Lindsay this content shows the combination of dedication, skill, persistence, work ethic, with the frustration, fun, and team work needed to take part in competition at any level. Yes on practice days you can chop, change, and to a degree have some fun with the day. Tweaking methods, fly selection, lines, retrieves, areas. On the day it is switch, on job done, focus on getting that fish to the net. All that plus filming and the editing afterwards. Hats off to you, for keeping all the plates spinning.
Wondered if you know Chris Guthrie....we fished with the Northumbrian Badgers in the 80,s. Recently met up again after 30 years and been having a great laugh remembering those days.
Excellent. We enjoyed that. We have never tried a " real " competition. Obviously, we compete against each other, but we are early in our fishing career. Perhaps you can share planned tactics and how you change them with conditions? And comment when your boat partner does something completely different would be useful.
I competed in April 2023 for the first time. It was a great experience. All lake beats. I placed 5th out of 16 women in the individual rankings. Was happy! :-)
Great video this I really enjoyed it. As for that style of fishing I'd love to have ago of doing it but don't have the rod for it and would mean a full new kit.
Great video as always Lindsay. Very enjoyable and educated me that even when the weather turns, go find a sheltered bay to keep fishing. Question: How do you find out where the competitions are and how to enter? It's something I'd like to do in the future, so any information would be appreciated 👍
Hi Jim, the best thing you can do if you want to get into competition fly fishing is join a club. There are fly fishing clubs across the country that would be glad of your interest. Many of these clubs fish in league matches and this is the quickest way to build experience. If joining a club is not viable then entering national qualifiers is another way to gain that experience I hope that helps.
great video once again, i would love to have a go at competition fishing but feel my skill leavel and not having the must have rods lines ect would look bad....is there a place to start....i live in northants so have all the big waters close by
You have to start somewhere, I started with a floater, intermediate and sinker. I built the kit up over years. You live in the perfect place have a look at Grafham Water Fly Fishers or the Invicta Club. 👍

Hi Stewart It’s great to hear that you wish to fish competitions, one thing is for sure the sport needs young people to fish Competitions. As I understand it you are already in a club. That’s a good starting point. If you are over 18 years old then you can fish the Nationals, if you make one of the top 3 rods in your club. If you are still under 18 then you can enter the youth national. Each club can put two 3 man teams into the Scottish Clubs Championship. So try to win your club championship, learn from your experienced club members. If your club members like Competition fishing, put two x 3 man teams into the Scottish Clubs. That’s a lot of fishing. Thank you Lindsay for a look at a tournament style different than what I do here in Texas, USA. I really love the tournament format you showed. How did you place? Cheers!
Could you clarify that the rolypoly it's not allowed under IFFA rules. It was shown but maybe that wasn't in competition? I think I prefer to view show and explain technique type of video. Thanks
Unfortunately it is the cost of match fishing and to really compete you do need to fish the practice day or you miss out. It is a lot for a family man to take off two days and the cost . Everything is about the money nowadays maybe it needs to go the way of coarse fishing and have money prizes for the future to lure the new anglers in

Another nice video ...however I have quite a few questions ..that I hope you may be able to help with ....1 how easy is it to get in to competition fishing ..2 how expensive is it or inexpensive even 3 do you need to join a club 4 .can I use my still water gear .5 do you get allocated a partner or do you need a partner to do completion ??? ...I have prob a load more but that's more than enough for now .

1. Most angling clubs have competition days - it is often easier to get started there. 2. It can get expensive the further that it goes on - competitions on the Lake, Rutland etc can get fairly expensive. 3. You don't have to join a club there are competitions advertised usually at different fisheries just check their FBs. 4. Yes, its basically all stillwater gear that people use - however the flies that you use have to be within the competition rules - you will be told which rules have to be followed and you can check from there. 5. Depends on the competition - there are bank competitions and then there are boat competitions. A vast majority of boat competitions are done via a draw - you both get shots each of controlling the boat. Should add that as you are in the north east you can enter into Scottish National Qualifiers in a fair few fisheries up that way.

Hi pal, do you de- barb or change to a barbless hook fly after 4 fish🤔thanks.
Hi Kev, depends on the circumstances, if the fishing is fast and furious I just crush the barb. If its steady I would change to manufactured barbless.
How do you get judged on the fish you don't keep? Is it just time?
pretty high chop for the small boats!
It’s just a number till you reach the total. After that it is 1lb per hour until the end of the match.
That looked good kind of line was that you where fishing blue yellow is 1 ?
Guessing one of the older model of an Airflo forty plus "lake distance" Expert Di5 but I'm sure Lindsay will tell you😄
That’s right buddy DI5 forty plus.

Fair play pal.
What fishery is this?
Rutland Water
Why do they have you kill your first 5 fish?
I think it is so guys still have the option to take a few fish for the table.
