Gravesite Of THE ONLY U.S. President Who Ever Did This--Until 2024?

- The 22nd AND 24th U.S. President, Grover Cleveland is buried at Princeton Cemetery in Princeton, New Jersey.
He's the only U.S. President to serve two non-consecutive terms of office--so far. Another former President is running for office again, this year, four years after losing his last election. If he wins this year's election, he will join Grover Cleveland as the second U.S. President to to serve two non-consecutive terms of office.
Either way, the 2024 Presidential election will likely be the most important election in American history.

I am a lifelong New Jersey resident who never considered Grover Cleveland a true New Jerseyian since his family had moved to New York when he was 12. Thank for informing me that he is buried in Princeton. I had literally just bought a biography of him because I had read one on Benjamin Harrison and I wanted to give Cleveland a fair hearing. I hope to travel to Princeton cemetery a veiw his grave now. Thank you for your information and your videos.
Thanks for sharing George 👍
His birthplace is really interesting in Caldwell I’ve been there before with my mom. Also fun fact while most people think the Baby Ruth Candy Bar is named after Babe Ruth. It’s actually named after Ruth Cleveland who tragically died at the age of 12 on January 7th 1904. Following doctors advice Mrs. Cleveland did not attend her funeral but former president Woodrow Wilson did.
@TheGraveyardChannel I have skipped over reading books about Presidents Van Buren and Polk and have begun to read a biography about Cleveland. I will let return to the other two after I read this one. Then maybe I'll return to reading about George Washington.
Fun fact: Ruth Cleveland, who is buried next to her father, was the namesake of the Baby Ruth candy bar!
The candy company had to take Babe Ruth to court over it because he claimed it was named after him because he was a household name at the time. Babe Ruth lost.
Great tour, Steve! ❤👍 Hope you finally got dried out!😊
Grover Cleveland's wife, Frances Folsom, had been his ward. When she left for college, Grover asked her mother for permission to
write to her. She was one of the first students at a woman's liberal arts college, called Wells College, located in Aurora, NY (on the
east side of Cayuga lake). Wells College was founded by Henry Wells the owner of Wells Fargo Stage Coach (later a bank)
Frances Folsom's second husband was Thomas J. Preston Jr., a professor at Princeton University. Thomas J. Preston and Frances
Cleveland (m. 1913) were married for 34 years. A noted scholar he studied in Europe as well as the USA. He is buried in Rosedale
Cemetery Montclair, Essex County, New Jersey, USA, next to his first wife, Jane Elizabeth “Jennie” Weller Preston and their children.
Princeton University used to be called the College of New Jersey, it was originally, primarily a Presbyterian seminary.
*Regarding Aaron Burr*
"Aaron Burr Jr. was born on February 6, 1756, in Newark, located in what was then the Province of New Jersey. He was the second
child of the Reverend Aaron Burr Sr., a Presbyterian minister and second president of the College of New Jersey, which became
Princeton University. His mother, Esther Edwards Burr, was the daughter of noted theologian Jonathan Edwards and his wife
Sarah." -- Wikipedia.
That is why he is buried in Princeton Cemetery. His wife, Theodosia Bartow Prevost Burr, who died young, while they lived in NYC;
was buried at then now, defunct St. John's Burying Ground, that was associated with Trinity (Episcopal) Church. Aaron's and
Theodosia's only child ... (see below)
Aaron Burr was a Revolutionary War hero. He was also active in NY state and NYC politics. *He is not the villain that he has been*
*painted as by those who adored Alexander Hamilton.* Both he and Hamilton had contrasting views of what their new country
would become. Burr sided with Thomas Jefferson's vision (as did another, later president, Andrew Jackson) as opposed to the
Federalists' vision, that was supported by Alexander Hamilton. *The vision of the Federalists prevailed regarding the structure*
*of the government*
*Theodosia Burr Alston*
"Theodosia Burr Alston (June 21, 1783 - January 2 or 3, 1813) was an American socialite and the daughter of the third U.S.
Vice President, Aaron Burr, and Theodosia Bartow Prevost. Her husband, Joseph Alston, was governor of South Carolina
during the War of 1812. She was lost at sea at age 29." ... Her only child, a son, pre-deceased her in 1812." -- Wikipedia.
Years later rumors swirled that the Patriot (the ship she was on) fell prey to pirates and that it was lured onto the shoals,
near Nag's Head or near Cape Hatteras, N.C. It is said that the pirates murdered everyone onboard the vessel.
Thanks for adding this additional info for us! 😊👍
Those Witherspoon's are ancestors of Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon, a.k.a. Hollywood's Reese Witherspoon. She has quite an elaborate family history back to the signers of the Declaration of Independence! 🎉
