      @@darrellslover6834 It's definitely not. It's an el cheapo piece of junk replica somebody sold at a flea market and this poor guy uses it to critique Gil Hibben knives. Pretty cringe. Seems to have quite a bit of trouble operating a pair of pliers in the video so I'm questioning his ability to judge the knifemaking ability of legendary custom knifemakers.

      It's all about the construction. Master makes one of the best full-tang chopper knives out, with 440C steel - look up the Raptor. Nice Micarta handle, too. Yes, Master has a lot of junk... but every so often they throw in some quality models.

    • @Broddi169

      Master cutlery and United cutlery both have the tang. Knives made in Gil Hibben classes have the same tang.

    • @pipewelda
      @pipewelda 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember, you get what you pay for! If you purchase a knife through Gil Hibbens website, you’re going to get a good quality knife. This shit that you are showing us was MORE THEN LIKELY made in a CHINA! Gil Hibben has his knives made in large quantities by a cutlery company. The name escapes me!

      @@pipewelda ////United Cutlery too...Maybe they are the same company? Some of the Hibben laser-etch signed knives produced by United Cutlery have 7cr17mov or 7cr13 steel. And if you get one that’s full tang, such as the Hibben Combat Fighter knife, what could fail? Love that knife design! The man was at the top of his game the day he laid out that knife design....I personally think that if the U.S. military were to adopt a more modern knife design, the Combat Fighter should be it. Pairs up well with an AR-15.

    First off, Gil Hibben didn't design the First Blood or even First Blood part 2 knives. The First Blood was designed by Jimmy Lile. The second was inspired by the first. Second didn't you think that's why the knife was at a flea market to begin with? Most flea markets sell junk. I have a Rambo 3 knife with a ticket of authenticity and have taken it apart and it looks nothing like that. The tang is much thicker and no welds. Third, that's not a tack weld. It's a forge weld (chemical weld) which is stronger. These knives are meant to be more of a collector piece, not to abuse by chopping down a tree. I use mine for display and an occasional knife to cut old shirts. Stays sharp. I've never sharpened it in the 10 years I had it

      There are many kinds of knives of with different purposes. All my knives are fighting knives. I dont used that to cut bushes, Wood. I prefer using bolo for wood.
      Rambo 3 knife is a fighting knife. Stabbing, slashing, cutting. Not wood chopping or any utility knife. Otherwise the lifespan of the knife will be shorter

  • @jamesaritchie1

    It's hard to be kind when someone makes as many completely goofy statements as you make in this one video. In the first place, you never use a knife to do the job of a machete unless you're at least two bricks shy of a load. More like two hundred bricks shy of a load.
    In the second place, that is not a rattail. There are several terms for that kind of tang, but rattail is not one of the. It's just a cheap hidden tang, and Gil Hibben did not even design that part of the knife. He made the design for the blade, and the cheap company that used the design added the cheapest tang imaginable to the blade design.
    In the third place, you lose a bunch more bricks for think this is actually a Gil Hibben knife at all, in any way. It isn't. It's a dirt cheap knife, made from dirt cheap Chinese steel, by a dirt cheap company, and you should have known what you were getting. But I suppose someone who would use a Bowie knife as a machete can't be expected to know much of anything. Even today, very few things from China are what they pretend to be, and this includes knife steel. You almost never get the steel a knife is supposed to be made of, you just get the Chinese approximation of that steel, which is usually pretty bad. What that knife was made, everything from China was pure garbage, and Gil Hibben had nothing to do with any product that came from China.
    In the fourth place, how in God's name could you not tell this knife was a cheap Chinese fake just by looking at it? And as soon as you picked it up, the weight, the grip, the pommel, the guards, and especially that that little pommel screw should have screamed EXTREMELY CHEAP FAKE!
    In the fifth place, you could have learned all of this by doing five minutes of real research.
    In the sixth place, I don't care how cheap a knife is, using old pliers to take off a nut means you are as far from knife knowledgeable as it's possible to get. But we knew that when you actually thought this was a Gil Hibben knife. Or when you actually thought this knife was worth more than two dollars.

