That's Herb Kohler, not an actor, but Owner and CEO of the Kohler Company, makers of bathroom and home products. He and Costner were good friends and he told Costner he wanted to be in the movie and asked to either ride a horse or shoot a gun. Mr. Kohler passed away, September, 2022. RIP, Herb......a wonderful man.

The thing about most movies is the audiences. Most cannot put themselves into a mindset of the era. People think we're cruel today. Try thinking back to the 12th century or either side of it. IF you can think for any moment, then you would realize that 'evil' people will do whatever they feel they need to do. On the other end, 'good' people think a compassionate tone or word will stop any bad acts of the evil doer. Not in the least. And it's the main reason why we have so much violent crime today. The violent person will abuse the 'good intent' of others to their advantage. As said, the only way to prevent repetitive crime is to destroy the perpetrator first chance.

Not to be rude but this was released in 2003. Not old but still a good western.
Want good old westerns you’ll have to look back a bit for those made in the 60s, 70s & 80s.
Clint Eastwood made some of the best western movies or “spaghetti westerns” as it were since they were made in Europe or more specific, Italy in the 60s.
Now as for western TV shows of that era there was “the rifleman”, “gun smoke” & “Bonanza” just to name a few.
I grew up on all those old westerns.
There are some really good ones made in the 90s like “tombstone “, “the quick & the dead” & another of Eastwoods called “Unforgiven”.
After the turn of the century say after 2010 a remake of “ the magnificent seven” is really good w Denzel Washington. Then a Tarantino western called “the hateful eight”. Of course he puts a good Tarantino spin on it as w all his movies.
Robert Duval & Kevin Costner are really good actors who make this movie.
Costner has had his own w “Wyatt Earp”, “dances w wolves” & “the Hatfield & McCoys” to name a few.
I hope you’ve seen some of these if not give them a try. They’re quite enjoyable

True. I wouldn't call it old though. Western movies, modern or classic portrays men who display traditional masculine qualities, especially fighting to protect the weak and valuing their principles as much as their life. They were rough and tough like leather, men wanted to be like them and women wanted them.
I know I probably caused an aneurysm in lefties reading this, but hey, thats a bonus.

Except for "The Quick and the Dead", this is the stupidest western made since about 1965. I say this even though I'm a huge Costner fan. The plot made no sense, and the love interest was somewhere between boring and inane.
