Jamel, this one might be too long for a reaction video. However, after watching you react to so much music, I know you will appreciate and be blown away by this. Being there for these 38 minutes is one of my most cherished musical memories. It was especially meaningful to me because it was a breakthrough after the band seemed to struggle all summer to find “IT.” th-cam.com/video/TI6xUJ4fmDk/w-d-xo.html
Tom Marshall was on a cruise with his wife, and she got on his nerves, so he wrote this song about pushing her off the ship. “In a minute I’ll be free, and you’ll be splashing in the sea. We’ll hear a tiny cry as the ship goes sliding by... free!”
Tom used to not tell people the origins of songs. He wanted them to mean whatever they meant to the listener as long as they did the work and really listened. The first time I thought deeply about this song, I thought it was about improvisational music and how the artist is set free and the audience swims in the emotion of the music.
@@euphegenia Uh...kinda. If someone thinks Waltz #2 by Elliot Smith is a happy, fun song about rainbows and frolicking in the sun; then they are just pure wrong.
The other Phish Heads and I are happy to see you bring this to your page! I went to see Phish and jam bands like the Disco Biscuits & moe. with my dearly departed best friend from college. The first concert I went to after a car wreck where I suffered a traumatic brain injury was moe.
Been following Phish since i got hooked in 1998... this is my favorite song... its amazing to see someone come at it with a new and fresh perspective... glad you liked it!!!!! it's not for everyone, but those who get it, really got it... and form instant bond over it.... hope to see you at a show one day :)
Love to see another Phish reaction, Jamel! I really appreciate you mentioning the lighting! Chris Kuroda, known to phans as CK5 has been the band's lighting director since the late 80's. As the band improvises the music, Kuroda seamlessly reacts with the lighting, as though he's the 5th member of the band. Over the years his designs have changed as the technology has caught up to his imagination, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in lighting for concert touring. I've had the opportunity to work with him as a stagehand and lighting tech in the past, and not only is he a great artist, but a great dude! Another bit about the Phish crew, their longtime former sound engineer, Paul Languedoc is also a brilliant luthier and built all of Trey's guitars over the years (and a few basses for Mike). Trey's unique tone and endless sustain starts with these beautiful hollow body instruments.
CK5 was a sticker we shared in 1995 -97 to give love to Chris Karoda the lighting director. It was a take on the Calogne, also Chris was the fifth member due to the importance his light had become. "If only for a moment" he felt the love he deserved.

Talkin on getting the feel for each instrument during the deep dives into jam: total bluegrass sentiment, that carries through all of the greatest of jam bands
To be in the arena is unlike anything in the world. Never the same set list or song played the same way more than once. The best live band ever. Long may they run!! Thanks for posting!
This was definitely one of the best performances of Free in recent years. Especially considering it was one of the last shows Phish played before COVID. Trey plays with an inspiration I haven’t felt from this song since it’s performance in Brooklyn 2004. Definitely a top notch Free.
Man so awesome to see a reaction channel to phish. I love music, mostly see hip hop reactors, so to see this is epic, you just gained a subscriber!! Hell yeah!!
Great review. Talking about how an extended jam gives the listener an opportunity to experience each instrument is an important component of jam band music. The way individuals meld into and contribute to the collective sound is the essence of group improvisation.
Hey Jamal, I LOVE your videos and watching your genuine reactions to great music. If you wanna know where the shipwreck came from, check out phish’s 2014 Halloween set where they covered an old Disney album of sound effects. To me, Free kind of reminds me of rebirth and the feeling of a weight lifted off your shoulders; through psychedelic and mystical experience we are often able to temporarily part with our egos and recognize our oneness with everything. That realization is really liberating
I hope we can all get out this year to experience Phish the way they're meant to be....Live and in person! They are unrivaled in their creativity, improvisation, musicality and love for their phans.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! It is with so much gratitude that I thank you for viewing this. It is my understanding that the entire album that this song is featured on (Billy Breathes), was written by Trey Anastasio and Tom Marshall while they were on vacation in the Virgin Islands, and the rumor has it- with a heavy amount of fungus.
Also, there’s a lot of comments so I’m not sure if anyone explained some of what happened in that jam. So that Free is actually Free > Shipwreck > Free. Shipwreck is from the Halloween 2014 night where they did an entire set based off an old Disney record used for haunted houses. The cat meow is from another Halloween 2014 song called Your Pet Cat. Then when Trey starts saying Rescue Squad, this is from the first show since the New Year’s Eve show where Trey got stuck on a raised platform and had to be rescued and started singing Rescue Squad on the way down
The noises and voices were from the Halloween cover they did in 2014. It went into a song called “Shipwreck “ because they were playing in Mexico. The rescue square was a call to when “Trey” the guitarist, got stuck up in the air on NYE in 2019, when they were doing there show gag.
Thanks Jamal for the honest reactions, your either a real good actor or we are in the same 'groove" 'vibe" call it whatever, they have helped me realize I have been blessed. I say blessed because I've seen most of the bands you are discovering live (some multiple times) and had those same experiences. One of my personal favorite live experiences was Rush, can't remember the tour don't ask, they played Spirit of Radio and when they hit the verse "Invisible airwaves Crackle with life Bright antennae bristle the energy" I literally felt that all around me. My personal opinion is that good music is still relevant because the questions they raise haven't been answered yet. Music is a compass and you choose the direction.
Probably one of the best "critiques" of Phish.... ' bop bop bop....and Phish, has arrived'. That's every show, in a nutshell. And it's glorious. More, more more!!! Stash, please. Any show from '95.
Phish is a band that defies categorization. They’re all so talented they can do any style of music and do it well. If you’re crawling into the Phish rabbit hole then you’ve got a lot of exploring to do...
Wanna go real deep down that rabbit hole check out Oysterhead. The Band consist of Trey Anastasio (Phish), Les Claypool (Primas) and Stuart Copeland (Police) so sit through this album and your brain will represent said mollusk
Thank you @Jamel! This was the last live concert I went to just before we all started to lock down. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience before going into the weirdest year of my life.
The samples are from Disney’s Chilling Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House which they “covered” for Halloween one year. The Rescue Squad is a reference to Trey getting stuck above the stage on a platform on New Year’s Eve and needing to be rescued to get down.
Always appreciate the Phish content, my brother! When they come back it can be hard to get a ticket, but if you go to a show I can guarantee you'll get in. Wear your TH-cam gear. You'll be recognized & I promise you'll get hooked up. Do. Not. Miss. The. Opportunity. Much love, man! ✌
Summer of 99 at Oswego County Airport as they play this song with the sun setting behind the stage, 56,000 people jamming, dancing going nuts... and then the crowed released the balloons! What a sight to see and shared experience to have. Since that moment this has been my favorite Phish song. So glad your enjoying these guys, theyve been a source of joy for me for decades now!.

