I've taken oil painting classes for many years. My teacher was an art teacher who is now retired. She is wonderful. This brought all those years of information full circle. I love contrast, my teacher creates photo like oil paintings (which is proving to be beneficial information) I'm so glad to see it all finally clicking. Thanks so much for this great tutorial!
I am a longtime painter who has recently had a lengthy block. ---not being able to decide between oil or acrylic ,having pursued both. This straight forward video has unlocked me. I will start playing and improvising with a limited pallet. Thank you. I would like to offer you a suggestion-hope you don't mind. Try holding you brush as a painter is formally taught, rather than like a pencil. I think you will enjoy the freedom of more sweeping arm movements.
I'm a beginner, and I've been struggling with composition. This video, along with part 1, are so, so helpful. The most helpful instruction I've received. I appreciate that you showed close-ups of the work. Really, this has helped me so much. Can't wait to put this lesson into action tomorrow morning.
@@lorimirabelliabstractartist, it was! I learned some significant things when I tried this today. Really excited with what I'm learning. Thank you so much!
Lori, you broke my mental ice block. I have worked so hard at transitioning from fine art (portrait/still life) to abstract and I was about to give up. But this video was the aha moment I needed. Thank you. Please make more videos.
This was a mind blowing experience… this tutorial really opened my eyes & gave me a burst of new insight. I’m so inspired to get to a new canvas!! Thanks Lori
I have been painting for years and never tried an abstract until I watched some of your videos and techniques. Wow. So much fun. In the end I surprised myself at the result. Thanks for the inspiration.
Ok, I really needed this at this moment. I took an abstract painting (one of my first) from my sketchbook to a larger canvas and was getting frustrated I couldn't come close to the sketchbook background. Here's the answer - layers! Just needed a reminder the first layer doesn't have to look good, there will be more
I watched this a long time ago and I should've listened to you, because I know that you know exactly what you're talking about. And what did I do? Started out with many colors. Thank you Lori for all of your information and expertise.
This was a really cool tutorial. I took your advice and tried it without trying to copy you and I was so pleased with my results. I learned so much from this. Thank you for sharing
Thank you. Just saw your video and I wanted to say thanks for the tips. I have never tried this with only one color…Can’t wait….I’m really trying to work on my values and composition. Thank you….
So exciting about your move. We understand you have real life happening. Get all your things unpacked, then get back to your fan club. I moved from Dallas, Texas to a small farm town in mid Michigan. And I love it. Hope you love your small little town. I had to move my pottery studio, which was very challenging. It was worse than moving the house.
Right!!!! same here the studio was the worst! Im pretty much unpacked and settled. Not its about making the house my own...which is the fun part! Yes I'm loving it here and very happy I make the plunge.
You are so generous with your time and knowledge! I love how this was done with basically one color. I'm learning to be brave! I am so happy to be following you here and on Instagram. Enjoy your new home and studio!
Yaaaay, I don't have to spend a lot of money on a zillion colors to start. Love your work. Just found you and looking forward to bingewatching everything you do. Hope you do something like this and add on every week.

Congratulations on your move to Almonte. There is a wonderful artist community there. I am in Ottawa and look forward to the artist tours and gallery showings in the valley.
This is so cool! I just moved to the extreme boonies where I have no Internet and I have to come to the lake to watch videos, make calls, etc. I particularly wanted to watch your videos, and had no idea you'd been MIA - and I'm very excited that you have moved so close to me! You are one of my favourite artists and online teachers. You'll love Almonte! Welcome to Eastern Ontario! Okay...now I can go watch the rest of the video!
Thank you so much. I hear you with the internet thing. Trying to upload a youtube video is an all day affair here ugh....I'm hoping to get back to making videos soon. Just waiting for lights to be set up.
Really enjoyed this. I´ve gotten so frustrated thinking painting is only good enough or valuable when "recreating" reality to the perfect detail. I much more prefer to work on intuition, instinct, emotion and just do whatever my mood wants to do. This is when painting imo becomes fun. Abuse the canvas a little, and really see where the painting takes me instead of being completely rational, have a set fixed plan, and be so cautious of every brush stroke and scared of making tiny mistakes. I guess there is a stigma towards modern art and abstract expressions. So I will be glad to piss some people off with my coming endeavor. Thanks for sharing
haHAHAHA THANKS FOR THE CHUCKLE. yes the stigma is people think this type of art is easy and it's actually the opposite. Have fun with piising off some people ❤️
Thankyou so much Lori. I have finally found someone on youtube doing the kind of art I want to do (fine art large scale textured, layered abstract as opposed to crafting projects). About to binge the rest of your videos 😊
I would love to see Part 2 (and 3 and 4 - whatever it takes, but bite-size pieces like this) of this video where you take this painting to the next level, and continue on this theme of layering! Thank you Lori! I’ve been having fun incorporating more marks into my art over the past year. I love watching people move right in close to my paintings/or run their hand over an area to try and read something scribbled or scraped into the paint. It always makes me smile as my marks are usually random letters and symbols but they often come up with a word or phrase that they think it says. Congrats on your move - it looks lovely! We moved to a small town over covid as well. Challenging for sure with things the way they are currently. You must be so relieved that’s behind you. I love the Ottawa area.
