Years ago when I had my shop, a customer had a case of the "dead mouse odors" in his car. I found it behind the passenger's side kick panel, babies and all. The odor was so bad that I had to get a face mask in order to finish the job. So glad Mrs O found the mouse and the idea of keeping the traps in the van is an excellent idea! Love your vids, Mr. O and in fact, I'm binge watching them now. Thanks for your time and patience. God Bless, Jeff

Nice catch Eric! Regarding the mouse in your wife's van, my wife did the same thing. She brought some plants home in the trunk and unleashed the little sucker. I had a mouse carry field corn up into the top of our Volvo's engine. He somehow got the corn into the timing belt area and dropped it down onto the crank pulley which caused the engine to jump time. After that experience, I made the best mouse trap ever by using a 5-gallon bucket with about 5" of water and drilled a hole at the top for a coat hanger. Then I drilled a hole in the center of each end of a can so it could freely spin on the hanger. I put peanut butter on the can so it was balanced and made a little ramp to the top of the bucket. Mice love peanut butter and go for it before anything else. I caught 12 mice over the next couple of weeks in my garage. Now I only get a mouse now and then. If it gets freezing cold put some anti-freeze in the bucket. I put a little bleach in the bucket as well. No smell, and you know right where the little suckers are. I've had them make nests on top of the cabin filter too...but no more. I tried sticky traps once and caught a baby bunny in one. Took me an hour to get the little fella out. He was missing a little hair but survived the ordeal. Love your auto repair videos. You are a fantastic auto mechanic. We could sure use more like you my friend. 😉

My wife complained that her car had no pep and sluggish. I opened up the air cleaner and it was packed with acorns. That same critter started filling up my car's air cleaner as well. I took a picture of it and when I find it I will send it to you. No wonder the car was sluggish. Great find! Thanks for the tip!
EXACT same thing happened to me with my 93 Mercury Grand Marquis with the 4.6. No power and stalling at stops. Pulled the MAS and it had a dandelion fluff in it, which was odd as the air filter was intact. Blew it out with compressed air and reinstalled it. Ran like a Mustang after that. Just remember the First rule of Ford: Check the MAS if it runs like A55.
Same thing happened to my Hondoo, but the mouse never went past the paper filter! She had a real nice nest built in there! I couldn't believe it was running let alone how well still!!

Last fall, we had to take out a twenty-year-old maple tree, with the stump ground...it wasn't a problem until we discovered that we had disturbed a mouse nest in the roots...and they headed (stampeded) indoors. It was *awful*. I lost count of how many we trapped, and how long they had snuck around before we discovered them. We practically sterilized the whole kitchen. Exterminator believes we finally got rid of all of them. Happy hunting to you and Mrs O to get rid of that awful vermin!! Thanks as always.

Tip : Pay attention how you put back your MAF sensor. If you put it backwards, you get problems. Usually there is an arrow, how the air must flow. Often it is fool proof, because they made it so you can only put in 1 way. But some can be installed in the wrong way.
I had a mouse claiming his residence in my 1967 Ford Fairlane 500XL. It was a battle finding him but with sweat and prayers he was defeated. There were things I tried to keep the Rodents away but could not succeed. I finally came across a product called Fresh Cab sold in the big box stores, also Rural King and Tractor Supply. It looks like a giant Tea bag and smells like a pine forest. But for $12.50 a box(4 bags per box) it does what it's advertised to do. Bags last four months but I keep them going for six. Only thing that works for me. Doesn't kill a thing, but mice take off for your neighbors garage.
Glad you were safe from the lightning. Unlike me this morning swapping out a vending machine with storms in the area. Because some mice decided to chew up the wiring in the machine. And poop and pee on the control board shorting it out. Thanks for another enjoyable video!
The Entomologist in you , Outstanding .... Marigolds don't attract critters , they repel them . FYI ( usually) Always a Great watch Mr. O Thanks for sharing .
I have a car that sits a lot, after replacing the air filter 3 times in 2 years I finally got some 1/4" mesh hardware cloth and made a plug to cover the air intake from the front. Don't know why they don't come like that.
