6 YEARS!? Goodness...time sure flies! So glad I found your channel....more than 6 YEARS ago. I still enjoy your content and appreciate all of your efforts, to keep us updated! You are a joy to follow!
As someone who lives on several acres connected to the grid (in hurricane country no less), one learns the hard way to be prepared some times. An ice storm that took out power for a week revealed how useless a fireplace was, so in went a wood stove. The a hurricane that wiped out power for 3 weeks led to a portable, then a whole house generator. And lordy they both are noisy! Now I have a stocked freezer & 12V frig plus solar lights & lanterns. The wood shed stays full year round. None of this is easy & none of it was cheap. It’s the price I pay for the life I choose to live. Enjoy yours! 🤗
I really enjoy your channel. You all are the real thing. No pretending no drama. We live a similar life not in the mountains but on our family farm 6th generations. We love the simple life. Love your dogs. We have 3 Australian shepherd puppies and a Great Pyrenees. I love your relationship with them. Praying for your health as you move forward and for your future endeavors. Looking forward to new video updates. God Bless
There's nothing wrong with slowing down and enjoying the journey. It's not worth it if you don't enjoy what you do. Life is always full of surprises and some not wanted or welcome but that's the way it is. You're a very wise and interesting man and I really enjoy all of your videos. It's beautiful and peaceful there. Good luck again on whatever you do and I hope you both will continue sharing your lives and journey with us. Thanks for sharing! God Bless 💖
Jim, been following you since the days of the forum. Really have enjoyed tuning into all your adventures. Since leaving Maine 15 years ago, a lot has changed at my homestead here in the mountains of NC. Hybrid is the way my homestead is at the current time and don’t see a change anytime soon. Great content again Jim and enjoy your fall.
Boss, we are very happy that you are taking advantage of power and water at the new homestead workshop and shed. As we get up in age, it is nice to not have to struggle for you basic needs. I find it refreshing that Miss Lori gets her needs met as well. No judgement here, we are happy you will have some new conveniences. We are also a little jealous of your new view but will always keep watching so we can see it through your artistic eyes. Thanks for sharing it all with us.
Good to see your video today. I talked with my nephew today and shared your thoughts on living life. Thank you for sharing your life, you touch many lives. Blessings
I was born in 1951 everyone was living off grid doesn't matter if you had electric or not, we hand pumped and carried our water, we walked 50' down a sidewalk to the "bathroom" we cooked and heated on a wood stove, 5 to 7 cord a year, in the winter we would cut ice from the creek, go the neighbors and buy 2 pints of cream (right out of the cow) and churn us some ice cream on the weekends, if you weren't born during a winter month there was no ice cream your birthday, I was born in April, I still live off the land and thank our maker every time I take one of his beautiful animals. I watched your channel for a while, you are a honest soul, no gimmicks thank you for using some of your time to make the videos
Boss!! Oh my starz!! It is so great to hear from you again and get an about what you and Laurie have been up to!! I sure miss you two, but l'm happy to hear about all of the good things you've accomplished up there! Take care my friend!! Peace to all...💜💙💜
I discovered this channel last week when searching for the best way(s) to insulate the floor of a cabin built on piers. I found two or three videos of yours on your use of Reflectix on the skirt of the cabin and under the floors and showed it to my husband. We are designing an off-grid cabin to be built on newly-acquired land in a village not far from Washington, NH (the town where we REALLY wanted to buy in, but that didn't pan out...). We are no strangers to the "miracle of Reflectix" having built a tiny home (off-grid) on wheels, much of it insulated with the stuff I fondly call "metallic bubble-wrap". Tonight I was searching for info on dry wells and up popped your channel again. I decided I ought to subscribe and for some hours now I have been binge-watching. 😃 What a wealth of knowledge! There is so much that you have shared that will be helpful to us for our gradual build. (If we are in there a year from now I will count us fortunate!).
Hi Allie, Happy to hear you find my ramblings beneficial and thanks for taking the time to say so. Sounds like you're not far away from us so you never know when our paths will cross. Best of luck with your project :-)

Always love watching your videos. Such a big chunk of peace in this crazy world. I can't believe it's been 6 years since you two moved up to the mountain! Where does the time go and you guys have done so much! You're so right about living without power if you're used to living with it. I tell people to get accustomed to living without power gradually by stop using power stuff as much as possible. With the power grid being nuts around the US and everywhere really, one doesn't know when they could lose power. That view from the new place is going to be to die for! I so love living amongst trees all year round. Beautiful in the winter covered with snow too. I'm excited about your coming spice business!
