Fuck Andrew Carnegie!
His unwillingness to provide his workers with a reasonable wage and humane working conditions in his steel mills lead to the Homestead Strikes in 1892, a piece of Pittsburgh history that the Heinz History Center isn't afraid to document. His attempts to placate the communities with charitable gifts can never atone for his crimes.

I’m originally from Pittsburgh; moved to Portland, Oregon in 1997. I saw this video while I was looking for video about Pittsburgh to comfort me while undergoing a bout of homesickness. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and seeing the changes in the museum. They used to have just one T-Rex and it was standing up. I believe there are new thoughts on how upright they were. I had a couple temporary secretary jobs at the Carnegie Museum and walked through the Hall of Birds, which was on the first floor and dimly lit, everyday on my way to the cafeteria. Kinda creepy. I always thought the Dodo was real. You taught me something new! Riding the inclines never gets old. My favorite museum in Pittsburgh is the Andy Warhol Museum. I’m an artist and art geek with Warhol being my favorite artist. Thanks for the awesome trip down memory lane ❤

The Carnegie museum is completely worth it just to witness the amazing workmanship the actual buildingTHAT is a real tour workmanship and craftsmanship are completely disappearing in the era when it was built a truly magnificent building

I love all this old Victorian stuff. Those cable cars are functional history in motion, glorious. And I have a big soft spot for fusty old 'stuffed animal' natural history displays... sure, the modern ones are more ethical and all shiny and slick, but I grew up with this sort, and there's a lot of nostalgia there for me. I'd like to say finding a real skeleton inside the wax figure was unusual but for that period it really wasn't. Artificial replicas weren't available and it was easier to sculpt over rhe real thing instead of trying to build it from scratch. Remember even in the 60s, Disneyland had to source real skeletons for Pirates, because the imitation ones available weren't convincing. (Almost all have been replaced by now, obviously).
If I was by myself I would read and watch everything but with a small kid I realized it’s way less stressing if I just pass straight every piece of written info. Knowing that I can look for it online later is comforting.
LOL....i pick and choose what i read...can always go back and see it later. My other half is like you...He MUST stop and read everything ....EVERYTHING... . I've found visiting places with placards much more enjoyable if i just tell him i will meet him at a speific place later....LOL ...it would take weeks to see all there is to offer at the Carnegie, its huge and he didnt even touch on the Art or Library sections(all connected )..if get a chance go check it out

Wikipedia suggests that there's only six other funicular railways in the USA, how about visiting the others? A funicular railway being where there is a train on either end of the cable acting as counterbalances and using the weight of one to pull the other up

I went on some dates with a girl who's mom supposedly worked on the curating team at carnegie in the 70s-80s and claimed that Egyptian artifacts were too expensive at the time, so they faked it and apparently personally made over 1/3 of the small items that are on display...
She was a lil crazy but had strong conviction about it.
Also, there is a kindly older gentleman who works the T-rex area that often carries actual fossils you can hold and he is a wealth of dino info. I think I saw him for a flash in the video in a blue sweater. Anyone who seeks him out for a story wont be disappointed.
I think more of these “artifacts” are by and large fake or replicas. It’s just more believable than the idea somehow all of these things were salvaged and kept by people over hundreds and hundreds of years. Sure some things are probably legit but that girl might have been tipping you off to some museum secrets 😉

My Dad was born in Pittsburgh, and even though he moved to Chicago when he was five, always had a soft spot for it. I also have a soft spot for Pennsylvania in general, due to going to a summer camp in Wayne county, up in the northeast. Best five summers of my life.
Same for me. I was born in Kittanning, PA which is just 30 minutes Northeast of Pittsburgh but we moved down to North Carolina when I was only a few weeks old. However, we went up there all the time to visit family.
I'm sure it goes without saying, but viewing the fireworks display on July 4th from Mt. Washington is a must. It's insanity. Off-note: I actually almost got ran over by an ambulance in the Oakland area right in front of the art museum. Kind of poetic.
Insider tip... the hills of south side are almost as good as the overlook and not packed like sardines. I used to watch from a friend's on Arlington and it was near as good and waaaaay less stress. Even when I was at the top of 18th on the 2nd floor was freaky good
@@Reyd_01 The South Side Slopes are nice for the view, I agree. I was friends with the tenants in the the flats, so they let me watch from the top of the building. You know what they say: South Side is the best side.
@@Raees-Divitiae not so much anymore though 😔 I spent 2yrs on the flats and 10yrs on 18th st slopes and it just got too bad from Mt Oliver, I got out to Brentwood/Overbrook and love it out here. July 4th is the only reason to venture back there! Cept maybe Fatheads 😄