"I'll be dipped" I love when you guys do this! Make obscure references of each other... the auto giants of TH-cam! 😁 so far its Eric, Derek, Ray and Scotty I've noticed LOL!
I know Ray does and I think Eric does too... Refer to Vehcor by saying "In the Pile" when they remove damaged parts and toss them to the side. With less than 200k subs he might not be a giant but he's pro in hid field (Auto Body and Frame) and has a real dry sarcastic sense of humor.
Happened to our RV when we were driving in heavy rain in Northern Ontario. The air filter got saturated and released a bee that got logged in the MAF orifice. It would run on the starter motor and die as soon as we released the starter. We initially thought that it was a failed fuel pump. Had we known that unplugging the MAF would have allowed us to continue we would have tried it. Anyway a $500 tow bill to the Ford dealer in Wawa. It was fixed in about an hour. Lesson learned. I switched to a K&N filter and now I carry a scan tool.
Great video as usual! Also, I was disappointed you didn't say "there's your problem lady" when you saw the filter, but you said it later, so you're still on my watch list! (The good kind, no the bad kind the government keeps!) Also, I can confirm, mices stinketh when they die. My room stank for about a year, then when we were moving 2 years after that, I found a little skeleton and fur in the corner under my bed...
As a person that grows and sells plants, mice are an issue. We had one eat all of the seeds we planted, more than once. We played nice at first, but they kept causing problems, so we had to step our game up. Its much more under control now, but I need to get the neighbors to also work on their problem.
Recently my 1996 maxima stumbled and fell on its face when accelerating from a stop. I've had this car since high school, it was my first car, I'm 35 now. But with the knowledge I've picked up from this channel I was able to diagnose it and fix it even without a check engine light on. I plugged in my autel and decided to look at live engine data and I notice the MAF sensor was flat lined. I tapped on it and it came back to life, tapped on it again and it flat lined. Thank you SMA for the great content and knowledge you provide.
@10:00 - Speaking of meeces and lightning. My old man got a 50KV mouse trap that is a bit less kind than one of those swinging steel doohickies. I highly recommend it.
There’s an HBO documentary called “lost on Long island” about the great recession in NY, anyway one of the families that was having a hard time was a young medical doctor. In the end he had to short sell his house, as he was cleaning the basement he must have rustled up some mouse droppings and contracted the hanta virus and died. Otherwise healthy athletic and maybe 40 years old.
So you had to reach back 80 years and 700 million people that have lived and died in America since then to come up with a death good job I applaud your thoroughness
@@jimhaines8370 actually the housing crash happened due to nonexistent mortgage rules and regulations during the eight years of Bush the lesser. But don’t let facts get in the way of your racist comment.
It's a little known fact that Brakleen fumes kill Hontavirus, so you're safe (and so is the rest of Avoca thanks to your shop) Never let them mice push you around, see how they are.
Welcome from the region that put hantavirus on the map! Hantavirus almost always makes the local news because it is both relatively rare and truly horrible. (No transmission human to human.) If he is not hearing about an outbreak he can save the Brakleen for more important pursuits.
Mrs. O's fishing rod tubes are a great idea! I used tubes like that to keep my popup from sagging. You could crank it up, but it would start to sag due to a balky lift mechanism. Also, since they're plastic, they don't attract lightning. One last thing about mice, although they stink, they cause a lot of damage. It cost me $700 to have a wiring harness replaced on my Torrent due to rodent ravage.
We're dealing with a fun experience in the house right now where a mouse or other small rodent died in one of our HVAC ducts. I think I tracked it down to a localized area but my endo broke and I can't get another one until tomorrow. I just told the wife to close the vents and hold her nose!
I do find it interesting the problems you find here. My car issues are so simple the diagnostic is easy. The brake pedal sinks to the floor, that is the master brake cylinder. The power window does not work, the motor was shot. Noise is coming from the rear wheels, the wheel bearings were going. The car shakes on the highway, the front struts were shot. All these problems were found quickly and easily on my Subaru and all happened in the last 6000 miles (between 120,000 and 126,000 miles) and I never had a problem before these four concerns. Now that it is all repaired, the car works like new again. I can only hope my problems stay this simple but if they don't perhaps Eric's videos help. Thank you for them.