I had no idea. Thanks for sharing that Janet.
A street in Princeton named Witherspoon Street
A military headstone
It's cool to see that you got to visit John Witherspoon's grave. I really wan tot visit all the graves of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. John Witherspoon is interesting as he was the only minister to sign the Declaration of Independence and one of two signers to be born in Scotland.
Thanks for sharing that interesting trivia with us Jason. 👍
In 1893 Grover Cleveland had oral surgery performed to remove a cancerous growth from his mouth. This operation was done on a private yacht.
Always interesting and informative Steve! Happy Good Friday and Happy Easter to you and your family! 🐣💜
Same to you Catherine! 😀👍
Thank you. I enjoyed this. Sorry the weather was so bad. Stay safe and take care.
I just love those New England Cemeteries! Thanks Steve!
Umm. New Jersey is not part of New England. New England is six states, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Though parts of upstate New York are like New England.
If these Headstones could talk, the Stories that They could tell. Isn’t it amazing how the United States has changed, but has stayed the same, in some respects. Thank You Steve, for sharing a little bit more of Our American Heritage. Another wonderful video, as usual. Blessings to You and Jim! ❤❤❤🇺🇸
It sure is Nancy! 🙃
I went to Princeton Cemetery years ago...at least 30 years ago, if not more with my grandparents. I'm 39, and I was around 9 or ten. I was always interested in Presidents. I had a book called "Presidents: Birth places, Homes and Burial Sites". I read that thing religiously. It went into detail on every president's (From Washington to Clinton, at the time of it's publication) birth place, home and grave.
My grandparents and I were in Princeton because I had to see a specialty doctor there....we decided to go to the cemetery while we were there because I wanted to visit President Cleveland. This was the days before GPS and Find A Grave...we got there and asked where Princeton Cemetery was. We were told there are two Princeton Cemeteries. We found the correct one, and while we were driving past to go to the entrance, I spotted the President's grave from the street. I pointed and told my grandparents "There it is! I see it!" It was a ways off, but I recognized it from my book. I just remember my grandfather being beside himself that I spotted it from the road, and it was actually the correct grave once we got up to it. 😂
At the time, we didn't realize Aaron Burr was also buried there.
Great video as always Steve! 😊
That’s awesome, Joey. Thank you for sharing this fun memory with us. I hope you are OK now. 👍
@@TheGraveyardChannel My pleasure Steve. And yes, I am quite well, and have been ever since. 😊. I always look forward to your videos.
Another great Presidential grave and stories of its famous residents! Happy Easter to you, Jim and the family Steve~ 🐰🌷🐤
Thank you, Joane the same to you! 😊👍
I appreciate the History that was told in the video and even in the comments , a lot of people added more …. I’m a firm believer that in order to have a better future , we have to keep teaching our future generations our country’s history. Thank you for doing that
❤fromTX
Well said! 👍
I enjoyed watching your video. I recommend that you read about historical cemeteries you visit. Princeton Cemetery is the Westminster Abbey of the US. The graves you visited by Aaron Burr Jr’s grave were very historic. Jonathan Edwards is the greatest theologian in American History and led the 1st Great Awakening. Aaron Burr Sr is buried right next to Jonathan Edwards but you went the other direction. Aaron Burr Sr was famous clergyman and President of Princeton before Edwards. Both died having very short tenures as did the few others on the row of graves there, like Samuel Davies. Princeton was called the Log College or College of NJ in those days and was a divinity school to train preachers and missionaries. You were standing in the middle of one of the most fascinating places in our history. I could take a month to cover the important people who are interred there. I thought I’d help fill you in on some details you didn’t know about.
Thanks for sharing this with us. Unfortunately, I was on a 6 Week Rd. trip to visit the gravesites of the US President and I wasn’t able to spend a lot of time at each cemetery, so I missed visiting a lot of other famous gravesites too. almost every cemetery I visited was full of famous people that I wanted to visit, but didn’t have time to. It would’ve turned into a 6 Month Rd. trip instead of a 6 Week Rd. trip. Not enough hours in the day! 😲😩
@@TheGraveyardChannel I would love to take that month road trip! Appreciate what you do - and yes, there is a ton of history out there that’s impossible to digest! Be safe and look forward to seeing your next one!
Steve you're just Awesome 👌💯💯💯💯💯💯
Great video
I always enjoy watching your videos
I don't think he got to choose who was to be hung or not. That is up to the courts. Cleveland simply pulled the lever. If Aaron Burr had not "defended his honor," he might have become president!
