There is something supremely uncanny about taxidermy: the hyperrealism of its representation makes the inanimate seem animate, and - for some - uncomfortably real. That sense of eerie realness is the exact quality that makes for a superior piece of taxidermy - the kind that wins awards at the World Taxidermy Championships. Nicole Triche’s short documentary provides a balanced look at an uncommon profession, addressing the relationship between taxidermists, animals and nature, and the practitioners’ struggles to be taken seriously as artists.

I love the people that dont just have the animal standing or laying there but actually put them in motion just frozen, the obvious example is the moose and the wolves. But the lion that looks like he's stalking something and the wolf with the adorable goofy look on his face really drew me in.

Litman and since a person liking my comment brought me back to This, a taxidermy sculpture was a finalist in one of Australia’s biggest sculpture competitions, by Julia deville. So officially art. Also anyone can do art.. anything you create can be labeled art

It’s probably because he’s unliked. If you really pay attention to what he says, he’s an antisocial arrogant asshole. He openly shits on the establishment. He’s absolutely great at what he does. But ultimately it boils down to being a personality contest like anything else.

Bro i thought they just stuffed the skin of the dead animal, i never knew they airbrushed detail into it
There's so much work that goes into it, they don't just stuff it, there's a fully formed anatomically accurate "mannequin" or foam form that someone sculpted. They clay work to build up definition, muscle and facial features, glass eyes, sewing, skinning, tanning, glueing, painting, etc. It is undeniably laborious and lengthy but the process and end result is amazing
If you just stuffed the skin of a dead animal with fluff without a sculpture, it’d be a pillow. We aren’t just skin and fluff with mush, animals have bones, muscle and organs that give them their outer shape.
yeah! So, if you just stuffed the skin of an animal it would look REALLY weird, like SCARY weird. You can google images of bad taxidermy and see how freaky it is.
It's one of the reasons taxidermy is not really a practiced preservation option for humans. No matter how good the taxidermist, they aren't quite able to make stuffed humans look like normal humans to the human eye, they always look off and disturbing and in the "uncanny valley".

They often only contain a real skull, with a sculpted mould or frame inside. Recolouring the fur/skin is continual as light quickly fades colours.
The mouse being attacked by the wolves is one of the most incredible pieces of art I've ever seen ! So much motion and every animal totally frozen in time ! So Exhilarating !

This will probably be buried, but I just wanted to say that am currently 18 and I have been working at a taxidermy shop for the last 2 years. This comment section made me smile. The amount of people who shame me or yell at me and tell me I am a horrible person. You guys have made me feel so proud! I work with a few people who have won the world taxidermy championships and I couldn't feel more blessed. Getting to work with these amazing animals, and learning about this art has been more than I have ever wanted it to be. If anyone sees this and has any questions I would love to answer them! Whether they are technical or curiosity questions, ask away!

@@gabrielamendoza3976 just a passion for animals and a willingness to learn. I’m probably one of the least artistic people in the world so it hasn’t been easy and there has been some screaming at dead animals (true story lol) but if you get a good teacher and do your best to be patient, it’s achievable
Do you always use real animals skins or do you sometimes use fake ones? Cuz I’d love a wolf head but I’d not like a real wolf skin lol
@@undeadwerewolves9463 we do reproductions of animals but in order to do that we usually use other animals skin. For example, we had a sloth missing a lot of hair so we used similar colored and textured raccoon skin to patch it. I’m not sure if we have ever done a totally reproduction mount, but I feel like it would be possible. Although if your reservations about a real hide are because wolves are endangered I would tell you that here we actually have an invasive species of wolf that is breeding out of control and attacking people and livestock. So game wardens have been killing them to help reduce the population because they don’t have any natural predators. Then the game wardens sell the hides to us to be used later. Not sure if that helps at all but I hope it does!
Taxidermy is really cool and I have never really seen it as art until now.... but how do you stay ethical being a taxidermist? I don't feel it's okay to taxidermy wildlife that is an endangered species(like killing endangered species just to taxidermy them). I would like to believe that most taxidermists do things ethically, and get their hides as cruelty-free as possible
I think what I like the most about taxidermy (as a wildlife photographer) is you’re literally preserving a moment in time forever, in an extremely realistic way that can’t be recreated by just sculpture, drawings or photography alone. You can get closer to those animals than you can with the live wild ones and it gives a real sense of appreciation of the animal in its full raw beauty.

