The “this is so meta” joke about the fact it’s been over 6 years now and we’re still waiting on Part 6 is just pathetic at this point from someone who ends Part 5 saying “I actually care about my audience”. BULLSHIT. The fact you haven’t manned up, buckled down, and put out Part 6 after 6+ years at this point is honestly mind boggling and says a lot about your character! Stop making excuses and blaming the project for how hard and time consuming it is. You have 1.12 MILLION subs on this channel, yet you’re putting out 1-2 45+ min long videos a day that average under 1k views on your Gaming Channel w/ only 35.2k subs. A channel that’s 7 YEARS old w/ 3.3k videos. I think we can see what takes up so much of your time. STOP MAKING EXCUSES, get your fucking priorities straight, ACTUALLY care about your audience, and FINISH these fucking ‘The Genius of Synecdoche, New York’ videos! Not just Part 6, but Part 7 -__! Seriously, it’s truly insulting and disrespectful to your audience. There are literally some who died waiting for Part 6, and more who will die. At this rate we’ll all die before you ever put out Part 6-___ IF you ever care enough about your audience to ever put them out at all. Sorry if I’m being harsh, just being honest.
Some people died hoping that they would watch part 6. Let that sink in. I don't know if I'm lucky or unlucky to watch this film in 2021. How will it change my life or will it? I would probably be dead before realizing this. It seems this analysis series evolved to become an art of itself. Thank you for this and hoping to watch part 6 before
How naïve I was a mere 80 minutes ago. I started part 1 of this series almost two hours ago. As I was watching I checked the dates of each video being released and arrogantly assumed that I’d see the review in its entirety because there were 5 videos. Here I am nearly two hours later not knowing whether to laugh or cry because time is now laughing and crying at me.
I know this was 9 months ago but I STARTED WATCHING THIS AT 3 AM AND NOW ITS 5 AM AND I CAN'T GET ANY CLOSURE WHAT THE FUCK ADUM I FEEL LIKE I'M LOSING MY MIND NOW.
I had just turned 13 when this series started and I watched the first episode. I'm turning 21 this year. EDIT: Due to some cynicism about this in the replies, I probably should've mentioned that the reason I commented this was because I was subscribed back when all the parts of this series was released. So I'm not just remarking on the amount of time that has passed between then and now, moreso the fact that I actually did watch part one when I was 13, and it was crazy to me how much my life had changed between this series starting and now, expecially as it is still ongoing.
Next video, Adam is going to hire an actor to do the review for him as himself except it's going to devolve into a story about him trying to write part six.
I was 16 when first watching this series. Since then I graduated high school, spent 4 years in college, got a degree, got a job, moved out, got engaged, bought a house, raised a dog, got another job, and soon I'll be married. Life goes by faster and faster and then you're dead.
Thanks! Just giving thanks to this series, it has activated me to look back at this film at different points my life and appreciate it from a different perspective throughout. Your commentary is awesome and it has really sparked me to view this film as Charlie describes! Thank you. Every few years I go back through this series and rewatch the film and pretty much recollect my own experience because of the film lol Still hoping you might do Part 6 by 2025!
This is probably my favourite film, though I find it difficult to reccomend. It's also the kind of movie that still baffles me that a human being wrote and created this.
Jay Jimenez How can one find this movie simple? If you compare this to other hollywood movies, you would get a very big difference between the complexity of the story being told, characters developing and the pure delivery in the dialogue. But of course, that’s your opinion and i respect it.
It's incredible how both quickly these parts seem to fly by and yet how each minute, each second is crammed full of detail. Both the movie and this analysis provide such deep insight yet don't even scratch the surface of the topics they try to discuss. And the ending to this part, maybe it hit me harder then most but that is such a true statement. We all sit here and see this go up and jokingly scream ITS BEEN 400 YEARS SINCE THE LAST PART OF THIS, yet we have absolutely no idea what was or is going on in Adam's life right now. The joys, pain, suffering and stress taking place throughout all this. Adam I know this piece is stressful to produce and isn't the most popular series on your channel, but I honestly think this will be one of your greatest works, even if the majority of your subscribers never both to check it our. This is a beautifully awful tragic dream, that warns and advises us of things we can avoid becoming or answer and the things we cannot.
Adum, I support your channel and think that your video's are fantastic. The amount of work and time you put into them is impressive and makes you stand out from other channel's. I've gotten my friends into your video's and your video's have helped me through death in my life. So thank you for these video's and I'm excited to see what you have next. Take care.
I also support you on patreon, my thanks to you, it is because of you I have a greater awareness of what good acting and good writing really is. Being a writer and director and currently editing my short film I can without doubt attribute the fruits of my labour partly to watching your analysis and reviews, thank you Adam, and thank you for this in depth analysis of Synecdoche NY, it moved me in more ways because of your review....thank you sir.