      Under no circumstances should you ever use a Bowie knife or any fixed blade knife for clearing brush, I'm sure that's what he intended to say! Just as a machete would be inappropriate for shucking clams, a Bowie knife is not on the list of choices for yard work I.e. Brunch clearing, tree trimming. However the aforementioned machete is very well suited for this type of work . It is too bad there wasn't the appropriate level of supervision on hand to intercede on his very poor and possibly fatal choice of implements for this task. What father has not instructed his adolescent offspring to trim the shrubs and trees, then came outside only to be horrified by his child's choice of instruments, for the task. This is clearly what isee has happened here. Wrong tool for the task! Chalk it up as a learning experience and you'll be none the worse for ware. Good day to you fine sir.

It is not to say that it isn't a cool piece to display, just not meant for cutting down trees and other normal things. Gil Hibbins designed the Rambo III knife. Believe it or not, you can still buy a quality Jimmy Lile Rambo I and II reproduction knife that is actually meant to be used. They go for $2k+, but at the end of the day, that is what was really used in the films. Beware of those who make fancy claims in the areas of bolt cutting and piercing silver dollars. If you want to cut a bolt get yourself a chisel. If you desire to punch holes in a few silver dollars you will find a drill press does a much smoother job. It is true that any good piece of steel can be sharpened to an edge that will do these things, however, a knife sharpened to skin a deer or elk will not make a satisfactory chisel or punch. - Gil Hibben (From his first catalog, 1964)

    I also need to correct you with some FACTS. For a start, Stallone had collected many of Gil Hibben's HANDMADE knives for years, before he approached Gil Hibben, to make the Rambo III knife back in 1986, for the movie. Stallone wanted the blade to look like Gil Hibben's Coffin Handle Bowie. With some twoing and throwing, between Gil Hibben and Stallone, they came up with the handle shape that we all know today. You have incorrectly stated that the knife you are showing is one of Gil Hibben's handmade knives, which is incorrect. Gil Hibben, allowed United Cutlery to make a slightly scaled down mass produced copy, so that the fans of the movie, who couldn't afford a hand made knife could have one. These mass produced factory made knives were NEVER intended to be manufactured for hard use, and were manufactured for display purposes, or for light use. The craftsmanship and materials that Gil Hibben uses for his handmade version, will take a lot of hard use, but everything has a breaking point! You can purchase a set of Snap-On tools, but if you abuse the hell out of them, they will eventually break and fail, that is common sense. Gil Hibben has made handmade knives for over 40 years, and has been recognised and given many awards, for his craft. Here is an analogy for you, I could go out tomorrow and buy a cheap knock-off Rolex watch, and a few weeks or months later, the internals will stop working, or the strap will break! A more expensive original Rolex however, is made by professionals, with top of the range materials, and should last a lifetime, if however, something fails, which is not due to abuse, it will be covered on the lifetime warranty.... So you get what you pay for I am afraid....You buy a mass produced factory replica from a flea market, that is solely intended for display purposes, do not expect it to hold up, like a handmade knife would....

    Absolutely amazing. What resources did you use to verify that this is an authentic Hibben? The person you got it from at the flea market? On the upside thanks for the entertainment value of your vid. BTW, probably not just the "Makers of this knife," that should be prosecuted. The late Jimmy Lile made the first two Rambo movie knives. Gil Hibben made the Rambo 3 and Rambo 4 movie knives. That United Cutlery knife you have there is a factory made replica, NOT a hand made Hibben knife. These Chinese factory knives are primarily display wall hangers, and are not really designed for hard use. A real Hibben handmade would last a lifetime, even with hard use.

    Man, you have got to use the right tool for the job. Get a wrench. Don't use pliers to turn a bolt or nut like that... Also, I don't believe that knife was made to be used as a machete, get a machete... Finally, that thing was made in China (fairly certain Gil Hibben isn't Chinese), you probably paid less than $100 for it (or you got ripped off), so what did you expect?