Hopefully that view won't change too much. There's lots of logging going on behind us and it changes the landscape pretty quick. Wish I could buy it all and preserve it for eternity.
It’s good to see you, and I’m very excited for you two, and this new journey you’re on. I love your tent, it’s a nice one! Nice and comfy with the sound of raindrops coming down. Take care and God Bless!

Here the "available" service fees & taxes run about $30 - $40 then your actual "useage" fee are added. That's when I went off grid almost 9 years ago now.
That's how it is in any area I have been in. It costs just to have the account to have the meter turned on. Typically 30 or 40 bucks. I imagine you mean you've used 17 dollars worth of electricity?
Good for you. Hybrid is the way to go. I've lived without a power line and without solar--back in the day. If I were to ever do it again, I'd have a hybrid setup of some sort. Best of luck to you.

We've definitely seen alot of changes over the years by watching your videos, and we plan on hanging in here for alot more! I have a ton of respect and admiration for you two, and you truly are an inspiration!
As always I appreciate your outlook on life ! And the fact that common sense and the right outlook on certain things can open the options up so much ! I too love being in the woods when it’s raining. Always have and I don’t know why. Maybe it takes away the sense of sound while in the woods. The wind can do the same I’ve found. Thanks for the update ! Take care JC
It's beyond amazing what you have accomplished, and what you and Lori have accomplished. And more Happy Trails ahead!!! Thanks for taking us for a walk in the woods.
I do love you Boss ! You make a person feel good. We need to shine on the good people in this world. Thank you for being one. Happy for you and Lori. Amazing couple. You know the best thing you have is that well. To have water coming up out of the ground is amazing in itself. I have horrible city water. :( Love your woods. God blessings :)
Wow how time flies by..... I can't believe how long I've been watching your channel. All the other homestead channels i have watched fell by the wayside because i got bored with them or the person running them namely a certain star but not yours it's always been of great interest to myself. Keep the great videos coming and as always take care of yourselves and give the kids a pet from me.
Koodo to you JC and to Mama ....!! Life is not about the destination .... it's about the journey .... And you got yourselves a good fulfilling one .... Bravo
Bought a house with a one of a kind, fantastic view but up a thousand feet above the valley floor, and on the north side of a steep hill. After a couple of years you get used to the view but you never get used to the extra month of winter every, single, year. Also bought it in the winter under 3 feet of snow. The garbage around the place in the spring was 3 full pickup loads. Nope nope, nope, won't make those mistakes again.
Congrats on all your planning and hard work paying off. I've been following since the corduroy road days and have been struck by how many experiences we have in common, the most recent being the contentment and enjoyment of being comfy in the woods during rain and fog. Do what makes sense, don't force a timeline and keep enjoying what you're doing.
Hi old friend. I’m in the UK and was able to retire at 48yrs I decided to sell my small house furniture and all. Then found myself a nice 2 acres of abandoned land and have been here 4 years living my dream growing veg having chickens rabbits ect drilled a well. Totally of the grid not even an address or postcode/zip code it’s fantastic quite peaceful, but hard work which is satisfying. You both stay healthy and keep going.
We have been watching your videos for years...There is one video that you haven't made, yet, that I would love to see: and that is a video of your and Laurie's love story...How you met, how you fell in love and got together, etc...I would love to see pictures of you, two, when you first got together...I hope this isn't too personal, but I love to hear couples love stories...Your fan, Julie....
I talked a little bit about that in a video once but don't remember which one it was. I told everyone that I met her when I was travelling with the carnival haha. She didn't appreciate it :-D
Ya gotta do what you gotta do. Do what's best for your life and family. And if anyone else tries to say otherwise. Well they don't have any room for judgement. Keep at it Boss!
My off grid cabin is very similar to your spice barn. That said where I live grid power is 1/4 mile away. With grid power comes an address v/s simple parcel#. With an address and grid power also comes property tax increases, garbage pickup tax, square foot tax, building inspections regulation to no end. But also here AG buildings are tax exempt, I boil maple sap in my cabin/sugar shack every spring. Sugarshacks are AG exempt from taxes. Long story short as long as I use no cement or permanant footings the camp land is taxes as vacant rural rate...God bless your progress!!
