I went through this exact thing with Shorin-ryu karate. I trained for 12 yrs and worked up to 2nd dan black belt. I was competing at the national level and thought I was the stuff. We had a guy come into our dojo who was a friend of a fellow bb. The guy asked me if I wanted to train Thai kick boxing and Kali/ arnis at his house. I was thinking; I will show this old skinny guy something. I totally underestimated him and overestimated my years of traditional karate. He handed me my lunch quite a few times that first time, and I trained another full week with him then gave up karate. Though I learned some good basics in karate It was far from being realistic in the streets for the most part.
Karate can still be used. it's just about adapting it. The technique you picked up will still serve you well, it's just being able to switch to whatever the situation calls for. That's some great dedication getting up to 2nd dan black belt.
Really nice explanation :) If the attacker is positioned directly behind, it might be difficult to hit him with the elbow or fist. My way to create space in this situation is making my shoulders and back round and pushing my back against the attacker.
If that isn't working for you. You can do a sitting sweep. Straddle the attacker's leg. Use your foot that is lined up with the center of his body, and hook his ankle. Then sit back. Their a very good chance that you'll break the attacker's ankle.

For a big guy, I'm quick and nimble. I'll set the scene for you. I was with my girlfriend. I put her in the car and then I walked around to my side and I opened my door. The guy that was in front of me closest to my car door said "excuse me". As I was about to answer him. They guy who I didn't see grabbed me from behind. Hmmm...this type of choke has nothing to do with your windpipe or airway; it is the compression of the two main arteries of the neck...thus preventing the flow of blood to the brain. Having said that, keeping your chin down...initially...in this movement will give you space and time to escape.
Did we watch the same video? His UKE, though not applying the attack forcefully, placed his forearm in front of the neck where the windpipe is. That is classic KUBI SHIME, an air choke. If the UKE had snaked his arm around the neck covering both sides on the neck with the crook his elbow in front of the neck near the windpipe that would be the blood choke you described.
@@jtilton5 From my perspective the air choke will not knock you out within 6-10 seconds: for how long can you hold your breath and stay conscious? The blood choke on the arteries however stops the blood providing oxygen to your brain and this is when you lose consciousness rapidly. I'm a martial artist/scientist with 50 plus years experience. I've said this a thousand times. Art is as unimportant in a fight as caliber is in a shooting. The most important thing in a life and death situation is training intentions and mental state. If Andre the giant GOD rest his soul were struck in the eye with a 32acp or a 22lr he would be neutralized. If you do judo or Aikido for example what are your intentions in a bar fight with a drunken miscreant ? How did you prepare for this in training are you intending on knocking or choking him out ? Is he going to stab you when you grab him should you grab him ? How is he attacking you ? Whether I'm doing Tang soo do or Kempo SD an eye gouge and strike to the windpipe are the same. Aikido is USUALLY done by gentlemen or women who have NEVER been in a life threatening situation and don't train this way. As a child we laughed at the guys in dresses in Aikido. Masters Jeff B and J L Fain made me a believer in Aikido by summarily man handling me while I tried to figure out what TF was going on. They are special forces ex military officers who are killers. Their Aikido is GEARED towards SD not elegance beauty or niceties. I had the great fortune of training with a judo master that threw me and choked me UNCONSCIOUS in practice because I asked what would happen if I attacked you like this ? I know TKD men who do fantastic in a tournament but would be destroyed in REAL life. I know of TKD men like Masters Cain and the Kim brothers who are dangerous in REAL life fighting BECAUSE THAT'S HOW THEY WERE TRAINED. Aikido can be neutered or it can be devastating and beautiful. There's no better styles ONLY better men. Osu and respect. 🙏🏼🐅🐉
Why don't you hit hard on his groin with your hand when both hands are free?? That groin strike would loosen the grips of any, no matter how strong he is. And to make it even more painful, you can crush the groin instead of trying to hit it!! Post this, you can engage in your fancy Aikido moves 😊
i could make a video of "times when my dojo failed me". starting with being unable to move or breathe for 3 weeks. then following up with times after that i decided to defend myself an got chewed out for it. so pretty much training in a gym with others would have weakened me. if you train light sparring light hits is all you'll ever know. i suppose this is why boxers an some other fighters for 70 years look like noobs even when labeled "goat". tyson always interested me cause he looked like one of the only fighters to ever know how to fight till then.
and if your technique doesnt work because your opponent knows it, its because your technique is not good. good technique will work whether or not they know it.
I never seen anyone doing a choke like this. You choke with one hand and massage his shoulder with the other one? Also why your face so open ? Please, learn how to choke first.

Pretty sad that coach gets choked out by insanely basic choke by a nobody 🤣 goes to show how useful aikido is
i could make a video of "times when my dojo failed me". starting with being unable to move or breathe for 3 weeks. then following up with times after that i decided to defend myself an got chewed out for it. so pretty much training in a gym with others would have weakened me. if you train light sparring light hits is all you'll ever know. i suppose this is why boxers an some other fighters for 70 years look like noobs even when labeled "goat". tyson always interested me cause he looked like one of the only fighters to ever know how to fight till then.
Very true. A dojo is to not injure their students. A fight is to kill everything that moves.
Hopefully it didn’t fail you in prison.
just do judo and bjj, this is nonsense.
and if your technique doesnt work because your opponent knows it, its because your technique is not good. good technique will work whether or not they know it.
I don’t want to see these two dudes, bring back that beautiful black girl!
bros down horrendous 💀
But what if you're weak chinned? Hahaha ,no good info mate.
I never seen anyone doing a choke like this. You choke with one hand and massage his shoulder with the other one? Also why your face so open ? Please, learn how to choke first.
Akido sucks. JKD is the answer or to buy a weapon.
