It's weird to think that these kids had no idea who spongebob was while they were singing this.

Kid 3 carried the whole intro.
Super true
FACTS
Agreed
True, he was probably the oldest of the three given his enunciation is correct. Kid 2 is most likely a young girl somewhat older than Kid 1, who was probably around 5-6 years old. Kids 1 & 2 deal ok with the opening cries but naturally have difficulty pronouncing the fairly difficult to pronounce name of the yet unknown to them main character.

I definitely hear kid 3 the most in the complete theme, but shoutout to kid 1 who just so confidently shouted “SQUASHBOP” 😭

The fact that the kids in the intro are now all adults, yet STILL being used in the intro just shows how long SpongeBob has been going on for. (25 years in about a week!)

kid 3: absolutely enthused and had so much passion. absolutely carried, he did not come to play. diction was top notch. 10/10 kid 3 deserves an oscar.
Bribed with a cookie 😂 absolutely correct possibly lol
Or they were forced to be there. Like every kid forced to go to theater class by their parents. 😆
Kid 2 was revealed to be the daughter of Tuck Tucker (he worked on lots of 90s Nicktoons, most notably Hey Arnold). She posted on Reddit how she only got included in the theme because she was at the studio at the time and they asked her if she wanted to record the theme to the then unknown Nicktoon. She said how there were about 15 kids in a room yelling (and I think Patrick Pinney was also there). She said it was kind of weird to be shouting a bizarre name of a character nobody knew about at the time. She also said how she didn’t really talk to the other kids because their parents were forcing them to successful acting careers and “she was just lucky to be in the studio”. She was 8 at the time.
shout out to kid 1 who confidently shouted "SQUASHBOB SQUARE PAS!"
Every variation of the theme song after this, the kids sound like well behaved choir kids.
I swear, in the original theme, you can tell the kids in the recording booth were directed to loosely read the lyrics and scream their heads off. And this just proves it
Wait they changed the kids?
@@magmamusic2348 They meant like every time they had to recreate the theme for a gag (like the Squidward, Patrick & Krabs variants in Truth or Square), but yeah. They probably either couldn’t get the same kids or those said kids got older since the original recording.

@@ilan_profile I'm not an audio engineer or anything but I like listening to rap stems and that happens all the time in those
is that not just the original audio that happens to still be slightly audible, just because it’s impossible to completely separate the noises perfectly
@hybridmagz I don't think they used an algo to get these stems, I think they're legit the original "project file". Some of the sounds would be too similar in frequency and would bleed into each other, especially the kids' voices. It's possible the algorithm stuff has gotten better though, but I don't think that's what was used here.
@@hybridmagz usually you can hear the instrumental people are recording over playing in their headphones which gets picked up by the mic.
Incredible! I would love to know how this was done 👁👁

Fun Fact: The 3 kids who sing the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song are Devin Johnson, Sara Paxton, and Camryn Walling. Sadly they’re not credited for their roles in the theme song, probably due to privacy concerns from their parents at the time in 1998, but they were credited in the season 1 episode, The Paper. Out of those 3 kids, only 2 would become series regulars, Sara Paxton and Camryn Walling, with Sara getting the most voice roles in the first 3 seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants. Sara’s career consisting of episodes like Scaredy Pants, The Paper, Christmas Who?, Shanghaied, Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy 4, Born Again Krabs, Mid Life Crustacean, Krabby Land, and The Sponge Who Could Fly, while Camryn only had 2 episodes, all being from season one for him, those being Scaredy Pants, and The Paper. As of 2024, those 3 kids who sang the theme song are pretty much adults now, probably either in their 20s or their 30s, but it’s fascinating how far the show has come in the past 25 years, including its cast of iconic characters and voice actors.
Very cool!! 🤩🤩 they deserve the credit, they nailed it!!
I thought the theme was recorded in early 1999 and the intro they used for 1998 was the one used for the 1997
Does anyone know the exact date this theme was recorded? (Or at least the year?)
@@Isabelle-qq2yu"The theme song sequence was produced in the middle of season 1, and it was given its own production code: "127," meaning the 27th segment made for season one; the production code was shared with a new version of the pilot episode, "Help Wanted," which included a different title card among other minor tweaks. The pilot was originally made without a production code and with an entirely different title sequence."

