I rented this movie constantly as a kid. It was genuinely one of my absolute favorite movies. It was this, Tremors, Ghostbusters, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I rented this movie so often, my parents could’ve bought several copies instead. I don’t know why they didn’t just buy it for me. I had even seen Batman and Batman Returns several times and owned a ton of the Batman toys and knew that Michael Keaton played Batman and just never realized he was also Beetlejuice because I never read movie credits as a kid. Actually, now that I think about it, I had a lot of Beetlejuice toys, too, so I had several toys based on Michael Keaton. Probably more than any other actor. And now I realize I had Alec Baldwin’s toy from Beetlejuice and The Shadow. It’s so weird to think that toys based on actors from movies used to be so common and now it’s just comic book superheroes and Star Wars.

I love this movie so much and am very hyped for its squeal! Edit: The scene when Barba and Adam come back to their house and it's been three months. This is why when someone passes away especially in the home even though that wasn't the case for them, Clocks were stopped at the time of death. This was to let the deceased's spirit know that time has officially stopped for them since time is not linear on the other side. Sadly this practice along with others such as covering all reflective surfaces, hanging a black wreath on the front door, and opening the windows when someone passes away. are no longer used. Edit 2: If you look up wedding tradition, the colors of the dress have a meaning. Marring in red means you wish yourself dead.
The clock stopping thing is real. One day my grandma's watch suddenly stopped, dead battery she assumed. She later found out that it had stopped around the time my uncle, her son, passed away.

Like how he makes a Hazbin Hotel reference, fun fact the voice actor for Sir Pentious and Adam (Alex Brightman) played as Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice the Musical (he also voices Fizzaroli in Helluva Boss)
Here's a fun fact: Beetlejuice (spelled Betelgeuse) appears in the Japan exclusive Shin Megami Tensei 2 on the Super Famicom. He's a boss at first, but is later recruitable.
The Maitland's deaths were subtly foreshadowed if you looked carefully at the rear bumper on their car. They have a bumper sticker that says, "I brake for animals". Braking for the dog was what ultimately got them killed.
I’ve watched this movie like. At least a dozen times and I never realized the real estate agent was Barbra’s cousin?! This is just one of the myriad reasons why I love Kill Counts
The shrimpy hand scare definitely got me as a kid. But I still love this sequence. RIP Mr bellafonte. At least he got one last viewing at the beetlejuice musical.
13:22 I always loved that shot, with only Davis freaking out and Baldwin just taking a gasp while CLEARLY not watching in the same direction, only years later I realized it was most likely a composite shot, and they were reacting to a cue backstage and did not see whatever FX fuckery was going around in front of Keaton's face
17:40 I was surprised that he knows what Hazbin Hotel is. Could this mean that he should in the future do the kill count of the first season of Hazbin Hotel? Maybe he should do the same for Helluva Boss.
A lot of the behind-the-scenes info about this movie is really interesting - some of the original Michael McDowell scripts were a lot darker and straight-up horror instead of a horror-comedy (and Beetlejuice was originally written to be a demon instead of a super powerful ghost - something cool they brought back for the musical version)! ^^
Beetlejuice: "I'm the ghost with the most babe." 17:54 my favorite part of this film where the dead football players keep calling her coach even though that he survived as she explains to them 😂🤣
You guys don’t even know how excited i was when I got this notification. Beetlejuice is literally my favorite movie, show and musical (I’ve seen the musical on broadway and am seeing it on tour next year!) It’s definitely become my comfort media
My head cannon for the (film) Maitlands is they actually tried to have a baby and either couldn't conceive or lost the pregnancy. It's all in the subtext on Geena Davis' face in that ONE moment when Barbara's cousin (Jane the Realitor?) is telling them they shouldn't live there because the house was "too big for them." While Baldwin really disliked the role (can't blame him because people mix him up with barry bostwick from RHPS to this day), Davis is acting with her whole freaking face in every frame she's in.
@@thebeebz9511 That was my thought too when I rewatched this. I thought maybe it was more evident that it was a miscarriage in an earlier draft or something.
Omg, he really does look like Barry Bostwick in this movie! No wonder it was a small shock every time I was reminded that Alec Baldwin was even in this movie.
That's not head cannon, that was certainly all intentional. There was a time when movies didn't need to explicitly explain everything and they could show information with out telling you.
I'm so use to listening to the musical I sometimes forget that in the film you have to say his name 3 times even if there are breaks or words in between to summon him. In the musical they make it so you have to say his name 3 times in a row unbroken so they can do bits with Lydia teasing BJ by pretending to summon him then backing out after 2 only to do it when she promised she was for real this time
This movie has a special spot in my heart mostly because of the musical. Not only did I see it live last year but I also got a picture autographed by Alex Brightman from my theater teacher as a graduation gift. I can even do a decent impression of Alex Brightman's Beetlejuice.
There's actually a third Harry Belafonte song. It's "Man Smart, Woman Smarter." It plays on the radio when they're doing their morning routine. Edit: I just realized there is a fourth Harry Belafonte song, "Sweetheart From Venezuela," that plays in the beginning. So this soundtrack is half Danny Elfman and half Harry Belafonte
17:42 hazbin hotel mentioned??!! This just made me love this channel more. And kinda ironic how the actor for beetlejuice in the broadway musical is played by alex brightman and he's in both helluva boss AND hazbin hotel :D
Fun Fact: Alex Brightman who plays Beetlejuice in the Broadway shows plays Sir Pentious and Adam in Hazbin Hotel as well as Fizzaroli in Hazbin's sister series Helluva Boss with Adam's maskless design being based on him.
If you know anybody born in the late 80s who makes A LOT of puns/dad jokes, you can probably blame the Beetleguise cartoon that ran on Nick. They might not even remember watching it but if you pull clips from the show, those puns are painfully on the nose...and I kinda love it.
Fun fact, last year during production on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in Vermont someone snuck onto set and somehow managed to steal the 150 pound Delia Deetz sculpture and a decorated lamp post. The mystery remains unsolved to this day.

