That is not true. There are large generations of people who knew or know about the Philippines because they were living in the war times, or simply because your country was ranked number two in Asia Pacific for economy and progress for a period. Also, many Latin Americans (Philippines fellow ex-spanish colonies) of certain generations (today, 50+yrs old) know somewhat about the Philippines because Philippines was more involved and closer to their fellow ex-colonies during their youth or main adulthood.
Not really, Philippines is already popular in 60s due to Ferdinand marcos speech at White House in USA. And international medias loved Imelda due to "LIFE OF THE PARTY" status and throwing lavish parties either local and international with the elites and royals around the world.
The pace is still fine. But remember, the show was still a two hour show. They did a lot in two hours, had many segments and had less commercials back then than today. And in the past years, the show is three hours long, so they have more time. It is clear that the stage and tv director are giving Bob Barker how much time is remaining. That's how it works.

Seen this many times in 1973. We didnt have the live tv broadcast then. The tv station was playing this whole show several times a week and I always made sure I was on front of the tv during the start of the replay. It's still magical to me esp the setting: the historical Herrod Atticus Theater in Athens at the foot of the Acropolis.

We only have the daily newspaper or radio to learn the results of the pageant. When it was front page that She won Miss Photogenic many of my friends were very happy & elated and hoped that she may win the title. And the rest is history, so to speak.

I read somewhere that she just saw a long country name across Miss Universe in the card. She was holding hands with Ms USA so that would have been pretty obvious. Hahaha Margarita Moran was the winner the moment she set foot in Athens. She dazzled the locals, the international press (she was also Ms Photogenic) and ultimately the judges with her Spanish mestiza beauty, poise and urbanity. She and MU 1969 Gloria Diaz were from the upper crust of Philippine society so the sophistication was no surprise. During her reign, she was neighbors at the St Regis hotel and was friendly with the famed Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali. Suffice to say, she spoke fluent Spanish. One of her biggest regrets is turning down his offer to paint her into one of his masterpieces. From what I can remember, they differed in their vision of how the portrait should look like.

and if not many people in 1973 knew anything about the philippines, it only meant not many people were that educated back in 1973....same as today, ask any random person outside the philippines where the country is or what they can say about the philippines, not many would be able to say anything intelligent...

We only have the daily newspaper or radio to learn the results of the pageant. When it was front page that She won Miss Photogenic many of my friends were very happy & elated and hoped that she may win the title. And the rest is history, so to speak.
Back when it was still a big deal and Americans and Europeans still cared about Miss Universe! LOL. Now it's just Latinos and some Asians who care...

I read somewhere that she just saw a long country name across Miss Universe in the card. She was holding hands with Ms USA so that would have been pretty obvious. Hahaha
Margarita Moran was the winner the moment she set foot in Athens. She dazzled the locals, the international press (she was also Ms Photogenic) and ultimately the judges with her Spanish mestiza beauty, poise and urbanity. She and MU 1969 Gloria Diaz were from the upper crust of Philippine society so the sophistication was no surprise.
During her reign, she was neighbors at the St Regis hotel and was friendly with the famed Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali. Suffice to say, she spoke fluent Spanish. One of her biggest regrets is turning down his offer to paint her into one of his masterpieces. From what I can remember, they differed in their vision of how the portrait should look like.
The cutest part was when Miss Philippines peeked into the card and knew it was HER.
