    This is super valuable advice. Students for instance aren’t writing those sometimes until the fourth year when they’re applying for post grad situations. Writing that artist’s statement can clarify my own position on my work…as well as a jumping off point for conversations, but as a former copy-writer, it’s the equivalent of the blurb on the back of a book-jacket, or the ad copy for a concert or product. It would make sense to have a few versions of it prepared: elevator pitch, friendly conversation, something for written material, something easy to say, etc. I had a mentor in business who would ask: what’s the most important thing? I’m going to focus on that for my statement. Thanks!

    Ja - I find your presentation in these videos quite delightful - Teaching AND marketing without being pushy or smarmy - nice balance
    And the idea of a hook is really cool
    Robert Middleton interviewed someone who spoke about a "String of Pearls" - like your idea of "The Hook"
    And you put it nicely here
    I like to hear how you have thought about what you are trying to do in your and how you translate this into your hook
    It is about knocking people out of their "Power-Stress" position to create a temporary relationship
    OK - and I understand now - your questions can take people gently down the path to a deeper area where they can begin to understand what you understand about your art
    I have also found that hosting my own exhibition I have heard comments about my art that have been helpful in creating my statement and some of the hooks I can apply to my elevator pitch

    I like to travel and my favorite thing to paint is a moment, not just a pretty landscape, a tired boy at the state fair, or the local sheriff eating in a diner. Something that conveys a story of the place we are visiting.

    I am an Arizona cowgirl who loves to draw and paint horses and other figures in magical landscapes.
    Have you ever desired to be a cowgirl or cowboy having adventures in the American Southwest?
    I want to share that experience when you have one of my paintings in your home.

      Sounds great. I would suggest to convert that into a question. For example, Do you feel sometimes that God is in the beauty of the universe? Something that can engage the audience. Check out the samples: www.theartistnextlevel.com/artstatementhook

      @melodyhawtin6476 As a curator, potential patron or grant application reviewer I would question what perspective or tradition does this artist mean by "God"? Not everyone believes in a God or has the same concept of "God" or cares... Maybe rephase to "the presence of the Divine"... Then my next question or expectation after hearing your hook would be to hear what style and medium(s) you paint in?

    My hook: my art represents beautiful color and a sense of calm. Add a color spot to an empty wall and feel the calming and colorful effects it will have on the room.

      Not a question...it shoudl be something that INVOLVES THEM....How about "have you ever noticed perhaps in nature- a color that you just thought was beautiful in that moment maybe you felt calm as you noticed the color? Well my work...."

      I don't understand how you would represent color? Isn't it actually just color? It doesn't symbolize color. Maybe you express calm with the use of color?

    My work is about holding space for the inner child and healing broken pieces. Have you ever felt like there is a part of you that never grew up and still needs reassurance? That is what I paint

    OMG...BRILLIANT folks will think you are paying me...but honestly if your work is about ideaas and not "decorative" then this is brilliant, find a question that brings them closer to understanding the topic/feelings/ideas our work is about. QUESTION: I got your PDF- it seems like the question should come first right to engage them- THEN do the elevator pitch- once they are open....?

    • @sergiogomezart
      @sergiogomezart  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question. Th nice thing about giving the one liner elevator pitch is that it introduces your art idea of art first. Then the question brings your art philosophy down to earth so that you give the person time to answer. Otherwise the question may feel akward without context. But, hey give it a try and do whatever works best for you. There are no rules. :).

    Most often these statements are more creative than the art.

  • @claudialaurendeau2865
    @claudialaurendeau2865 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Interesting. You always hear about finding your artistic voice, your own unique style. But, if the person doesn't SEE your work then how do you explain WHAT you are creating and WHY. Why do you do what you do? Sure it's because you want to, you enjoy doing it. BUT why this subject matter, this process, this genre. How to get your art across verbally where someone wants to see it is a challenge for sure? These are the things someone else might find interesting and cause them to ask where they might see it. Thanks

      Sergio said alot more than "just create your own hook". I guess you were too busy thinking up ways to troll him than to actually listen to what he was saying.