@10:33 Don't be fooled by the steel cage deterring mice. I've seen them chew through screening, aluminum flashing and plastic pipes. It's one of the ways that they wear down their fast growing front teeth.
Used to live in upstate NY and had a 68 912 Porsche that only went out in the summer (5-1/2 months). Every spring had to remove the mouse family that would move in for the long (5-1/2 months) of Winter. I always enjoyed the 2 weeks of spring and the 2 weeks of fall. Best time to visit NY!!
My girlfriends Mitsubishi would do the same thing. Start then die, couldn't give it any throttle. Disconnected the MAF and it started. Pulled it, cleaned it, problem solved. Eric you have really upped my diagnostic game and it has really helped me. I hope Mrs. O finds her critter and don't fly a kite with a key on the string when it's raining!!!!
People bring their cars to you, either because they don't know how to fix it or they don't want to fix it. You run a business, so no one should ever criticize you for charging someone.
You have the wisdom of experience Eric! I never would have thought it would be something so simple. I would have thought a stuck-open fuel injector or a bad fuel pressure regulator/sensor.
Worked on a customers car had a decomposed rat in the back. Customer is a horse person interior of her car looked like a barn. She did apologize for having such a dirty car. Great job. Keep up the good work!
Eric your exactly what men with common sense do!! Start at the easiest scenario and move from there. I’m sure younger less experienced mechanics would have it hooked up all over the place? Glad Mrs. O’s sunflower thief is bagged and tagged!! They do wreak havoc! Stay safe yourself and low on cloudy days😏🥺🥺⚡️⚡️
For 28 years I worked on Honda motorcycles (primarily GoldWings). When the GL1800's came out we immediately found the owners that lived in the 'country' had mouse problems getting into their air filter. I solved the problem by putting screen over the 2 air intakes. Pop rivets held the screen on.....and no more mouse problems.
I have had several mouse/rat related car problems. They like to chew wires. A rat in your house can cause thousands of dollars in damage quickly. Bought professional rat and mouse bait and set up bait stations all around my house. Made a huge difference. I sometimes see a dead rat or mouse but nothing more than that. Poison is a good investment.
The “ change oil light” was a bit of a clue as to the frequency of maintenance being performed. Anyone that thinks, well that was an easy fix so you shouldn’t charge never owned a business. You are more than entitled to be paid for your time and knowledge. An inexperienced mechanic may have worked for hours before finding that problem. Mice in your car is the cost of living in Gods country. I spent many summers living on a small farm between Savona and Bath NY 60 years ago. Lake Keuka was a favorite spot.
Anyone who thinks he shouldn't charge for the repair, should have fixed it them selves. The car wasn't taken to South Main Auto because the owner knew what was wrong or they would have fixed it themselves.
be careful outdoors: stay safe from the lightning. be careful indoors: put on a respirator and gloves when cleaning after rodents. (I live in a part of Texas where hantavirus does occur.)
Another a great video. What a lot of people do not realize, is that damage done by a rodent to a vehicle is covered under automobile comprehensive insurance. In upstate NY, this coverage is relatively inexpensive, and lower deductibles should be considered. Besides rodent damage, comprehensive covers you if you hit a deer or if a rock breaks your glass. You are even covered for flood or a tree falling on your car. It would not be worth putting for the repair on this video. .But for more costly repairs it most definitely would. Moreover you can also utilize your rental reimbursement coverage. If you put a claim in, you may lose your free discount, but you would not be surcharged for the claim.
Your exactly right to charge. Had a washing machine guy come to fix a washer that wouldn't drain. He fixed it in about 60 seconds by pulling a sock out that was stuck in the drain of the washtub. I paid for his knowledge, and it was well worth it.
Mr. O, don't eat yellow snow, and don't carry around a long piece of copper..... Glad she got the mouse. I have a 2010 Escape. Runs well at the moment. I inherited it from mom. I use it as a commute car to work and back (25 miles round trip). It's got the big 2.5. It's only got 72,*** miles! One thing about the Napa part number, you forgot to say "it's the classic 2793." At work, we used the sticky pad traps (owners wife doesn't like the poisons), one of the traps is flat gone! Stepped on 'er and took off! Been looking for a mouse with a big white shoe! Watch for lightening my good fellow!

