Heaven Invades Asbury, Again: Echoes of the 1970 Jesus Revolution Are Already Resounding

- WILMORE, Kentucky - Starting this week, the Asbury revival is moving off campus and into the community. The hope is that the services will spread from place to place and spark a nationwide move of God. It's a strategy that Asbury followed after a similar wave in 1970 that helped kick off the Jesus revolution.
Rev. Jim McIlrath remembers the 1970 revival because he was there. "When I walked in those doors, it was almost like 53 years hadn't passed. The same Spirit washed over me," he recalled.
As an 18-year-old high school senior, McIlrath worked as a janitor at Asbury when revival broke out on that snowy morning, February 3rd, 1970.

Hearing this is bittersweet. Sweet to see that this atmosphere was happening.....bitter that so many needed to go to Asbury to experience it. The God of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is everywhere. It's a shame that people seem to be starving even with all the churches and church services and mega churches all over this country. Repentance can happen alone in a bedroom, but this pureness of community fellowship is what's lacking in many church groups. People do stand in the way. However, I disagree that the elder people need to move out of the way. The problem are "certain" elder people with rules that hinder sincere worship. Otherwise, in the full Body of Christ, we need ALL ages to contribute to building His Kingdom.
Totally agree. In addition, worship is not what goes on inside a building, but whether that worshipful attitude spills over to or continues in our homes and workplaces.

Many years ago I was at a church that often had services like this.
There would be singing and God would show up. The pastor had the good sense to stay out of the way and let God lead. Sometimes he would never even speak his prepared sermon. He would give an altar call and it would fill up.
I've heard ignorant people who have never experienced God's presence like that call it emotionalism and mock it. Let me tell you it is real. God is holy and when He shows up in power there is beauty, holiness, submission, an awareness that it is by His Grace we are there - because without Him we are dirty and lost. When He is close like that you don't want to leave and can think of nothing else. You are overwhelmed by His Love, beauty, holiness, Grace, Power, Truth....all that He is.
I have not been able to find a church like that since. Sometimes in private worship there is something similar. I am hungry as I think those at Ashbury are.

There was an "Asbury" revival in the fall of 1974 at Bethany Nazarene College now Southern Nazarene University. Herrick Auditorium sits at the corner of Asbury and 39th Expressway aka Rt. 66 and was the location of our chapel and revival services. Dr. Paul Martin's sermon was about the unknown bundle and surrendering it all to Jesus. The altars were lined and I found myself surrounded by those who sought God. Having experienced the unmistakable presence of the Holy Spirit as a child, I know that I know. How wonderful and blessed to be alive at this time!!! Maranatha!

Here in Brazil, we have been already impacted by this move of God. I was in my apartment just watching your live broadcasting when I started speaking in tongues, and God spoke to me very clearly. This revival is gonna spread like fire in the straw but will burn as an eternal fire in the hearts of millions of people around the world. God bless you, and keep on worshipping Him!

Dear Daniel, I've been studying the scriptures since my baptism in 1995. Although I hold now a Theology Degree, I know I must learn daily, because the Word of God is an endless source of wisdom. I know it's hard to recognize God's moves, many sincere Christians don't do it immediately, and I think this is your case. I think instead of judging if God's move in Asbury is a revival or not, you should try to see with opened eyes what is happening now, not only in Asbury but worldwide. Remember what Jesus said to the doctors of the law in Luke 7:31-32:: …31“To what, then, can I compare the men of this generation? What are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another: ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’ The moment to declare your love to Jesus is now. So join the movement, and be part of those who worship God in the Spirit and in truth. Remember John 4:23: "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks."

But did these young people hear the Gospel we read in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 which says we are saved by trusting in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins?
Sadly the Wesleyan statement of faith which is the beliefs of the campus church says that we must continue to repent of our sins and do good works to prove ourselves saved.
If this revival is not proclaiming the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of these young people sins than this revival is not of God.

I was born again in Southern Illinois in 1974 and on the heels of this 1970 revival I Kentucky and baptized with the Holy Ghost 6 months later. In 1976 a tremendous revival kicked off in Tulsa Oklahoma around Oral Robert’s university and several churches all over town in the charismatic movement. I hope it’s another one, we’ve really been praying for it for a few years now.

