What the Hell Happened to Massachusetts? Episode 1 - Brockton, MA

  • Brockton is notorious among Massachusetts residents as being a terrible place full of crime. Here it is.
For this edition of dashboard tours, I wanted to check out the absolute worst place in the state of Massachusetts that I could find. It wasn’t hard to figure it out - every ranking website claims the worst place in the state is Brockton, a smallish city about 20 miles south of Boston. So that’s where I would head. It was a really pretty day in early spring, putting a shine on a community that usually doesn’t...well shine. It was Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at 11 am.
On the drive, we’ll be taking Main Street for a while and then ducking into a few neighborhoods. This is the exact route we’ll be taking.
If you ask people from Brockton what it’s like to live there, they will tell you about all the crime and shootings and drug use, poverty, gangs, prostitution and depravation. This is certainly not a good place to live, as you’ll see. If you’re curious, though, a home here would set you back about $360k on average. That’s a very telling sign of how crazy the real estate market has become. Can you imagine? $360k to live in a place like this?
By the way, when I go into hoods like this, I put this magnet on my car so that I look like I’m supposed to be there. People usually just wave me through this way.
Here’s the rest of the worst place in the state of Massachusetts.

@@markrichards6863 I couldn't disagree more. Yeah, those are bad areas for sure. Have you been to Lawrence lately? Go to Lynn and see how nice it has become.
I grew up on the north shore and you can see what urban sprawl and open national borders does to communities longterm. Lynn has become Chelsea, Peabody has become Lynn. Beverly is becoming Peabody, and on and on. It trickles into places like Gloucester, and even some of the smaller coastal communities. I see it daily. Slowly but surely each community becomes overwhelmed with too many people. There is a one common denominator in the decline of all these places. Working class, American families suffer the consequences. Our communities decline, our wages undercut, our neighbors we no longer know. We don't even speak the same language. Respect for your city, neighbors, etc. declines. Fentanyl keeps pouring in unimpeded. Families continue to be devastated by all of this decline. Resources are spread thin and corporate America gets more consumers.
Then the N.I.M.B.Y's come out. They vote for the people putting these policies in place. They vote for the people whom are beholden to corporate America. They vote for the people the press told them to vote for, BUT as soon as it hits their neighborhood they suddenly forget the culture approved moral compass they were told is virtuous. They toss it aside and start resisting public housing projects, 40B plans, etc.
I apologize for the rant. It is just fascinating to watch the cognitive dissonance of limousine liberals play out. Fascinating yet infuriating, as they don't realize that their current complaints are a direct result of policies they support, shouting to the heavens with virtue for all to hear.
They have "We are all in this together" signs on their lawns. "COEXIST" bumper stickers next to the "RESIST" stickers on their cars. BLM signs in their windows. AND next to their various, and oh so virtuous lawn signs, is a "Keep -name town here- small". "VOTE NO on -name proposal which changes their community-, and suddenly these people become less "virtuous" without realizing they never were in the first place. They were just parroting the line they've been fed while corporate America changes the face of their communities in the name of consumerism, and of course greed! I could ramble on but I'll refrain.
I'm just a working class family man (crushed by mass migration flooding my job market) in a beautiful community surrounded by out of touch buffoons with a lot of expendable income and absolutely zero self-awarenes.
      *rant over*

I grew up in Brockton and in the 90s the town was pretty safe until they started opening up section 8 everywhere. As soon as they opened a condo complex down the street from my house things went to shit. The house got broken into, somebody stole one of our cars, and I got mugged infront of my friends house all within the span of 2 years. We moved to the south side and somebody tried to break into our house twice and there was even a shooting infront of our house. This was also deep in the suburbs, the "nice" parts of town too.
My dad was a firefighter for 25 years and he told me parts of town were basically just infested with drugs because they'd respond to multiple overdoses a day. My entire family, relatives, and friends GTFO of Brockton when we could. Also, Brockton has more pedestrian crossing accidents then any other city in the state because people drive around like maniacs.
The main reason a lot of people live in Brockton is because it's the cheapest town south of Boston that has a rail line connection.