When I saw Princeton, I figured this would be about Wilson.
Another great video, Steve! Aaron Burr's daughter Theodosia was lost at sea off the coast of South Carolina in 1813 when she was 29. For years after, he had to listen to all of the theories about her death.
OMG, the daughter lost at sea in that era... early 1800s, would be a challenge to ever find her. Thanks for that info.
How sad. Thanks for sharing that with us Brent.
The quaintness and beauty of that cemetery made up for both of the Presidents modest burial sites. The historical facts that you added were nice too. And we appreciate you getting out there in all types of weather just to make sure that we get a good video. Thank you and have a nice day 😊💜.
Thanks P! ☔️😀👍
Thank you Steve!!❤❤ I love that cemetery!!!
Great vid, one of your best. Thanx Steve.
Glad you enjoyed it Philo!
Thank you for teaching us and showing us history
Happy Friday Steve❣️ I want to wish you both a Happy Easter 🐰 Another great upload. I'm loving it!!! 😊
What a beautiful old cemetery!!!
Thanks, Leesa, and the same to you! 😀👍
As always, I find these videos educational. Keep up the good work,Steve.
Thanks Michael 👍
Another Great Video Steve, I really enjoyed it. waiting for the next one. God Bless and take care My Friend.
Paul Tulane was born near Princeton, NJ and died in the area so it makes sense he’s buried at that cemetery.
Steve,
Rwv. Jonathon Edward's was not only the former president of Princton but he was major character of The Great Awakening. His sermon, Sinners in The Hands of an Angry God" is considered The greatest message preached in North America ( check out the story behind this message). He died young due to a treatment for sickness. He is/was taught in Many American History Clasdes snd his writings are goid reading for Theologians.
One more thing, Ruth Cleveland was daughter of Grover. She is memorialized by The naming of The Baby Ruth Candy Bar in her honor. She is buried there with her Father.
Steve, i know this is off topic but did you see they are auctioning off that crypt one row up and 4 over from Marilyn Monroe this weekend? Bidding starts at $50,000. They expect it to fetch $400,000.
Thanks West, I hadn’t heard! 😳😊👍
Wasn't there some pretty weird stuff about that? Seems I remember hearing that the guy occupying the space directly above Monroe was buried face down so he could see her? Some pretty creepy stuff
@@larryhatcher8927 yep, that is a true story. All those people are creepy in Hollywood
Grover Cleveland did have a very modest head stone. Some of the Presidents graves you've been to have been way over the top monuments!
And bonus score for showing us Aaron Burr's grave site! I really enjoyed this, Steve. Thanks 😊
Thanks, Marlene 👍
Great tour! Thank you so much for doing this and sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very informative! Really enjoyed the detail.
As always, a great video adventure Steve. Not only were you near Cleveland and Burr’s graves, you were near the “grave” of Albert Einstein. After his death at Princeton in 1955, he was cremated and his ashes were either scattered on the grounds of Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies or (most likely) they were scattered in Milestone River which runs through Princeton.
Thanks for sharing that with us Frank. I didn’t know that. 😊👍
Very interesting and beautiful…thanks for enduring the rain for us!
I'm a lifelong New Jerseyan, as others have said they are. I'm way down in Atlantic County, and normally I only pass through Princeton on the way to the northwest part of the state. Maybe some day I'll get to that cemetery. It's amazing who is buried there. Thanks.
Hopefully history won't be same anymore
Spring in the east? It rains about every day
Thanks for the story Steve 👍
My best friend lives in Plainsboro, which is just a few minutes from Princeton. Maybe next time I go down there I’ll tell her we have to check out the cemetery. When her sister got married, she took her wedding pictures at Princeton University‘s campus. That’s the closest I ever got to attending! 😅 Happy Easter, Steve!🐇
The weather sounds like here in the UK Steve.
☔️😲
Another grave of note: José and Mary Louise "Kitty" Menéndez, the couple murdered by their sons Lyle and Erik, are also buried here.
Thank you telling the story
Happy spring & happy Friday🐰🍀👍. Thank you for the wonderful informative videos. I learn something every time I watch. Steve, people are still barbaric. 🥹
Sad but true Tex! 😩
Very nice video ! I enjoy yoyr videos Keep them coming ! Have a nice day weekend !
While you're in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic area will you be visiting the gravesite of Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States? Thanks, Steve for bringing us to the burial sites of our Presidents and Vice Presidents of the US. The history lessons are very informative as well and brings back memories from my school days from many years ago. Thanks again!
Yes, I did visit his gravesite. I just haven’t shared it yet, but I will.