I second that. You are one of the very few content creators on TH-cam I not only like and respect immensely, I wish you were my friend as well. I've made note of your 'best of' films over the years, and am in the process of watching as many as I can. Thank you.
If you put the lengths of these videos together you get about 107 minutes, Synecdoche New York is 124. He said at the end of this video he's about 80 minutes in. If it continued at this length, the videos would be around 33% longer than the movie.
I literally went into high school, graduated, went to college for a year, and dropped out since we've been waiting. I've resigned to the fact that even if we see part 6 in the next few years, he'll be delivering the finale from his death bed.
God fucking damn it Adum, I've dropped out of college TWICE since you started this, started two awful TH-cam channels, and disappointed BOTH of my parents. So long This is the best work you've ever done though, imo. This series is masterfully edited and analyzed
I was just thinking this. This is actually my first time going through the Synecdoche video series. I had originally told myself "oh I missed the start, so I'll wait til it's finished and then come back and watch it all as a completed work." However, with Scoot's passing, I realized there are moments you can't plan for; things that could change and you can never go back and revisit what you missed out on. And so I decided it was time to watch these and listen to Adum's thoughts. And after watching them all, I can't help but feel doing the next section might be cathartic in some way for him. 7 years have passed since Part 5. So much good and bad has almost certainly happened for him within that time. I'm sure he's changed dramatically as a person from then until now; and I think it makes sense to use that new perspective to revisit this project. At the same time, I wouldn't hold it against him if he decided to never complete this project, especially with how personal and self-confrontational the subject matter is.
there was this short story by Richard Matheson where a man wishes that his life was edited like a movie. He wanted to cut out all of the boring shit. But then that happens and life turns too fast and he loses track of time and people, similarly too caden
So you’ve said you’ve got part 6 coming up after your lion king review. Since this review has started, I’ve graduated high school, had 4 jobs, and have moved 4 different times. Since the start of this review, Ive went from my blubbering teens to almost my bumbling mid 20s. What’s haunting me is it hasn’t felt that long.
Please, Adum, make Part 6! I know it's difficult and challenging, but please keep this series in mind too. I love your channel because of your Top 10 series and this beautifully insightful analysis of Synecdoche, New York. It’s a humble request-please make Part 6
That last comment he made about us as the audience having no fucking idea what's going on in his life right now hit kinda hard. I think this movie review has brought up a lot of struggles within himself that we will never fully comprehend. I do love these and part of me is sad to know I'll be waiting for a good while before the next part is here. But at the same time, I think the drain this has had on Adam is more than we understand. So if you read this Adam, I will happily watch whatever's next on your to-do list, you return to this if/when the time is right for you.
Synecdoche, New York has breached its container. It has now escaped and is wreaking havoc on all who review it. This movie is like The RIng for movie critics - once they get in deep enough, it swallows them whole.
Adum and Merk had a huge fight that lasted a few days. They don't make vids together anymore and might not even be friends anymore as far was we know... :(
Have you seen Boyhood? It took 12 years to make. I’m just asking you this because Boyhood took 12 years to make. Did I mention that it took 12 years to make? Because it took 12 years to make. I can’t believe it lost the Best Picture Oscar to that pretentious piece of shit called Birdman. Birdman didn’t even take 12 years to make. If it had taken 12 years to make, it would’ve been better. Boyhood did take 12 years to make, which is why I think it’s the best movie of all time. It. Took. 12. Years. To. Make. That’s longer than Earth has existed. I fucking love Boyhood.
i literally watched all five parts at one go, thinking these videos were all uploaded over a span of maybe, at most, a year. then i looked at the upload dates and realized that so much time that passed since the beginning of this series. the same uncanny leap through time that i felt when watching the movie itself
Bruh same, just hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next episode, but at this rate I’m not liking our luck. Have to agree it’s pretty poetic though and it’ll force me to watch this movie
The biggest final message that I got from this film was how to get empathy from despair. The depression of the film comes from the truth of it, we will all die and that’s all we know. To pave that path to die in our own way we must connect to other people. That’s the only way to find ourselves and our role in society. That’s the goal of all art, to connect. Caden must find both a way to connect to his true identity and the people he cares about. This is why him connecting to the role or gender of women is so important, because then he can be empathetic and have better relationships with the family he wishes and wished to have. The play shows the separation between faked connection and real connection, which is defined by our intentions. True empathy and meaning in our individual and collective lives comes from genuine care rather than connections based on only self interest, like Adele’s with Caden or Caden’s with Claire. What I got from the film is that our identity can be weakened and life less meaningful when we live in paranoia of death and let self despair take away our empathy. We all die, and that may make life feel less special or significant, but the fact that we all have the same end means we should connect on that level and treat each other accordingly. We can’t treat people like extras, we may be the director of our own life and death, but everyone else matters just as much.