Great live performance and love the jamming, but you should check out the studio version on your own when you get a chance. The vocals are amazing! Billy Breathes is my favorite Phish studio album. Check Page's jam "Cars Trucks Buses" - total keyboard rock out! For awesome extended live jams, try "Stash" and "Tweezer". Keep the Phish coming! Peace from SF
The beauty of Phish songs is they are open to interpretation. Even if the writer has their own idea of what it means, the lyrics are meant to connect with everyone uniquely in their own way. This song always reminds me of playing in the pool with my daughters when they were younger and needed my help to stay afloat.

" fare the well" shows. MUCH LOVE
November 25 1998 I had a strange evening. Went to Albany NY, went to the show, a friend puddled me with liquid. This song, although hearing it 1000 times before did something to my brain that cold November night in upstate NY 😃

i probably listen to about 10 hrs/ wk, i can’t remember the last time i listened to any studio versions. only definite memory of studio is the big boat release
I don't see anyone commenting on this, but the music around the woman narrating is not actually Free, it's "Shipwreck" which is from their 2014 halloween concert. Many years they play Halloween shows where they cover an album in it's entirety. 1994 they did The Beatle's White Album, 1995- Who Quadrophenia, 1996 Talking Heads Remain in Light. 1998 Velvet Underground Loaded. In 2014 they played the1964 Disneyland album Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House, which is mostly narrations with some sound effects, which they jammed out a song to each of the tracks. "Shipwreck" being one of them, the cat sounds come from "My Pet Cat." So, technically, this should have been listed as Free>Shipwreck>Free. And as for the lights, Phish has one of the best lights in the business. When you think about the fact that they are improvising, and often playing without a pre-determined setlist. It's a shame these pro videos spend so much time close up to the band, sometimes you want to just sit back and watch the show.
@@scottbc31h22 Though, that wasn't for Halloween, that was a few days after in '98. I remember going to the UIC shows a few days after that, and hearing all about how they had played it, and couldn't wait to get my hands on the tapes.
Trying to remember the show. They played bouncing round the room while bouncing on trampolines. Always loved this band, but that just blew me away when I saw it. Going to have to look that up after this now.
Love your insights so much. You need to go see a show man!! The energy is going to be so off the hook coming back, whether later this year or next year... You gotta get to a show. I will buy you a ticket. For real. Whenever the tour gets announced, you tell me your closest tour stop and I'll hook you up. There is no substitute for seeing them live!
This is from the Moon Palace Live Phish broadcast - the audio issues are in the stream unfortunately (or that's how it sounds). The brief recorded spoken part is a improv mashup from a Halloween show a few years back - followed by some other inside jokes the band is playing with the audience. Free is always great to hear, especially from it's breakout days in the 90s. I still recommend the Divided Sky from the Clifford Ball. th-cam.com/video/avUeS5SZHTU/w-d-xo.html or Esther from Junta

