What makes these so good is the restraint and the taste. It doesn't scream or yell to make itself known. It simply flows with you and your surroundings.
It’s a river flowing grass roots growing type of sound, the kind of nice stuff always going on in the background type of sound, good things around the corner but you don’t know what things kinda sound. The heart feels a message it don’t need to be loud!
I resonate with that totally, I remember when I found this tape and started listening to it more thinking “there could be more, more bass and kicks, more tricks and whatnot” But really it don’t need that, thanks for putting my thoughts and feelings into words that are easy on the eyes.
Aye - took the words out my mouth; that's what makes these so artful. Sometimes restraint is just what's needed to let the jockey's concept shine through.
and the 'imperfect' mix. Much feeling is let in. I don't know if he was using EQ maybe just straight pitch and volume w samples, but damn they are alive. Just the kick on the first track for example.
For anime fans, You can clearly hear the influence J Dilla left on Nujabes in this tape. Nujabes would produce his album just 7 years later and his sampling and tempos from Samurai Champloo match the entire vibe of this album. You could have told me Nujabes produced this and put Samurai Champloo on the cover and it would have fit. Two legends both now gone but with music that will live forever.
I Salute all of you in the comments, I started following Jay Dee back in the 1999/2000; I was 19 at time. And I remember okay player message board and Renaissance Soul website was where I discovered new Dilla music, at the time he dropped stuff every other week. It was truly a fun time in my life. Reading all these comments, brings back memories from that era! Blessings to you for keeping the Genius of James Dewitt Yancey alive, through your enjoyment of his musical gift.
I was working at Tower Records in the Bay Area when I found him. I also grabbed Donuts by random because they had instrumentals. I was really into instrumental albums at the time. Really was a dope time for Hip Hop.
His music sounded like life. Like walking outside and the scenery speaking to your soul as people pass by and momentarily stare into your soul and proceed into their daily lives.

I love the differences you can hear from the retail versions of these songs. 1nce again sounds more jazzy, like it could be on the midnight marauders album. stakes is high sounds way rougher, more grimy.
The flute bossa nova sample at 7:50 is "Copacabana" by Herbie Mann. It's the same sample used on the track "The Self Science" by the rap group Self Scientific.
I still can't believe i'm finallt listening to the complete "rio off the roof" instrumental. The one i've been listening to was missing a few bars and it's just not the same... merry christmas yall!!!

Hard to put into words the journey this takes one through. Understated and calming; No need to go through and sing its praise but it's just straight raw, impeccable flow, outstanding editing, and incredibly personal to listen to. What's astounding is just how profound a track can sound just changing the pitch and the speed from its final cut; Rip Off the Roof immediately comes to mind - this version is just magical. Dilla truly knew how to make samples come alive. Hope to one day see the whole body of his work up to continue to explore to its entirety. But until then I (and those of us listening to this one the regular) will have you and others that share these rare beats to thank for the incredible work you guys do for the scene. Much love.

Really great stuff. 1998 has been my favorite for a while, but ‘96 really gives it a run for its money. A lot of people probably prefer this one.
98 was such a cleaner sound and i loved it too but he was always able to capture a vibe.
