Did Bill Maher Become an Ally?

- Friends, the atheist political commentator and television host Bill Maher has long been a bitter critic of Christianity. In additional to regular swipes at Christians on his shows, Maher also devoted an entire documentary film, sardonically entitled “Religulous,” to lampoon what he takes to be Christianity’s moral and theological absurdities. However, Maher has recently tempered his anti-Christian rhetoric and started focusing his biting wit on criticizing progressive woke ideology and condemning positions like neo-racism, the denial of biology, and the stifling of free speech in ways that the Catholic tradition would largely agree with.
In light of this apparent shift, is it time for people of faith to reassess Bill Maher? Has one of Christianity’s most vocal opponents now become an ally or, perhaps, even a friend?

Exceptionally astute. Must listen twice. Quite a fitting response to Maher..but much more. Well done WOF.
Many people comment just based on the title and don’t even seem to have listened to the video. Bishop Barron clearly said Bill Mar has not changed on religion, but shifted his focus to speak against woke culture and thereby speaking less about religion.
No. He didnt shift. The culture did.
💯Best summary of this topic
That’s the point. Maher is still an old school liberal, and he doesn’t like the cultural shift to progressivism/wokism. Being opposed to wokism is the commonality between Maher and conservatives and that is why one could call him an ally.
He boarded the same train that is liberalism and moral relativism, but he decided to get off at a certain point because his underlying Christian suppositions informed his moral instincts that certain aspects of wokism are, in fact, wrong and go "too far". It's the same thing with Dawkins and Douglass Murray: they just can't go all the way into full moral relativism. They realize the merit of Christian morality and the faith's society building power. But the trend of moral relativism cannot be stopped if secularization continues. That can only be done with an actual revival of true faith. Society cannot be built upon a set of beliefs people don't actually believe. Even if those beliefs provide a certain function, sin is too tempting without the grace of God and a firm, genuine, sincere belief in God and all that requires of someone. And a State that pretends to endorse no particular confession only serves to drive them all out of existence. Such a State incentivises a go along to get along attitude that privatizes religion to promote commerce and civic cohesion. But when a society lacks a shared morality, and its citizens increasingly have no religion to guide them at all, civic cohesion and commerce begin to breakdown. Thus, it undermines the very foundations upon which the State is built and is ultimately self-destructive. This is what we are observing in "Real Time" as it were.

I have always found Maher's attacks on Christianity exceedingly uninformed, annoyingly stupid. But I have loved his hilarious critique of woke nonsense. Thank you for this content rich conversation. (Some may find the pace a bit fast though.)
The problem is, most atheists in the West understand even less than he does, against christianity 😅 so he can get people to follow him.
Let's not forget his brilliant critique of the unholy alliance between right wing evangelicals, paramilitary groups, and ultra racist factions. That's even better than the woke jokes! His anti religious rhetoric is not only hateful, however, but not at all funny. It's just mean.
Your original video on "Religious" is what caused me to follow you, all those years ago. Continue spreading your reason, your talent and the love of God, Bishop.
Bill Maher, after pointing out various hypocrisies of some Christians, famously quipped, "I'm a better Christian than they are, and I'm an atheist!" I think he was only half joking. Remember that he was baptized a Catholic. He can never escape that, as he was marked as Christ's own forever on that day. His Jewish roots also come through. He has always maintained a strong Judeo-Christian moral compass on social issues...in spite of himself. His comedy tends to point out the social policies and systems that perpetuate poverty, for instance. We should pray for Bill to return to the Church. If he does, we must never ask him to stop being himself. I know that many on this channel may not like Stephen Colbert, but a few years ago Stephen unashamedly (but gently) urged Bill to return to Catholicism during an interview. Bill refused, but at least someone who understands him is reaching out to him in love.
Why do some not like Colbert? He’s the most Catholic man on mainstream television today. The only late night talk show host I’ve ever heard speak openly (and frequently) of his faith in Christ.

As a Christian, I disagree with Bill's views on religion, of course. But I find myself (and have found myself for years) agreeing with his positions on just about every other topic. I admire him for his courage to call out both sides which almost no one else, especially with that size of a platform, is willing to do.
