@@barr790 I'm kind of surprised that it only reached 7 in the US (which still isn't bad, of course, being in the top 10), considering the airplay it got. I guess that's the blessing and curse of something that is both popular and somewhat niche. How many people are really going to buy it if you can just always hear it on the radio and MTV?

Welcome to the nutty world of Madness who put a huge smile on people's faces. They were a 31 hit wonder in the UK top 40 with 17 top 10 songs and are still touring. "Baggy Trousers", "House of Fun" and "It Must be Love" are all great ones to check out and their videos were a hoot too! Fun Fact: Madness was very popular in their native UK, where this was their 11th Top 10 hit. They barely got noticed in America though, where "Our House" was their only substantial hit. Much of the song's success in the US was down to its witty music video that went over well during the early days of MTV. It was also a time when British bands were trending in the States, with colorful acts like The Human League, Culture Club and Eurythmics making an impact.

Madness were one of the bands my eldest brother passed on to me best part of 30 years ago, and I still love them.
One of the most consistent bands of their generation, in the UK at least.
Starting with their first single, The Prince, they had a streak of 20 successive top 20 hits, 15 of those in the top 10.
There was the odd exception but their stuff was generally pretty upbeat in tone and lyrically.
Madness will never age I feel, at least for me. Whether it’s the relatability of Our House, the silliness of Baggy Trousers or the pure joy of Wings of a Dove, they’ll always be a band I will never tire of listening to.

Ska came to the UK in the early 60s influenced by things like Island records moving from the Jamaica to the UK. But there was also encouragement of Caribbean migration to the UK by the post WWII Government to fill gaps in the job market due to rebuiding the country and the loss of men and low birth rates during the war so there were well establishe Jamaican communities by the 60s. There was strong ska based revival in the late 70s mainly represented by artists on the Two Tone record label such as Madness, The Specials, The Beat, The Selector. Obviously technology had moved on massively so whilst they were all entrenched in ska roots there was a lot of experimentation leading to a variety of differing intrpretations! Madness had loads of hits and are still touring with dates in the UK this year. Legends.

You guys are so wrong about Madness! Britian for years had reggae, then it had punk with its reggae influences, and late 70's saw 2 tone ska revival. With the latter we had The Specials, Selecter, The Beat, and Madness. They were massively successful in Britain, with Madness having hit song after hit song. I suggest start near the beginning, and try Night Boat to Cairo official video and you will be dancing around your set!

Great Fun...another thing I came across recently and must have watched a hundred times are a couple of songs covered by a very talented bunch of kids. Kids Rock for Kids, who covered the Boston song "Peace of Mind" (Excellent), and the Muse song "Hysteria" (Pretty special), you might want to react to that last one. Great reaction as usual guys. Ska was Jamaican first, then eventually came to the UK. Madness were part of the second wave, or UK Ska revival. Madness were *_the_* 'Good Time Music' band, guaranteed to raise spirits and put smiles into a party. The record label for Madness and many of the Ska bands was was '2 Tone', who released the records for many of the UK Ska bands when other labels weren't interested. The '2 Tone' label was founded in Coventry by Jerry Dammers keyboard player of 'The Specials'. Check out 'The Beat'① eg. "Mirror in the Bathroom", "Save It for Later" ②, or their reggae arrangement of Andy Williams early 60's hit "Can't Get Used to Losing You" .
Another great band was 'The Selector' with the wonderful lead Pauline Black.
    Best Wishes. ☮
I remember the founding and flourishing of '2 Tone' because I was at college in Coventry at that time, and a friend got to know Jerry Dammers a tiny bit.
Almost all of the UK Ska revival bands from the area ('The Midlands', in the middle of England) had diverse racial mixes reflecting the population, and diverse taste in music. Some of the UK Ska revival bands incorporated that diverse music into their songs.
① "The English Beat" in the USA
② Dave Wakeling, who wrote "Save It for Later", has a great story about someone claiming to be Pete Townshend, phoning him at home one morning asking what the guitar tuning was, _"Dave Wakeling talks about Pete Townshend and Dave Gilmour"_ th-cam.com/video/cTHbUstBHp8/w-d-xo.html "Save It for Later" was performed a lot live by Pete Townshend of 'The Who', who said it was one of his favourite songs.

You're exactly right about the origins of the phrase " hanging your dirty washing out/airing dirty laundry" house wives back then were incredibly proud people so dirty linens were a sight of serious problems in a home either financial or marital no self respecting woman would be seen dead putting out dirty washing unless she had no choice or had given up trying.

The British late 70’s band "The Beat" aka "The English Beat" produced similar pop/ska hits, like "Mirror in the Bathroom", "Save It for Later", "I Confess", "Too Nice to Talk To", "Can't Get Used to Losing You", "Hands Off...She's Mine", but never crossed over to the States. Although clearly popular at the time most have unfairly forgotten them and, are rarely known by Gen-Z on upwards.

A lot of people in the U.S. who were teenagers or college-age in the 80s will know "Mirror in the Bathroom," and a song or two by the Specials ("a message to you Rudy..."?). Those are the only ones I happen to recognize.

This group was a main part of my school day soundtrack, as a skinhead at 11 in '81,and i preferred the short " flat top" hairstyle that suggs dons on the cover of the Embarrassment Album ,and i still love them now at 54 ,and i still wear the clothing pretty much. Madness were a big band in England , and basically were part of the 2 tone movement which is definitely reflected on the first Album ' One Step Beyond ' .

I was a high school dropout and had come to terms that I was gonna have crappy jobs for the rest of my life...til my late brother in-law talked me into taking some personal time off from my weaving job in the textile plant I was at to work with him doing power line work. To shorten this up some.... I never went back to the mill and made a pretty great living for the 15 years I was able to work being a lineman. 2004 came and brought me dialysis and after 3 months of trying to continue to work... There was a big ska movement at the end of the 70's into the 80's with The Specials, Madness, The Beat, The Selector, Bad Manners, and quite a few others. Madness managed to stand between ska and pop, and this song was later when they had less of the ska coming through in their sound.
One Step Beyond, Nighboat to Cairo, My Girl, Baggy Trousers (an aboslute classic), House of Fun; there you will find the ska.

Madness were definitely a ska band in the late 70s early 80s. I was I got in to them, in 1980, with all my friends. The first album had two covers of Prince Buster songs (One Step Beyond and Madness (the song)), and they wrote a tribute song called The Prince that was also on the album.
Our House was on their 5th album, The Rise and Fall, which came out in late 1982. I remember because I got it for Christmas that year. By that time their style had changed. A little less obviously ska, some better production, but still retained the humour that was integral to the band style and the music. They really solidified their unique style whilst other contemporary bands were steadfastly sticking with the ska/2-tone sound (The Selecter, The Beat, Bad Manners) or had broken up (The Specials, The Bodysnatchers).
Saw them last Christmas, for the first time (it's a long story) and they were fantastic. They're still writing great music and have an amazing back catalogue to draw from saw gigs are joyous events.
They were less well known in the US, but they are an institution in the UK, and had huge chart success over the years.
