Joe Dumars (33pts/MVP) vs. Lakers (1989 Finals, Game 2)

  • Joe Dumars's highest scoring game of his 1989 Finals MVP campaign. Isiah Thomas gets called for two fouls quite early in the game and Dumars takes on the task of scoring 17 points in about the first 16 minutes of the game, most of which Thomas sat out. He then finishes the half with 26 points by being the main reason for Detroit withholding the offensive push by the Lakers.
Joe D made some funky old-school bankers which drew the awe of announcers Dick Stockton and Hubie Brown. The three most creative of his 6 assists are also featured in the video. June 8, 1989.

Joe is in the NBA Hall of Fame. Two-way player and said about 3 words a year. Joe was/is a class act.

Isiah was the fire, and Joe was the ice. Always cool, calm, and collected no matter the situation. His shot was beautiful, his game was smooth, and his defense was all time great and one of the main reasons Detroit was known as being such a tough defensive team. Having Joe on your team was like having that security blanket when you were a kid, always dependable, always present and never let you down. My man belongs on the 75 top players of all time list

I didn't realize younger Joe D had that good and quick of a handle. I was born in '84 so sadly I don't have any detailed memories of the bad boys in 88,89,90. But I of course remember Joe D in the mid to late 90s as Grant Hill's only reliable teammate and by then his game had changed. But younger Joe D had a quick crossover and hesitation moves to get his opponent off balance. These clips are great to watch.

@@Jon.A.Scholt When he had improved his ball handling skills (If so )、that might have unlocked his shooting skills off 1 on 1 situation ,it means he is no longer just a good catch and shooter ,defense would be more difficult to guard him ,because he has a many ways to beat them so that might be a key to pushed him to be a hall of fame career

Joe Dumars, James Edwards, and "The Microwave" (Vinnie Johnson), were the key players responsible for the Pistons nailing down that 1989 NBA title. Man, did Dumars play his heart out in that series...

Dumar’s was one of the most fundamentally perfect nba players ever. Nothing flashy, just a master of the game. Something that went extinct in the NBA decades ago. He knew when to pass, he knew when to shoot to get to that line, because he knew he’d make those free throws, small game, all about the win. No flopping, just instinctual genius. Like watching an artist paint his masterpiece. Comparable to the MLB no longer playing small ball, it takes to much patience and practice.

I remember listening to AM 760 WJR radio in Detroit in the late 1990s and Mitch Albom said "Back when I was covering the Pistons Joe Dumars asked me if I could show him around the newspaper where I worked. He didn't want to see the writers, he wanted to see how the papers were physically made. I took him to the plant and showed him all the machines and he was fascinated by it all. He was not a normal athlete."
Flash forward a few years to Joe becoming a manager for the Pistons. The moment Joe changed their uniforms back to the classic look, I knew they were going to kick ass, and they did. Joe Dumars was a good player and a good dude.

Although Joe was never a superstar, he is a Basketbal Legend. A great shooting guard and a very good defender. Joe Dumar's style less and Vinie '' Microwave '' Johnson's more, reminds me of my countryman European Legend, shooting guard Nick '' The Gangster '' Gallis.

Those Pistons weren't "The Bad Boys". That was some media creation. What they were was a damn good team. They were a team in every sense. A sum is greater than its individual parts type of team. Whereas teams today are 2 superstars and a bunch of scrubs, that team was practically no superstars (unless you want to consider Isiah as one) and a bunch of good players. They could go practically 10 deep. Salley. Rodman. VJ and James Edwards. All coming off the bench. John Long was the 10th guy and he was older and experienced. Only Fennis Dembo and Michael Williams didn't play. 10 out of their 12 players were good. Now they have 17 players on the current roster and hardly any of them are good. That team was balanced and strong. Strong physically and mentally. They had been through difficulties together. They nearly beat the Lakers the year before and whether or not Magic was healthy for this series they still would have likely won. It was their time. And what did they get for that? A useless moniker that belittled their accomplishment.

      @plainsimple244 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah the Pistons should have had even more titles and kept their title-contending team together after 1990-91... health was the reason they lost in '91 but keeping that group together another 3-4 years, they could have had about 2 more titles just based upon chemistry and how they paced themselves while adding another player or two along the way... if Rodman, Salley, and Edwards could play for the 1995-96 Bulls then surely, the Pistons could have kept Edwards/Vinnie Johnson for 1991-92 and even Salley longer.

tonzjah it wasn’t People over hype the Physicality of the 80’s the 90’s and 00s were the most defensive eras in nba history go look at the scores of some of those games

As someone who's been an NBA fan most of my life, and have watched and observed games from 80's, 90's all the way up until today, there's just no comparison. The way the game was played back in the day was so much more physical that they had to eventually change the rules to make it less physical and allow for more scoring. You can't just take 1 game of highlights and make up your mind from there. Watch some of those Bulls-Pistons game from late 80's/early 90's. Bulls/knicks games from that era. Pacers/Knicks. Heat/Knicks. Pistons/Celtics etc.

    **MJ had no competition.**
    Yeah right...
Drexler was the only guard of the hand-check era with career totals of at least 20K points 6K reb 6K ast and 2K steals.
Old Reggie Miller and the Pacers eliminated AI and the 76ers.
Lots of MJ competition in their primes gave younger players of the softer league a run for their money when they were older in their mid 30s...

Look at all those soft fouls...see this is what i hate when people be thinking all games were hard bad fouls....in this case u can see how the fouls dumars was getting was just like todays era....of course ur mind will think ever foul was hard when u watch highlights of just hard fouls but is not reality when u watch the whole game like come on man be serious guys man