He is evilll...don't have any admiration for him if you are a Christian.
if you are a Christian you should agree with almost nothing he stands for...he's a bad man.
Unless and until he apologizes for Religulous, I have no interest in what this man has to say about Christ or about people of faith. I pray for his salvation and to me that would be a big sign of some sort of genuine conversion.
How's your forgiveness of enemies going?
I'm concerned you're putting conditions on your forgiveness of Bill Maher.
@@AussieCatholic That’s a fair question. I don’t hold any personal grudges against the Maher so I don’t see it as a forgiveness issue. I just don’t care about what he has to say about our Lord because it’s coming from an ugly place, even when he says something conciliatory. If he ever apologizes for Religulous, I’ll see that as evidence of a change of heart. I believe that I can forgive him and not care about what he has to say at the same time. I’m open to correction if you disagree.
@@AussieCatholicHow is it a forgiveness issue if it isn’t personal? He holds no grudges, nor wishes any evil on Bill Maher. Neither do I. First , thank you, loved this discussion . Bill Maher has been given the gift of intelligence, comedic timing . He says out loud what I’m often thinking. I love that he has bipartisan guest’s as I love listening to a spirited debate . His persona on real time is quite different from his real self on club random . I’ve noticed , especially on club random Bill Mahers sensitivity even in his most crass comments. I see a sadness , a fear deep down in him , maybe an insecurity? I don’t know .. everyone, if you haven’t seen club random you might be insulted and angry but he makes no apologies, that is his forum . He’s a complicated man and underneath all the vitriol , there is a man who really wants to know. He has virtue , I see it . “Where does that come from”?
It would be WILD if Bishop Barron would go on Maher’s podcast, Club Random.
That would be excellent. Also, it would be a must watch if the Bishop went on Rogan's podcast.
Absolutely
Praying for Bill.
Bill was raised as a Catholic and from a parent who is Jewish. He more closely follows being Jewish and for Israel. But is more agnostic. He sees Religion as a source of conflict in the world.
I don't think he sees religion as the source. But its this conviction that god is on your side that act as blinders and inspire escalating violence.
he never really says no God, but he hates religion and he evil and hypocrisy he sees from it.
Bishop Barron mentions that classical liberalism was reflected in the great revolutions of the 18th Century. I would say the American Revolution was representative of classical liberal ideology while other revolutions of that period like those in France and Hatti wouldn't qualify since the emphasis on the rights of the individual are missing in both of those instances. I start there because if you want to understand the left you have to understand the history. The birthday of the left as we understand it is May 5, 1789. That was when the French Revolution kicked off. Another milestone date is Feb 21, 1848, the date the Communist Manifesto was published. If you want a date to attach a lot of our current problems to that would be June 28, 1969, the date of the Stonewall riots in New York City.
Guys like Maher and Dawkins and these LGB groups who are coming out against sexualizing children are suffering from the chickens-coming-home-to-roost syndrome. They were so convinced of the rightness of their cause when they were promoting atheism and sexual deviancy that they failed to see where it would all lead in the end. The radicals on the fringes in the universities were not going to simply remain on the fringes. They were true-believers. The left has always been obsessed with the acquisition of power. Marxists have always believed in the historical inevitability of their religion, and Marxism is a religion to them, make no mistake about that. Lenin and Mao decided that the rules needed to be altered to achieve the Marxist utopia and their # 1 target was always the United States. When they discovered Marxist economics was a loser they switched to cultural issues. But the tactics are identical. Just a new boogie man and a new super-structure oppressing and deceiving the ill-educated masses. Also, notice who is leading the charge? Middle and upper-middle class kids. Marxist revolutions always emerge from those groups. They start in parlors and coffeeshops, not ghettos and barbershops.
Maher and Dawkins want their revolution back. Too late. The Jacobins took it away from you and guess what, they aren't giving it back. The father of all lies, the one you have promoted and been a front-line foot soldier for is a master at deception. Welcome to the party pal. Can we find common ground and fight alongside Maher and Dawkins. Maybe. But understand this, they still hate you and look down their nose at your silly superstitious beliefs. You may want allies like that, I don't. When they repent and get right with God I'll listen. Otherwise, I'm not going to expose myself to demons. But that's me.