It's kind of sad that Museums are going away from Taxidermy. I'd rather have a real thing than a CGI rendering or hologram.

I've seen real sized mamooths made by sculptors and they look as real as this animals. It doenst need to be CGI. Go check quagga sculpture for example or bluerhinostudio.
You dont need the actual animal skin to recreate an animal.
@@frost3dart especially since so much of those old taxidermies of extinct animals look so horrible and unrealistic, not like these. Sad to see so many of the last of their species looked like they were sewn together by a middle schooler. I have nothing against doing it with animals that are already dead, or are a very common species. But I definitely don’t approve rare or endangered animals to be killed for this purpose, so in those cases fake sculptures or holograms would be preferable.
@@yeetngreet148 i recomend u watching a bit of blue rhino studio or those business i talk about, taxidermia usually looks weird, you have to be suuper good to like do a good thing with it, hiperrealistic sculpted animals usually look accurate if u have the information, the infraestructure and the skill for it.
The wolf hunting diorama should have won, its amazing, tells story, its explosive and shows the bravery of the hunter and the hunted
The eccentric guy with long hair is the actual artist here-- he lives and breathes this lifestyle and is obsessed with it the way a lot of famous artists can be. It's why his work is so complex, and why he judges on composition and artistic merit as much as accuracy of the subject matter. He wants the pieces to evoke emotion as well as be a realistic representation of an animal.
to be completely honest, many famous and respected artists use (or used) far worse things to produce their art than clean animal skin. It's a shame it's not seen as an art because pieces shown in this vid are incredible.
real talent would be making something lifelike and convincingly real without needing to use the body of a dead animal
Right and one thing I thought of while watching this was that the animals themselves were never perfect. A perfect mount can look great of course, but there’s going to be something missing because the animals weren’t that same definition of reflect when they were alive.

You're not alone, there was a crocodile on open display in a local museum where I grew up and as kids we used to put our hands and heads inside its open mouth. It WAS a little unnerving, I can still remember. :)
I have always been paranoid of taxidermy tbh, especially the heads, e s p e c i a l l y if they're deer or moose. Lol, I don't even know why I'm still scared.

The wolves hunting the moose though- that was incredibly well done. Gravity defying yet believable, and the animals weren't bent in any awkward way.
I’m a 22 yo female college student and I love the idea of taxidermy (death by natural causes of course though because I’m a softy) and my family thinks I’m some kind of serial killer lol. Just bought a real honey bee in resin on a ring today and I have a baby shark that’s a wet specimen that I got as a kid in Florida. That’s all I own but baby ducklings tug at my heartstrings and I wanna own one so bad but my family thinks I’m insane lol
I have a baby mouse that I found outside in my freezer. Few weeks ago I got a small bat. In a month I’m going to get a two headed bat. Then I would like to get a duckling. I know it makes people uncomfortable but to someone else it’s amazing.

im 14 years old and my mom supports my love for oddities. She is letting me try my first taxidermy i am going to get a frozen feeder mouse from the pet store and try my best to mount it.

The fact that this video has 7 dislikes amazes me. I don’t see what there is to dislike. This is art. This is the chase to replicate the most beautiful things on this planet to the best of our ability. Taxidermy is the art of preserving the most amazing creatures. I can’t fathom a more beautiful thing.
I mean, they could have because of the hunting. This is great taxidermy, absolutely beautiful, but I know even if a taxidermist or supporter of taxidermy clicks on this, they may not support the hunting of the animals too
@@sebnemnisanci If you are hunting for food and you are able to shoot a large whitetail buck per say, then you can skin it and honor it by putting it up on your wall.

I live in Wisconsin and have been going to the Milwaukee public museum for as long as I can remember. Seeing Samson on the second floor displayed by the other taxidermied animals was always one of my favorite parts of the visit because I sadly was never able to see him alive. Watching this is such a cool experience, getting to know the person behind this source of wonder I’m greeted with every time I go.
I'm from Milwaukee, I used to go see Samson when I was a kid, its weird to see her likeness of him. Uncanny.