@@thebossoftheswamp Yep, we have to read between the lines to avoid taxes....The taxman sure reads between the lines to tax us in every way possible!! Jennifer Grandholm, current energy secretary used to be Michigan Governor, she wanted to meter and tax our well water.....In the Great Lake State no less!!!! Blessings to Lori and yourself!!
Hi JC- I can't believe I MISSED this video! You must have been laughing last weekend, when I made mentioned that we are now set up to live off grid, but are currently living HYBRID. Thanks for this video. Having lived off grid prior, we have settled into a conpromise. Yes I would buy a propane refrigerator, freezer, etc, if we can no longer afford electricity.....because I love living in a camping lifestyle, but with comforts. I am pleased to hear you are getting back into your spice business. I will definitely buy from you and Lori. You sent me a sampler box of your spices, rubs and dip way back in 2004? They were wonderful! Of course in your most recent video you are making noises that you may " about face" and this is ok if that is where your dreams eventually lie. But a part of me hopes you will hang on to this new property as a Base Camp. ~ Diane
In your view what does it mean to be off grid? I live on an island in the Southern Bahamas where there is 3 homes all on solar power. I uses a water Collection system to support the 3 homes plus a swimming pool and a garden and the chickens. My home is high on a hill all electric + AC where I have Dish satellite TV and Internet from Starlink. Cell service from the next island over. Do you consider this off the grid? I am over 25 miles line of site to any electrical power. If I need groceries I don’t have stocked up I have to take a boat to the next island up above me nearly an hour ride one way. I have been amazed at what I have been able to grow in my garden down here in this hot humid climate. People always ask me about crime? There are no doors that lock here. The biggest crime are the little spider monkeys getting into the bird feeders and the rooster starts crowing at about 4:30. So I get up and read my Bible.
Yes I’m very happy that your getting on grid somewhat. Easier on you and Mrs Lori can have the things a woman needs to have to finally get to use in her life. Your attitude is solid if it’s not right put it on the shelve and do something else. That’s a happy life. If your always scrambling to make things happen so you can eat, sleep and stay warm your not really living your surviving. Sounds like your going to start living and that is a great way to be. I sure hope your going to have some deer hunting videos and getting all your equipment ready for the season.. I miss that about your shows. Maybe get your daughter back out for a Dad & Daughter hunt? Lol Stay save out there in the woods tell Lori I said Hi.
It eassy totalk and hard to do, yet you're doing it. I hope that's going to work for is too. Pretty much everything you've done is doable for us too, we're going for it in few months... our grand grand parents lived off grid (because of the times) and my mother's grand grand parents lived well into their 90s and refused to get power. They had long and healthy lives, didn't even wear glasses because they used the gas lamps. I wish that we're doing so too. Stay strong, healthy and happy! ... and live long and prosper (I might ad 😇)! Thanks for your wisdom and for sharing this with us!
I love ure ideas and place boss it beautifully planned and very organized and pretty going on grid that close to electric great idea and cheap wish I'd done something like that yrs ago always thinking of u and lorrie frankie and tillie boss take care and be safe u all
I was having a flat day, and thinking to myself, gee, I wish I had a new video to watch from the boss to brighten up the day. My phone beeped, low and behold, a new video from the boss😁. Have a great day boss👍
I'm agreeing with you as I lay on the couch with the TV on the radio on the air con blowing on me. Watching you on my phone. With ice in my screwdriver. That all sounds very romantic. But it's obviously not for everyone. Ok keep up the good work, stay well my friend.
We had an ice storm that took out our power and it took a month to get it back on. We always keep generators and non-ethenol gas on hand. Plus, if we have an extended outage we have a solar powered deep well pump we can utilize.
I have been watching your channel since the beginning and admire your tenacity. I was wondering when you would go hybrid. I wish you, Lori and the pups a happy future!
Thanks Boss, I just this video. Me and the wife are making progress on our property and cabin, winter is closing in but we should have a dry shell up in a couple of weeks We need to pull the woodstove from storage and then get that installed my wood supply is adequate, but every day cutting more deadfall
@@thebossoftheswamp the good thing there is a lot of dead fall trees for firewood for our 1st winter here. A cord here is selling for $360 . And it’s not seasoned. Keep up the great videos Boss but still try to have time for your selfs.