So, you want to bring back the Monarchy and overturn the French Revolution to bring back the morality of a Christian King?
Boosting this in the algorithm. So true.
True (although I think I have a slight preference for Maher over Dawkins though that's not saying much. I find Dawkins' arrogance....😡 And now to hear him say he's 'culturally Christian' and that he laments the rise of Islamism, after doing everything he can to tear down that Christian culture in which he now sees value....how can he look in the mirror? I find him abhorrent, appalling!) Must.work.on.forgiveness.🙏🏼
However, to some degree, I think Bishop Barron here is 'modeling' how to handle people like Maher who have been obviously and/or vocally antagonistic (to put it mildly) towards our beliefs, but are now seeing how far, and how insane 'liberalism' has gone, and find themselves agreeing with people they formerly mocked.
i.e., Meet them at places in which you agree. Plant seeds by asking questions about why they find themselves thinking in this way. I don't think Bishop is purposefully supporting Maher. Perhaps he's merely throwing him a bone (and some forgiveness), and showing us how to deal with people like him. ❤

"The priest is not a priest for himself - he is for you. After God, a priest is everything." *- St. Jean Vianney*
We need more people like Bill Maher to raise their concern.
I think what's happening is that the entertainment industry is youth-heavy. As some of these people mature and encounter real-life experiences, they develop more nuanced views that require an acknowledgement of something beyond the Hollywood Moloch. The best example of this that I know is Russell Brand, who has become an exceedingly well-spoken, insightful, and sensitive interpreter of modern life in terms of the spirit.
Maher needs to apologize for Religulous. He does that, even goes so far as to pull it from circulation, and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Until then, it's "broken clock, twice a day."
But he was correct in Religulous. There's a reason it's one of the greatest selling documentaries of all time. He tapped into a profound truth.
How's your forgiveness of enemies going?
Have you put conditions on forgiving Bill Maher?
In mid-April, Maher said: in a statement which got a lot of publicity "Pro-life absolutists think [abortion] is murder. And it kind of is. I'm just okay with that. I am. There's 8 billion people in the world. I'm sorry, we won't miss you. And that's my position on that."
After a person says he's okay with murder, why would any bishop choose to claim that person is an ally of sorts? Adding to the reprehensibility of Maher's remark is the insulting disdain he shows to people who - by his own claim - have been murdered: "I'm sorry we won't miss you." If a celebrity said he was fine with the murder of Israelis on Oct 7, or that he's sorry, he won't miss the people killed at Pulse nightclub in Florida, would Bishop Barron think the time was right to say, "Well, on the other hand, this person says some good things too"?
And it's not as if the bishop hasn't had a lot of time to revise his remarks which he made in late May. That he hasn't done so is a disappointment.
Again, did you listen to what Bishop Barron says in this episode?
PS: I remember Maher saying that, and it left me stunned. On some level, I'm glad he said it. It might jolt some people out of their ignorance and illogical certitude.....
Maher, one of many with overtly simplistic POV, missing the paradoxical; the Mystery. The Mystery draws the curious in all honesty. Denying it is dishonest, IMO. God Bless, Bishop 🙏
Great presentation, especially on the heels of watching Bishop Barron's discussion with Dineen. I think that moral objectivity/transcendence is my favorite approach when conversing with a skeptic, since it simply isn't "moral" if it's merely the result of private opinion or cultural consensus... Maher has been saying some sane things of late, but he's still a fool...
Just listen.
I am still waiting for Bishop B invitation to Bill's program. That's going to have more viewers than the last episode of GOT.😅
Bill Mahr is a clown! Why give him this level of prominence!
This will absolutely rile the Catholic right but hear me out. IMO, themes of Bill Maher's catholic education shows through his punchlines: the Emperor has no clothes. Whether he admits it or not, Traditional Catholic Education teaches faith, morals and non-relativistic Catholic Thinking. You can see it in Colbert, Conan too.
