Wahoo McDaniels was one of the toughest men I've ever seen in the ring. He played in the NFL for 15 years. He was making $12,000 the year when he quit. He said he didn't know what money was until he started wrestling full-time. Rest in Peace Wahoo.

He played 7 years in the AFL and he retired after the Dolphins traded for knocking out several people in a fight and 2 cops that tried arresting him for it.

Honestly I don’t understand the hype about Johnny Valentine he was stiff and slow , all I ever see on these videos is him allowing other wrestlers to beat the shit out of him…. So if taking an embarrassing beating makes you a great wrestler then I guess he was 🤷‍♂️

I heard some retired wrestler say, when comparing chops, that Ric Flair’s made the skin on your chest red, but Wahoo’s made it start to bubble up like you’d actually been burned.

What a Shoot match! Replicas of the days when wrestling was truly real! Johnny Valentine was perhaps among the most toughest men in wrestling. And my gracious, Wahoo McDaniel's Chop was the destruction of anybody's face, head, and especially their chest! No wrestler could possibly survive that kind of punishment, except they just were triple tough, or was completely strung out on drugs!

When George Scott became booker in Mid Atlantic one of the first things he did was dump a lot of the tag teams and put more emphasis on the singles. He then brought in Wahoo and Valentine and from that the territory would eventually become the hottest in the NWA, especially after Wahoo convinced Scott to bring in this young kid he met in Minnesota; Ric Flair.

Considering that son Greg had already made his wrestling debut in 1970, it would've been cool to see father and son team up against another wrestling family like the Funks. I've been scouring TH-cam in search of something like that but unfortunately have come up short. So I'm guessing that they probably never actually did do a tag team match against anyone.

The ref was Angelo Martinelli. He wrestled in the mid Atlantic area way back in the 50's. While scanning the sports section in the microfilm files of the Fayetteville (NC) Observer in the public library I saw that the paper then gave fairly good coverage to pro wrestling in the area. Martinelli was a 'maineventer at that time c. 1954. After retiring Martinelli naturally became a ref for Jim Crockett Promotions.
