Channel Master doubled the price on the 4228-HD in a few short years over what they used to cost. Maybe they realized they were losing market share by being greedy. I'm still using a pre 2009 4228 with a CPA-19 pre amp. Works great at my location.
I'm still running a 4221 from back in the 300-ohm days. Back around 2010 they were $59, but now $114 on amazon. Though the build quality is good, there are plans to build one yourself for a whole lot less. I was glad to have gotten mine for free.
I don't have any plans to. It's not fair that the ADTH tuner was given the green light while the HDHomerun and Zapperbox get shown the back door when it comes to DRM certification. ATSC 3.0 is anti consumer and I hope it flops.
@@AntennaMan Personally, it's my belief that somebody received a payout to leapfrog the ADTH tuner over the HDHR's and Zapperbox. That's the only explanation that makes sense in the way it was done.

TYLAR, would making this antenna and adding 2 more bow-ties on top of the four that this antenna comes from the factory increase the signal strength for problem areas ??? Thanks for the video too.
I was about to order one of these bi-directional antennas, since they fit my situation quite well. However, about two months ago two stations that I was always able to receive well in the past suddenly disappeared. I think that they deliberately changed antenna patterns and/or lowered power to cut off us folks on the fringe of their coverage area. I have seen both back as they had been on occasion (such as a special broadcast - usually sports). But most of the time, nothing. There is a third station that seems to have disappeared as well -but I never watched that one anyway. There are a couple more fringe stations that so far have not changed. However, I plan to hold off on further expenditures until the truth of what is happening comes out. David Johnson
The main channels i have trouble with receiving are ABC 13.1, 13.2, and 13.3 . Had lost them for many months ago, but started receiving them again a few days ago. Since most leaves have from the trees in my area recently, maybe that is why my reception of ABC is better now. To me, i feel their broadcast signal should be stronger.
This isn’t related to your antenna review, but I have always been interested in using a wireless connection from my attic antenna to tv’s throughout the rest of my house. Can you please test the Tablo TV 4th Gen wifi transmission performance? I would locate the Tablo TV 4th Gen unit in the attic with the antenna while using Roku boxes with the Tablo app. Thanks for your reviews.
I have 3 Televes DatBoss antennas. Nearly all of them I’ve had to redo the wave guides do to improper mounting. The VHF on those are VERY flimsy too. So I keep to their UHF series.
@@jurysdoyler The Directors that point in different directions are easy to mix up, and put upside down. I have 2 of the same model, and have, by mistake, put them on upside down. Meaning the smallest one is facing up toward the sky, and larger is facing toward the ground. It would be nice to have a label telling the consumer which is top, middle, and lower to aid in assembly.
@@XMguy All of that is spelled out on the manual (www.televes.com/downloadfile/DS10210001_001_135881.pdf/DS10210001_001_ES-EN_149884.pdf) and assembly video (th-cam.com/video/7jvhZBRu2Xc/w-d-xo.html)
How is each separate bay adjusted to different directions once mounted?? My single antenna is mounted to a pole 26' high. I simply spin the pole from ground level to point it for optimum reception. Even if roof or gable mounted. I can't imagine adjusting two units effectively. I must be missing something.🤔
Great question. When mounted, you'd have to loosen the bolts to adjust each array. If this isn't possible (like if an antenna is on a tall pole) then the bays can be set using a compass on the ground.
I just read a review of Ultra-Vizion Transparent Antenna and it totally looked like an antenna that can be reviewed here. I am curious how it would rate.
An antenna doesn't give half a rat's hiney about whether a TV station in your area is available in HD; that was just a marketing buzzword introduced in the late 1990s and became aggressively advertised by disreputable antenna manufacturers in the early 2000s as we were preparing for the switch to digital TV in 2009. No, all a modern TV antenna cares about, especially if it also advertises FM radio capability, is whether its VHF section is tuned for 54-108 and 174-216 MHz, and its UHF section is tuned for 470-608 MHz.
I have the other 8 bay you reviewed. I wonder if I got their automatic gain amplifier and filter if it would help any with my antenna? One station can cut out at times during certain weather conditions. Not sure if their amplifier would help or not. Or just need a better antenna for that direction
You have mentioned two good Televes antenna's Televes 108381, and Televes Corporation 149884 DAT BOSS MIX BIII/UHF LR. Could you compare which of these is better? I am 45 miles north of Chicago loop.
It depends on your distance from the signals you want. From what his testing shows, if you’re around 40-45 miles or less from the two places you want to get channels from, this antenna should be good. Any more than that for either or both markets, and then yeah, it would make more sense to set up a couple different directional antennas and hook them up to something like a Televes SmartKom combiner.
Tyler, do you know what are the overall dimensions of this antenna assembled are?...is it a large billboard that will catch the wind?...I looked at all the data sheets and specs and can't find the dimensions..if its not too big this will be perfect for my area in Florida
What is a fair price (in the deep south) to have an antenna and amplifier installed on a 40' tower ? Installation only. I have everything needed. And possibly someone to install it. But I don't know what would be considered too much, or too little.
If I attach this CIMPLE CO 3 GHz High Frequency Ground Block to the actual antenna, will it be enough to protect everything? Assuming I run the 10 wire to the Grounding rod.
Interested as to how this unit may function in a 3rd floor attic. I currently have a large "rooftop" antenna in there, positioned towards Boston from NH, but my own local VHF ABC affiliate will not come in at all. WMUR ABC Ch 9 (RF 9 as well) is 24 miles away in the "wrong" direction and is impossible to pick up.
Tyler thank you for all the good antenna reviews. Appreciate your knowledge. I have a question. Just purchased the 108381, planning to roof mount and run through attic into home and go into a Air TV converter box. To convert from over the air to IP. My local stations come from 2 separate towers. That's why I'm wanting to use this antenna to position toward each. Just wondering if you think this will work well with an Air TV? Estimating close to 75 ft of coax.