Another great video and straight to the point. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. Humble and smart people are a blessing, and Mrs. O always has a great attitude. I would charge the customer whether it was simple or complicated. You are still taking time to fix the issue.
Nice work as always. I bet the customer will be happy to pay for your repair. Diagnostic and repair time plus an air filter will be inexpensive compared to what it could have been. I hope the lightning stays away!!! Looking forward to the follow up on the mouse.
Eric is correct. Unplug a MAF sensor if you think it's giving you issues. On a typical weather day (temp and barometer-wise) and at sea level, a Ford will run like new without the MAF connected. Of course, it will never get to closed loop and it won't run right with less than ideal weather or altitudes and it will also light the CEL.
We don’t have rodent issues much here in my area. My wife and I did lose a formula bottle one time in the car, man I can still smell it 10 years later. I actually numbered all the bottles and made sure I had every one accounted for before we went to bed.
One year we had a smell start permeating the part of the house adjacent to our unheated (but attached) garage as spring came. Took me most of a weekend to systematically search most of the garage to find a nest of mother mouse and her babies (all dead) nested in the insulation of the service panel of our “beverage” fridge. Oh the smell was horrendous, as you said, considering the small size of the offenders.

FYI ( usually)
Always a Great watch Mr. O Thanks for sharing .
I have a car that sits a lot, after replacing the air filter 3 times in 2 years I finally got some 1/4" mesh hardware cloth and made a plug to cover the air intake from the front. Don't know why they don't come like that.
"The super hi-flo air filter." I love it. so that engine was sucking in air-filter fuzz. LOL
Don't forget Watch Wes Work, he'll sneak Eric O. comments in his videos too. Another great channel by a diagnostic genius!
Don't forget Ivan. No parts required!
Don’t forget “AvE”… tappy tap tap , and the fake torque wrench. “Click”. 🤣
Eh, I don't think Ray and Scotty should make this list
Mrs O is so funny and quite the looker as well
Eric
you’re a genius
and
thanks for another wonderful video
Like most…. It took a lot of years of boo boo’s to cut to the chase ! Those were the years of no video’s….. right Eric !
(The good kind, no the bad kind the government keeps!)
Also, I can confirm, mices stinketh when they die. My room stank for about a year, then when we were moving 2 years after that, I found a little skeleton and fur in the corner under my bed...
Also, don't get either virus (from the mouse or the East)!
when you said eric is still on your watch list it could have sounded a bit stalkery lol
@@cornishcat11 re reading it, it sounds more like I'm the FBI or something LOL
The last time I shopped for mouse traps I bought eight of them just like Mrs. O. Know the feeling. Thanks for Sharing!
Hope you stay safe from that lightning Eric and family! 😂
I remember that documentary and talk about crash and burn nothing went right for those people at all
So you had to reach back 80 years and 700 million people that have lived and died in America since then to come up with a death good job I applaud your thoroughness
@@deepsquat600 The documentary was during the wall street crash in the late 2000's not the 1930's it was set when obamy was in charge

@@jimhaines8370 Just to be accurate, the Wall Street crash of 2008 occurred under Dubya's watch.
Eric, be careful any time you're walking outside..... THE LIGHTNING, Just be careful of the lightning! lol. 😂
Steel wool will stop them
@@GreenAppelPie your right,,, for some reason ! LOL
Stay safe and watch out for lightning! Wondering how much air filter the engine ingested ?
You’d be surprised what a engine can chew up!
I don't love you but my cat does stay safe from lightning ⚡🙂
I don't love you but my cats do stay safe from lightning ⚡☺️
My girlfriends Mitsubishi would do the same thing. Start then die, couldn't give it any throttle. Disconnected the MAF and it started. Pulled it, cleaned it, problem solved. Eric you have really upped my diagnostic game and it has really helped me. I hope Mrs. O finds her critter and don't fly a kite with a key on the string when it's raining!!!!
People bring their cars to you, either because they don't know how to fix it or they don't want to fix it. You run a business, so no one should ever criticize you for charging someone.
