A used 1979 xs400 that I bought in 1984 was my first “big” bike. I had been riding a Vespa and a 1972 Honda CL100. The XS was a big bike compared to those. Big, heavy, and fast. I used it when attending grad school, riding through the Kansas and Missouri heat and cold. The bike was fun, but the CV carbs seemed to leak, the bike vibrated like one of those recliners one finds in a mall concourse, and the vacuum controlled petcock allowed the gas to drip into the crank case if I wasn’t careful. I quit riding in 1988 when our first daughter was born, and didn’t return to riding until 2005. Now most days I ride a Vulcan 900 or a Suzuki TUx250, but I still have fond memories of riding the back roads on the XS with my wife. She enjoys the Vulcan’s passenger accommodations a lot more, though!