Just WOW! Your interview was such a balanced perspective on this "Outpouring". Our children graduated from Asbury and my husband is a Dean of the School of Theology at the Seminary across the street. You both have effectively laid out the 2 sides of how people have debated, criticized, defended, wondered about, and celebrated what has occured here. I spent 3 wonderful days greeting folks from out of state/country and ushering, so had the privilege of experiencing the well-managed 'chaos' and seeing first-hand how President Kevin Brown and AU staff prayerfully discerned and shepherded this encounter with the Holy Spirit and how people from all over the world are repenting, forgiving, restoring and renewing their love for Jesus and His Church, as well as taking this back to a dry-bone, hearts-gone-cold and nihilistic world. My older cousin texted me at 12:30am last night asking, "What's going at Asbury?", and your interview is perfect to share with him! Blessings, brothers!

This is wonderful. I was there when the Jesus Revolution was happening, but I was less than twelve, but I'm not sure. We had days when the older kids who were also near high school graduation were walking into the church and you could hear the jingling of beads and everything else, whatever it might be as they moved through the church building and there was a beautiful feeling in the atmosphere like none I have ever experienced since that time.
Yes ,;when I watched the video of the Revival the other night I could tell it was real and I been needing a boost

The l'il ole country-style church I attended and served in music worship leading at the piano as a 19 yo, revival broke out in a very usual way in the 1970s...ONLY GOD!!! One of the most memorable tho'ts I have...still!...is that I could NOT STAND in HIs Presence. And as I worshipped, it felt like I was being cuddled very lovingly. I tho't "I've got to try to stand again..." But I just could NOT!!!
Passer-bys driving or walking on the busy roadway saw flames on the roof of the church and would quickly come in to tell someone the roof was on fire!!! LOL...BUT GOD AND HIS HOLY SPIRIT!!!

If anybody anybody hears of a revival building in Springfield, Missouri, four around Springfield Missouri, Stratford, Marshfield anywhere close by I am 68 years old now. I was around it’s around 48 years old when I went through a mighty move of God of revival so it’s probably been 30 years I said 20 but it’s been 30 years. Let me know let me know I’m handicapped now but I don’t care I want to go I want to be in the presence of God again. I wanna see it I wanna see the move. I wanna see people in the presence of God. I want my heart to be touched once more. Well, I love my Lord. I love him so much. But I wanna be in the move of God again hopefully one more time before I die. Or before he comes back. So. so wonderful, so wonderful to be in the presence of God. I’ve been in the presence of God, but I’m saying when there is a walking talking, when the Holy Spirit comes in to revival, there is nothing like it. Nothing like it. You sit with the presence of God, I mean the shaking the trembling, the heart felt I mean you can feel his power of power where you can’t hardly stand. A cleansing from the top of the tip of your hair. You can feel it in the roots of your hair all the way to your toenails. I kid you not it’s like electricity. through you, a healing, mighty wonderful healing, and it’s only the Holy Spirit he’s remaking you and molding you into what he wants you to be if you allow him to touch you, and hold you, and to make the curves of the potters from the from the potters hand to curve you the way that he wants you to be to make that pot to be perfect the potters touch. It’s amazing let him do anything he wants you to be to do let him do it in you. You will probably even be healed of so much scars in your life. It’s amazing people. absolutely amazing. I know I sound like I’m preaching but it’s a it’s a memory I’m going back in time and I’m remembering everything and seeing the people on the floor in the glory of God, coming down and shining on everybody’s face. Their faces were just glow from just happy enjoy and love. No more pain no more sorrow when they came in. Talk about a facelift. When they left, their faces were just glowing and smiling and lifted up. Their spirits were lifted up. What a change.

God says when revival is over not the college administration and definitely not the state of Kentucky.
All the services should be open for everyone. We can not restrict people to receive from God inside there if they want to go.

I think it's beautiful. Missed out on it. I used to think it was kind of cheesy but it's really not. Love to see the youth praising, worshiping and moving. There is something about that heart and soul connection and cutting deep into yourself with that gospel.
