    Could you imagine how different Allan’s career would’ve been of he’d been booked on the regular to massive venues like this one - it’s actually pretty awesome and hilarious to think about - these are the crowd sizes his work deserved

      I saw Holdsworth 6 times. 1st with Ian Carr's Nucleus in 1979. In the time it takes most players take to decide & play the next note, he'd decided & played the next scale or sequence of notes. But it wasn't just scales, it was musical. Superhuman. One of times times i saw him, 1985 i think it was, he starts on the syntax id never seen before & played most of atavacron album a little before it was released. I remember thinking how it was so original he was like a genius from another planet

    What a beautiful moment. It doesn't matter if its Kurt's and Allan's best or worst performance, its not a sport, its music. this is what Aaron Parks had to say about it:"Allan Holdsworth joined us for the second tune,and after a small delay due to some technical difficulties,he launched into a mind-expanding solo guitar intro, which led into an epic version of Gamma Band. Yes, epic. The word is overused, but in this case it seems appropriate. Kurt and Allan together was mayhem, in the best way"

    I love the awkward silence from the crowd, at the beginning of the tune,,when allan is playing alone.... These people or at least 85% of the people there,, have never heard allan or that kind of guitar playing like that before ,,, I hope they open the minds and relize what a musical genius he is... and not just want the 3 cord blues riffs all night

    its so sad that holdsworth has gone down this road with his playin, he used to be a total bliss a master of something total innovative, and open a new approch to harmony that really blew my mind. A unhuman improviser without limits, that a sill listen to and think how is that possible! , 89-93 i think he had his golden days and that period should every one have a look at that ever felt doubts about his playing! I think it will take a few hundreds of years until we have another one like Allan!

    That's the kind of thinking that relegated jazz to smaller audiences. Miles played in thousand of different venues even headlining for rock bands to find how his music was received by other kinds of public. I think that Kurt was right in accepting this invitation (sure he appreciated it) at the end jazz is music and good music in history has found the way of being universal. why you say this is an absurd venue? they're not sharing the stage with Justin Bieber or britney spears

    I think Allan is improvising over a very complicated harmony and he did not have the time to rehearse it , so take it as it is.

  • @wommusic
    @wommusic 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Kurt plays & improvises harmony on the guitar that Pat can't get close to. But it's not a question of better. Nobody can take Pat's amazing lyricism away from him, or all the beautiful songs that he wrote, everything he's done. Kurt is just different, you seem to think that Kurt is Pat Junior and that is not true at all - Kurt is aiming for a very different stylistic territory than Pat does, even if there are some similarities.

You seem to have it all figured out. ..

  • @ForcesInMotion

    i agree that thinking kurt is "a better player than" pat is not a useful mindset. but neither is thinking/stating the opposite, which is what you do in your post. i also agree w/ you that pat paved the way for many modern guitarists in many respects, and i'm sure that kurt would agree w/ you there. but saying that pat is the "originator of that whole sound and style" that kurt is putting out shows me that you don't hear the significant developments in kurt's music. keep listening man...

    The hoi polloi get to see jazz on a giant screen in a context so alien to this type of music.
    If it weren't for the mass appeal of palatable, non-confronting music, 99% of people would not be watching this, It's like a freak show for some oddity.

    Clapton selected Holdsworth about nine years too late. He's so awkward and licks-based now. Plus he's ill-suited to these type of gigs, not being the extrovert.
    I suggest you visit the early-90's, chronically under-viewed Holdsworth videos, floating around on you tube; when his 20 year old set list was new, his improv was truly astounding and he didn't play with that lifeless Donati.

    • @mistrynp
      @mistrynp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, 90s holdsworth with that Delap guitar was his best era(Hunt,wackerman, carpenter), his peak, his playing was incredible.

  • @wommusic
    @wommusic 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey Yellen, don't know how you get to talk about time-feel and say Kurt's is that of a "talented student". That's just laughable. Kurt definitely owes some influence to Pat, as does most guitarists in jazz coming after Pat, but Kurt is probably even more influenced by Coltrane, Bud Powell and even Holdsworth, and his music is much more directly rooted in Bebop than Pat's is. And there's nothing at all about Kurt that says "student".

    The thought of someone thinking of Rosenwinkel being a superior player to Metheny is such ridiculous mindbending concept I can't wrap my head around it. If there was no Metheny, there would be no Rosenwinkel. Metheny is the originator of that whole sound and style and does it better and with infinityx more elegance and authenticity than any of the zillions who have followed in his wake. Kurt is a great player but in no way in Metheny's - or Holdsworth's - league for originality or musicality.

  • @lazur1
    @lazur1 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not just Jimi & Alan. Guitar virtuosos abound these days. Plenty guys can 'cut' Clapton, but chops aren't what Eric's all about, especially after 1970. Even back in the day, I saw Rory Gallagher leave Eric in the dust at a show-closlng jam at a Blind Faith gig. I have the impression that EC isn't competitive, & lays back in duels. In the great Alan Holdsworth's case, it's different music. I doubt that he could play a convincing blues tune without embellishing it into something else entirely.

    • @UroboricNate
      @UroboricNate 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anyone who's heard a few minutes of Allans music would realize that if he actually WANTED to he could play a convincing blues tune, but why would he want to take steps backwards? it would go against Allan's nature as a musician and the whole style he developed, what would be far more unrealistic is imaging Clapton play a convincing jazz fusion tune! ha

    As noted, Metheny never went to Berklee, he was a teacher there at age 19 and was a teacher for a year before that at age 18 at the Univ. of Miami. Not that it matters. Rosenwinkel is a fine player, but in no way an innovator. Metheny has changed the instrument 4 or 5 times running, but again, let's say that doesn't matter. Metheny's masterul time feel that puts him in a category that has included just a few guitarists. Rosenwinkel has always sounded like a talented student to me in this area.