I started watching when you and Franky would make your way into the woods to that little cabin in NY with just felt on the exterior you know a month at the cabin Franky get me a beer the corduroy road , great memories I'll bet , any ways your doing it right and on the sunny side of the mountain along with a view that could be a painting , very nice thanks for sharing .
I’ve been following you guys for quite a while now! Bought some property and it had a cabin on it. I added an addition on it and used a lot of your advice boss man! BOOBLE FOIL under the sub floor works great installed an RV toilet and put in a 300 gallon septic, works great!!! All the best from ohio
Glad you’re taking time to enjoy life while still working for your next dream. You looked like a little kid so full of joy out in the woods in the rain. I use to love to walk in the rain, but here in the south we don’t have too much just rain anymore. Seems as if every time we have rain these days it’s accompanied by lots of lightning and strong winds. Not thrilled to walk around in that.
Looking good..congratulations! We put 3000 hours on our generator in the year and a half it took to build and power our 800 sq ft year round cabin in Maine. We have a well and septic system, and a well chosen refrigerator. We have a small solar set up as well.
❤ BOB ⚠️. Dont get bored. As I mentioned before. We had so much fun off grid, cooking chicken over an open fire on the tri-pod. Little beer, little music, lot’s of memories until,,, the ‘CABIN’ ⚠️ MICROWAVE OVEN, STOVE, telephone, fridge, TV. Just like down state in Michigan. We stoped using the property out of boredom. May as well be comfortable at home. Why have two similar homes? It was ruined with the electrical appliances and all the modern conveniences. Soon it wasn’t a cabin anymore and the kids stopped coming up. When they did come up at first, they stayed in their rooms. No More CAMP FIRES. : (

Thank you Karin. I very much appreciate your kind words. Many blessings to you.
Look forward to all the “Improvements”….but still the life in the woods…..love it ! 👍👏😎 Rick
Can't wait to see what's next
Wow how time flies by..... I can't believe how long I've been watching your channel. All the other homestead channels i have watched fell by the wayside because i got bored with them or the person running them namely a certain star but not yours it's always been of great interest to myself. Keep the great videos coming and as always take care of yourselves and give the kids a pet from me.
Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to post them.
@@thebossoftheswamp your very welcome.
Thanks for letting us glimpse your inspirational life. No regrets! Long may you prosper.
Thank you Ken and the same to you :-)
Koodo to you JC and to Mama ....!! Life is not about the destination .... it's about the journey .... And you got yourselves a good fulfilling one .... Bravo
Thank you kindly :-)
I Have not watched your channel in a long time.I am glad you are doing what you love to do. Live Free or Die.
Thank you ,My place in the woods comes from ur ideals, watching you gives me so much joy ,Be Blessed
Thank you for saying so James. Many blessings.
I just love how you folks are getting your systems set up so you can age in place and live a fulfilling life!
Thanks you Dale and all the best ;-)
Thanks, your happiness is contagious.
Better than ever !👍🏻We want to live near you.🕊…
Hi old friend.
I love the hard work and all the challenges of living off grid but I'll grab onto the powerline when it runs right by like it does on that parcel.
Login. Oh The Boss put out a video! YES! Click like. Watch video and smile.
Ya gotta do what you gotta do. Do what's best for your life and family. And if anyone else tries to say otherwise. Well they don't have any room for judgement. Keep at it Boss!
You got it down. Keep up the good life. I'm smiling and I know you are! 😎
I've looped this project into my business so everything I've done so far is a write off. It's obvious we think alike :-)
I think you are magical Boss., with a heart of 💛…
Thank you kindly ;-))

Sounds like a good life to me :-)
"Off Grid" has turned into such a farss that I don't even know what that means anymore... :-D
Wow Boss we can't believe that Lori and you have been living in the cabin for 6 years. Time sure flies by. Great video. ❤
Time has flown by for sure ;-o
Lol
Stay save out there in the woods tell Lori I said Hi.
Good to see your boss hang in there
Thanks Mike :-)
Thanks for the update on the projects
Tell Frankie I said hello
No 9 to 5...no regrets...just getting ready to.go.boat camping/fishing.for a few days...I am truly.blessed and so.are you😊👍
I'll be working on my bush camp all day today, getting it ready for a bow hunt/campout. Happy Trails ;-)
@@thebossoftheswamp 😊👍
It eassy totalk and hard to do, yet you're doing it.
