Retirement living has so many different options these days, from active adult communities to assisted living. It’s important to consider not only the cost but also the lifestyle you want to have during retirement

One thing I’ve learned is that planning for healthcare in retirement is just as important as the financial side. Unexpected medical costs can derail even the best-laid plans.

Location is a huge factor when thinking about retirement living. Some people prefer staying close to family, while others move to states with tax benefits or a warmer climate. Have you thought about where you might want to retire?

    • @TeresaMicheals

I’ve been thinking a lot about how much retirement living costs have gone up, especially with inflation. It’s crucial to have a solid financial plan in place so you don’t outlive your savings.

Many retirees are choosing to downsize or move into smaller homes to reduce maintenance and living expenses. It can be a good way to free up equity for other retirement goals.

Some people are opting for co-housing or shared living arrangements in retirement, where they can pool resources with others and live in a supportive community. Have you heard of that approach?

For all kinds of financial reasons, Thailand is the obvious choice. AND overall, the people of Thailand actually respect and value older people in their own families. I've always thought my biggest mistake was returning to the USA when I retired. Sigh.

In Thailand kids BOW to older people open doors etc. in the UK and older person walking the streets has more chance of being mugged. Dump. In Thailand They look after their parents / grandparents. In UK people don’t ’have time’ and they’re stuck in a care home. And I worked for past 20 yrs in many care homes. Many of them were dumps. Stink. And the staff now most of which are sat around eating crisps and playing on their phones. In a few some of the residents looked like they’ve not been washed or changed for weeks. It’s incredibly sad. I know there’s many staff there that do great jobs and genuinely care. But most now don’t.

I think this subject of "Long term care" or "assisted living at own home" deserves more details. Such as docs visits, availability of support staff / nurses. And such. Might be an option if you are already ex-pat or in the process of sorting out retirement visa.
But trying to sort it out when you are already in the UK's system could be difficult aswell as maybe your own family getting in the way of your choice.
This I think needs advanced planning in order to get it set up right unless you have a family that's willing to overcome the hurdles to set it up.
I looked it up myself some years ago and cost wise it's a no brainer, if you have the acumen to set it up for others to carry out prior to you needing it.

Hi Les, I think your figures are way off with live in care. My partner does 24/7 live in care, she gets paid £800 per week from an agency, that's £4.75 per hour, even if you double that for the agency's stake, that's £9.50 per hour. Nowhere near £29 per hour !

    • @RetiredandLivingthedream
      @RetiredandLivingthedream  หลายเดือนก่อน

This was taken from a website offering care at home, If you qualify then you can claim benefits towards this cost but many will not be able to do so. Thanks for your comment, your partner may only get this amount but the agency make money also by charging the rates mentioned in this post. What is the Cost of Live in Care?
Exploring the cost of 24 hour live in care? A residential home or care home is not the only option. Live-in home care can be an affordable alternative, allowing your loved one to stay safe, healthy and independent in their own home. A full time live in career in the UK can cost between £1250 and £1500 per week.
How does live in care save money?
The cost of live-in care can be expensive but compared with the average cost of care home fees, is likely to be more economic.
Firstly, By staying at home, there will be no forced sale of the property meaning the value can increase and equity released if appropriate. Secondly, additional fees and services are limited. Thirdly, the career can sometimes have time off and family can assist, reducing weekly and annual costs.

If I had no family I would 💯 go to Asia then enter a care home when I need to. The hard part is when you have family and if they want to visit or you want them to visit it's a difficult choice to move away from them. Let's face it after you go down hill with dementia or Alzheimer's you won't remember your family and your family most likely won't want to visit you anymore. But if you didn't go to Asia before that stage you probably won't be able to do it. Living longer is great as long as you can still function mentally but when you can't it's only a burden for everyone involved. Harsh yes but Fact.