Check Page's jam "Cars Trucks Buses" - total keyboard rock out! For awesome extended live jams, try "Stash" and "Tweezer". Keep the Phish coming!
Peace from SF
I'm so gratephul that my daughter introduced me to Phish years ago!
I like how this song has a real positive vibe to something as dark as murdering you significant other by throw him/her overboard
The beauty of Phish songs is they are open to interpretation. Even if the writer has their own idea of what it means, the lyrics are meant to connect with everyone uniquely in their own way. This song always reminds me of playing in the pool with my daughters when they were younger and needed my help to stay afloat.
This made my day. Thanks!
Ain't no party like a Phish party
I was at this that show! Phish Mexico is ridiculous. Your reaction to the samples made me smile. Keep phishin!
Rescue Sqaud!!->12.31.19 after tweepeise 👍🏼
Hello! I have Phish radio on in my kitchen, sometimes i just have to stop and listen to the wizardry. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for doing more Phish! You're genuine appreciation of the music is infectious! Please do the 10/31/94 Reba, I think you're ready for it.
How there is 15 unlikes is beyond me.? This is pure improvisation and so FUCKING FUNKY!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
Came for the primus, notice the Grateful Dead, was delighted to see talking heads, and stayed along because of Phish... Lol love your channel and your reactions keep it up with the jam bands man! ☮️ 💕
Jamal’s reaction to Phish = “Ohhh!!!!!!! Nasty!!!!!!” Love it!
We need more Grateful Dead! Hard to Handle (Ladies and Gentelman...) for the pigpen era and Dancing in the Street 5/8/77 !!!
This group is legendary for being serious improvising jammers. Listen to them a lot on Sirius-XM Channel 29.
We've gotta get you to a show when this is all over.
Trey said in an interview with Charlie Rose that the Grateful Dead were the greatest band to ever come out of the U.S. and I agree.
This was one of the best days of my life
you are in a great mood today Mel! FREEEEEEEEEEE! yeah! get down! I watched your podcast with the Dead fans from march, yesterday. man you are one good human brother. your back story of your life is inspiring. taking care of your brothers and being a role model. glad you made it out. we need more people like you in this world. Phish and the Dead have a lot of spill over in fan bases. if you don't like both there is mutual respect between the fans. there was a passing of the torch of sorts in 2015 when trey (phish) played Jerry's part with the Dead in SF and CHI. check that out! " fare the well" shows. MUCH LOVE
Love this ,spot on!!!! try the String Cheese Incident
November 25 1998 I had a strange evening. Went to Albany NY, went to the show, a friend puddled me with liquid. This song, although hearing it 1000 times before did something to my brain that cold November night in upstate NY 😃
Spac 1995 down with disease > free 40 minutes of mind blowing improv.
that entire second is stunning, getting a set with not only DWD, not only Free, but a very intense YEM, ANNNNND closing with Antelope. like come on 👏🏼💜👏🏼💃🏽
Jamel_AKA_Jamal. You make every song better. Your reaction is the same as my reaction when I hear these songs. You make all of our days better, preciate you. ok I’m a keep watching more of your videos!
Great stuff! a personal favorite phish song/version of mine is Punch You in the Eye from their Halloween 98' set
yay phish! Billy Breathes is their best studio album in my opinion; live is a whole other world. This version is amazing!!
yes I agree, BB was my first record from Phish in the 90s, keep on rockin'
i probably listen to about 10 hrs/ wk, i can’t remember the last time i listened to any studio versions. only definite memory of studio is the big boat release
"Shipwreck" being one of them, the cat sounds come from "My Pet Cat."
So, technically, this should have been listed as Free>Shipwreck>Free.
And as for the lights, Phish has one of the best lights in the business. When you think about the fact that they are improvising, and often playing without a pre-determined setlist. It's a shame these pro videos spend so much time close up to the band, sometimes you want to just sit back and watch the show.
They also covered Dark Side Of The Moon
@@scottbc31h22 Though, that wasn't for Halloween, that was a few days after in '98. I remember going to the UIC shows a few days after that, and hearing all about how they had played it, and couldn't wait to get my hands on the tapes.
I saw the song title.quicky and thought it was the song "Fee" which is another great Phish tune.
Keep the phish coming!
Yes. We are here.
Why, yes, ...yes we are.
Trying to remember the show. They played bouncing round the room while bouncing on trampolines. Always loved this band, but that just blew me away when I saw it. Going to have to look that up after this now.
“That’s that, that’s this, this this n’ that that n’ PHISH....has arrived”.
You are too smooth Jamal keep that Phunk coming baby!
❤️✌️🍄🔥
JOE BONAMASSA....HIGH CLASS GIRL..Live at the Ryman.
When Page gets up, I get down. ❤
The ones I like the best seem to always have the fewest views!
Really loved this version with Rescue Squad sandwiched in there!
Thanks, bro!