Just saw this, so sorry for the delayed reply. I'm a truck driver who uses a CB, and I've noticed large amounts of interference (loud static) from passing rigs that have aftermarket LED lightning. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure the RF noise comes from the LED drivers. Believe it or not, I can "hear" them coming from several truck lengths behind me, and the noise steadily increases as they approach then similarly fades after they pass. There's a good chance these aftermarket LEDs are the source of your interference, too.
I just tried to order from ness electronics and the price was good but they add $350 for shipping to Maryland & you can’t get this antenna on Amazon anymore - strange, right?
$350 for shipping?? Do you mean $35? As for it no longer being on Amazon, that's because Ness Electronics is the exclusive selling. They chose not to have it on Amazon to avoid paying 20-30% commission to Jeff Bezos.

@@AntennaMan @jC-kc4si The cable companies in Central Jersey, around Princeton / Trenton, used to carry both NYC and Philly channels. I assumed because it might be possible to reach both from there. I used to get Long Island NY PBS (WLIW) over the area from around Parsippany NJ.

Hey antenna man, you recently reviewed the televes smartkom preamplifier and stated it automatically adjusted for cross phasing along with automatic signal power adjustment. Does that mean you can use a different length of coax for 2 different antennas and still get a good signal from both?
I don't care. ATSC 3.0 is an anti consumer standard I hope flops. The better reception thing is smoke and mirrors. If it takes off, broadcasters will use the least robust PLP that will force a lot of people back to cable and satellite
They did improve the signal but I don't check the channel on antennas that aren't low VHF capable. This antenna, like most antennas, isn't low VHF capable which is fine for 99% of areas.
I added some comments to Tyler’s recent video about combining two antennas. I shared my experience and what I had to do to get a successful outcome with combining antennas pointed in opposite directions.
Yes, you need to plug in the power inserter that comes with the antenna/preamp. It does NOT go outside. It gets connected inside after the long cable that runs from the preamp outside to somewhere inside before a splitter or the TVs.
Assembly isn't too difficult, and there's two configurations. One has eight fixed bays, and one has four fixed bays and four movable bays. Also, once assembled it's too bulky & too easy to bend to facilitate shipping without expensive crating.
Hello sir..longtime subscriber.. I live in new york.. I hink like 8-9 miles away from manhattan. The antenna on my roof is pointed the wrong way. It's one of your traditional antenna's when you look at somebody's roof. If it did a 180 and had the front instead of the back facing the towers, would it really make a huge difference? I haven't checked in long time, but as far as local channels, I only get 2,4, and 9 in living room. If i go upstairs to bed room... then i get 2,4,7 and 9. Thanks ..keep videos coming
I bought one of these and am not impressed. I am running it alongside a Televes 149884 and a DB8e on an A-B-C switch. One of my marginal UHF signals comes in at a signal quality of 54 on my DVR with the DB8e, 52 on the Televes yagi, and is dropping out at 45 on this antenna. This antenna is 10 points lower on or missing other channels. I switched the Televes amp that came with this antenna with the passive combiner and separate amplifier on the DB8e. The weak signal stayed with the elements on this Televes antenna, so it's not an electronics issue. Years ago I tried a 91XG and that failed miserably as well. So not sure what to think of the whole "8 bay vs yagi" debate. I've now had one of each that is very good, and similar-appearing ones that were very bad.
