I love this poem it ring so true to meet because this is what i am totally dealing with right now. cause i am the dark one i am the one that has had a lot of hardship and dealing with a lot of the same issues that you just describe. thank you Xem for sharing this story.
The question is why are boys so damn mean? I know part of it comes from gay men being marginalize in society at large. But that doesn't explain why we're so mean to each other. Like there is definitely a caste system in the Black gay community (I mention men of color because that's the only experience I have to go by). I wonder when people will figure out you don't get cool points by treating other people like shit.
Kudos to you for verbalizing those words! Mean boys are nothing but insecure people who use societies rules to feel comfortable and accepted. They are people that have no back bone with low self-esteem that pours from their insides and they will be the same people who end up lonely, old and unsure of who they really are. I have friends who have experienced situations like this and it's a shame that of all the rights that gays fight for, they can be so vindictive and evil toward one another. There isn't enough awareness out there that lets others know about prejudice, colorist, racism and discrimination that takes place from WITHIN the gay community and it's time that many speak out about it. Well spoken Xem!
Xem love this piece and love you too. I'm gifted as a singer and I really haven't been doing anything with it. Life, surviving, work etc can sometimes consume you. I needed to hear this... Thanks!
I enjoyed this video and can relate to it. This kind of thinking some people have that they are superior to someone else, is seen so so often! I too, have tools to help me stay encouraged, wonderful Family, and Friends. Continued Blessings to you.
Amazing...it's so very true how some of us in the gay community look down on others that are at a different levels in life based on materialistic things. Very good work!
Your openness and courage is always so very refreshing in a world of inauthenticity and pretentiousness. I appreciate your sincerity and transparency, Xem. I'd also encourage you, in your writing, to highlight the concrete actions and details that exemplify the abstract qualities you observe and wish us to see (i.e. show us their arrogance or status obsession - prove it to us by their own actions or words; as opposed to telling us). Keep the faith and know that Our Father never fails to deliver on His promises. The talents He has invested in us always bear fruit. :)
That was very deep and saddening that there is still cattiness in our group especially after all the discrimination we still have to fight outside of the group
This was a very well written, well thought out piece. As you read your piece, I envisioned the story, just you were reading it. The main objective I've took from this story was that, it doesn't matter how many degrees are on your wall, what job you have and what connections you have, you are still one of us. You're still African-American, and will never measure up or compare to "the white man". We are all on the same team. Those mean boys can't take their various degrees and accomplishments with them to the grave.
The last part where you mentioned prayer and action is such truthful, age old wisdom that never really gets old or outdated. I achieved so many of the goals that I stepped into 2O14 with, and I am still left in awe of God's awesome wonders. Keep believing. Keep inspiring. Keep feeding your public with positivity. I love you Xemerald :-* #POETNHEKNOWIT #1LUV1HART #HAPPYHOLIDAZE!
My wise young brother - yes we as African diaspora people - kidnapped from our ancestral homeland - can be very cold and hard on each other - just for the hell of it - inculcating the negativity of racism and white supremacy and spewing it out over each other like brain washed whores and chicken Georges - instead of treating each other with the love respect and esteem - that we crave instead from the 'massa's' table - it is easier to do that - than to ask a 'brother' or sistah to sit with us and share our myriad stories - and out of that shared pain humiliation and shame and self-hatred - find common threads of joys laughter and peace of mind in knowing - we are not alone - we should ALL REMEMBER - 'I AM BECAUSE WE ARE AND BECAUSE WE ARE - THEREFORE I AM!! Peace and love my wise little brother! Stay strong, continue to be the credit you are to your father's name and your mother's love! XXX
see that is the precise reason i stay in my house and go out maybe twice a year, i have seen and heard it all in the gay community, and there comes a point when you just figure it out as xem has done this with his 5 types of men at these gatherings.on his website.....aint nobody got time for that....
Excellent poem sir. When you talk about pushing yourself and tapping into your own talents, it reminds me of that old adage about God providing all the birds tons of unlimited free food....however even God does not drop it into their nests. The birds have to go out and GET THE FOOD. Have a nice rest of your summer Xem.
Mr . Van Adams, ,well I must say you hit this one out the park this time. this very topic has touched my heart on so many levels I couldn't begin to tell you. a very close friend of mine were just having this very same dialogue. The sheer cattiness of the brothers of color has and still , confounds me and nauseated me. with all this nonsense it's no wonder alot of us are alone bitter. Our white counterparts don't seem to have this same issues that we men of color do. thank you brother for giving this much need dialogue.
"Our white counterparts don't seem to have this same issues that we men of color do." Actually they do, but it seems to be the age factor or "if you're over 40, don't even look my way" attitude with them. I notice this (live in LA & WEHO) with most of these younger, so-called "pretty boys clique" gay white men under age 35. But if you are over 40, look "hot" and have a little bit of money? The young white pretty boys & their clique (regardless of the race) will make an exception for you. From what I have witness with this group (young white pretty boys clique), most are tired ass tricks (hoes) to begin with and are looking for a sugar daddy. So, it's just not brothers with this cattiness, mindless superficial BS, it' the gay community at large. Some within the gay community will discriminate against each other based on age, class, body type and yeah even race alone. And with that type of mindset, you're exactly right Curtis, cause I knew a gay man (an uncle in his '60s), who was too picky, catty, stubborn (self loathing too) who discriminated against other gay men for various of reasons and unfortunately died bitter and alone.
I really liked this. As you were performing it, I started to see it as a live action presentation. With five guys sitting around a table. Each one speaking a different section, a spot light on them as they gave their monologue and the others still visible in silhouette.
So true my best friend is mixed and dudes be all on him. No shade I dress better and I'm a gym rat but when we out dudes only come to me asking sup with ya light friend and I get treated like a wall painting not there cuz I'm chocolate skin. It has taken me to the point where I been using bleaching soaps and creams tryna be lighter so I can get more attention from dudes. Sad but true
Your video made me think of this funny video by Todrick Hall called Mean Boys. I don't know if you have seen it, but I hope you enjoy it. It really parodies the issues that you talk about it in the video and artlicle. Let me know what you think. Enjoy. Here is the link: th-cam.com/video/hzRf56XbrNA/w-d-xo.html

Words dance from your mouth...i love that....
That is a realality poem.
That poem reminds me of a guy I met not long after I start going out in the black gay "lifestyle" He was an annoying stuck-up queen!
I really liked this. As you were performing it, I started to see it as a live action presentation. With five guys sitting around a table. Each one speaking a different section, a spot light on them as they gave their monologue and the others still visible in silhouette.
Call me shallow - you are so easy on the eyes...