I hope when, not if, this movie is released on the Criterion Collection, Adam will give his blessing and let this whole series to be a part of it, if they want it because it is a great study of a great piece of film.
Hey Adum, I just want to let you know that im still waiting for part 6. I still care about your perspective on this film. Watching these reviews again reminds me of the past when things weren’t so complicated. So much has happened to me within these years & I have a different perspective on life now. I’d like to see how part 6 would make me feel since you are good at reading into what’s going on in these scenes & explaining subtle things we couldn’t put together.
Are you gonna finish this off this year? I think it's fantastic how you have analyzed this film so far. It's certainly one of my favourites and I feel very lucky that this in-depth look at the film exists.
Yo, Adam, don't sweat it. Totally understand why this took so long to make, you're just one man and can only do so much. Great video, as always. Always saw this movie on the shelf at local shops and never knew how amazing it was. It's incredible but also kinda depressing... Okay, it's super depressing, but still a masterpiece.
Before The Credits it's great, a bit inaccessible/unconventional but if you're a fan of stuff like that and of Kaufman's other work I highly recommend it
when this video came out i was 19... I'm 25 now and i feel like I've experienced very little of the last 6 years. I remember thinking "finally" when this video came out. never did i imagine i would go through so much and learn so much more about myself by the time i came back to this film and this analysis. to be honest it's a scary and beautiful feeling where i'm inspired to do more, live more and experience more and yet, immediately cut down by the realisation that no matter how hard i try make the most of my life, time seems to move increasingly faster. what a strange, meta, one of a kind experience this film provides. And thank you Adam, hope you can find the time to mine everything you're looking for in this film.
Just wanted to say this is my favorite series you're doing, I enjoy the funny videos a lot but the core of the entertainment value isn't that you're laughing at a bad movie but that you have insightful things to say. So please do the videos that you enjoy making and dont listen to the fans too much. Its not for me to say whether or not you enjoyed making the Unfriended series or this one more or less but I got more out of these 5 parts than that YMS review or the Kool Kat videos. If you happen to read this comment and care, you inspired me to make my own reviews so thanks.
Yeah, even though *I* personally enjoy the funny stuff more I *_completely_* agree with your sentiments. Though I guess we might be in a minority considering how most TH-camrs get treated when they aren't meeting the exact demands of their audience's whims :/ Whatever the case I just want Adam to be able to enjoy all his work the absolute most he can :D
being in that stream last night really puts much more weight in what Adam was saying during the review and made it even more uncomfortable than was intended it's hard to believe that only 43 people will be able to view this video in that way which makes this an incredibly personal video
No part 6 yet huh, just watched this movie for the first time now and been quite obsessed with it, really enjoyed your interpretations and takes on it. I'm kind of only commenting this so i can comeback here later in life to reflect on the passage of time, and do as Charlie Kaufman advised and rewatch this movie
Please please please!! You must finish the review! It is so thorough (fonts, song titles, translations, hidden meanings etc) I’m loving this series just as much as I’ve loved the film. I really can’t wait to see the continuation for the review. Best of luck to you in all your projects.
12:36 'Vom Schreibtisch der Adele Lack' would be correct here. 'Des' is the male form in this case. But I'm not sure if that's actually a goof or an implication that Adele's also going through a sex transformation as Caden does.
Hey Adam, I have an idea for a new video/series you could make. I just started looking at your ratings on your imdb page and almost every time i see you rate a movie a 10/10 it shocks me because of how unexpected it is. It's strange seeing you love a particular movie that i could not have anticipated you would (LotR movies, the thing, etc). You could do a video just talking about why you love those movies so much, I think that would be really interesting for us to see (especially since we only really see you talk about movies you love on your top 10 lists once a year).
Just saw this movie last night what a movie. Left me with my mouth open at the amount of detail and control that Kauffman over the production made the movie have a unique feel to it. Watched all the parts and shit i gotta rewatch this movie. Thanks for the recommendation Adam obviously not to me but to your viewers. Thanks for all the time you put into this series and even if you dont finish it the amount of work and detail was tremendous.
I started watching this when I was 16, now I'm 18 and this makes even more sense to me. Between graduating from high school, being in college, dealing with relationships that ultimately fail and constantly scrutinizing myself, I feel like I relate to Caden so much more. Youthful ignorance is sweet and I wish I'd appreciated it more when I was younger.
I have had two near death experiences since your last part, was in a motorcycle accident and I guess the other was ONLY a panic attack but it felt like I was gunna die! Please release part 6 adam!!!!!

