Wahoo and Valentine will always be top notch. We in the Carolinas knew we had wrestling gold.
Yep, I grew up then in that area. My fav was Super Destroyer, first, and Johnny V. He was early 50s then and was still a scary guy.
In terms of the pacing Dutch mentioned, I remember in Royal Rumble 92 Hammer had been in there for a while. Piper, on commentary said that you need to beat on Valentine for 10-15 minutes just to get his attention. Gorilla responded, "And his father was the same way."
Saw valentine wrestle pampero firpo at mlg maybe 45 or 50 years ago. I think the sheik didn't show.
Valentine was a well built 260 to 270 pounds and tough. I remember him ising the closed fust using the heel of the fist called the sledge hammer

My father and I have been going thru old family stuff and a picture of my Great Grandaddy popped up. He was a massive wrestling fan, must be where I get it from, and my dad told me a story about an event my Grandad went to way, way back in the day. He managed to get a seat rampside for the show, and back then "Grandpa disliked who he disliked". So when Johnny made his entrance my Grandad puffed his cigar and get the cherry real red before sticking it to Johnny's ribs. He was never allowed back to events after that.
I remember Greg used to do those same forearms.

Tony atlas talked about flair and valentine and wahoo the same way because they were stiff and would be the tar out of their opponent.
I saw JV wrestle Johnny Powers in Cleveland, OH in the early 70's and left Powers a Bloody Mary Mess.
I grew up in the Houston in the 70’s and I remember these guys.
That man was my favorite as a young fan, always remember his elbow drop
Wrestler today have the ability to book themselves in enough indy shows per week to make a living if they get on one the 5 main us broadcast shows. This is a great time for a resurgence of wrestling. A good indy promoter can build a nice territory if they can have a solid base of talent and quality booking. Look at what is happening to ovw. I'm so excited about wrestling future for the next 10 years. I just hope the quality of the matches get better.

i saw johnny valentine vs lou thesz, pat o'connor gene kiniski, dick the bruiser, fritz von erich, dory funk jr. jack brisco.. big bill miller..yes i'm old.. the stuff is shit now days... and yes i'm from st.louis mo.. sam muchnick..koel auditioium wrestling at the chase
I got a few take aways from this. First, I never knew that Johnny Valentine was that tall because Greg is barely 6' ft so for me that's a 'No Shit?' Moment. Then my second, 'No shit?' was that St. Louis didn't have their own roster. Is that true? Did that make easier - not having a regular roster to pay so you can afford to pay the big stars to come in every 2 weeks? Wasn't he known for good payoffs like Paul Boesch down in Houston? That would be Wrestling At The Chase right?