They don't wear "Catholic" on their sleeves of couse, but they do call out the hypocritical leadership and the unjust rules of the elite through observational comedy. Isn't that what comedy does? The King's Fool calls a spade a spade. The King's court laughs at the kernel of truth. We are reminded of these truths from entertainers we love.
Does classical liberal tradition (enlightenment: ie, reason over superstition) also play a role for these guys? Of course. Does scatalogical and obscene also enter their acts? Of couse. It has to for them to survive in the industry. Do realize how insanely powerful the lbgtq lobby is. I'm still waiting for Cardinal Dolan to reconsecrate St Pat's.
Maher may let his own anger at the catholic church ALSO seep through, but aren't we all insensed on some level at the Church?
Thank God the comedians have carried on...
Very astute observation. However, I am also getting an uncomfortable feeling that Bishop Barron and other US church leaders are sliding into political commentary.
I believe a priest that politics is not a priest. He is a politician. The embrace of the extreme right by the bishop and the use of his platform to support it is a slippery slope. Many Christians in the US believe that the extremist platform, though unpalatable, is a means to an end. They seek political power before seeking the Lord. Very unbiblical.
Bishop Barron is simply commenting on how to live in society. That’s what The Church teaches priests to do.
Stephen Colbert is a devout Catholic to this day. He attends Mass with his wife and kids each Sunday. He speaks of his faith frequently on his late night show.
I’ve recently been extremely impressed with Russel Brand, who converted to non-denominational Christianity and was Baptized.
Thank you for being such a great example of how INTER MIRIFICA is to be applied!
A great book that unites faith and reason is The Tyranny of Banality: On the Renewal of Catholic Moral Theology (2023), by David Deane.
It would be fascinating to watch Bishop Barron have a conversation with James A. Lindsay, PhD (mathematics), who for the past several years has done a deep, deep dive into the writings of the founders of "Critical Theory," "Wokeism," etc. He is a primary contributor at the website New Discourses. He is the author/co-author of six books, most recently, The Queering of the American Child: How a New School Religious Cult Poisons the Minds and Bodies of Normal Kids (2024).
It's always a pleasure to listen to these discussions - God bless you both. Now can you please replace that awful table?
What is the point of this video? That we forgive and go watch the man who ridicules our faith?
I am the number one waiter on this video!
He’s an opportunist. It is good that he engages in dialogue with all lenses. At his core though…He recently said “Abortion is murder and we don’t care. We won’t miss you.”
I was also stunned when I heard him say that! However, I have wondered if he perhaps said it on purpose, to jar those in his audience who are ignorant and wilfully stupid about the whole issue.
These people can laugh and scoff and take the moral 'highground' with Christians and clergy, etc., but when Bill Maher equates abortion to murder and then states he doesn't care? Whoa, that's going to shock people, perhaps in a good way. These peoples' lies have been called out by one of their own..... Interesting 🤔...
Maher’s track record is leftist and narcissistic on a spectrum; ever the opportunist, the click bait gets him paid. That being said his value of freedom of speech keeps him dialoguing with those holding opposing views and that allows the truth to unfold. The darker the statement the brighter the truth shines as well!
No, he is far from an "ally". Listen to him mock the Bible and try to tell me otherwise.
On his latest episode of June 21, Bill Maher mocked the Ten Commandments, especially the first four commandments claiming God was on a power ego trip. Bishop Barron Claiming Bill Maher is on your side is like claiming Satan is on your side. Just silly.

A constant diatribe against wokeism doesn't make much sense to me. There have been real cases such as the awarding of Veterans Benefits and VHA home loans that have been highly unfair. As a 65-year-old white man, I understand the world is tilted in my favor. I have been involved in international trade and a white man in a business suit with a U.S. passport gets a lot of breaks someone else doesn't get.
I have been on the wrong side of affirmative action in the USA or certainly felt like it, but have also got the subtle advancement based upon being white that my non-white peers did not get. The subtle racism in our society is like compound interest, over a lifetime of having a slight advantage every day it really adds up.