After my car got broken into 3x and somebody tried to rape a girl on my porch at 3 am, diffused by my dog and a shotgun, I said it's time to go lol

I work within archival and libraries and you deal with sensitive topics so well. Even way back on the Healthcare musuem and dealing with people with that history of neurodivergent issues. It was done so appropriately.
I usually have about a 2 min window watching a video before I move on when on a display. If I decide to commit to a video with seating I'll most often stay for most of it.
Did anyone there tell you how often drunk ppl try to climb the incline after closing? They never make it the whole way lol

Victoria, BC, Canada has a miniature museum. Since you love dioramas, it's a large place with large dioramas using miniatures. They have fairy tales, scifi, military, circuses, and many more things

My dad lives in Pittsburgh & I used to adore this museum. I want to come back after seeing all these new updates since when I was younger! Such a cool walk through video, comedy, dinosaurs, taxidermy, chefs kiss to the best videos.
Wow the people who had all those things to say about that first display really had to wear the tin hat and hit the crack pipe hard didnt they? The human head was understandable though.

When ur back on the west coast visit the rosacrution museum in San jose, Egyptian themed, real sarcophagus to see
try the bayernhoff museum next time you’re in town it’s amazing and not very well known
you got really lucky in that was a sunny day. it’s literally cloudy every day in the colder months, that’s why we have so many bars.
Growing up here in Pittsburgh,a group of our friends would visit the museum and have the “Run” of the place. Never getting into trouble. During the early 70s around 1972. I have a vivid memory of college students sitting around and sketching the Diorama of the camel rider on a weekend visit. Great childhood memories, not negatively impacted by the (ART) of the taxidermy of a world class diorama.
There are a lot of French words in that area such as Duquesne. Back in the mid 1700s it was a battleground between Britain and France in the French and Indian War. In fact not far from there is the site where George Washington, only in his mid 20s basically started a global war.
Thank you for this awesome tour Jacob. I absolutely love museums and you have shared so many amazing places with us this one was truly special. I love the art of the diorama display. The diorama was my favorite part of school and I’ve loved displays of any kind ever since. Safe travels ☺️😎

This brings back so many memories as I watch this. My dad grew up in that area and, whenever we visited his mom, we HAD to go for a ride on the incline, see the museum, etc. I miss those days... Thank you so much for this video! (and you definitely need to go back to Mt. Washington to see the fireworks on the 4th--they can't be beat, imo!)

Hi Jacob, happy you're safely back on the road again. The stadium you're referring to at the 6:50 mark is Heinz Field. In museums, i love the full experience which is why i watch the videos that play in exhibits.

This video makes me miss the National Museum of Scotland where they have the taxidermy remains of Dolly the Sheep along with tons of other amazing exhibits.
I loved that museum when I visited in 2007. Pretty sure I went back in 2009 as well. Loved it.

They should leave the piece as is. I think they did great by not putting it away and hiding it. Instead talking about the history of it. I still don’t think the skull should be removed. Get rid of the entire piece if that’s the case. It wouldn’t be the same piece if changed. What a great museum overall.

Anyway, there's one of those incline things near me, except they call it a cliff lift, or cliff tramway. Been on it only once in my life, I think.

The Natural History Museum in London is the best one I’ve ever visited and I’m absolutely obsessed with them! Highly recommend!! But go during the weekdays because it was also the most crowded museum I’ve ever been to in my life. 😂 Worth it though!