I'm too young to have seen him in person, but I remember seeing the recreation of him every time I went to the zoo.
I think the view on taxidermy solely depends on if, for one, the bodies are ethnically resourced-and two, putting mass amounts of effort into the piece. NOT allowing it to look nasty, or...mummified. And using them as trophies is not...good. Don’t kill to make art. But, taking something that’s already dead, and giving it a dignified final look is definitely a good sense of art.
You have to understand that we do not kill for art. We kill to feed our families and getting it mounted is just another step to using every part of the animal to the fullest. Hunting in ways is a more ethical way of getting food then getting it from the store.
@@caseholmes3385 Nono that's fine. I was saying that, there are people out there who kill just TO turn an animal into art, and that's not ok.
If you kill something to feed your family and lets (in generic terms) say you take the deer head from the one you killed, and mount it on your wall, then that's alright.
Now, if you were to design it in a way where it's making a stupid face or, as ive seen, licking a bullet wound then well-that in itself is just messed up.
I dont shame people for what they decide to do, dont worry. That's why I started off my comment with "I think" because it's my personal belief and not something I think everyone should believe in. I guess, 'you do you, but do you respectfully" is the fastest way for me to summarize it.
@@okamigekido i mean elephant hunting is probably the best example of increasing the population, by killing an unfertile old bull that makes life for younger bulls a living hell and most of the time death to the young bulls, the young bulls won't have a chance to mate. and the old bulls can't mate and they just keep killing young bulls. the meat has to go to locals and city's if not, you're classified as a poacher and would be fined or sent to jail.

@@caseholmes3385 While ethical hunting is very important and ethical taxidermy is awesome, it's not that simple. I can safely say as someone who's family relies on hunting for food and with a history of tax and conservation there are sadly some people who kill for fun and they need to be weeded out. Having a deer you hunted and fed your family with is totally fine. Having an animal mounted that was shot in order to maintain a healthy population is also fine. Killing an animal just because it's pretty and you want to brag about it without the intention of making that death mean something on the other hand is crummy.
I think I've met this woman, when I was a kid i took a field trip to the museum for behind the scenes trip and I saw the back where they held all the salted hides, talked about preserving the bones to make the framework of it, and even about the glass eyes and how to make them. I was of course young so i can't remember much but if this is who i met then it's really an honor.

The act of taxidermy doesn't bother me. What bothers me is going out and hunting an animal in its prime for the express purpose of displaying it somewhere. Cutting a life short for art. I respect taxidermy of naturally passed animals or animals hunted for food

I can respect that, and this isn't meant to be telling you you're wrong or anything, just letting you know something. The vast majority of people who hunt, even the ones who like having animal heads on their wall or full-body taxidermies on display, are hunting for food. Even a lot of animals killed on paid safaris are used for meat that's given to local tribes, and the money from those hunts is used for conservation efforts in the region. So much so that areas in Africa with no hunting allowed do considerably worse in terms of animal population than areas where hunting is regulated.
Yes, there are people who don't care about taking the life of an animal, and are totally fine just killing it and wasting the meat and putting it on display like some evil villain. But those people are few and far between, and as we continue to understand animals more and more the people who do that become less and less common. But I respect the love you have for these animals, and I can tell that's where your opinion comes from, I just wanted to offer my knowledge on the subject to just let you know that probably 99% of steady hunters are ethical and love the wilderness more than most.
@@Connor-dy6wq I have to disagree to an extent as someone who has a family history of taxidermy, hunting and conservation. While there are many ethical hunters, there are many who aren't and that's coming from someone who's family relies on hunting for food. Poaching, trophy hunting and generally killing for the sake of just being able to brag that you brought down a rare or beautiful animal is still a huge problem in the community and it needs to be addressed by ethical hunters. The idea that most meat on African big game hunting going to local tribes is also not really common place in my experience (not to say that it doesn't happen, just that it's not what it's made to be). Conservation issues in African countries are factored by so much more than just if hunting is or isn't allowed. A vast majority of the trouble is caused by humans in the first place due to things like colonization, war, poaching, climate change and rapid habitat loss. There's an issue of rich people exploiting tough financial situations and committing dirty dealing in order to be able to kill for nothing but fun. I can also say for a fact I've very rarely seen a single person eat things like wolves, foxes, big cats and so on that come through my family's business. The hide isn't being used nor are a lot of the hunts of those types of animals conducted to maintain healthy populations, meaning they tend to be killed for sport. Hunting and taxidermy is full of grey areas and pretending that it's all sunshine and daisies or that bad hunting only happens on the rare occasion only does harm, just much as demonizing it does. The problems need to be called out and cracked down on because sweeping them under the rug just makes supposed good hunter complacent.
@@summercucumber4964 Not trying to say it's all sunshine and roses, and I suppose it could be that in different places there's a different attitude about hunting. Where I'm from I don't think I could find anyone who doesn't eat what they kill, except for maybe animals caught eating livestock and shot. Even then a lot of people would still cook it up in a stew.
I suppose I should've made myself clearer earlier, I wasn't counting poachers and other people who illegally or shadily hunt animals. I know that's a pretty big problem in some places, I just wasn't considering them because I don't consider those people hunters. But I should've clarified that. I was mainly trying to point out that your average hunter is someone who just likes getting outdoors and hunting.
A lot of times people outside hunting circles don't see a difference between the low-lifes just taking animals lives for sport and trophies, and a regular ethical hunter who happens to enjoy displaying their animals. So I should've clarified that when I said "hunter" I wasn't including those types of pure sport hunters.