I took the VHF elements off (I have a separate VHF antenna), and added some extra wires to fill in the widely spaced reflector. Then I replaced the Televes mixer with a DB8e combiner and Kitztech KT-200 amplifier. Now it's outperforming the other two antennas at the lower end of the band (channels 15 and 17).
Is there a way to eliminate the filtering to receive all the frequencies in all the UHF and 700 / 800 / 900 MHz bands ? Do they use a notch filter or something else to block the out of band frequencies ? I would like an antenna like this that has no filtering. If I can open up the preamp and remove the filters easily by jumping over them, that would work. Thanks
@@AntennaMan There was someone on here (thomasbland6428) looking for a way to pick up towers in 4 different directions. Could you combine 2 of these with a SmartKom and possibly pick up 4 different towers?

I believe 61-1 was CathcyTV (I already forget their old name) and 61-2 was (I believe) MOVIES network. Gone from ALL my TVs. 61-3 and up still come in. WTheck happened????????
I'm going to be in one of the only TV markets to have a Low VHF channel but no High VHF channels in a few months as our lone High VHF channel (WRDW) is slated to move to UHF (physical channel 27). WCES, a PBS affiliate, is the Low VHF channel at physical Channel 6. How would anyone go about hooking up a yagi because I would need for any installer to omit High VHF?
It’s less that you would need something that “omits” High VHF and more that you would need something that is specifically able to pick up Low VHF. Ideally a Yagi with very long(6’+) VHF elements.
Probably not because this particular preamp is also actively combining the signals for what is effectively two separate antennas. If it does have a passive fallback, it’s gonna be a pretty messy signal.

Which are always in the least convenient places 😢
Tylar, what are the VHF antenna rods length ?? Does this work better than the channel master brand Sir ??? Thank you for your time and help Sir. vf
I've noticed a price drop on "extremetenna 80." It doesn't have amplification, which many customers will need.
My next gen TV tuner from adth arrived yesterday hopefully you can test one out for us.
@@MikeBear1231 I believe it was given the green light because it has no DVR capabilities. It's as if the A3SA does not want to certify any network tuner or DVR
It is not fair that you (antennaman) do not plan to review the ADTH nextgen-tv tuner because it can not record tv shows at this time.
Just saw you on my WBRE/Wyou 28/22 here in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. Thanks for sharing cord-cutting info here in this area. I wish you could come to Meshoppen to help figuring out the antenna needs I need for my home.
TYLAR, would making this antenna and adding 2 more bow-ties on top of the four that this antenna comes from the factory increase the signal strength for problem areas ??? Thanks for the video too.
Your videos are very helpful, Thank You!
I was about to order one of these bi-directional antennas, since they fit my situation quite well. However, about two months ago two stations that I was always able to receive well in the past
suddenly disappeared.
You have the best videos for antennas.
I have 3 Televes DatBoss antennas. Nearly all of them I’ve had to redo the wave guides do to improper mounting. The VHF on those are VERY flimsy too. So I keep to their UHF series.
I'd like to learn more about "redo the wave guides do to improper mounting"
@@jurysdoyler The Directors that point in different directions are easy to mix up, and put upside down. I have 2 of the same model, and have, by mistake, put them on upside down. Meaning the smallest one is facing up toward the sky, and larger is facing toward the ground. It would be nice to have a label telling the consumer which is top, middle, and lower to aid in assembly.