The humour of the movie hasn't been spoken about yet but Synecdoche is one of the funniest films I've ever seen. Looking forward to the next part, hopefully I'll still be around to see it
December 28, 2019 and I had just got to watching this series... Adum my love please finish part 6 since your opinion matters towards one of the greatest films I have ever seen.

I finally watched this movie and absolutely loved it. For so long I’ve seen these videos on his channel and seen him talk about working on a new part, but now I finally saw the movie and can watch these without spoiling the movie for myself. He brought up some great ideas I hadn’t thought about. I don’t know when we’ll ever get part 6, but I look forward to that day.
Just a little thing I've noticed: When Caden buys (rents) the building, the woman mentions how Shakespeare was played there. I think that was a play on the famous Shakespeare quote "all the world's a stage" with the place being a literal stage displaying the world and that being a theme in the film
I saw this series when you started and resolved to watch Synechoche, New York some day and then watch this review. in 2022, 7 years after you started, I finally watched it and here I am!
This review has caused me to reflect on the one story I've been writing for... you know what? Since I was a teenager. I'm now 35, and I remember working on this story two decades ago. I've had a sudden flood of inspiration that has given me a way past several writer's blocks at once, tied the story more tightly together by orders of magnitude, and even given me a working title. The story has started pushing outside itself, and pushing that outside itself outside itself. I now know with crystal clarity all the themes I'm working with, and I can move forward. I don't know how much you notice comments on old videos, how interested you are in stories from video games, but man do I want to run all this by you and pick your brain about it. In any case, Adam, thanks to you and Kaufman for giving me the push I needed.
It is March 2nd, 2020 and I am still waiting for part 6 because that's where it gets really intense. Adum, my love, my all, please release the final part and finish your album. You overcomplicate yourself and obsess with preoccupying yourself with new projects over and over, kind of like Caden....
In the six years this review has taken so far I’ve: Failed at school, then gotten better; given my first kiss, lost my virginity; entered high school, graduated high school, entered college; had my first girlfriend, had my first breakup; idealized multiple career paths, to then lose hope on them; turned from being a conservative, to being a leftie on the political spectrum; went to a psychologist, finished the sessions; had my first experiences with death and many other things I can’t remember right now. Just goes to show how, just like in the movie, time flies past you in the blink of an eye and that there is really no way to stop that from happening. In a fleeting moment your happiness turns into sadness and your sadness into happiness without the existence of chapters nor timestamps, just the beating of time passing by as you try to hold on to your most important memories. This is not necessarily depressing, as all thing must come to an end; it is, though, a reality check. Maybe I’ll try to take more advantage of the time I have here, or maybe I’ll just slow things down, live more in the present. Or maybe I’ll do none of that and just accept that time passes by, that things change and that the present isn’t eternal as I patiently wait for the next installment in this review. No one knows where I’ll be in six years; if my current identity will be stripped away or if it will find itself reinforced, if I will be alive or if I will just be another memory in people’s life. I guess we’ll see.
This review itself serves as a perfect companion piece to the film, the fact that this review took nearly 3 years to make and yet we’re in 2020 and can just watch the entire film in just over an hour reflects Caden’s life moving in seconds
that creeping existential dread when you watch them all back to back in 2022 and realize there is no part 6
Literally me today.