@@sjhdxv are you dumb? taxidermists dont kill the animals, they just preserve them. Most taxidermists i know only use roadkill or animals that have died from natural causes. Plus these taxidermists in the video work at museums, the entire purpose is to preserve history

I find it so interesting to see my hometown (Milwaukee Wisconsin) Taxidermist pursue such an art. I love what she does and she inspires me (as a young lady) To embrace my taxidermy

I wish that wolf guy or gorilla lady could do him. That work is absolutely incredible! Such precision and the stories the pieces tell is beautiful! I live in Australia and we dont have talent on such a magnitude here. You truly cant appreciate this until you open up your heart to the love of animals with an atrists dna in the mix.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved companion. I just lost my 16 yr old and my 13 yr old Australian shepherd dogs in the past month. They lived long enough to help raise my puppy to adulthood and teach him the ways of being a Good Dog. I hope you are not disappointed in the finished work. It will look like A dog, but it might not look like YOUR dog with the inevitable distortions of taxidermy and the spark of life missing from the eyes. That's why a lot of taxidermists don't do pets. But you've left yourself a lot of options by getting him frozen quickly. My 13 yr old Aussie is in the walk in freezer at work.

Its surreal to know that my best friend is in the kitchen and i just want to hug him and see his smiling face.
I am also looking into dry freezing him as i suppose the fear of him not looking like him will cause more anguish that antisipated. From the reseach i have done, dry freezing will make him look like him more so than taxidermy. Who knows, i may even cremate him. Just the cost of getting him interstate is insane!!! And then the cost of the dry freeze! And all the vet bills that have accumulated over the last week..... extremely overwhelming! May i ask you what your plan is for your beloved friend?

6:00 I REALLY appreciate his honesty about requiring family support. Often people refuse to admit they got it or needed it and gaslight the rest of us that we are just lazy or dumb or they are an exceptionally amazing lone wolf. The truth is the support is literally invaluable and some things are impossible to get into or go far in without actual support! Well said sir.

I am a lifelong hunter, and have had a lifelong love and interest in taxidermy (wildlife art), and am now finally living that dream! Being a hunter and eating the animals the harvest and then recreating the animal I saw on the hoof to be revered and respected by generations to come is the full circle. Humans are stewards of the earth, and hunters who are also taxidermists are the epitome of what that means, for conservation and for art.
This is beyond my comprehension. Is awesome and dynamic how living being in appearance these animals are. The amount of talent it looks like it took to have the little whiskers on Samson's top lip stands out in my mind. Those tiny little details make it real for me. I had no idea you had to gut the animal also. This belongs in the Olympics
Even as a kid I thought Taxidermy was very fascinating, when the little amount of times I ever went to the National History Museum as a kid. I would look at the displays in and out of glass. From small mammals to medium-sized birds to giants. I always knew the organs were removed. But I never knew the process was so intricate and complex. It truly is an art form in a lot of was for how technical it can be. What's also fascinating to me is the idea of turning a creature that is real and was alive at one point and bringing that life back into them, to do something interesting with a organism that's long since passed away. You can see the personality and portrayal up close. And see the respect the people have for nature to recreate them in such an accurate way. Mounts are always great to observe and inspect. Taxidermy was of course always given a bad rap in media hehe. Its usually seen as dark, evil, or creepy hehe and the animals sometimes look like zombies or have horrified expressions. I personally never saw it that way. They're just very interesting and I hope museums don't replace their displays
people who say taxidermy isn't art are the same people who say that they should get free drawings and that they'll pay you with exposure