Until we are ready to begin the equality of opportunity at birth, the children with the most resources are going to rise to the top. We still prefer to give our children an unfair advantage and until we stop some people are going to feel rightly oppressed.
Dear Bishop,
Sorry to bother with that, but it is very important to me. I'm worried of the fact that the word 'person' has been replaced by 'individual'. I'm a Priest from Paris, serving in the US at the moment, therefore, English is not my mother language. I think however that 'individual' and 'person' are definitely not synonyms. 'Individual' can be used for animals, no 'person'. On the other hand, 'person' is used for what is three in the Holy Trinity, but definitely not 'individual'. I'm afraid that, implicitly of course, anytime we use individual for a human being, we deny that we are at the image of God. I am very grateful about your content, I appreciate a lot your capacity to dialog with the World. What do you think about this issue? Personally, I decided to never use the word 'individual' to talk about a human being, and I'm a bit upset when I hear you using that word so often...
God bless you!

I was raised "colour-blind" and have always based one's decency on "Quality of Character". Origen wrote (via Tzamalikos) "Accordingly, the wickedness of a "reason-endowed being," and therefore of man, is not found in his "being" (ousia) but always in his "behavior", which is a quality (of character) one can acquire (or also lose)."
Picking isolated verses of Scripture to attempt to define the meaning of words like justification, sanctification and grace, etc. assumes we humans have not only received but fully understand the entire revelation and meaning of Christ's words and actions in Scripture - as well as those of his apostles and the Doctors of the church throughout the ages. In other words, we fully understand the mind of God. I don't think so.
The fact that we don't all agree would indicate in and of itself that there is still much to be learned.

As the founders of our republic understood--this form of government will work only for a moral and religious people. If the church is healthy and vibrant and Christ-centeted, prophetic, that is much more likely. When the people stray from commonly held moral values, you get the chaos and extreme autonomy we see today. Still--I prefer that danger to the danger of government run amok in directing the people it governs in how to be happy. The founders knew tyranny first-hand. Preaching without a license? Public lashing. You get the picture. It's easier for revival to happen than to turn back a government that has become tyrannical "for our own good." Actually, that's kind of where we are now, but not by people who want to enforce God's law... The solution to our current ills is for people to turn back, voluntarily, to God and His moral law...Which seems to be happening with the Eucharistic Revival...to name one.thing. Thanks be to God!

With plenty of ad hominem, quasi intellectualism and cheap crude humor delivered in his casual inflectionless nasal whine you have the cookie cutter recipe for “progressive” late night tv. He is supposed to come across as “casual suave”, but like his acting success, doesn’t quite make it. Not entertaining necessarily but effective. Requisite. Scripted. Predictable.
Basically he is another inept celeb running for the BigBucks and the fawning adulation of young (ish) malcontents.
He is part of the problem with his leftist support.
Now he may be starting to realize something abhorrent is on the rise and a startling “wait, what?” moment has come to his mind. Age and wisdom do that.
But has he had the realization that he has had a hand in ushering in dangerous movements that seek to remove art, entertainment, comedy, mirth, joy, real love and sanity from the entire culture?
@@cecemeyers6028 wow - he strikes a neve
Bill Maher needs to talk less and listen more.
Amen! 🙏 he cares more about himself and his mortality.
❤
Not hardly. Bu you know what they say about blind squirrels...
No judgement.

The culture shifted about the Nicene period 500 AD... It's just returning back to where it started from.
The spirit of Elijah returns the sons to the father. That means the Father's Faith, as seen in Israel... not Rome.
i was so underwhelmed with religulous
People, watch the video first before commenting on just the title.
That's fair, but the title is provocative in itself. Knee jerk reactions are understandable. Perhaps title differently?
Maher is just becoming a grumpy old man, and some of what he happens to say is funny and true.
Bill Mar is clever, but he does insist on his cleverness. Also maybe a little sad as he becomes less relevant and edgy as he gets older. How wonderful that we have a foundation that doesn’t need edgy or relevant - just true.
I think it shows that we are all inherently Catholic. We have different ways of accepting or denying our nature. He is definitely seeking and if he continues he will surely get to a better understanding of his catholicism (both culture and faith).