    My friend, you make the statements many times "I'm not sure if that's coming up or not" or "I don't know if you can see this". I have a question. Did you watch your own video before you uploaded it to TH-cam? Did it "come up" and could you "see it"? No, you can't. I'm sorry to critcize but that's extremely shoddy camera work.
    If you watched the video, you could see for yourself that things weren't showing up. Any reason you couldn't move the camera closer or better lighting or re-shoot the entire video or whataever? You didn't. You just posted this junk and hoped for the best. Plus, that's not a Gil Hibben knife, it's a cheap replica. Are you considering a video where you title it "How To Cook A Steak" and then feature yourself frying a piece of bologna, out of focus, in the dark, with the camera placed two rooms away? Probably not, but this video is the same thing.

Maybe you are unaware or his martial arts history, knife making career or Knife Guild presidency? Try looking up your subject matter befor running your mouth. Your review of an import knock off demonstrates ignorance. And your ethos is never established. What exactly are you an expert in? Its certainly not knives, or the proper use of tools, or land scaping, or proper lighting and filming of videos.

And only one company is actually endorsed by Gil and that is UC everything else is garbage and not endorsed by Gil. Regardless if you want real Gil Hibben knife that you can actually use you have to pay for it if you can find one because there was only like 450 of those made. One would have to saw the handle off in order to get it off lol but get ready to spend pretty penny .

      @SENGVIN 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well clearly I'm his fan and clearly I can tell difference between hand made knife made by Gil Hibben and Design by Gil Hibben made in china....You know what that means right ? yea it means they are using Gil Hibben Design lol . I know devil is in the detail but it got you confused right ?
      Anyways who knows what would you do in his position but a lot of people are selling their design and I'm sure you wold do the same if the opportunity came knocking. In this case the UC company is using his design ,that is far from the original knife. There is not much he can say as far as the material used to make those chines knives. Some companies are using his name illegally, what are you going to say about that ? Clearly companies want to use his name because he is famous guy. And now he is even more famous because of that . (nothing wrong with it)
      Lastly I do agree with you that all those Chines copies are junk (99%) and people should be warned about them 100% true. I my self did the same mistake at the beginning because I didn't know better. We all learn every day and one of the most important skill to learn now days is how to distinguish between deceiving advertisement and reality .

    And another guy who just talks nonsense on TH-cam.
    Firstly, the procedure for welding a threaded rod is used by many knife makers.
    Secondly, the knife shown is designed by Gil Hibben and manufactured in small numbers, but most were mass-produced in China under license from United Cuttlery.
    That means that it is a replica of a Gil Hibben knife.
    I've been using the so-called Gil Hiben Highlander Bowie for 32 years, as seen in Natural Born Killers, and I can't complain about its flawless functionality over the long period of time.

    Nice looking knife! Even though it may be of a weaker quality, look on the bright side! You can drill a hole in the tang, and have a screw secure the handle. You can also try to take it to a knife-maker who could perhaps reweld the tang tail with a better quality material. Look at the Extrema Ratio Mk2.1 tang solution. It also uses somewhat similar technique. Also, if you choke up on the handle and do not abuse the knife, it could serve you well. You know cheapo knives are great for getting the feeling of the real one, and make nice decorations, light use hobby knives. How about in the kitchen? So cheer up! This is not a 600 dollar strider that you find that you don't like anymore, or worse yet, scratched up!!!!

Mr. Hibbens makes high quality custom knives, but his design is probably the property of the manufacturer and they can change it to lower costs. This is a Chinese knockoff of a real Gil Hibben knife. These can be found all over eBay! The First Blood and First Blood Part 2 knives were designed by Jimmy Lile, and unfortunately there are numerous Chinese knockoffs of his knives all over the internet. Master Cutlery has the license to the Rambo name, and they produce those knives in China as well. The 1980's United Cutlery replicas were closely monitored by Jimmy Lile, Stallone, Hibben, and Carolco Pictures as the official movie replicas produced in Taiwan. Even those knives are not meant to be used as actual survival knives, and they are literally just considered movie props. The real Hibben and Lile Rambo knives are priced well over 1000 dollars.
