Have I got a story for you all. I'm 50 and before all these magic things I was doing samples on the C64 and Amiga. Then to PC around 91. Got into CGI around 1992, 93. It took off for me. Been working in VFX for about 28 years. Great job and loved every minute of it. Now I'm getting older, I'm looking for a hobby (my hobby and job have been the same for a long time). I just found about all this stuff last week. I'm going to get a SP404 and get off the computer. I also played guitar a lot in my younger years and still have them laying around. I have a custom fender strat, a 92 Les Paul standard, a banjo, two acoustics (6 and 12 string Maton) and a 89 Ibanez USA custom with a Mother bucker. Also old mics and equipment form the late 80's and early 90's. I actually have the c64 still in it's box on my shelf behind me now. I had no idea you could sample like this! Crazy how things change. I can smell retirement coming on. Oh well, time makes fools of us all. Great Videos, thanks so much for doing these.
SP404 MKII is my very first sampler and I love it. Learning curve is a little steep. But once you 'get it' it's almost perfect NB: I'm waiting for 3.1 version to fix some some annoying bugs and really hope Roland will add those enhancements that you already addressed in your other videos
The MS 1 and MPC 3000 were on ny wishlist as a Junior in High School lol 😂, i had no funds for either, but did manage to get a Yamaha Su 1 (samplerl and eventually SP 202.
Also Roland needs to stop being scared and bring back the MV Series (affordable versions maybe $800 to $1400) , only thing gave the MPC a run for its money back in the day. Standalone production making a comeback 😂😂😂👊🏾
Love my sp808 bought when it first came out , sold it very regrettably several years later. Got the music bug again bought 2 sp808's ,sp606 and mc909 for about a $130 each ( I did have to repair some buttons on each but they all work great now). Then I realized all I really need to make music is a keyboard controller and computer and I have never looked back but they sit here in my studio as museum pieces(aka eye candy) p.s. also never mentioned is that the sp808 was the only sp I believe that if you knew the sampled loop's bpm you could just cut the silence in the beginning and then use the job wheel to dial the loop to a perfect loop displayed in the screen. Awesome for back then!!!
SP-606 was bundled with software called Cakewalk P606 and it was something like Maschine years before real Maschine. Software was clunky but we haved kind of integration which is now standard in modern samplers/controllers. In 2005 it was revolutionary.
@@OllieLoops Got my turntable/source running into the 202, the 202's audio out into the mkii, and the mkii's audio into my audio interface via the quarter inch headphone jack; basically using the 202 to record the samples at the standard rate and using its filters, then resampling into the mkii
I own a mpc studio black and about to get a sp404 mk2 real soon been watching a bunch of videos same i did with my mpc i appreciateand respect the history ot both machines
I owned a 202, 404 and a 606. I must say I never got on with them very well. For me it was impossible to loop anything using the arcane 'mark' system purely by ear. Was tempted by the 404 mk2 as among many improvements it had a OLED screen and hence a way to visually loop stuff. Went with the MPC One, which I love. Sold my original 404 a few months back for a little more than I paid for it back in the early 2000's.
Agree, I think it has lost all of it's simplicity with menu diving. Still rocking the 404 og for lives as it sounds great, I would use my sp303 but it's too delicate and has a lower output volume.
Sp404 Mk2 is my first SP before that i only knew about the Sp 1200 lol i got a mpc studio blqck before my sp and the sp got me neglecting my mpc 😂 thanks for this video i kinda like to look up the orgin and history of stuff im into
I have the 202 and matching drum machine, 505 (my first) and the 404sx. They are all great in their own right and all have features that the others don’t. Also I had the sp808 for a minute but never learned it and sold it pretty quickly. I still regret it. One day I want to get the 303 and the 404mkii
Roland makes great products. The workflow and mic pre should be the determining factors on whether this device is right for you. Otherwise, why not an Sp404mkii?
Verselab has its own sound presets on it (sounds really clean). You can sample with it it's a bit shitty. The best part about the mv1 is that you can plug a XLR mic into it and record vocals, good vocal fx. I've been using it for a bit over a year and I don't plan on getting rid of it. The sp404 is honestly very different from the verselab. I had to comment something after seeing the GPT response you got
Loved my sp 505. It was my first sampler and i made many songs with it. I thought i could use my computer to do what that did. I sold it and found out sadly i was wrong...
I still have my [Roland MS-1 Digital Sampler (1995)] ... Brought New & in Mint Condition. In the past I've used it with [Roland MC-303 groovebox (1996)] ←and I still have this too in mint Condition. 🤣👍🏻✊🏻🖖🏻
Any reason they skipped 404 after 303 and went straight to 505 and 606? I always assumed it's cause it was the same number as the famous error code and Y2K was still recent.
For the longest time Roland was against using the number 4 because it is the Chinese character for death. Thats why they always left a gap in numbers for 4. This was the first product they made with the number 4.
I had the original SP202 in 1996. It was always plugged to the audio output of my tv set. I used to sample tv movies on sunday afternoons.
That’s dope.
Wow
Imma 90s baby that's dope bought back memories I miss them Saturday and Sunday afternoon movies on TV

Nice history lesson on the SP. I didn’t know that so many were made. Thanks. 🙏🏽
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. There's quite of few SPs out there.
nobody's talking about how beautiful the 555 is
I made love to one at a rave in the 90's. MDMA is a hell of a drug.
The 555 is crazy cool.
Spit my first rap over sp-808 beat .. damn was such a feeling seeing that machine back then..

Blessed to be running a 202/MKII combo these days

605?? Wha

Dope. The sp404mkii is a good device. You can also look into the MPC One if you like the MPC platform. They are different workflows.

Fantastic presentation!
Thanks Tyson! I appreciate that.
@@OllieLoops You are welcome!
606 is my jamburger. Loving it!
Awesome. That’s a good one.
I have a working MS-1. It's super primitive and limited, but it actually has a cool sound to it.
Wow, that's awesome! How would you describe the sound?
@@OllieLoops I'd love to hear this too

It came with an wall adapter as well 0:32

what are your thoughts on the Roland Verselab?

I'm pretty sure one of those SP Devices had a theremin. Love the sp404mk2
Yeah, I think you’re missing right, like a motion control over certain parameters.

01:35 the Boss SP-505 looks more like a Roland D2, which was released a year earlier.

404 Mkii?
Is it better unit? @@OllieLoops
@@webleydevelopment Well, that's subjective. But I think the 404 mkii is a much better device.
EXCELENT !!!!!

What was the design team thinking with some of the early SP's. The SP808 and 505 are hideous.
They were definitely given some freedom or directive to be “innovative”.
Any reason they skipped 404 after 303 and went straight to 505 and 606? I always assumed it's cause it was the same number as the famous error code and Y2K was still recent.
They also went from 202 to 808, then 303 to 505. Maybe higher numbers were supposed to be more feature rich devices.