@JoeyEire-l9pwhy did you say the same thing 4 times

To be fair, it does look like something Valentino would own and make Angel work in.

@@GLCyan07 How much do we have to pay for a Kill Count?
@@AlexHarrison-zv4jjhowever much it takes I will double it for there not to be a kill count on that awful show
And Alex Brightman was in Beetlejuice on Broadway, Hazbin Hotel (2024), and Helluva Boss.
Best description of this movie. It's about a pair of dead people being haunted by living people
I’m sitting at my desk, surviving another Friday, and this drops to save my soul. Love your work James and Co., thank you for the content as always!
The beetle going "Hey, how are ya?" will never fail to make me laugh. So amazingly nonchalant.
17:40. A club filled with demon chicks! Gonna tell my kids this was HAZBIN HOTEL!
I’m going to be as honest as possible, that line is LEGENDARY… I have no words for that!
Like how he makes a Hazbin Hotel reference, fun fact the voice actor for Sir Pentious and Adam (Alex Brightman) played as Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice the Musical (he also voices Fizzaroli in Helluva Boss)
And the voice of Rosie, Leslie Kritzer, was Delia and Miss Argentina! That show is a veritable treasure trove of theatre actors!
Alex brightman is just a national treasure
Ooo
That's how Burton writes out Adam and Barbara from the sequel. The other Adam got them.

I'm so glad you did Beetlejuice, it's one of my favorite movies of all time. And VHS coming up???? You guys are pumping out bangers this year!!!
PS, the "desert realm" is saturn, BJ says so when he spots the yellow sand on Adam's shirt.
A Hazbin Hotel AND a Gravity Falls reference in a Kill Count of one of my favorite movies of all time? James, you’re the best. 😁
YES!!
TIMESTAMPS??
@@rosesolaire5726 there’s the Hazbin Hotel reference at 17:41 and the Gravity Falls one at 20:59
And the Spy vs Spy reference lol, I didn't think anyone even remembered Spy vs Spy.
SWEET!
Here's a fun fact: Beetlejuice (spelled Betelgeuse) appears in the Japan exclusive Shin Megami Tensei 2 on the Super Famicom. He's a boss at first, but is later recruitable.
Born in 2000, this was on 24/7 as a child. Love it, how it adapts the dead is peak… The moving on Family, Beetlejuice himself !!!! Just love it
“Gonna tell my kids this was Hazbin Hotel” made me cackle in a way I legit was not prepared for, good job James
Bro I’ve been waiting since this channel’s inception for you guys to cover “VHS”!!!
Can’t wait for next Friday.
A hazbin hotel AND gravity falls reference in one kill count? Oh James you spoil us!
My cartoon-loving heart remains pleased
I think you should keep the Burton train going by covering Sleepy Hollow. The kills in that movie are wild
Insane that beetlejucie and heathers came out on the same weekend- that’s CRAZY!
17:40 We Just Got A Hazbin Hotel Joke In The Kill Count Before GTA 7.
lol 😂
We got recorded proof of both James A Jannise and Brennan Lee Mulligan saying Hazbin Hotel. What even is 2024 man
That makes sense considering Alex Brightman, the VA for both Adam and Sir Pentious, played Betelgeuse in the Broadway adaptation.