I hope that's going to work for is too. Pretty much everything you've done is doable for us too, we're going for it in few months... our grand grand parents lived off grid (because of the times) and my mother's grand grand parents lived well into their 90s and refused to get power. They had long and healthy lives, didn't even wear glasses because they used the gas lamps.
I wish that we're doing so too.
Stay strong, healthy and happy! ... and live long and prosper (I might ad 😇)!
Thanks for your wisdom and for sharing this with us!
I love ure ideas and place boss it beautifully planned and very organized and pretty going on grid that close to electric great idea and cheap wish I'd done something like that yrs ago always thinking of u and lorrie frankie and tillie boss take care and be safe u all
Thank you Shaun and all the best.
I was having a flat day, and thinking to myself, gee, I wish I had a new video to watch from the boss to brighten up the day. My phone beeped, low and behold, a new video from the boss😁. Have a great day boss👍
Glad I could help!
6 years my how time fly loved every minute GOD bless
keep up the good work Boss. Love the videos. Best of luck on the new project.
Thank you kindly :-)
I'm agreeing with you as I lay on the couch with the TV on the radio on the air con blowing on me. Watching you on my phone. With ice in my screwdriver. That all sounds very romantic. But it's obviously not for everyone. Ok keep up the good work, stay well my friend.
I still enjoy the videos but when I started watching this channel was about trapping and fur processing.
Yes it was but I also have a life to live and other things to do. There's no fur market right now anyway.
Looking forward to the next chapter , happy for both of you .
We had an ice storm that took out our power and it took a month to get it back on. We always keep generators and non-ethenol gas on hand. Plus, if we have an extended outage we have a solar powered deep well pump we can utilize.
By crackie your doing it!
And I'm double proud and happy for you!
None of us has "to settle?"
Keep dreaming!
Keep visioninzeing!
Keep soaring🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
Here's to hoping the Well people showed up after all and you are all set with a proper Well by this time. 🤞
They started yesterday and Im not liking the outcome so far :-x
I have been watching your channel since the beginning and admire your tenacity. I was wondering when you would go hybrid. I wish you, Lori and the pups a happy future!
If power is available, I'll certainly take advantage of it. Always have :-))
Great to have you in the Granite State!
Thanks Boss, I just this video.
Me and the wife are making progress on our property and cabin, winter is closing in but we should have a dry shell up in a couple of weeks
We need to pull the woodstove from storage and then get that installed my wood supply is adequate, but every day cutting more deadfall
I want to put up one more cord for the camp but then I'll need a bunch for the garage. I'm glad I enjoy cutting wood ;-)
That's awesome Rusty. I've never seen BOOBle Foil but will keep an eye out for some 8-))
Glad you’re taking time to enjoy life while still working for your next dream.
We certainly had our share if wind and lightning the other day :-o
Truth about you guys. Great show and advise. You bother made man . enjoy it when you can.
Your home spot on the other mountain is gorgeous..God bless.. Be safe 🇺🇸🌹❤️
Thank you and God Bless
I lived off grid in South Africa. I had what we call a paraffin fridge wooden stove and had bring in water. AND that was very hard life.
A paraffin fridge is essentially a propane fridge?
Looking good..congratulations!
We put 3000 hours on our generator in the year and a half it took to build and power our 800 sq ft year round cabin in Maine. We have a well and septic system, and a well chosen refrigerator.
We have a small solar set up as well.
Good luck to you my freind. I am pleased that I followed the journey with you and Lauri and the kids.
Thank you my friend. The well got finished today and power to the garage next week. Things are happening :-)
Thanks again Boss for another great conversation full of knowledge😇🗽👍.
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
🙂 Hi Boss, keep having fun and take care both of you 👍
Sounds good Boss, taking life a day at a time and enjoying some life in between.
Always :-)
I love your videos your always doing great work. It's nice to see the progress your both a great Team 👍.
Everything look awesome Boss. I am so excited for you guys! What a journey!
Thanks so much!!
Found your channel way back when I was first getting into trapping and I found your videos on trapping beaver. Been subscribed pretty much ever since then. Thanks for taking us along on your projects and teaching us the how, but more importantly the why, of how you do them.
Thanks Eric and all the best.