Just catching up with your vlogs Steve so informative, just love the US history, and hearing how the previous Presidents all lived and died.

What a beautifully landscaped cemetery. I wonder if they keep track of each planting's date. Some trees, shrubs and flowers (such as roses) must be very old varieties. Thank you, Steve, for always teaching us something interesting!
Thank you

Well, hot dog, my father went to Princeton and Tulane and my eighth generation grandfather, signed the declaration of independence; Thomas Stone - this video is really up my alley - thank you, Steve
Wow, what an interesting family tree you have. 👍
Grover Cleveland's Daughter Ruth was named after the Baby Ruth Chocolate Bar. Many people today, think that it's named after the baseball player Babe Ruth. But apparently, that's not the case.
Ruth Cleveland was born before George Herman "Babe" Ruth
I thought it was the other way around, that the candy bar was named after Cleveland’s baby daughter Ruth.
@@melaubachYes, that is true.

Thank you, Lisa. I am. 😀👍
Thank you very much for your channel, Steve. Grover Cleveland was the first Democratic president since before the Civil War. The next after him would be Woodrow Wilson (just before and during WW1). Cleveland taught at Princeton and viewed this town as his home until he died in 1908. Jonathan Edwards (7:00) was America's greatest theologian who had a scientific bent. He was one of those courageous few in the earliest waves of smallpox inoculation. Sadly, it proved lethal and he died of smallpox after only serving as head of Princeton College for a very short tenure. Thanks again, Steve. Best,