    What happened to Brockton?
There was a time about 100 years ago when Brockton was voted the best place to live in the United States. Brockton was the shoe manufacturing capital of the world. There were countless factory mills scattered all over the city. Good paying jobs working in these factories were plentiful. It was one of the first cities to have electricity, and Thomas Edison was there to witness it. Brockton was the first city in the county to have stone railroad bridges built so vehicles could drive UNDER them (that was a big deal back then). The world's best bridge builders came to Brockton, Massachusetts to build these bridges. They're still there, and probably will be forever.
    What happened?
If you ask the oldest living people in Brockton, they'll tell you it was Democrat Governor Michael Dukakis. He was in office from 1975-1979.
Around the time he was in office, Boston was in the process cleaning up the red light district (a.k.a. “the combat zone). They were leveling run down old apartment buildings and making this seedy area as small and presentable as possible. Legions of hookers, pimps, criminals, and drug addicts had nowhere to go.
Dukakis decided he would send them all to 3 cities. Brockton, Haverill, and Lawrence. These other two once great cities suffered the same ruinous fate. Suddenly, there were low-income and subsidized housing complexes being built all over Brockton to house the element that came crawling out of the Boston red light district. And of course, this element multiplied and spread their "lifestyle" through the once strong and proud city. Everyone who was able to move did. Businesses left.
And THAT is what happened to Brockton.
    Liberalism.
    Brockton was destroyed by liberalism.
Just like New York City. Just like Portland. Just like Minneapolis. Just like San Francisco.
These things are inescapably political. Like it or not, that's the truth.

If the only location this person shows is Main street and the center where businesses and offices are located, he cannot claim for Brockton to be the worst place to live in Massachusetts. It's true there are crimes and homelessness and drugs you will find the in populated cities in Massachusetts such as Springfield, Chelsea, Lawrence, Holyoke. Worcester, and others. Why didn't you ride your car around the west side of Brockton. West of Brockton is part of Brockton where there are mansions, golf courses, malls, restaurants, hospitals, schools, and more. Brockton is NOT what you presented 100%. I thought the same before moving from a good neighborhood in Boston to Brockton. It's true the average homes cost $350,000 and we have homes costing millions. Don't get fooled. The video only shows the Main Street a business district and of course you will find crimes and homelessness and drugs. I suggest for anyone thinking about Brockton as an option and you have family try to look to live here you have the outskirts of the city such as on West or away from the city center. I recently move from Boston to Brockton and I live on West closer to all the restaurants, retails shops, hospital, museums, park with trails to walk. Brockton is a city rich of history known as the City of Champs becsuse is the birth place of Rocky Marciano and Marvelous Marvin Hagler, John Sullivan, and John Ruiz. Brockton was known as the Shoes City due to outnumbered of shoes factories in existence from 1900 until all the companies left to another countries due to outsourcing. The shoes factories left a beautiful history and the upscale mansions and big houses you will find on the West Brockton. As any big cities you will find good and bad neighborhoods. It's people's choices. Brockton again is not the worst cities in Massachusetts. The same is said about Chelsea, Springfield, Worcester, Holyoke, Lawrence and others. I agreed that citizens should get involved to make the city better. Politicians should be make accountable to provide what they promised.

As a Brockton Massachusetts resident, we look at places like Chelsea and Methadone Mile as the worst place. Brockton is all full of kids at this point. We have the Best High School within miles and miles of here. You talk like you need to get waved into Brockton? It's full of nice old people too, all over the place, one of the most populated cities. I really feel as though you did one outdated wiki search about Brockton and that was it. You should've at least contacted some residents or something to speak with about how it actually is to live here. Going on 19 years and was raised here as a child and I played with my buddies outside in the yard and street and had a great time. Nobody ever bothered us once, in fact, people always look out for the kids around here. You have murderers, drugs, and sex every where you go, it just varies on which towns have more money to Hide it better. Brockton is in the middle of Restoration. Every list I just checked says Fitchburg, North Adams, and Springfield as the worst, not Brockton.

I own a house in the Campello area. It is quiet for the most part until they play their loud music in the summer. In my neighborhood it is mostly single houses that people take care of and keep their lawns nice. I pay $4300.00 in property taxes. Yes..you read it correctly. I have lived here for 25 yrs plus. It use to be a lot nicer than it is today. The problem is we became a sanctuary city. A lot of Haitians and Cape Verde. Some are very nice people. It is not as bad as people think. City of Champions though. Boston might be the city of professional sports Champions but Brockton is the original city of Champs. It's a shame how far that once great city has fallen.
Here in Massachusetts I see a common theme of cities that were once hard-nosed but respectable and full of working class families turn to absolute shite. People used to take pride in their city, and for all the right reasons. Today is a different story. It's almost as if you invite the 3rd world into your city, your city becomes the 3rd world.
See: Lynn Ma., Lawrence Ma., Lowell Ma., Fall River Ma., New Bedford Ma., Springfield Ma., Hopkinton Ma., Chelsea Ma., Worcester Ma., and of course Brockton Ma.
The decline of these cities is multi-varied and there are many economic changes and reasons they've fallen apart, BUT there is one common denominator in all of them. It also involves ENORMOUS cultural change, which drives everything in the end.
We just aren't allowed to acknowledge it.