I don’t think so. He is absolutely indoctrinated by the left.
Catholic does mean universal.
@TheLoki1983 the church is Catholic.
The Holy Spirit dwells in the church since 33AD
Is he really? He dislikes the way the left is going, but that doesn’t mean he denounces the core principles. He hates religion. He is NOT an ally.
I’m in love with Christ !!! He’s at work here in this discussion…. Can’t anyone see this ?
From Coconut Grove, FL! 🙏🏻🔥St. Hugh Catholic Chuch!
Boy what in the heck is the lord up to now
Oh , He’s always up to something….
@@anneturner2759 True that 🙂
I like most of Bishop Barron’s opinions but this is one I think he’s a bit blind on. People want equality of opportunity but fail to realize that NEVER just happens. The reason Marxist power dynamics is so pervasive is because it’s an accurate description. People don’t share resources with others in mass - especially if it means they would suffer themselves-that’s why early Christianity is so counter-cultural and modern Christianity in America is nowhere near that. So given that our society is currently unequal and we don’t have equality of opportunity what’s the solution? He doesn’t like wokeness, but at least they have a solution. I don’t hear one from the right they just don’t like the left’s.
"At least they have a solution."
They CLAIM to have a solution. Do they? Where has any kind of Marxism, cultural or otherwise, ever led but towards a new would-be ruling class that tells itself it can do no wrong on the way to getting and keeping power, however many with "false consciousness" are killed or are "re-educated" and allowed to live under great oppression. Is that a solution? Is that equal opportunity?
I like Bill. Hope he comes around to God one day.
A leaf can not choose it's direction, it goes where the wind blows
Let's pray that the wind is the Holy Spirit.
But who is better looking, Bill or Bob?
Get this straight , I’m leaving the party with BBB.❤
In defense of "equality of outcome" as opposed to "equality of opportunity." Outcome can be impartially measured in a way opportunity cannot. People, generally those in power, can look at the level of opportunity and say "looks equal to me" without any way to prove or disprove it. But when we look at outcome and see that group X is consistenly accessing less opportunity it is not evidence that ought to be ignored. Opportunity without attention to outcome cannot be a rational response to injustice.
... subtle readings of your proponents but no subtle readings ("straw men") for those your deemed your opponents.
Anything to have his name out there, is Mahers purpose. Whatever the subject.
Nope
If Maher were 100% wrong all the time, we wouldn’t be talking about him. It’s true that some of his takes on various topics are wrong and he takes cheap shots, but he also gets things right on occasion. I happen to agree with him on the absurdity of the woke left too. A lot of people don’t seem to understand that being a democrat in the 60s and 70s is nothing like being one now. Comedian Rob Schneider has talked about this. You can be a leftist and be opposed to all the transgender nonsense.
Time will tell.
Meanwhile, some "repetita iuvant" about Catholic Social Teaching.
he is definitely lost - just pray for him
Reason is how we function, faith is how we live. I’m not sure Maher understands the difference.
"Reason is how we function, faith is how we live." ✨⭐👍
Or that he needs faith in his reason.
Highly unlikely
This one will be good!
Why is this a topic
I think also, that Bishop Barron is showing us how to interact with people like Maher....
...meet them where they are, at a place of agreement, and then plant seeds by asking questions and inviting them into discussion...
Bishop Barron, how can you talk to meritocracy and wokeism. God is above these childish philosophies. Dividing up the isms on what might eank higher or lower.
The good bishop is a genial ecumenical expositor, but with respect I think there is some unconscious sleight of hand in deeming the claims of faith (the Resurrection, the virgin birth, the miracles, etc...) as "supra-rational", while welcoming then into the lower audience tier the merely rational discursus.
Obviously this is a way to sublet claims that cannot survive rational inquiry into a rarefied sphere above inquiry. Being above rational inspection, these claims attain the aura of faith, attested to only by scripture, and the existential qualia of Christians throughout the centuries...
I have a great respect of Christianity, but its discourse with Reason is definitely vexed with various problems, not easily reduced.
Bring back Brandon Vogt💘