It's simple he's in business and time is money he's not ripping people off that's the main thing have a good day
You have the wisdom of experience Eric!
I never would have thought it would be something so simple. I would have thought a stuck-open fuel injector or a bad fuel pressure regulator/sensor.
Then you go to the bathroom & think…. Hm…….. let’s use the K. I.S.S. method ! Aha! there’s the dang problem ! LOL
I always wonderd why air filters had metal grills.
"Bagged and tagged?" LOL
Thanks for coming in today Fella 🤙
Becareful out there!!
For 28 years I worked on Honda motorcycles (primarily GoldWings). When the GL1800's came out we immediately found the owners that lived in the 'country' had mouse problems
getting into their air filter. I solved the problem by putting screen over the 2 air intakes. Pop rivets held the screen on.....and no more mouse problems.
Any ?
I have had several mouse/rat related car problems. They like to chew wires. A rat in your house can cause thousands of dollars in damage quickly. Bought professional rat and mouse bait and set up bait stations all around my house. Made a huge difference. I sometimes see a dead rat or mouse but nothing more than that. Poison is a good investment.
would recommending an oil change be something to consider for the customer, or was it running rich for just a very short period
Dash message said "oil change required".
That could just be that it wasn't reset since the last oil change, they don't reset themselves.
Good to see Mrs. O
Their everywhere,,,,, everywhere….sleep with rubber boots on with masking tape on the top ! Shows our age! LOL
@@frotobaggins7169 10- fur on that !
Great to see Mrs O and her Van adventures.
be careful outdoors: stay safe from the lightning. be careful indoors: put on a respirator and gloves when cleaning after rodents. (I live in a part of Texas where hantavirus does occur.)
I will say be careful and don’t get struck by lighting and always wear your seatbelt! Keep up the videos!
Thanks Eric for the download 'that's your problem lady' keep your mice and mayflies away from your car 😮👍👍
Mrs. O on the hunt, that should be a video all on it’s own. Can’t wait for the result !
Look out! Mrs O is setting up her trap line! Old micky doesn't stand a chance! You go girl!
Great video, Eric. And you and Mrs O be safe and don't get hit by lightning. Lol
Sometimes it not what you do that you charge for, it's the knowledge that you have acquired to know what to do that you have to charge for.
Your exactly right to charge. Had a washing machine guy come to fix a washer that wouldn't drain. He fixed it in about 60 seconds by pulling a sock out that was stuck in the drain of the washtub. I paid for his knowledge, and it was well worth it.
That air box halarious and Mrs. O such a goody !
Eric and Mrs O with the Kia!! I just recently purchased a Kia and couldn’t be happier.
Always nice to see Mrs. O.
Hello oh I've missed your witty sense of humor! Hope all is well with fam. Watch out for lightning and idiots on the road. You may not have as many there as we do here in AZ. love your videos keep them coming. That customer will be thrilled you didnt have to replace the fuel system...lol! Stay safe stay happy. Love from AZ ❤🙋♀️🌞
Always good when Mrs. O makes an appearance
Its really something that so many people dont bother to check the most basic things before having their car towed to a shop.
Another great one Eric, these are like therapy, always feel better after watching.
Glad to see the sarcasm is back along with your humor. I don't understand the comments why you wouldn't charge. It's a service you provide. Anyway... welcome back...... (the humorous Eric O!!)
THANK YOU 🙏 Eric!! for helping me improve our income 👨👦
The Escape barely ran before, runs like a top now, and the price was modest. Life is good!
Thanks eric for all the kid bits And the Mouse
One year we had a smell start permeating the part of the house adjacent to our unheated (but attached) garage as spring came. Took me most of a weekend to systematically search most of the garage to find a nest of mother mouse and her babies (all dead) nested in the insulation of the service panel of our “beverage” fridge. Oh the smell was horrendous, as you said, considering the small size of the offenders.
Hi guy. Big o here from east TX... just wanted to let you know how much I love your videos and how much I've learned from them. I'm a 30 year otr driver vet and watching you sure let's me know the duct tape and baling wire days are gone. Thanks so much for your videos and keep up the great work..