Dead internet theory
I never noticed this, but now I can't unsee it.
17:40 I was surprised that he knows what Hazbin Hotel is. Could this mean that he should in the future do the kill count of the first season of Hazbin Hotel? Maybe he should do the same for Helluva Boss.
Well if he does I’m not gonna watch it
@ shut up
A lot of the behind-the-scenes info about this movie is really interesting - some of the original Michael McDowell scripts were a lot darker and straight-up horror instead of a horror-comedy (and Beetlejuice was originally written to be a demon instead of a super powerful ghost - something cool they brought back for the musical version)! ^^
17:41 The whiplash I got from that reference 😅
YOU KNOW HOW LONG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS OOOOH IM ABOUT TO MAKE A NAME FOR MYSELF
Beetlejuice: "I'm the ghost with the most babe."
17:54 my favorite part of this film where the dead football players keep calling her coach even though that he survived as she explains to them 😂🤣
"I don't think we survived the crash."
"How did you guess?"
It's so good.
I remembered the cartoon version! Also never realized how little screen beetlejuice actually had, just shows Michael Keaton did amazing job!
I loved how they reacted to Jeffrey Jones in Beetlejuice 2. I’m not gonna spoil it, but you’ll love it!

You guys don’t even know how excited i was when I got this notification. Beetlejuice is literally my favorite movie, show and musical (I’ve seen the musical on broadway and am seeing it on tour next year!)
It’s definitely become my comfort media
Geena Davis?
That's not head cannon, that was certainly all intentional. There was a time when movies didn't need to explicitly explain everything and they could show information with out telling you.
Geena?
Can’t wait for you to cover the sequel
I'm so use to listening to the musical I sometimes forget that in the film you have to say his name 3 times even if there are breaks or words in between to summon him. In the musical they make it so you have to say his name 3 times in a row unbroken so they can do bits with Lydia teasing BJ by pretending to summon him then backing out after 2 only to do it when she promised she was for real this time
The musical is so iconic
Beetlejuice: "It's Showtime!"

5:24 "joined the departed" lol took me a second
This movie has a special spot in my heart mostly because of the musical. Not only did I see it live last year but I also got a picture autographed by Alex Brightman from my theater teacher as a graduation gift. I can even do a decent impression of Alex Brightman's Beetlejuice.
When James said “Braise yourselves it’s show time” got me so hyped up for the sequel.

18:33 is the best part of the video, hands down 😂

"Riding in on a sandworm like Thelma and Louise-an Al Gaib" is one of the craziest and most clever lines I have ever heard lol
The Hazbin Hotel joke is 10x funnier when you know some of the characters were voiced by Alex Brightman, who was the Broadway Beetlejuice.
Yeah Beetlejuice ran on Nick around 91-94 then Cartoon Network picked it up from 94-early 98, those were some good years.
This channel and this movie are fantastic! I loved it when I watched it for Literature of Film class recently! Thanks for this video, James!
Fun fact, last year during production on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in Vermont someone snuck onto set and somehow managed to steal the 150 pound Delia Deetz sculpture and a decorated lamp post. The mystery remains unsolved to this day.
I truly couldn't believe that Adam and Barbara were the only kills in the movie. So glad this film qualified for a Kill Count!
Also, super excited for the VHS Kill Count and its unique format! I think its gonna be an all-timer!