Wish you could do more of NJ cemeteries
We have alot of history. Try Riverside cemetery down by the Delaware river
The thought of you wandering around the cemetery in the dark. 😂😂😂😂
You didn't happen to go to the Hopewell Cemetary where John Hart is buried, on this trip too, did you? If not, you should have. It's only like a 10-15 minute drive from this one.
Unfortunately, no. Instead of a 6 Week Rd. trip I needed a 6 Month Rd. trip to visit all the amazing cemeteries. I wanted to from coast to coast.
Great history lesson!
Hello Steve have a nice weekend ,ester❤ 🐣
You too Sara! 😊👍
Sometime during the Truman Presidency, Frances Cleveland Preston had been invited to a luncheon. There she met General Dwight Eisenhower. The fine general did not recognize the former First Lady. When he heard she had previously lived in DC, he asked where? She said, the White House. I’m sure that was cause for heavy laughter.
A story for you, Steve: late in life Frances had severe cataracts. So much so, it prompted her both to learn braille and acquire a braille typewriter. When she finally had cataract surgery, she continued to use the braille typewriter to translate books into braille for blind children. From all accounts, Frances Cleveland-Preston, was pretty close to being an angel on earth. As many women of her day, she was staunchly against Women’s Suffrage. She felt it would lead us to where we are today.
She and Grover were deeply involved in Princeton University. They funded many of the students educations.
Glad your surgery was a great success!❤
Where are we today? What is that supposed to mean? Your words not mine.
@@janetslicer3637 Back then, women raised children, worked through charities to help the less fortunate in their communities, making the country a better place. They ran the homes like a business, they fed the families healthy well balanced meals, etc. women were important. Now many of us are all unhealthy and overweight. Women were the most important when it came to families and the children. No one picked up the roles women deserted. That’s what suffrage and feminism were about. A cause for women to justify their dropping their end in the natural order. Why aren’t women happy today. The best they can ever be is like a man. They’re nothing special, as they had been.
If you can say we and our children are better off today for having no guiding force in the home that women used to be, I think you’re deluded by the politics of today. Women call marriage the patriarchy, but most homes had been matriarchal, as women were the authority that formed our children into useful and productive citizens.
Yes, I said it, women dropped the ball. However women arrived at the decision that raising kids, helping the less fortunate and running a household weren’t important endeavors escapes me. Btw in the early days of women’s suffrage, the greatest opposition to it, were women!
Believe it or not, there is an ever growing movement among women to try to return to the days of yore, where women were women. They are rapidly becoming disenfranchised with the decision a small group of women foisted on them over 100/150 years ago. Not my word: women’s.
Great comment of info you gave in this comment thread!
@rhvoriginals3083 good lord ! That is not what this channel is for. Go preach your crazibess somewhere else. Wow
Lol that is so funny! I wonder why she would have been against women suffrage though and what you mean about where we are today?
Love your channel?❤

Five years after Grover Cleveland's Frances married Thomas Preston, A Greek Instructor. He's buried at Rosedale Cemetery in New Jersey.
What should be mentioned is that in the three elections he won the popular vote, but Benjamin Harrison won the presidency by winning the electoral college. Cleveland then won the electoral college the first and third time. I believe there was five times where someone won the popular vote but not the electoral college, the last two times in 2000 and 2016. I hope Cleveland remains the only president to to serve two non-consecutive terms, because if not we will no longer have presidents to elect. Cleveland also had an illegitimate child and his last children (with his wife) died in 1995 and his wife in 1947.
👍

The pastel-colored blossoms on deciduous trees is commonplace in early spring. If you watch the Masters golf tournament in early April, you will see many brightly colored blossoms as the television directors like to put them into shots of the tournament.
In your interesting resume of Grover Cleveland, you could have added that he was the first presidential candidate to win the popular vote in three elections (1884, 1888, and 1892). However, his Republican challenger, Benjamin Harrison, won the electoral vote in 1888 and was elected president.
Thanks for mentioning that Joseph. If it weren’t for the electoral college, we would have a lot fewer Republican presidents.
When I visited this cemetery I found the graves of Jose and Kitty Menendez. Sad story..
It always amazes me that Californians are surprised it rains every few days in most of the US...😅
Jonathan Edwards was Aaron Burr's grandfather & author of the famous hellfire sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"
I knew exacly who you visiting, just from the titles!
I'm always reminded of the "got milk" commercial when thinking about Aaron Burr. Since then, I expect his name to be pronouced as if your mouth is full of peanut butter, just like in the commercial.

Sunny every day in Spring in the Northeastern states? Hahaha. Steve, did you ever hear that April showers bring May flowers? And here in southern Vermont, last weekend we got THREE FEET of new snow.
