation this year! It was really cool.
It's just water droplets being released at different times from the top of the waterfall. Cool!

これはすごい。。
模様もセンスいい!
何これ~ 素敵すぎるぅ
そうだ!大阪駅へ行こう♪

Absolutely brilliant! Amazing Japan :)
That is the best water fountain I have ever seen!
Now in Japanese, courtesy of Google Translate:
それは私が今まで見た中で最高の水の噴水です!
This is great. Art with technology. Thanks for posting.
@Imsmoke855 most things like that recycle the same water over and over. for instance, here in wichita falls texas, we have a man made waterfall--yet it literally uses no water other than what's in its reservoir.
It's takes 4 minutes of my life, so wonderful !
I love this and the fact that this is for a public facility
You might not get the scope of how large it is until the kids appear, when they do, your interest in the display will increase a bit more.
子どもは無邪気で可愛いくて、見ているだけで微笑ましいね
This is cool. I wonder if when the water comes back down it is reused or it uses all that water.
Truly amazing!! One of a kind!!
The world needs more of these
@littlepumpkin42 I imagine it's a closed system since you really need to keep tight pressure controls for a display like that.
@hillbillygeek Well... but everything being moved through an atmosphere will have a terminal velocity without continued propulsion. Water can only fall so fast before the resistance equals the gravitational force. If that weren't the case, you'd die every time you got caught out in the rain.

I could watch this all day...
One of my housemates works for Rainfall Lab, the folks who build and program these waterfall dispays.
I think there was something like this in a Honda ad a few years ago.
Wonderful! Osaka City: this fountain needs music!
amazing, one thing missing tho: classical music going with it :D i love the adorable kids getting amused xD even tho thats how i reacted
that is just plain amazing..so sublime
I'd love to see multiple layers for a 3D effect.
lol, you have to wait a minute to know the time again. That minute may be the most important minute of your life no matter how freakishly advanced and amazing that 1 minute display of water tricks is
Looks awesome!
pretty awesome piece of functional art. :)
I write from Brazil, and speaks: Japan its fantastic.
Amazing! I imagine it works with the same principle as an ink printer?
Saw this last time I visited Osaka, amazing
Same technology as your inkjet printer, but bigger nozzles and ink replaced by water :) excellent!
It's absolutely fantastic!
I wonder if this thing can incorporate colored lights into it. That would be even cooler.
@battousai9439 Except that, you know, Zuse's machine was unknown to and had no influence on any computers developed independently in the US.
it would be even more impressive if they used a stroboscope to create the illusion that the water is going upwards.
But I guess you can't use that in a public area due to possible epileptic seizures...
Holy mother of god. I could watch this for days.
What went through my head:
"No!"
"How is that even happening?"
"That's impossible"
"What?"
"Magic!"
Japan, where even watching time fly is awesome.
「水時計」もそうだけど子供達の反応を見ているのも楽しい。
すごい
nice art :D
Wow. Physics + Programming + Ingenuity = EPIC WIN!
how come this amazing art work has dislikes???
@hillbillygeek Re: Point A, surely if you shot it out at the speed of it's terminal velocity, gravity could not accelerate it anymore?
how?
this is wonderful, genious
thanks for sharing
Unbelievably awesome!!!
That´s awesome!! I love it! :D

I would watch this all day if I had one in my room.
wow... thanks 9gag for bringing me here!!!
This is a Graphical Waterfall™ by Pevnick Design. I used to work for them.
The next step is a vertical scrolling videogame using water and light to project for example a car dodging the obstacles made by water. ;) It could be great imo.
it most likely gets filtered through and then gets pumped back up to the top and back out. im pretty sure they dont just let all that water run down the drain
Its amazing. Anyone knows what is the name of the company which created this?
@Jaiden11 I share the same feelings with you. I also hope the water is cycling instead of being wasted.
this is a great product, any suppliers for this in Singapore?
this tube is so amazing! I really want go there!
Please if theres a video creating that kind of masterpiece. materials and technology used. from mechanical, electrical and computer science.
i'm totally amazed that kind of masterpiece it should be installed here in our province. loved from the philippines
Very cool, now add RGB lights and add more effects.

@tubaconrad There's a fountain like this in Medellín, Colombia.... but I guess a Japanese put it there....