This is probably my favourite film, though I find it difficult to reccomend. It's also the kind of movie that still baffles me that a human being wrote and created this.
You summed up my thoughts so well.
Who said Charlie Kaufman was a human being?
Al Windsor it's a very simple movie. The fact that it doesn't take chronology seriously it's more confusing to view than to write.
Jay Jimenez How can one find this movie simple? If you compare this to other hollywood movies, you would get a very big difference between the complexity of the story being told, characters developing and the pure delivery in the dialogue. But of course, that’s your opinion and i respect it.
The director looks exactly like the type of guy to direct the movie
Thank you.

If it continued at this length, the videos would be around 33% longer than the movie.

That part about each person showing only a fraction of what's going on in their minds really got to me.
I literally went into high school, graduated, went to college for a year, and dropped out since we've been waiting. I've resigned to the fact that even if we see part 6 in the next few years, he'll be delivering the finale from his death bed.

When are we gonna get an audience in here?
God fucking damn it Adum, I've dropped out of college TWICE since you started this, started two awful TH-cam channels, and disappointed BOTH of my parents. So long
This is the best work you've ever done though, imo. This series is masterfully edited and analyzed
So long as in "such a long time," I mean. I'm not going anywhere
Ironically i did exactly the same in those two years
Now that we lost Scoot part 6 will either never happen or be one of his best creations ever
seems it'll be the latter

That blowout over the weekend really added a punch to that too. :(
Synecdoche, New York has breached its container. It has now escaped and is wreaking havoc on all who review it. This movie is like The RIng for movie critics - once they get in deep enough, it swallows them whole.
Das_Bass what blowout?
Adum and Merk had a huge fight that lasted a few days. They don't make vids together anymore and might not even be friends anymore as far was we know... :(

is this review the equivalent of boyhood?

Cosimia good meme

Thanks Adam! Thanks for putting a lot of time and effort into this.

I've actually never heard of it, but now I'm interested.

when this video came out i was 19...
And thank you Adam, hope you can find the time to mine everything you're looking for in this film.
take your time with these man, i love this series

Though I guess we might be in a minority considering how most TH-camrs get treated when they aren't meeting the exact demands of their audience's whims :/

It's almost been a year and I'm hurting. I need this movie and I need part 6
I wonder how many YMS viewers have died since this series started and will never see part 6
Thanks for all the time you put into this series and even if you dont finish it the amount of work and detail was tremendous.
new viewer of channel as of right now and just subscribed for part 6
I started watching this when I was 16, now I'm 18 and this makes even more sense to me. Between graduating from high school, being in college, dealing with relationships that ultimately fail and constantly scrutinizing myself, I feel like I relate to Caden so much more. Youthful ignorance is sweet and I wish I'd appreciated it more when I was younger.
Imagine watching this for the first time as the middle-aged father of a 4 year old girl. I was crying like a baby through 10% of this film.

Adam's analysis of this movie is worth waiting for. Don't rush it.
Just a little thing I've noticed:
When Caden buys (rents) the building, the woman mentions how Shakespeare was played there. I think that was a play on the famous Shakespeare quote "all the world's a stage" with the place being a literal stage displaying the world and that being a theme in the film
I desperately need part 6 Adam, time is passing fast and I know it's too selfish of me asking but take your time.
The absolute madman actually did it. Great vid man definitely worth the wait
In any case, Adam, thanks to you and Kaufman for giving me the push I needed.
you have plenty of fans waiting for part six we won't judge you when you put it out
False. I judge him daily.
It is March 2nd, 2020 and I am still waiting for part 6 because that's where it gets really intense. Adum, my love, my all, please release the final part and finish your album. You overcomplicate yourself and obsess with preoccupying yourself with new projects over and over, kind of like Caden....
In the six years this review has taken so far I’ve:
Failed at school, then gotten better; given my first kiss, lost my virginity; entered high school, graduated high school, entered college; had my first girlfriend, had my first breakup; idealized multiple career paths, to then lose hope on them; turned from being a conservative, to being a leftie on the political spectrum; went to a psychologist, finished the sessions; had my first experiences with death and many other things I can’t remember right now.
Yeah and so has everyone else watching this so what makes you think this is so severe
This review itself serves as a perfect companion piece to the film, the fact that this review took nearly 3 years to make and yet we’re in 2020 and can just watch the entire film in just over an hour reflects Caden’s life moving in seconds
Adum please do part 6, we love the analysis you do