Dual market...like if someone living in say Marshfield, MA can get the Boston and Providence stations?
Yes!
Did they post the instructional video? I’m having trouble finding it..
How is each separate bay adjusted to different directions once mounted??
My single antenna is mounted to a pole 26' high.
I simply spin the pole from ground level to point it for optimum reception.
Even if roof or gable mounted. I can't imagine adjusting two units effectively.
I must be missing
something.🤔
Great question. When mounted, you'd have to loosen the bolts to adjust each array. If this isn't possible (like if an antenna is on a tall pole) then the bays can be set using a compass on the ground.
I'm between two mountains in a valley ( landisburg pa ) . Any suggestions or hopeless. Thanks.
I just read a review of Ultra-Vizion Transparent Antenna and it totally looked like an antenna that can be reviewed here. I am curious how it would rate.
could you please do the next test after this ATSC 3.0 test. The Televes Combiner preamp next
So long as it's got HD then it's good enough for me!
😂
An antenna doesn't give half a rat's hiney about whether a TV station in your area is available in HD; that was just a marketing buzzword introduced in the late 1990s and became aggressively advertised by disreputable antenna manufacturers in the early 2000s as we were preparing for the switch to digital TV in 2009. No, all a modern TV antenna cares about, especially if it also advertises FM radio capability, is whether its VHF section is tuned for 54-108 and 174-216 MHz, and its UHF section is tuned for 470-608 MHz.
There is no such thing as a HD antenna
I have the other 8 bay you reviewed. I wonder if I got their automatic gain amplifier and filter if it would help any with my antenna? One station can cut out at times during certain weather conditions. Not sure if their amplifier would help or not. Or just need a better antenna for that direction
Why can't I find this on your store in Amazon. Do you not recommend it anymore- or is their a better/updated version
You have mentioned two good Televes antenna's Televes 108381, and Televes Corporation 149884 DAT BOSS MIX BIII/UHF LR. Could you compare which of these is better? I am 45 miles north of Chicago loop.
In this situation would it be better to buy two directional antennas and then use a combiner of some sort?
It depends on your distance from the signals you want. From what his testing shows, if you’re around 40-45 miles or less from the two places you want to get channels from, this antenna should be good. Any more than that for either or both markets, and then yeah, it would make more sense to set up a couple different directional antennas and hook them up to something like a Televes SmartKom combiner.
Tyler, do you know what are the overall dimensions of this antenna assembled are?...is it a large billboard that will catch the wind?...I looked at all the data sheets and specs and can't find the dimensions..if its not too big this will be perfect for my area in Florida
It's about the same size as the DB8E which is 37.40 x 23.50 x 4.00 inches
Do you have a top five antenna recommendation? Or best antenna? Thank you.
See video below: th-cam.com/video/QkroujtyJv0/w-d-xo.html
What do you think of the new Tablo TV
I don't know. I haven't had the chance to review it yet. Be patient. It takes a lot of time to make these videos.
The one thing I could never understand is why does the Juice from Antenna's Direct work so well but if there is an electric storm it burns out.
love the videos. I am in Antioch Il - right between Milwaukee and Chicago. Pointed at Chicago and get both cities, but weak on Milwaukee side and handful of Chicago not that great. will this get good signal from both cities at same time?
I have no way of knowing whether this antenna will pick up channels from both markets without running a reception report at your exact location which I charge a small fee to do. If you want me to take a closer look, you can sign up for my antenna recommendation service below. Otherwise, you are free to purchase and try the Televes 8 Bay. Just understand that reception is compromised a bit by pointing the bays in different directions. www.antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html

What is the gain Spec on it at channel 14 and channel 36?
how do I stop interference from diesel trucks passing my house?
Just saw this, so sorry for the delayed reply. I'm a truck driver who uses a CB, and I've noticed large amounts of interference (loud static) from passing rigs that have aftermarket LED lightning. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure the RF noise comes from the LED drivers. Believe it or not, I can "hear" them coming from several truck lengths behind me, and the noise steadily increases as they approach then similarly fades after they pass. There's a good chance these aftermarket LEDs are the source of your interference, too.
Gotta get a pre-amp that specifically filters out their radios. Anything recent from Televes should work.
What are the two circuit boards called that transfer the antenna to coax connectors
You’re probably talking about the baluns
I just tried to order from ness electronics and the price was good but they add $350 for shipping to Maryland & you can’t get this antenna on Amazon anymore - strange, right?
$350 for shipping?? Do you mean $35? As for it no longer being on Amazon, that's because Ness Electronics is the exclusive selling. They chose not to have it on Amazon to avoid paying 20-30% commission to Jeff Bezos.