I feel like the term wildlife artist would easily be confused with someone who draws wildlife, so perhaps taxidermy artist would make sense, because I am not denying its an art form, it just seems like a confusing term.
He wants to remove the word "Taxidermu" completely.
The one guy with long hair seems jaded. He one of the best and loves his art but thinks it's not good enough for his own children or family to learn. I find it strange how he seems grinchy and he's so good.
From what I was getting, he seems like a very wise man and has basically full knowledge in what he does, definitely respect him but I can see the “grinch” part you’re talking about, we all have that side in us though

Went in thinking taxidermy was weird, came out thinking it was cool!
I feel that taxidermy is actually a really lovely art form. To me, it shows admiration and respect for the animal. It ensures no piece of it goes to waste (in an ideal scenario).
I truly don’t understand how people can assume a taxidermist hates animals when they dedicate their lives to preserving the memory and beauty of them.
I truly feel this is an art that is one of the hardest to accomplish
I have a sudden urge to learn taxidermy

If I was crazy rich and happened to have a huge mansión, i would love to have that wolf mouse piece in my entrance foyer. Ohhhhhh the faces of whoever opened my front door.

I was also surprised at the air brushing. This form of taxidermy really is art. I love seeing personality and essence on once-living creatures. They capture it so well.
They do such good work, they bring the dead back to life and give you the ability to have it in your living room, it's stunning and magical.

The cats are one of the hardest things to make look alive, these are incredible! I am a hunter and trapper and this is one of the coolest things that people can do in my opinion. I think everyone in this type of work gains so much respect for the creatures just like most hunters and trappers, even though many think that it is cruel. There is such a stigma around it but every one of these artists deserves so much recognition. I hope to learn how to do this one day, it is awesome!
These taxidermist are true talented artists when they make these animals look true to life and have each individual sculpture taxidermy animal look individual and have their own characteristic. It just blows me away. I enjoy working with Clay and I paint wildlife with acrylic paint on canvas panels small paintings 8” x 10” or 11” x 14”. These artists on this video are truly talented. I love that there is so many positive taxidermy videos. I have special interest in taxidermy (due to my asd) and i'm really hoping to get into it more. One of my dream jobs is to work on cleaning up and looking after taxidermy , even if i can't it's something i'd love to do on the side when i hopefully become an embalmer. I'm lucky enough my family support me in wanting to do this , i just wish people would understand that it's an artform i'm not a horror film villain

There are videos to watch, but each taxidermist has their own secrets/techniques. It's a very hands on learning experience
Hunting is as natural for humans as it is for animals. We are so separated from it in our pampered grocery store lives that we can't relate it to our survival but it is in fact natural for people too.

I’m 12 and I’ve always wanted to be a taxidermist this really inspires me to follow my dreams and makes me love taxidermy even more, me and my dad are both pretty big hunters so I love the idea of taxidermy or for short I love taxidermy

As a Young Man I too started taxidermy with the northwest school of taxidermy!.... I was 10 at the time and it remained with me most of my adult life.... I hunted and fished and I'm truly grateful to have all the game animals that I harvested.... Snapshots of time that cannot be recreated without a mount....

So THIS is why a Whitetail Deer can cost upwards of $1000.00 to mount. I never new so much went into it. This is definitely a "you get what you pay for" game.

actually my shop has done most of the taxidermy at Cabelas and bass pro shops accross the U.S! It's always so much fun!

Taxidermy is so amazing to me. I am an artist and I actually tried to taxidermy a little songbird that my cat killed (oops!). I cleaned it super good and used borax to preserve, but I ended up tearing the skin when I tried to sew it back up. I really want to try again and learn! Being a taxidermist at a museum would be my dream job. I am saddened that museums are shifting away from dioramas. I still hope that I can get into this industry!

CGI is amazing, but as a 'pen and paper' or digitally drawn artist there's nothing better than seeing the real thing in front of you. I wish I had a museum accessible to me so I could study further. I could never do taxidermy myself, but I'll be damned if I can't respect the artists that do

Dyani Putnam Im one of what they would call a vulture. I collect mostly road kill or natural deaths. I do have a couple cull animals but none of my animals were killed for this work.

A lot of these animals kill other animals and do so in a much more painful way than a bullet through the heart. Getting hit with a bullet and dying within milliseconds is a blessing compared to a brutal death at the hands of a predator. I don't think that animals should be killed for the sole purpose of taxidermy but if a hunter kills a deer, feeds his family for weeks with the meat from it, then gets it mounted to preserve its beauty and cherish for decades then I think that's great. That is using every part of the animal to its fullest.
Most of these animals will not live long, weather hunted or not..
Now they will last multiple lifetimes
