As a child, our neighbor hired me to skive and join leather strips for his business. I learned basic leather tooling from him but couldn't afford a set of stamps, so I filed my own from the heads of 20 penny nails. Seeders, leaves, basket weaves... I copied most of Al's fancy store bought tools and went on to make loads of leather items from scraps he gave me. Learning to stitch and lace enabled me to make some pretty professional looking things at just 12 YO... Spent the next 50 years working with my hands and loved it...
"You don't just buy leather, you buy the right leather". Fascinating half hour. Very enlightening. Had never considered the role of imperfections, or that different body parts would yield different leathers. Please Dom, seek out more of these special craftspeople and give them the publicity they deserve (and more fascinating content for your subscribers).
As Steve rolled out that leather hide @9:35, I was wisked back to my youth at Camp Palmetto Boy Scout summer camp in the mountains of the North Carolina (US) and could actually smell (in my mind) the rich, earthy smell of a genuine leather hide. Great memories.
Having just looked at your website, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is sold out! Might I suggest you ring up Steve and order another 500, oh and some more stickers! 😆
You always amaze me with your ability to connect with other master crafts folks and then share them with us. Your appreciation for them mirrors exactly how I feel so thanks for taking us along. Great episode Dom👏🏼❤️👏🏼❤️👏🏼
Well, that was interesting, thanks to Steve for showing us around! Rather astounded at the amount of hides that go to waste though. (Also, when I saw the leather in the thumbnail I was expecting Susie to show up!)
I completely agree with the idea of embracing imperfections in natural materials. I make furniture and I try, customer allowing, to use the timber some fine furniture makers would discount for its flaws, knots and burrs. I think it’s these imperfections are where the true beauty of nature is. Martin
Wow Amazing!! Steve, like yourself Dom, is an absolute legend. It's refreshing to see a craftsman willing to share his knowledge and experience with the younger generation in order to keep these trades alive, it's one of the reasons why I'm a self confessed "Repair Shop" addict and love watching you restore cars, motorbikes and all and sundry that come thru the RS doors. Keep up the great work Dom and please pass on my appreciation to the RS crew. All the best from New Zealand.
I look forward to watching your videos every week. You made a comment about how therapeutic sewing the keyring was - I find the same watching your videos. I am too slow getting to the merch - more keyrings please!
I just ordered a key ring. I live in the west coast of the USA in the state of Oregon, which is right above the state of California. Thank you Dom! Jack in Salem Oregon
Looks like Steve needs to get busy and make several thousand next run... I went to buy one but they were already sold out ;-) Lovely episode thanks for sharing it with us!
Hi Dom, I was pleasantly surprised by the price point for the key rings considering the amount of work that goes into them. Sadly I missed the boat with buying one, so I've signed up for a notification message...
Having worked leather (on & off) for 50 years or so, & edited a magazine for the ANZL (Association of New Zealand Leatherworkers) using an Amiga 1000 and dot matrix printer, (creating one page at a time in graphics mode), I was pleased to see your visit to Nelson & Forge, AND to see a barista next door (my other passion, as you know) = blown away. I’m again encouraged to get back into creating, and have started learning airbrushing! Keep up the good work; we always look forward to watching The Repair Shop on Friday evenings (here in New Zealand) and your videos every Monday morning. Now all we need is Make it to Market to air here!
Hi Dominic, new subscriber here, thanks for sharing this I always wanted to learn how to stitch like this. You and everyone in the repair shop have inspired me to creat some special projects. If I had the money to travel, I would love to go to the repair shop and spend time seeing all of you. Thanks again for sharing. P.s. the comments about Suzy are so immature. She often praises the craftsmanship of other leather workers and enjoys what she does. She is superb at her profession, a true artist. You all are. 💐
Well I did get my stickers last time but this time everything was sold out.well maybe next time.Don’t take it too hard if someone is not giving their approval on the content of the show. Can’t please everyone. I started with the repair shop and the Ranalah story hooked me. God Speed!
I expect we'll see him at your next Market episode ? I love anything leather ! I ALWAYS use Leather Belts, Leather Wallets, a pair of Leather Boots, which I had made in Bangkok about 20 years ago, {based on my English ones. I know a little shop ! }, and a Travel Pochette, {made in England},, that I have used for the last 60 years ! I condition ALL my Leather regularly, so that it lasts ! GREAT Episode Dom ! LOVE it ! Take care ! Stu xx { from Thailand }
Wow, I watched this the morning after it was released and went to the Ranalah website at 10.00am. All sold out by the time I got there :( I think another run of 500 would be good!
Lovely video Dom, it just shows what skills are out there, hopefully for many years to come. Manufacturing has it place, of course it does, but there's nothing to beat something that is hand made with the relevant skills having been passed down.
The comment if you don’t like the leather etc is my motto for wood turning, I love the imperfections as it adds character to the finished product. Great video
So cool to see you try this. I had never done any stiching before but last winter I handstiched new seat upholstry for my super seven build. Turns out the stiching was easy but the pattern making was the hard part.
Just got home and see a new video from you, so nice to see someone so passionate about keeping an old craft going and he seems such a nice chap. Though I will definitely buy one of those key rings, but they have sold out already! Please tell me you will be making more Will you be making t-shirts too?
Ha ha ha! You’re the only person I know who knocks before entering a shop! So funny. I received my stickers this week too. Thanks very much. 1 on my tool box, the others on my car windscreens. Cheers.
For the Half Ranalahs, with the lower rollers being smaller than the full size Ranalahs; Instead of the chunky wooden box, you could think about having leather satchel bags made for them. With a separate compartment for each roller.
Hi dom I have been a follower of the repair shop since since it began and enjoyed it so much and started following you as I am a classic car fanatic for years. I found the ranalah quite interesting to start with but now it has become quite boring. I look forward to your Sunday video on TH-cam with laughing John but watched it tonight and can't believe it keyring in the leather industry. You seem to be just promoting your own thing now. If we can't see that porsche finished you've lost a viewer. Why would I want a ranalah keyring or a sticker? Come on dom get back to the real world!
@@shedtime_au - far from it. There's much more to Dom than car restoration. Other people are restoring Porsches on TH-cam, few people are championing at-risk craft skills like this.
@@PeterJewell2Thank you for the support peter, you are right, this was never going to be just a car restoration channel, its just whatever I get up to, if people think thats "loosing the plot" or "boring" thats fine with me! they can go watch the other car restoration channels, Thank you
This video has made me so happy. First, it's shown the needle treading/knotting technique in a way that I finally get. Tried for years to work it out from books. Second, it's cleared a mental block I have had about how to attach a leather strap (read 'belts from Primark') to the carrying case for my telescope. Just two semicircular cutouts on opposite sides.. so simple, yet so effective!!! Should you decide to restock, I will certainly be buying. 👍 Extra bonus - the keyrings also look splendid. 💚🐇🐴💚
Great video! It made me want to go apprentice there to help Steve finish the 100. I grew up doing embroidery & cross stitch. Surprise - he was almost done with them! Best wishes for your continued success 😊🙋🏻♀️
Am local to Clevedon so I think I'll be paying them a visit - used to have a leather shop in our village but sadly it seems to be a declining trade so am delighted to find out there's somewhere so local... P.S. thanks Dom for the stickers that arrived safely, they're great!
Really great posting, so interesting and I really love good leather. Are you going to get in more stock of the key rings, only just seen your posting late Monday evening and predictably you have sold out. I would love one. Thanks for your vlogs.