as for antennas you try can you give away
any of those antennas you tried
or do you have to return them
love to own one of them
How well would this antenna work in NJ to pickup stations from both NYC and Philly?
It might work but keep in mind the antenna doesn't have low VHF elements for 6ABC
Depends where in NJ. Being close to Philly, I can't pick up any NY channels no matter where I aim different antennas including a Channel Master similar to this Televes. I can get the NJ PbS station and Delaware and Allentown, but can't get Wilkes Barre/ Scranton which is blocked by the Lehigh Tunnel mountain
Awesome antenna
Hi, can you advise me please, I live in a small camper van, 10" tv park up in out of the way locations, need a good small (ish) aeial and booster, can you help me, in the UK, many thinks keith
Hey antenna man, you recently reviewed the televes smartkom preamplifier and stated it automatically adjusted for cross phasing along with automatic signal power adjustment. Does that mean you can use a different length of coax for 2 different antennas and still get a good signal from both?
Whats your opinion on the NYC ATSC 3.0 filings?
I don't care. ATSC 3.0 is an anti consumer standard I hope flops. The better reception thing is smoke and mirrors. If it takes off, broadcasters will use the least robust PLP that will force a lot of people back to cable and satellite
I'm surprised you haven't picked up WPVI 6 because they said they fixed the weak signal problem. Or did they?
They did improve the signal but I don't check the channel on antennas that aren't low VHF capable. This antenna, like most antennas, isn't low VHF capable which is fine for 99% of areas.
ADTH NEXTGEN TV BOX in a future review?
do you have a video that explains how to use 2 separate antenna due to the fact that the broadcast towers are in almost opposing locations?
I added some comments to Tyler’s recent video about combining two antennas. I shared my experience and what I had to do to get a successful outcome with combining antennas pointed in opposite directions.
Does the pre amp feature mean that it requires electricity to function,
Do I need to plug it in ?
Yes, you need to plug in the power inserter that comes with the antenna/preamp. It does NOT go outside. It gets connected inside after the long cable that runs from the preamp outside to somewhere inside before a splitter or the TVs.
@@AntennaMan thanks
In the future do you think will be able to buy one that is already assembled?
Assembly isn't too difficult, and there's two configurations. One has eight fixed bays, and one has four fixed bays and four movable bays. Also, once assembled it's too bulky & too easy to bend to facilitate shipping without expensive crating.
Usually T is either gung ho! Or totally trash.. this is the 1st "tepid lukewarm " antenna review i can remember! Sez all ya need2 know folks!
Thanks
Antennas Direct DB8e
What happens with the signal when you rotate one of the panels 180 degrees?
It gets reduced there isn't as much gain. Whether it stays reliable depends on how strong or weak the signals in your area area.
@@AntennaMan There was someone on here (thomasbland6428) looking for a way to pick up towers in 4 different directions. Could you combine 2 of these with a SmartKom and possibly pick up 4 different towers?
How would this compare to the Channel Master 8 Bay antenna?
About the same but not as flexible in terms of pointing the arrays in different directions.
great info but can't see the comparisons being reliable because of all the variables from day to day
Comparisons are reliable as I test all antennas in a season on the same day and use a base antenna to make sure signal levels are consistent. See post below: th-cam.com/users/postUgkxs1ZLh_tA0xQxhfBa4R9H0XOE1eAEvon0

How does this antenna stack up against the Channel Master CM-4228HD?

If u ground the antenna, and buy a lightning surpressor($6) From a two way radio shop that will help. As well as plug the tv into a surge supressor.
@@anthonygallo3576 thank you 👍
Does this antenna work if power to preamp fails?
Probably not because this particular preamp is also actively combining the signals for what is effectively two separate antennas. If it does have a passive fallback, it’s gonna be a pretty messy signal.