You can tell that they used live instruments. Because if they used MIDI instruments, they would’ve sounded like something you would hear on a low-end Casio keyboard.
Not really some arranger and composer keyboards by yamaha roland and technics have amazing sounds
The bass is definitely without a doubt midi. Most companies usually use very high end sound libraries, which utilize a midi system but allow you to make adjustments to make it sound as realistic as possible (which also means there was a CRAZY amount of. Samples recorded so additionally it takes up boat loads of computer storage)
With that being said, I am absolutely sure that a few of these probably WERE live recorded.

Yes, she confirmed it on Reddit
It’s wild listening to the drum part and realizing that it’s a pretty straightforward rhythm. When you layer the flute and the accordion on top of it it makes you think that the song is swung when it’s really not.
What’s interesting to me is that you can hear the kids take a breath before an apricot cut on of the final “SpongeBob SquarePants” of the song, which makes me think that they had the kids sing the final “SpongeBob SquarePants” with Painty, then decided to cut it out later. Interesting stuff!
That or they wanted to trick kids into singing along by anticipating it.
@@BungieStudios Ooh, that’s interesting! Though, I’m not sure that’s the case, cause I’m the final mix you can’t hear it at all. It could’ve been planned when recording but never implemented though!
@@sunkenknightmusicI can hear a very very slight cut off of Kid 2 saying "Sp-" so I think you're right
inb4 this video gets screwed over, but I'm taking it upon myself to give a lengthy analysis of the instrumental.
Based on all 6 stems, the drums, bass and guitar (the first 2 being the most prominent) follow a straight 4/4 rhythm. This captures the vibes suitable for an upbeat kids show.
On the other hand, the accordion, mandolin, and penny whistle follow a 6/8 triplet rhythm on the main beat (with the exception of the chorus playing in 4/4 instead). These instruments are common in sea shanties and folk music, typical in the show's repertoire; which combined with the rhythm, signifies that it's not just some ordinary kids' show, but also an adventure in the depths of the ocean.
As the two groups are layered together, the triplet-playing, pirate-like instruments are played earlier than the first 3 instruments by a slight amount. This creates a lax and quirky rhythm that fits the silly and carefree tone of the show.
In other words, they were cooking with this track. 🙃
Edit: I also like how the penny whistle only accents the roots and fifths when it comes to the c major parts of the theme.
love the music theory
I noticed that it was offbeat too and thought it was very clever how they pulled that off!
Offbeats are tricky for me, they’re so confusing.

“SQUASHBOH SQUAIRMPUS”
"AYE AYE CAPTAIN" just ain't the same without Kid 3 💀 Bro carries that
Which kid sold?
Yeah but Kid 1 IS THE SONG
@@entdoesstuff kid 1 sold. He said squashbomb SquarePants.
Kid 3 is carrying, but kid 1 is superior…
@@REALmilkbread Aight aight 😪 You right, my man
7:37 captain, its been 19 years since the kids died. you need to forget. the boat trip was too long ago.

😱
on this day, 25 years ago. 5/1/1999
a legend was born.
Someone please tell me I'm not the only grown ass adult this made tear up lmao
The fact you were able to get every instrument and voices separated is unbelievable, this is awesome work, i wonder if you can do other shows
There was a Nickelodeon data leak and there were 2 audio files of the theme song with different tracks for each instrument/vocals
Shoutout to the kids and painty for participating in this iconic theme song, thanks for the childhood memories
4:35 My Favorite
Who is here after SpongeBob just turned 25 today ?
Me!
Ong just painty sounds like, he was abandoned
Kid 3 absolutely nailed it ngl. Also RIP Google Drive link LOL
Never noticed some of these instruments playing until i found this video, thanks for making it
Especially the guitar, it was fantastic
It's so trippy to hear every instrument after all of them are isolated and then out back together. I appreciate that I can actually hear each instrument doing its thing. Especially that iconic penny whistle.
Hearing the instruments, Painty, and especially the 3 kids separately feels like I’m literally in the room with them.
I’ll never be able to unhear “squashbob SquarePants”
Kid 3 is really cooking with fire 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥
How?! This should get more popular!
Nick gigaleak
yep.
Hearing the individual stems after having heard the original so many times makes for a surreal experience.
Even at 23 years old, I feel like I could shamelessly watch the first few seasons. The show makes me feel right at home.
Shout out to the bass accordion, penny flute and kid 3, carried the whole intro
I was expecting this to be some essay about the theme song
But I’m not disappointed
The extra "stage" audio of Kid 1 is such a gem! Reminds me of the Michael Jackson stems where you can hear him physically dancing around and tapping his foot 😂
This is awesome! Deconstruction videos like this always interests me, it helps me learn what musicians use to make their songs sound so good. I didn’t even think there would be one for the SpongeBob theme song! Thanks for sharing this! I’ll bet people are going to go crazy with the separated audio, lol
Oh hi, didn't expect to see you here!
7:38 Deaf Painty:"ARE YA READY KIDS? *silence* "I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" *m o r e silence*
I never in my life would expect a beat breakdown of the SpongeBob theme, however I am glad we got it 💀
Never in my life did I think I would hear all these separately! Thanks for this video!
This is actually so amazing. It's so surreal and baffling that this actually exists
I’m curious as to how those kids are now as I wonder if they even remember singing this during the making
It sounds like kid 2 or kid 3 is Gina Tucker. Gina Tucker was claimed to be part of the SpongeBob SquarePants by herself.
More likely Kid 2 since that one sounds more feminine
@@saulgzazueta You're right, Kid 2 would actually be Gina Tucker.
Kid 2 sounds the most like a girl
Kid 2 was the daughter of Tuck Tucker (idk her first name)
@@Isabelle-qq2yu it's Gina.
Bro Kid 3 just knows he’ll be broadcast to millions someday.
This is more than wonderful, I really appreciate the intro of the series, but with this video...
Oh my God!!! I appreciate it even more, each instrumental, voices and SFX are so appropriate and combine both individually and together, I really love the passion that Stephen had and how he shows it in every little detail ❤
aww dude kid 3 you can hear the audio coming through his headphones 😭
i have heard the spongebob theme song maybe hundreds or thousands of times and i had NO idea there was a guitar or drums in the song. Let alone the fact that they are played SO straight compared to the accordian and penny whistle, which have such a strong and defined syncopation. It's an insane piece of composition. No wonder this show was great, even the fine tuned details are complex
13:51 "Ooh.. 😩😩" 💀💀💀💀💀
3:43 the classic Penny Whistle solo
15:14 When I was in JROTC back in high school, the Command Sergeant Major made us (by that I mean the whole battalion) sing the SpongeBob theme song while he took the role of Painty. This part is exactly what it we did and what it reminded me of.
kid 1: aye aye captain aye aye captain
also kid one: oohh
I never realized it before, but there’s a pretty obvious hemiola in the song. The drums, guitar, and bass are all in duple, while accordion, pan flute, and voice, are all in triple.
It’s so cute how you can hear the instrumental (+painty) in the background while the kids are singing their parts!
13:54
its so crazy how i can still hear the kid who said "SQUANCH BOP SQUAREPANTS" 😭😭
9:17, you can actually hear Kid 1 going, “Oooooh!” quietly. I think he was saying Painty’s line.
Oh, I didn't think of it like that.
This brings a whole new nautical experience to the already iconic theme song! Each instrument is a whole new world (didn't even knew there were DRUMS in there!) and the fact the vocals were Painty and three kids rather than an entire audience is absolutely remarkable! This is just incredible, HAPPY 25th Anniversary SpongeBob!!!
Also that first kid, wanting to take over Painty's solo and SQUASHBOB SQUAREPANTS are massive highlights!
9:17 kid1: ᵒ
thanks, now i'm never gonna be able to unhear that one kid saying "squashbob squarepants"
